One of the foundation books in my library.......2005-11-11
When I was first learning to ride I found this book totally inspirational. Here was someone, finally, who could explain what you were meant to do to stay securely in the saddle. Heather discusses the common but totally unhelpful advice given by instructors to novices such as; 'sit deep' or 'lean back' . For the bemused novice it is such a relief to find that you aren't a total dimwit!
The photos are clear and I appreciated that she used 'ordinary' riders so that you could look at common faults and how they corrected them.
The initial text on Heathers own brand of saddle, seat savers and the use of the Pelham was interesting but went on for too long. The 'sales pitch' for her saddles and seat saver wasn't really appropriate in an instructional book. For those not able (or wanting) to buy additional gear these sections added little or no value to the book.
There were also some unexplained personal reveries in the book that made it a little 'me me me', and she often went off on tangents in order to leacture on how bad other trainers were or to talk about personal experiences with 'abuse' (that she apparently did nothing about) but overall this is a good book. I still refer back to it from time to time and it is usually greatly appreciated whenever I lend it out to fellow riders.
And I am PICKY!!.......2005-03-21
This is THEE best book I have ever read. I have never read and applied so many techniques from one book that have actually worked. I am absolutely positive that you will find no other book that comes close to this.
This book is amazing! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who.........2004-03-03
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who rides. Young, old, learning or advanced. This book has LOTS of great techniques, and ideas. I really liked this book because the approaches used are soft on the horse, and easy for the rider to execute. Two pieces of information I got from this book, that will always stick in my mind, are: 1. When buying or picking a saddle to ride in, look at the placement of the stirrup bars. If the bar is placed really close to the front of the saddle, your leg will be pulled forward, and therefore out of the Classical position and infront of your centre of balance. So choose a saddle that puts you in the "correct position so you are not fighting the very tool that is meant to assist you". 2. When riding in a circle or turning a corner, DO NOT turn your shoulders to the inside as suggested by almost ALL coaches!! It forces your weight to your outside and makes that leg stiff. Horses want, by nature, to keep us centred in the saddle, as it is uncomfortable for them to carry us if we are hanging off the side of the saddle. Horses will try to step under us to keep us balanced, and will therefore drift to the outside if you turn your shoulders in because your weight will be shifted the outside, and you will not be able to lighten and move the outside leg back to support the horses motion on the outside. Anyway, READ THE BOOK!! It is wonderful. You will learn a lot even if you are an Olympic rider, you will learn something!!!!! The soft approaches allow your horse to move freely. GOOD LUCK everyone with your horses!!! :)
The best book I have read.......2003-02-07
This would have to be the best book that I have read. It is makes perfect sense and gives clear and logical instructions on aids.
Not to mention that there is support websites ...for those who want to ask questions. No other author I know is willing to give that support.
I would definately recommend this training book over any others.
Book Description
This is the book for anyone who has ever looked at a horse and wondered: "What is he thinking?" "Why did he do that?" or, more often, "Why won't he do that?"
Here you will find a fascinating study of the behavior and psychology of the horse combined with clear explanations of the basic concepts of balance, of both horse and rider. The book will enable you to understand the mind of the horse and what makes him tick. You will learn to understand what he is trying to tell you, and how to communicate with him. IN HARMONY WITH YOUR HORSE shows you how to develop a better relationship with your horse and become the best of friends.
Clare Albinson offers unique insight into why horses behave in certain ways. She shows us how we can solve problems, improve behavior and performance, and create--both mentally and physically--a harmonious partnership between horse and rider.

