Amateur Effort.......2006-07-29
There are several very good crochet stitch guides on the market. This is not one of them. I should have realized when I read the introduction and saw some blatant errors. It states that "These days machines crochet items as small as doilies and as large as sweaters and afghans." Wong. If you look up "crochet machine" on Google you will find a huge industrial machine that makes drapery trim. It does not, nor does any other machine, crochet doilies, sweaters or afghans.
Then it talks about the diagrams which it says are based on International Crochet
symbols "...the old European code used widely today" that were found in France.
Actually, the symbols we use today are of Japanese origin, and the earliest recorded
sighting of them is about 1915.
Finally, it says that crochet was called Nun's Work in the Middle Ages. But nothing
about crochet has ever been discovered as early as the Middle Ages.
Doesn't give much reason to trust the rest of the book.
Each stitch is presented with hand-drawn symbols (pretty well done), a fuzzy black and white photo of the stitch, usually worked pretty poorly, and written instructions.
Nothing new here. No color in the book except on the covers.
And as one previously revidwer pointed out, the covers feature a rectangular motif for a teddy bear block that may enduce someone to buy it. Too bad! The pattern for it is not in the book!

It's a stitch guide.......2006-03-08
Not a primer, not even really a project book. I love this book, I've checked it out repeatedly from the library, and it's the book I refer to when I'm designing things. I can't thank the person enough who was kind enough to put it on my bookshelf. My best friend wants a new scarf, I get this book, I'm working on an afgan for my husband, I reach for this book. I want to make a sampler shawl, this book again. I don't particularly want finished patterns, I like making things the way I want them, this book gives me the tools and stitches to do it with. Plus I prefer international crochet symbols, so that makes it even better for me.

I was looking for books with patterns on Amazon. This book popped up. I liked the cover and the title. I did read some reviews and noticed that a few people were not happy with it. I took the chance though. Kicking myself now. The basic stich section is acceptable. The book does show detail on stitches, but so many of them are fuzzy. The pictures are black and white and they didn't turn out well at all. I am not happy with it. I guess it can sit on the shelf and look pretty with the cover that caught my attention in the first place.
Suitable for Beginner or Seasoned Crocheter.......2005-09-10
Found this Enclopedia excellent. Very importantly it gives the difference to International Crochet all over the world. I found this excellent. Gave it to my daughter as she is just starting to crochet. Used it myself even though I am a seasoned crocheter. Excellent.

I was looking for a small book "that had it all" persay, and I came across this little books sitting in a used bookstore. I think this is a great book for someone looking to start crocheting, without too much heavy, overbearing history to bog down what your looking to do...Crochet.
It has beautiful old patterns, that I haven't seen in new books, the whole feel gives you the idea and feel that Grandma has sat down and taught you to crochet. It's a smaller book (my copy is 8 inches by 5 inches) so it's great to throw in a bag with some small balls of yard to take with you anywhere.
Lots of folks have said different things about this book, good bad and indifferent, but I found it easy to follow, great to learn from, and for used copies being only 2.95 cents you can't really go wrong.

Boring, uninspired Crocheting.......2001-09-13
I agree to a point with Lee On The Road about the Nancy Bush book providing a better traveling Crocheting experience, however it provides little information on how to carry the required equipment whilst travelling - and I believe that is something Lee ought to keep in mind.
This book, however, is the dullest book I have seen regarding the subject - and as such I have to disagree with the other comments featured here. The choice range is limited, and dare I say, stuck firmly in the sixties.
Instead, I firmly recommend the Big Book of Favorite Crochet Patterns with the cheerful introduction by Mary Waldrep.
Interesting crochet action.......2001-09-05
As Happy mentioned,it's good to see the different styles of stiches laid out in detail. However, I will shortly be spending a lot of time away from home, and find the recent travel crochet book by Nancy Bush a lot more pertinant to my own particular requirements.

Each section shows the different kinds of stitches (sc, hdc, dc, cluster, popcorn, puff, relief, motifs, edgings, etc.), its variations, and two or more patterns using previously discussed type of stitches.
Good points: Each stitch is identified by the required multiples of chain, so that you'd know how many to use when designing your own pattern. Particularly good are the stitches shown in the puff, popcorn, relief, edgings, and some of the shell and v-stitch sections. Complete instructions and full illustration using International symbols are also provided per stitch. The patterns featured at the end of each section show good usage of stitches discussed. Font used is of a good, eye-friendly type and size. The book size in itself also makes for a handy reference tool.
Not-so-good points: First, there are quite a number of almost-similar stitches with almost no or very little distinction. Second, the photos are not consistently presented too; some are blurred and hazy. Too, the photos could've been shot at a better angle for better appreciation of the stitches. In fact it took me some effort to realize how pretty some of the stitches really are.
Finally (this can be good or bad depending on your needs) most of the stitches are of the lacy type.
A wonderful book for all levels........1998-11-11
The Encyclopedia of Crochet has been very helpful and most interesting. I've crocheted for many years, and I'm always intrigued by the new designs and stitches that someone has originated. I've really enjoyed trying the Afghan patterns. These are my favorites. The designs are beautiful, with easy-to-understand instructions.

Dr. Biswell takes a highly technical subject and writes in a style that is both entertaining and easy to understand. It is a subject many people have little true understanding of. Yet our land management policies that have lead to years of fire suppression impact so many of us.
As far back as the 40's, Dr. Biswell was in the field proving that controlled burning is both healthy and necessary for the fire-dependent ecosystems of the West. We are now seeing how decades of fire surpression has caused huge fires in Montana and elsewhere in the West during the 2000 fire season.
Anyone living in or near an urban/wildland boarder should read this book. It will awaken you to the realities of the danger many of us live with. This book should educate and encourage you to speak to your local land managers about taking proactive measures to protect your homes, lives and communities.
As someone who has taken a professional interest in this subject for some time, I would say this is the best book out there.

Just the recipe for the "world's best caramel corn" is worth the price of this book. My kids and I also loved "How to See Better in the Dark" (Secret #19); "How to Throw a Spiral Pass" (Secret #11); and "How to Listen to Your Cat Talk (Secret #4). I'm really surprised that any mother says she knows all this stuff. Maybe she had ten kids or something. I've only got three. What a fun, sweet, cool book. We've had so much fun with this. I just love it!

Very little in here that we don't all know. The price is right but don't expect anything that will surprise you or the kids. I gave it two stars only because it wasn't very expensive.
For Grandma's too!.......2003-05-03
This is such a great book! Fun (and important) (how to tell a poisonious snake) things to learn in this book. And done with love with wonderful thoughtFULL thoughts at the end of each chapter - "COOL MOM THOUGHTS"! And written - obviously with such love and enthusiasm about being a mom. What, to me, is really great is this: So many times moms have so much "momming" to do that they can't spend the time they would like with their children - and THAT IS WHERE GRANDMA'S come in! There are great and fun things I look forward to teaching MY grandson -things I never would have known how to do (we will view a hummingbird up close!) --- THIS BOOK IS A GIFT TO ALL WHO LOVE CHILDREN!
