1 out of 5 stars Abuse your dog to make him do tricks? No thanks!.......2004-06-20

Written by a very old trainer with the old "make your dog do it or else" attitude. What fun is this for the dog?
Motivational training has come a long way in the past 30 years, but this author has chosen to totally ignore new and more humane methods of dog training.
If you used some of these training "tricks" in modern obedience classes, you'd be asked to leave the class - or else they'd call the cops on you.
Cruel training methods and a lot of bad advice, all in one book. What a bargain!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2004-04-02

Sorry, this book is total garbage. It was written as a cutsie atempt to package old training techs. that didn't work very well in a new shiny package to line the author's pocket.
If you've attended *one* basic obedience class anywhere, you know more than the author - save you money, there are tons of good books about dog tricks. This is not one of them, however!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time..........2003-12-08

Great, a no talent AKC judge whose claim to fame is getting pets ( not his ) into the movies thinks he can train dogs. Well, he can't, and that's pretty obvious from his crappy writing.

Save yourself some money and skip this one!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a blast!.......2002-04-09

If you have a smart dog (like my Bo Diddley-LOL!) you will love teaching the tricks described in this book to the delight of your friends and family!! What a fun book!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-03-23

This book teaches an owner how to teach fun tricks to the dog. It is easy to understand and easy to teach. Tricks help make better dogs.

Book Description

No one could describe NATURE JOURNAL as a blank book. Clare Walker Leslie has transformed what could have been an ordinary diary into something truly unique. The text and illustrations offer just the right amount of inspiration and guidance to help the journal-keeper begin and succeed at making this book his or her own.

First Clare explains to the budding journal-keeper how to get started and suggests some possible formats to follow. She even includes a few sample pages from her own journal as inspiration.

Then come the journal pages themselves. The left-hand page has ghosted-back lines for those who prefer a sense of structure. The right-hand pages are left blank for sketching or writing. Short, inspirational quotes and exercises to help guide the journaling process are scattered among the pages.

At the back of the journal is Clare's mini-field guide, packed with essential information on how to recognize (and draw!) basic families of birds, insects, and trees, thus sparing the journal-keeper the trouble of lugging multiple field guides into the wild. An elastic band keeps paper from flapping while you're writing, holds specimens, and acts as a bookmark. Drop it in the mud. Get trail mix stuck between the pages. This journal can take it! Printed on recycled, acid-free paper with a lay-flat binding.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2007-07-18

If you have ever read one of Clare Walker Leslie's books before, then it won't surprise you that this is a Journal that invites you to go out into nature daily, but gives you ways to make your journal special and your own personal work of art. She shows you the basics of how to draw birds, flowers, trees, etc. to make your time in the outdoors more fun. If you follow her ideas, you will find that you will get down your old journals for years to come and look at them. They will all bring back fond as well as bad memories. You will find yourself putting them all down.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome companion to "keeping a nature journal".......2006-03-28

If you have the original book "Keeping a Nature Journal" then you will find this journal to be awesome. It is for using what you learned in book 1 to make your own recordings. Beautifully bound. Very nice item. Of course it is blank...it is a journal.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Make My Mistake!.......2005-10-23

The editorial of this book is inadequate. It should say in bold: "This book has LOTS of blank pages for you to use."

If you are looking for a book on HOW to journal this is *NOT* the product you want. This book is just as it says:

A journal (i.e. lots of BLANK pages for $11+ dollars!)

If you are wanting a book on how to journal buy her other book... "Keeping a Nature Journal: Discover a Whole New Way of Seeing the World Around You"

2 out of 5 stars It did not help .......2007-05-08

Hello I ordered this book before I got a ferret and we read the whole book but the ferret still stinks and the book said they knew of great solutions to Ferret problems in the house. So the most important thing did not work and now we are stuck with a ferret! Most of her other things did not work either! So the book was not that great, sorry!

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-02

Not just a training manual, but a guide to understanding the psychology of your fert, so you have a closer relationship. This book uses the new positive training methods popular in the dog training field over the past few years and applies them to ferrets. And I can tell you, it works! My ferret is very well behaved and has become a full-fledged member of our family.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my ferret and my needs.......2007-02-23

Easy to read and succinct . Also, had valuable information without a lot of fluff. An excellent read, thanks.

    3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-02-16

This magazine was okay. It really didn't tell a ferret owner anything new. Might be good for a newbie owner. Ferrets for Dummies has more information.

McGowan's idiot-prof instructions proved themselves when me and some friends built this dinosaur in 7th grade. Although I am an avid model builder this was the first time I hade built a model made of things other than plastic. Surprizingly the chicken bones were easy to work with. We finished the model in about two months(working only one day a week). So if your looking to build an unusual model but this book!

    Book Description

Ever wondered what goes on inside your dog's mind? Sure you have. We all have. Now you have a rare and unique opportunity to take a walk around your dog's world, with the perfect guide and narrator-your dog.