Dont waste your money.......2005-03-09
I would retitle this book How to Dominate Your Horse With Fear and Punishment. Some of the suggestions are likely to get an inexperienced person hurt and will certainly cause problems for horses. Even some of the photos are painful to look at, such as the foal panicing with a rope around it's neck, or the rider attemting Piaffe by using draw reins. Instead of buying this book, please buy one of Mark Rashid's books and learn how to be a good leader for your horse.
A Great Little Book.......2001-05-16
For such a short and inexpensive book, it was very enlightening to me and it may have unlocked the secret to understanding my horse and why he gets so spooky out on the trails when I ride alone. It explains why a horse lacks confidence in its rider/handler and tells you how you can give the horse the confidence it needs. Reading this book turned on a light bulb in my brain and I think, by following the advice in the book, I can finally have the right relationship with my horse.

Gorgeous book, but somewhat confusing.......2007-08-24
Beautiful pictures and well written, but the format may be confusing for a beginner. It was for me. At first I thought, "300 recipes all in one skinny book?" Then I understood why. Many, if not most of the "recipes," just have a list of materials and additives, but no procedure per se. For procedure the reader is instructed to see elsewhere in the book.
For instance, Recipe #175 for Triangles, which immediately caught my eye, lists the amount of melt and pour base, drops of fragrance, additives (in this case, "green, yellow, and red soap curls cut from soap sheets"), and the size of mold needed. Then it directs the reader to "See 'Soap in Soap' in the Designer Techniques section" for the how-to. Ok, let's go see... Ahh, step three tells me to follow the instructions for "Embedded Toy Soaps," yet another section to which I must refer in order to make the Triangles. Suddenly I feel like I'm on a scavenger hunt just to make a couple of bars of soap. By this time, my excitement has fizzled and I'm ready to look elsewhere... as in another book altogether. As a beginner, I'm really looking for specifics. This book was not for me. I did enjoy reading the general info on soapmaking, that was helpful. And the pictures were gorgeous to look at, but I'm glad I only borrowed this book from the library and didn't actually pay money for it.
300 Handcrafted Soaps: Great Melt & Pour Projects.......2007-03-09
Terrific! So many ideas and so little time! I made about a dozen varieties of soap, and each was delightful.

