5 out of 5 stars The book is better, in my opinion........2006-10-11

A friend recently gave me a copy of the "Dances With Wolves" movie (one of my favorites since seeing it years ago) and the book which I had never read. After a repeat viewing of the movie, I read the book.

The main reason I normally prefer the book versions of a story is that one gets to know the thoughts and feelings of the main characters that embellish each scene and are actually sometimes needed to understand the full scope.

This reason especially applies in the case of "Dances With Wolves," written by Michael Blake. The main character is alone with only his horse, the infrequent visits of a lone wolf and his brief journalized thoughts for company until his company includes a nearby camp of Indians. As the beautiful and memorable story transpires amidst a language barrier, one is privy to a richness of behind-the-scenes depth the movie version is limited in presenting.

There are a few variations between the movie and the book, including the ending (and I prefer the ending of the book), but if you liked the movie, you will love the book.

I saw the movie only once and it was good, but this book was way better! I can't wait to read Holy road.

4 out of 5 stars Dances With Wolves: a review.......2006-05-31

Michael Blake's book Dances With Wolves is a great read, and one that I really enjoyed. The story is about Lt. John Dunbar, a lieutenant in the Union army during the Civil War. After being sent to an abandoned post by a drunk General Lt. Dunbar is forced to live on his own without anybody knowing that he is stationed at Fort Sedgwick, due to the fact that the guy that drove him out there was killed on the trip back, and the General was admitted into a mental hospital. Living on his own Lt. Dunbar befriends the Comanche Indians living just down the river from him, after they try to steel his horse. And that sends him on a trip through life that will cause him to change forever.
I thought that Michael Blake did an excellent job of developing the characters, especially Lt. Dunbar, Stands With a Fist, and Kicking Bird. I personally felt like I knew these characters after I was about halfway through Dances With Wolves, I was even into predicting what each character would do next. I guess the fact that I was able to do that means that the book was some-what predictable, but that doesn't change the fact that it has a good plot.
Dances With Wolves has a great theme, saying that however alone you feel or think you are, there is always somebody around that you can befriend. You can see this in Dances With Wolves when Lt. Dunbar realizes that he is alone at Fort Sedgwick and that there are no replacements coming back. Which made him feel utterly and completely alone, even pushed him into depression. Then the Comanche Indian kicking Bird found him and his camp, and this started that process of Lt. Dunbar and the Comanche Indians befriending each other.

The Costner movie based on this book is one of my favorite movies ever, so it was only natural for me to pick this book when I saw it. As most would agree, the movie is NEVER as good as the book, so I quickly surmised that, since the movie was fabulous, the book must reach vast unknown limits of greatness, right? Well, not exactly. Michael Blake's writing of DANCES WITH WOLVES is certainly a good book and a wonderful story, it is Costner's ability to turn this story into such a brilliant production that is the real achievement here.

I have found that normally, if I like a movie and read the book afterwards, it serves to enhance what I saw on film. In this case, however, the book had somewhat the opposite effect for me. There are differences between the two that only seem to diminish Costner's work. A couple of things I knew already, such as Costner's use of the Indian Chief, Ten Bears, who I knew to have been a great Comanche, not a Sioux.

Well, as it turns out, the book is written to that effect. The Indians befriended by Lt. Dunbar and portrayed in the movie as Sioux, are actually Comanche. Now I can understand the alteration here, for a couple of reasons. First of all, though most Americans are notoriously ignorant of our rich history, for the most part, people do know the Comanche were the badest of the bad and it would be an increased degree of difficulty to portray the Comanche in a positive light as being rather passive and wanting only to be left alone to live in peace. Though the Sioux were hardly any more docile, their reputation is certainly not nearly as notorious. Also, for cinematic reasons, it's certainly understandable that the domain of the northern Sioux is a more picturesque backdrop that the barren plains of the Southern Comanche. Also, the Sioux language of the movie has a more poetic feel to it and is somewhat more widely recognized than the rather obscure Shoshonean spoken by the Comanche.

I hope I haven't given the wrong impression here. This is a very enjoyable read, though it is a rare occasion where the book was not nearly as enjoyable, for me at least, as was the movie.

