Fascinating Look at Predators in Florida.......2007-05-06

ALLIGATORS, SHARKS & PANTHERS by Charles Sobczak was one of those books that reads like a great thriller/horror novel: you are so fascinated you can't put it down, yet you have nightmares from reading it.

The focus of the nonfiction book is on Florida's predators and their relationship to man. Alligators get the most coverage, followed by sharks (specifically bull sharks and great whites), with panthers getting the least amount of writing time. I have to say I learned a lot about all three animals and their attack patterns, which was delightfully surprising because I love watching Shark Week and other predator TV specials on Animal Planet, etc.

I also found myself sharing a lot of this info with my friends and family, especially warning them not to go swimming with dogs at the beach or elsewhere.

The most riveting moments of the book have to do with the numerous descriptions of actual attacks. Here, the victims become "real people" and their last moments on earth are described in brutal detail. It is hard not to get sucked into these stories.

The parts I found most depressing related to the chapters on extinction, over-harvesting, and the deliberate extermination of animal populations. I can't imagine my children or grandchildren growing up in a world without animals like sharks, big cats, and alligators, all of which fascinate and inspire, and all of which are essential to a healthy ecosystem.

The only problems I had with the book were the small amount of redundancy (the same exact info seemed to be repeated here or there), as well as the unexpected alligator story thrown into the shark or panther sections. These stories were interesting, but seemed to be located in the wrong chapter.

Otherwise, I thought this book remarkably interesting and easy to read and would definitely recommend it to animal lovers or to anyone planning on visiting Florida any time soon. I also recommend MONSTER OF GOD by David Quammen, a similarly-themed book that looks at Africa's crocodiles, India's lions, Siberia's tigers, and Romania's bears. For those interested in big cat reserves, JAGUAR by Alan Rabinowitz deals with efforts to study and protect jaguars in Belize.

The Other Side of a Perspective.......2007-04-16

This book has soared to the top of my favorite "Non-Fiction" list.
Mr. Sobczak has really grabbed for the 'gut' with an alternate perspective of Nature and our role in it. The call to consider the other side of the 'predator' coin, combined with backed up research makes this book a must read. It contains an educational quality that would suffice to make it a 'required' read in the Nation's school systems.

This was one of my first applique books.It is a charming book for beginner appliquers.Many heart constructs,as well as simple piecing.Each pattern is labeled by ease of construction according to the various method(s) used to applique.Elly explains 10 different ways to applique.The directions are clear.Each project gives you the best method of applique to use(of course you can use which ever you want) for ease of construction. This is a great little book to learn how to applique.

A very small world.......2003-07-14

The writer presents 18 miniature landscapes which, she says, "represent a very personal synthesis of the bonsai and penjing traditions". These landscape are made up of the usual tiny trees, moss and gravel, but they also contain intricate rocky "outcrops" which form the basis of the entire landscape. Her creations combine the delicacy of the tiny landscape with the ruggedness of rock and tree to unique effect.

The writer gives detailed instructions for making each of the landscapes, including - I kid you not - how to make all the rocky outcrops yourself. Given patience, skill and delicacy of touch almost anyone could follow these instructions and make a very attractive table top landscape.

The writer was born in Singapore and studied art in England. She is a judge in the bonsai category at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. She approaches her miniature landscapes from the point of view of a painter, and she incorporates the Chinese principles of Tao and the balance of yin and yang to create harmony in these beautiful miniature worlds.

This book is quite rediculous.......2005-03-29

The "Claude Glass" sounds like a very interesting topic, but the handling of this topic by the author A. Maillet is out of the limits of professional academic research. The very short chapters filled with heterogeneous thesis and arbitrary pictures and diagrams evade a clear art-historian or philosophical approach of the Claude Glasse's use for artists in the 18th century. The first interesting thesis, that you expect normally in the introduction, is presented on page 163 (of 221 pages main-Text): "The Claude Mirror... is... an apparatus that enables one to transpose reality into a melodious harmony." In the internet you find articles that give you more insight for free.

Highly technical and informative........2000-10-19

This book, beyond a doubt, has all of the information the serious bonsai artist needs to know. A friend gave me this book when I first expressed an interest in bonsai, and it succeeded in intimidating me. The authors provide very thorough details about creating bonsai, and take it to the level of science rather than art. However, it is because of this high degree of detail that I was struck with how serious the art really can be. I find it unfortunate that it is currently out of print, since it does cover bonsai in such detail. I would tend to recommend Japanese Art of Miniature Trees and Landscapes to the person who is quite dedicated to pursuing the art, and would not recommend it to a person with a more casual interest.

Excellent bonsai book.......2000-03-31

This is one of the best bonsai books. It should be in every seriuos hobbyst's library. It contains all the information needed to get started on bonsai. It has an apendix for tools, equipment and soil, and another one very helpfull, with plant names in Chinese-Japanese Characters. Yoshimora is a truly great Bonsai master. The disvantages are that the B&w photos are not of very good quality and the text can be a little tedious to read

This book deals mostly with miniature landscaping in an outdoor setting and is not very useful for landscaping a dollhouse. Many of the plants recommended are very difficult to find and require an outdoor location. Very few indoor plants are mentioned. It's a Great book for someone interested in outdoor gardening in miniature.

Book on Emotional Effects of Divorce on children and adults.......2007-07-15

This book looks at the emotions and stages that families go through with "good, bad, and ugly divorces". The book includes rarely discussed syndromes that may occur when one or more parents engage in emotional warfare and the resulting trauma for the children. For example, I have never read such a good description of parent alienation. This is an excellent book to give to people while they are considering divorce so they know what they have to face or how to proceed so that the children are spared great pain and fear. It is an excellent guide for mental health professionals for assessment of children and couples. (I am in social work.)

I particularly like the fact that Neil Kalter describes the emotions that children have. As they often hide them in a different way than I would expect as a parent.
Now I can see much more clear what my children reveal to protect me.
Kalter offers good to the point advice on how to help children.
Which is exactly what you need as a parent.
I greatly recommend this book.

Imminently helpful to separating families.......1999-10-08

As a divorce mediator, I've loaned several copies of this book to separating couples, never to have them returned. Now that the book has been reprinted, I'm ordering a dozen copies for my program, and will give it to separating parents because of its powerful message: "remove your kids from the middle of your marital conflict!"

Growing Up With Divorce by Dr. Neil Kalter has proven to be an excellent tool for helping the children through the emotional pitfalls of divorce. It is divided by age catagory, tells of the signs of emotional distress then gives practical solutions to help the children through their issues. Good tool to use again and again.