Great for new soap makers.......2006-07-19

Good for older modern roses.......2006-11-05
This is an excellent book for those gardeners wanting information on many of the older hybrid teas and floribundas plus climbers that are carried by only specialized rose nurseries. This book also tells it like it is and so you get the negative aspects of some roses. Yes the book is VERY large but perfect to raise a small child to the table.
The Ultimate Rose Book.......2005-10-10
This is such a lovely book, it's worth owning just to look at the beautiful photographs of roses. However, it offers much more. There are full descriptions of each rose, including origin, developer, growth, fragrance, etc. I needed to find a rose developed in Germany. Using this book I created quite a long list of potential roses. When I located a grower of the rose I wanted, it was interesting to see this book prominently displayed among his reference works. Highly recommended.
Best Coffee Table Rose Book.......2004-09-19
This is the first Rose Book in my collection; it is responsible for my interest in roses. It is the biggest book of my rose book collection; in height, thickness or weight. Its production qualities are high and more than a decade after purchasing it, it is a book I still hold dear.
Over 1500 roses are presented, and for each there is a photo. The writing is clear and concise. And more than any other reference, we hear the writer's voice. When Macoboy particularly likes a rose, we know it. If he were writing a scientific reference, this may not be quite appropriate, but this personal voice brings us a step closer to viewing the roses as he does. And this draws us in.
A few bits of crucial information are listed in tabular form, the rose's breeder, its class, and how fragrant the rose is. Entries are listed alphabetically in three main sections: Species Roses, Miniature Roses, All other roses.
The book was published just after the commercial success of Austin's first remontant English roses and a handful of these roses are included.
But almost twenty years after its first release (the edition I write about was printed in the late 1980's), the book is beginning to look and feel dated. There has been a huge amount of work in the area of minis and this section seems quite dated. A significant portion of the Hybrid Tea roses and floribundas are not in commerce - not even at specialty nurseries. And many of the most popular of these classes do not appear. To make matters worse, a noticable portion of the roses Macoboy treasures were distributed only in Australia, so European and American gardeners never would have had a crack at them.
The photos are a mixed bag. On one hand almost every rose about which he writes is photographed. This is a monumental achievement. Few rose books come so close to complete photographic coverage as this one, and any that acheive full photographic coverage are less encyclopedic in scope and/ or present smaller photos. This may be the most photographically generous rose book in print.
Most of the rose photos are pretty good. Many are excellent. And some of the excellent ones fill a whole large page. The layout is large and the feeling it creates is lush and luxurious. But a few of the photos are seriously flawed. One photo, for instance, is of a rose that is waving back and forth madly in the wind and all we can see about the rose is that the flower is reddish - the whole photo is a big smudge. And there are a few cases in which we have serious questions about color reproduction.
So who should buy such a book? Well, if you are a rose-lover and wish to draw someone else into the field, this may be the best book to do it. The lavish illustration and infectious writing will do the trick better than just about any other book. And if you are a rose-lover and you want a coffee table book on roses, this may be the best choice. Or, if you know someone who is a little interested in gardening but knows nothing of roses and is afraid to take the plunge, this would be a good introductory gift.
If you just want a reference, get Botanica's Roses it is more up-to-date and it presents more roses. And visit RoseFile.com for other info on roses and to get help finding more books about roses at Amazon.com.
detailed, classic book.......2003-06-06
I love this book. I have been wanting to buy it for 2 years now and finally found it on amazon.com for much cheaper. At some stores this book goes for $100!
I love it because it is HISTORIC and GOOD FOR GARDENERS! I like how the author talks about the rose in a mythical and realistic point of view. He gives history and information for scientists.
I have never loved a book as much as I love this one. I treasure it. I am never going to let go of it. I especially love the front cover. The roses are all huddled together in different colors, and they almost appear as if they are people. The photography is magic!
Simply said, if you love romantic style books with also some useful information about gardening this the one for you.
Not the best book available!.......2002-07-03
I'm sorry but this book just didn't do it for me! It is too large and heavy, not to mention expensive. The photgraphs aren't as clear as other books (namely Botanica's Roses)and it doesn't included many of the most popular roses.
Yes, it does describe each rose, if fragrant, how often it blooms and any known diseases, but then so do other books!
My advice is to buy Botanica's Roses. It is paperback, much smaller and lightweight (ideal for taking to the nursery).
So save the [price] and get the better book!

Good advice for growing miniature roses.......2003-10-09
The author is a judge for the American Rose Society and is an expert on growing miniature roses. The information included here is thorough and covers the following asepcts of growing these roses -
*An entertaining history of the rose
*A botany lesson (way more than I needed to know!)
*How to select the best varieties
*Growing outdoors
*Growing indoors
*What to do about diseases and pests
*Winter Protection and Care
*Eshibiting roses
*Photographing roses
*Hybridizing roses
*Drying roses
*Arranging roses
*A plug for the American Rose Society
Not included are profiles of individual roses (there are probably way too many anyway) or anything on landscaping with miniatures. The information that is included is thorough and well written. The $17.95 retail price seems high for such a small book but this could be because it is published by a small publishing house. The information contained in it though will be very valuable and useful for gardeners seeking information on how to grow these little charmers.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book but many gaps in information for Americans........1999-09-06
Hawthorne's book will be a must for buyers more interested in books on the topic of roses than in comprehensive information on the care and maintenance of the flowers themselves. Americans, in my opinion, will find themselves lost in the text because few of the miniatures familiar to them are mentioned or pictured in the book. For rosarians in climates more hostile to rose culture than is Great Britain, there are gross omissions in very necessary information on diseases, pests and cultural practices. For example, there is no mention of RRD (Rose Rosette Disease), methods of winterizing, or the dreaded spider mite--the most destructive insect predator of minis in the USA. The cultivars are treated rather casually as to correct species names, hybridizers, availablity for purchase, hardiness. This last quality is very important in America with its radically differing temperature zones. I was disappointed in the scope of the book because good straightforward instructions specific to minis are in short supply.