I don't know why there are somewhat negative remarks about this book. I seriously loved this book and recomend everyone should read it sometime during their lifetime. It's just one of the many examples of the white man and his reckless and destructive behaviour, and pains suffered by the Indians who owned this land before any body else.
I took a course in Native Americans in college and you further see the destruction, chaos and murder that we the white have perpetrated. It's a very moving book and I found it to be inspiring on one side but also sad.
Trully a remarkable book, would recommend everyone should read it.

In The Holy Road, master storyteller Michael Blake at long last continues the saga. With their three children, they live peacefully in the village of Ten Bears. But there is unease in the air, caused by increased reports of violent confrontations with white soldiers, who want to drive the Comanche onto reservations. Disquiet turns to horror, and then to rage, when a band of white rangers descend on Ten Bears village, slaughtering half its inhabitants and abducting Stands With A Fist and her infant daughter. The three surviving great warriorsWind In His Hair, Kicking Bird, and Dances With Wolvesdecide they must go to war with the white invaders. At the same time, Dances With Wolves realizes that only he can rescue his wife and child. To much history mixed with fiction. Blake uses historical events and persons to write a mostly fictional book. Not enjoyabel for a historical interested person.

5 out of 5 stars May the People and the buffalo rise again.......2006-09-01

I really enjoyed this book. No, I really, REALLY enjoyed this book. The characters are so knowable, mournable, unforgettable. The stark closure of the story fits perfectly, to my taste, with the last condition of the Commanche, and was no doubt intended that way. As for Michael Blake, a great success is never without critics. I am not one of them.

I look forward to the celluloid version of this book. When this movie is made with the same vision and startling delivery as its predecessor, it will no doubt be a great film.

Since I was a young man, I have felt keenly and helplessly the loss of native languages, cultures, and civilizations on the American continents. May the People and the buffalo rise again.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......2006-03-22

This was an exceptional book. Once I started it I could not put it down. If you enjoyed "Dances With Wolves" you are ganna love this one.

4 out of 5 stars AN EPIC, BOTH TRAGIC AND BEAUTIFUL.......2005-12-27

An epic, both tragic and beautiful, "The Holy Road" is a sequel to the author's debut novel, "Dances With Wolves," which today is considered to be a seminal Western novel of our time.

Some 11 years have passed since Lt. John Dunbar left the world into which he was born to become the Comanche warrior Dances With Wolves and marry Stands With A Fist, a white woman who was raised in the Comanche world. They now have three children and are living contentedly in a village called Three Bears.

Their peaceful existence is short lived as white men attempt to drive the Comanches onto reservations, and the railroad, the white man's Holy Road, brings more settlers, more trouble, and violence. Marauders savage Three Bears, killing many of the people, and kidnaping Stands With A Fist and her baby daughter.

The three remaining warriors, including Dances With Wolves, must do battle with the white men, not only to try to save their way of life but to rescue the captives.

"The Holy Road," an exciting story of honor and courage, is a worthy sequel to "Dances With Wolves." It is tragedy brilliantly portrayed.

3 out of 5 stars Historical? Maybe not. Worthwhile read? Yes........2005-07-07

I heard an interview with Gary Paulsen after listening to one of his "Tucket" series books. He talks specifically about the historical inaccuracies in the Dances with Wolves series. I am inclined to agree with his assessment that an army officer in uniform would not have made it into a Comanche town alive after the Civil War. However, both Dances with Wolves and The Holy Road are interesting and thought provoking reads. Be prepared though, you probably won't like how The Holy Road ends. I was angry with how he killed off one of his main characters. It was glossed over too quickly in the book; Blake doesn't give the reader time to grieve the loss of a major character. If you like this book, I recommend reading Ride the Wind by Lucia St. Clair Robson.

Wolves and pigs have always been excellent fodder for suspenseful children's stories, and Swine Lake proves it once again, this time in the masterful hands of the late James Marshall and Maurice Sendak. Marshall wrote the book fully intending to illustrate it himself, but when he died in 1992, his good friend Sendak was charged with the challenging task of bringing this delightful work to life. And come to life it does! The rollicking tale opens with a mangy, hungry wolf on the prowl in an unfamiliar part of town. Soon the wolf's nose twitches uncontrollably. He smells pigs! Just across the street is a theater marquee bearing the words Swine Lake. Boarshoi Ballet. The wolf can scarcely conceal his delight, and "soon the aroma of pig, thinly disguised by French perfume, was making him swoon."