In Hi! It's Me, Your Dog! Emmy-winning journalist Lisa Mendoza's irrepressible, sometimes urbane, sometimes earthy, dog temporarily becomes "your" dog and speaks out for dogs everywhere, explaining and commenting on a multitude of dog needs, dog concerns, dog habits, and dog characteristics.

Part psychologist, part vet, part comedian, but always pure dog and pure companion, your dog provides clear, informative, and entertaining answers to questions such as:

    * Am I really as smart as the average three-year-old child?
    * Do I feel the same emotions that humans feel?
    * How does my breed affect my behavior?
    * Do I have nightmares?
    * Why do I have a tail?

Your dog also addresses many issues which are important to any dog owner, including feeding, training, the care and treatment of diseases and injuries, bathing and general maintenance, breeds of dogs and dog history.

So, go ahead, take a walk and have a talk with your dog, one that will keep you chuckling even as you learn.

This unique treatise, written so that readers of all ages can climb into the fur of our best friend and see the world at knee-level, is an extraordinary step towards reconciliation of the love-hate relationship between our two species; Ms Mendoza, from her lengthy experience and keen insight and empathy with dogs of all nations, has made a giant first step for mankind towards co-existence with our canine companions, who are unequalled in their capacity for unconditional love and loyalty, humans coming in a distant second... :>)

I am so glad to have this book. I thought it was a cute idea but I had no idea of how informative and helpful it is. I have always enjoyed the dogs I have owned over the years and I thought I knew a lot about them, but this book gets you thinking and aware of so much more and it increases your joy of having a dog. I think it is a great book for new dog owners, especially if you have a dog for the first time. This book will often be a gift I give in the future.

      Book Description

Today most people spend the bulk of their day indoors, plugged into technology but completely disconnected from nature. Reestablishing a connection with the natural realm isn't just a question of wanting to do it, it's knowing how to do it. Awakening to Nature is practical primer for those who've lost touch with nature. It offers a variety of simple, sensible ways to maintain a fulfilling relationship with the natural world on a daily basis, without giving up the conveniences of modern life.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Author Who Has Connected to the Healing Power of Nature.......2003-06-19

Readers: I am going to get right to the point about this book. The three great strengths of Charles Cook's "Awakening to Nature" are: (1) his intimate knowledge of the natural world; (2) the descriptive language he uses and (3) perhaps most the most important strength, what I call the "micro-structure" of the book itself.

Cook is believable. It's quite obvious to me that he has recreated and worked in natural settings. He has accumulated an earthy knowledge of nature that is revealed in his writing. And the language he uses in the book is detailed, descriptive, and at times, challenging to the reader. Perusing through "Awakening to Nature is like having your own nature guide, philosopher, and therapist all rolled up into one.

The third great strength of the book is once again the micro-structure Cook uses. By micro-structure, I am referring to the the detailed sections he has created within each chapter. As a prospective reader, you are not going to see this micro-structure by reading through an online table of contents. Here's an example: In Chapter 14, "Going With the Flow of the Water," Cook includes separate and highly descriptive sections entitled: "Brooks, Creeks, Streams, and Rivers;" "Exploring a Waterway on Foot;" "Waterfalls and Cascades;" "Communing With a Waterfall;" "Lakes and Ponds;" "Circumnavigating a Lake;" "The Ocean;" "Opening Yourself to the Sea;" and "Snow and Ice." Each section is very well written and could be considered a nature essay in of itself.

When reading through "Awakening to Nature," I thought of nature writers Enos Mills and John Muir. And when hiking through the Colorado foothills and backcountry with friends, I thought of Charles Cook and this book, one of the most beautiful treatises on nature that I have ever read.

If you yearn to reacquaint yourself with the natural world, in any environment, I strongly urge you to read this book.

I purchased this book to get some ideas for embellishing my crazy quilts and have not been dissapointed. This book explains the stitches well and also shows how you can place beads with the hand embroidery to enhance your design. There are quite a few ideas and the pictures are very enticing. I have used several ideas from this book and gotten rave reviews on the quilt blocks I have done. Well worth the money!

            Book Description

A collection of evocative personal essays about the practical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of gardening, including gardening tips, recipes, and ideas.
With warmth, wit, and wisdom, author Joyce McGreevy looks to gardening as a source of creativity, spirituality, and inspiration, and she offers practical ideas for gardening--and living life--to the fullest. Her essays include "Gardening Without a Clue," which asserts that one's sense of wonder coupled with nature's own revelations are the greatest gardening teachers; "It's All Rented," which begins as a humorous account of a gardening experience in Ireland and becomes a gentle call for stewardship, rather than ownership, of the Earth; and "Eating, Sleeping, and Living in the Garden," which invites readers to rediscover the traditional rituals of leisure.
With so many of us longing to slow our frantic pace and live more authentically, this timely book shows us how gardening "by Heart" can help us do just that and thereby enrich all aspects of our lives.

2 out of 5 stars It depends on your personality.......2006-05-16

If you like to curl up with volume of beautiful, rambling prose, then this is the book for you.

If you grow impatient with an author who takes 9 pages to discuss an idea that could comfortably fit into 2 - 3 paragraphs, then you should look for a different book. The writing style reminded me of Charles Dickens, who reportedly was paid by the word.