Snatching matinee tickets from a swanky ticket-scalping sow who arrives in a limousine, he enters the theater. "Had the ticket taker been more observant, he would have noticed the long claws and much that follows could have been avoided," Marshall adds parenthetically. The wolf is escorted by a distracted usher to his box seat, just a short pounce from the stage. When the show begins, the wolf ponders which might be the juiciest pig. But as he assesses the probable quality of the pork, he begins to get lost in the magical story, and decides to put off his attack until act 2... and in fact forgets to make his move altogether. That very night he breaks into his piggy bank and spends his last penny on a ticket for the evening performance of Swine Lake.

Anyone who is familiar with Swan Lake will be positively giddy to behold Marshall and Sendak's porcine take on this well-known ballet, but certainly no cultural context is necessary to appreciate the simple plot. With a winning story about the power of the theater to soothe the hungriest, toothiest of beasts, this fabulous team has made an absolutely historic contribution to children's literature. Fans will see a lighter, funnier side to Sendak than they've seen before, as Marshall's comic spirit gently guides his paintbrush and pens. (Click to see a sample spread. Book Description

When a lean and mangy wolf stumbles into the Boarshoi Ballet, he finds tasty pigs a-plenty, twirling and whirling in a performance of Swine Lake. Faced with all those luscious porkers, whats a hungry wolf to do? Well, something totally surprising, as it turns out.

Pure fun from Marshall and Sendak--an incomparable duo!

Hilariously melodramatic monologue, generous, engaging narrative and classic Sendak illustrations make this theatrical romp a favourite of adults and children alike.

If wolves went to ballet, they wouldn't go to Swan Lake, they would go to Swine Lake! We think 4th and 5th graders would like this book because it is more challenging. You should read it a couple times to really understand it and have fun reading it. It's a very good book. It has action in it. We thought it would be rated 4.

I bought this book for my three year old daughter for Christmas. Although she has nearly a hundred books, she has requested this one every night for three months. She knows most of it verbatim. I think the book's okay, but for her it is something truly special and charming. She enjoys the dilema of the wolf, the grumpy landlady and the diverse characters of the pigs. This is a great story for kids with budding imaginations.

              Book Description

The Historical Epic in Contemporary Hollywood seeks to document and explain a recent revival of historical epic films in Hollywood. Rather than relying on abstract theoretical approaches, James Russell employs empirical historical techniques to explore how industrial conditions, and the agendas of key directors, writers and producers, led to the increased production of historical epics such as Dances With Wolves (1990), Titanic (1997), Gladiator (2000) and The Passion of the Christ (2004).

The book begins by exploring the careers of filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Mel Gibson during the 1990s. Russell looks in detail at their agendas, the production of their films, and at the content of the films themselves. As the book progresses, he goes on to address the activities of the major studios, in terms of production and marketing, and looks at changing industrial conditions, such as the emergence of DVD. Finally, Russell examines social trends, particularly increasing levels of religious commitment and political division in America.

The Historical Epic in Contemporary Hollywood, which has been thoroughly researched in archival collections in Los Angeles and New York, deliberately focuses on the activities of individuals working in the Hollywood film industry - the result is an original and interesting account of the ways that contemporary epic films get made, and speak to modern audiences. Ultimately, the book argues that historical epics reappeared in the 1990s partly as a result of changing industrial conditions, but mainly because a generation of filmmakers, all born during the so-called `baby boom,' began to seek out meaningful ways of passing on historical knowledge to younger generations as they grew older. The epics released in the 1950s and 1960s, when Spielberg, Cameron, et al, were children constitute a key reference point in this process of renewal and reinvention in Hollywood.

If you liked the movie then this book is a must! Not only was Kevin Costner make one of the best films in history but he followed it up with this great book! My daughter picked this one up for me at a library sale. I didn't even know it existed to be honest or I would have purchased it myself. The book is a bit tattered so I checked out the local bookstore and although they didn't have it on the shelf, it can be ordered. If you liked the movie then consider this book for your collection. I fully recommend this great work of art by Mister Costner and friend.

I wonder if Kevin Costner even realizes the artistic and historic contribution he has made with this film. As an artist I found this book to satisfy my graphic appetite and as a romantic I have, once again, been allowed to travel back in time. Mr. Costner has shown us his artistic brilliance in so many ways and I thank him for his efforts. Enjoy the book; it is a treasure.

              Book Description

The art of pyrography -- burning designs into wood and many other materials -- can add a special touch to any project, including wooden trunks and jewelry, wildlife carvings, leather pictures, and paper collages. In this book, Al Chapman will explain the different tools and mediums that can be used, and will show you in detail how to use them for different effects. You will learn several methods of transferring a pattern onto your piece of wood or leather, how to give depth to your pictures with crosshatching, stippling, and flat-edge shading, how to make realistic-looking fur, and how to add shadows and highlights. Chapman's extensive experience with these techniques allows him to give you helpful hints for keeping your pictures realistic looking, with subtle and graceful lines. You will also learn how to use your pyrography techniques on paper, a technique that is useful for borders, collages, or decoupage. , All color illustrations, 8 1/2" x 11"

4 out of 5 stars Learning the Art of Pyrography.......2000-02-16

This book is a good beginners introduction to the wonderful world of Pyrography. Lots of color and illustrations with easy to comprehend text. I was a little disappointed in the photo references, which show an American made burning tool being used. This tool is not readily available worldwide and may deter a potential Pyrographer from pursuing the art any further. There are many other tools available for creating this art and it's a pity these options were not suggested in this book. The upside of the book is it's clear and precise layouts and (disregarding the obvious tool brand loyalty) the demonstration photos and sketches are first rate. I would have liked to see a bit more information on Pyrographing paper and gourds....Maybe Mr Chapman will honour us with a Vol.2? I think this book is must have for any Pyrographer, as any book of this type is always handy as a reference guide.

              3 out of 5 stars Offers a basic over-view of various methods.......1998-08-07

Being a wood burning artist, myself. I try to purchase all books available, on Pyrography. "Learning the Art of Pyrography" by Al Chapman, offers a very basic insight into wood burning. It did not offer much content, only lightly explaining various methods. If you are new to this form of art and want to get started, this will give you some clues. Including the purchase of tools, tips & cleaning. Don't expect to find detailed information on techniques. However,if you're really serious and want something more indepth. . . . I would suggest Bob Boyers, "The Amazing Art Of Pyrography." This book is a MUST! Al Chapman's book does include nice photos of wood burnings.

5 out of 5 stars The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll.......2004-04-14

As a serious midwestern home gardener who owns many gardening books, I was extremely pleased with this book. There is much valuable information in the way of photographs and writings. Gertrude Jekyll was doing 100 yrs ago, what modern landscapers claim they invented--that is, low maintenance, informal looks. The combination of her informal plantings applied to formal settings makes a wonderfully interesting contrast. Add to that her artistic genius, and these gardens are truly awe-inspiring.

As an Engish Gardener "displaced in Kansas" this book was a delight. Anyone who wants to plan a garden large or small should turn to this little gem written over 80 years ago. Miss Jekyll was the definitive garden planner, her ideas of colours and seasonal planting will inspire you to create a beautiful garden of your own. Quite the best of her kind.

This book has become my bedtime reading material. It offers an excellent summary of Jekyll's views on color, plant selection, the layout of beds and the philosophy of the garden. While I would have liked detailed drawings or layouts of the various gardens discussed, her written descriptions feed the imagination. I've already laid out a new garden border as a result of the insights gained, and I am inspired to read other works by Jekyll and others

5 out of 5 stars A Woman of the Garden of Lasting Wisdom.......2005-04-26

Perhaps it is due in part to that time of year when most of us turn to the exhilarating pleasures of watching Spring waken the dormant lawns and flowerbeds, the pots and trees that have survived the coffin of winter. Or perhaps it is the nostalgia of noting a friendly blossom from a wastrel seed from last summer's plant. Or perhaps it is that special time of day when, garden tended, we relax after our labors and read of the history of the smells and sights we've unblanketed. Whatever the reason, returning to the timeless writings of Gertrude Jekyll and the inimitable manner in which she shared her passion and love for her garden is renewing and rewarding.

In this beautiful book compiled by Cherry Lewis are photographs and numerous paintings that provided the atmosphere of an illuminated manuscript to the wise, warm, thoughtful and enormously timeless instruction for the gardener. Her writings are composed like conversations about old friends, and on reading we just happen to feel like one of them. Jekyll lived from 1843 to 1932 and never stopped discussing the care and management of the gardens she grew and those she designed. And her advice is superior to the many wordy, current 'how to' books on gardening because that advice comes not only from a botanist but also a naturalist.