Yes, the book is beautifully written, but I simply lost patience with it. I also found it to be a bit preachy, as if the author believes herself to be the only one who knows the joy of simply being in a garden, observing all of its wonders, and must teach it to the rest of us morons. (I'm a bit sensitive to preachiness, however, and the average reader might disagree!)
It all depends on your personality.

            5 out of 5 stars A Joy to Read.......2002-07-13

This book is a jewel, a profound pleasure to read. From the first page, one enters a world of flowers and tendriled plants, Earth with its seasons and cycles, touching memories, wisdom, and wit. The book uses this material to present a rich philosophy for living life.

The author not only recounts delightful anecdotes, but also offers abstract ideas with precision clarity, utilizing graceful and wonderfully chosen vocabulary. Her metaphors and similes sometimes make you gasp, they are so fresh and original. They are also beautifully couched within the overall garden theme.

This book puts the reader in touch with the richness, depth, and beauty of life. It is true writing by a gifted writer.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book in your garden!.......2002-07-01

I just finished reading this lovely book over a two day period while sitting in my garden. Joyce McGreevy's advice about living in the moment and appreciating even the smallest living thing should become words to live by for all of us hurtling through the beginning of this new century. She encourages her readers to establish and maintain contact with nature, even if it is just being aware of the new sprouts on our pepperomia. She offers receipes, practical advice and unique ideas about how to engage even a recalcitrant child or a grumpy crumudgeon in the wonders of the natural world.
This is a MUST read for all gardeners no matter what your experience!

5 out of 5 stars Dear Sister, We have a new best friend!.......2002-05-22

            Dear Sister,
We have a new best friend.

Joy! Today is Book Club day, and Joyce McGreevy, the author of "Gardening by Heart" is coming to talk to/with our group. We just finished her book and I loved it. It isn't a novel. It is not a self-help book. It isn't a gardening book. It isn't a poetry book. It is a poetic story about nurturing our hearts, our gardens. Hmm, is it a story? No, actually. There is no story-story, just a string of anecdotes and remembrances involving the author's mother and siblings and friends and jobs.

            Her writing is the thing.

She writes like a poet, but it isn't poetry per se. Well, I'll go upstairs and get the book and excerpt it for you...hold on...

Without looking, I just opened the book to this page:

            Strawberries at Dawn

"The first pale amber rays of sun have backlit the somber mountains. A coastal live oak rustles. The birds are stirring. In my garden, the poppies are rolled up tightly like saffron scrolls. I'm on my knees, coffee within easy reach, as I set a blue salvia into the ground the way a parent might ease a sleepy child back into bed."

Dawn is the best time of day to do almost anything. The phone holds its tongue and there are no appointments. One's mind is fertile with dreams whose meanings flower best in a hushed world."

            [Isn't that wonderful?] more...

"In the garden, time itself seems to expand. Later in the day I may fret about getting to this appointment or achieving that task "on time", but early in the morning I seem to have all the time in the world. The killing frost of anxiety is held at bay, letting ideas and insights establish strong roots."

She starts each chapter with a quote from another author or poet.

"Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace."--May Sarton, Journals

She advocates keeping a nature journal...at the office.

"...it consisted of a burgeoning collection of index cards, each of which bore a hastily penciled sentence or two about something I had observed, whether on the way to work, from my window, or during a lunch break....The French say of good gardeners not that they have a green thumb but that they have un main vert, a green hand. With every entry I penciled in I was keeping my hand green and subsequently nurturing the heart, even in the midst of computers, stark white partitions, and fluorescent lighting."

Don't you just love her? I can't wait to meet our new best friend.

            Love,
            Your sister

5 out of 5 stars Grow your plants; grow your soul.......2001-09-04

I'm free, free, at last! Emancipated from a gardener's work ethic--weeding, deadheading, fertilizing etc. Joyce McGreevy goes literally to the heart of gardening and nourishes the soul with her grace and wit and exquisite writing. McGreevy's descriptions of her mother's gardens as a place for relating to people, for celebrating the spirit of the day or season, help the gardener to not only grow the roses, but wake up and smell them and share all that with others. Just BE in the garden. Of course, there won't be a garden without some routine work, but this inspirational little book shows us how to use our gardens or other people's gardens to renew our connection to the earth, to all creation, and to heal from modern day busy sickness. I hope to hear more from this talented writer.

Stinky is a lovable little bulldog who moves to a new neighborhood. The mama bulldog teaches Stinky a valuable lesson in not judging others.

This is a family friendly, ideal for classrooms as well story about acceptance of differences in others. This is non-judgmental and very gently written. Get this along with Gloria Estafan's book, " The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog." Both are delightful and enriching books with the same timeless message.

This was the first book I bought for my son. It teaches the message of undersanding and that everyone is different...but just because you are different does not mean you should be treated differently.

My daughter and I found Stinky's story to be very touching. It was simply heartwarming and enjoyable to read. My daughter enjoyed being able to read some of the words on her own. It's just a wonderful book from beginning to end.