This lavishly illustrated book contains some lovely old painting reproductions in super color and on quality paper. Appearing like a Valentine yet containing solid sage advice on horticulture, this book is a treasure house of information and reveries. And perhaps that is why it surfaces so comfortably during Spring to linger on the coffee table year round. A Gift. Grady Harp, April 05

4 out of 5 stars Restoring an historic garden.......2003-06-05

Imagine buying a delapidated old manor house old manor house with a large overgrown garden for a very reasonable price and finding that not only was the house historically important but the garden, invisible under weed growth, had been designed by one of the most famous of English garden designers. Itýs hard to imagine who was most fortunate - the purchasers who lucked into this masterpiece but who paid for it many times over in the toil and expense of careful restoration, or the nation who almost lost a yet another treasure to developers.

The Wallingers, looking for a house that was fairly close to London, but within their price range, took a chance on a most unprepossessing house. This book tells the story of the restoration of the garden to the exact specifications of Gertrude Jekyll. It must have been a daunting task. The plans themselves, once they were unearthed, were difficult to read. To be honest, they look like a bunch of scribbles and scrawls and to have deciphered them at all is a remarkable achievement.

This book covers the first fifteen years of the gardenýs re-birth. It is a detailed account, taken from Rosamund Wallingerýs diary, but it is written with wit and style and her frustrations and triumphs are felt rather than read. And all along you can follow the illustrations of how the garden progressed from months of ripping up and burning to the glorious borders, wild garden and rose garden of the present.

But this is a value-for-money book with the story of one familyýs life work , not just a collection of pretty garden pictures. Not many people restore gardens, we usually start off from scratch. So this is a whole new viewpoint, and there is much that we gardeners can learn from it.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and inspiring book.......2000-08-28

In 1983, Rosamund Wallinger (the author) and her husband purchased a turn-of-the-century manor house in Hampshire called Upton Grey, a large estate that needed many repairs and a derelict garden that was overgrown with weeds. While researching the history of the house, Wallinger learned that the garden was designed by the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. She had no interest in gardening before she moved to Upton Grey, but she did recognize Gertrude Jekyll's stature in gardening history, and so she set out to restore the garden to its original splendor, a task that would take more than a decade. She located Jekyll's original plans at the University of California and began a difficult process of translating the plans from Jekyll's bad handwriting and attempting to locate the plants that were originally used in the garden. Fortunately for us and herself, Wallinger kept a journal in which she documented her progress. The before and after photographs are amazing and the reader becomes quickly engrossed in Wallinger's project as well as a growing attachment to her menagerie of dogs, ducks and geese. This beautiful book will be an inspriation to any gardener, especially those have a formidable gardening challenge ahead of them.

5 out of 5 stars Gertrude Jekyll's Lost Garden: An Adventure in Restoration.......2000-08-25

During research for restoration of a derelict Arts and Crafts home, which had been designed by the famous English architect, Edwin Lutyens, to fit around the shell of an Elizabethan farmhouse, the new owners discovered that the original garden had been designed in 1908 by the legendary Gertrude Jekyll.

Rosamond Wallinger began research on the garden, discovered Jekyll's plans in the University of California's Bancroft Library, and `with the ignorance and enthusiasm of a true amateur', decided to restore the garden to its exact original glory

This story is a fascinating account of the labors, heartaches, and joys which accompanied the sixteen year project. It took her and her husband two years to remove the brambles and weeds which covered the two acres of original garden. The detective work required for the location of exact plants specified in the plans involved a global search and brought her many connections throughout England and Europe, gardeners who shared her enthusiasm for the project and provided information, seeds, and cuttings.

Wallinger, whose previous gardening experience was nearly non-existent, freely confesses the mistakes and mishaps which occurred during the project. Her meticulous records and beautiful photographs show the emergence of the now complete garden, the only fully restored Jekyll garden still in existence. Readers will enjoy the unfolding story, told with self-deprecating humor, which also contains practical advice and insight into the Jekyll's ,methods.

An eminently readable book of interest to garden historians, garden enthusiasts, and arm chair gardeners as well.

(The garden is now, in season, open to the public on a regular schedule, and visitors today can enjoy the paradise garden envisioned by Gertrude Jekyll nearly a century ago.)
