Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definite common sense.......2007-02-15

I love this book and it's no non-sense common sense approach to training dressage horses. This book starts out teaching the basics from the ground up. This book is a must for any rider, and not just the dressage rider, although I agree that some concepts are a tad too advanced for beginners. Common Sense Dressage will bring your overall riding skills to the next level.

3 out of 5 stars Revelant material........2006-12-18

Although the material was useful, I found the organization and presentation a bit confusing for the novice.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the dressage student..........2000-10-21

This book is an excellent one for any student of dressage. It might be a wee bit complicated for the absolute beginner to riding, but for most who have had some training it's appropriate. The book has a ton of excellent diagrams and illustrations, many showing the view from above so that the desired position of the horse is clearly shown. There are a number of exercises in each chapter which allow the rider to work on various elements on their own as well as with a trainer.

Chapters include: The Horse - How it Functions; Lungeing; The Work in Hand; The Basic Work in All Three Gaits; Activating the Hindquarters; Competition; Special Exercises for Problems; Canter Work; Collection, Extension and In-Between; Piaffe; and Passage. There is also an index which allows you to refer to specific topics.

All in all this is a valuable addition to the library of any equestrian interested in this branch of the discipline, and one I will be sharing with my trainer. Don't hesitate to buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Diagrams and clear, concise text........2000-10-18

This is an excellent book for individuals with some basis in dressage as well as a basic understanding of horses and their movement. The many diagrams included with the text are clear, concise and explain how to apply leg, seat and rein aides correctly for most dressage movements. There is also a chapter explaining the timing of the rider's movements for transitions between gaits as well as information to help understand how to move with the horse at the various gaits, including sitting trot. Even with a regular trainer I find this book invaluable and have bought it for several friends as gifts. They also have appreciated the detailed yet simple to understand descriptions of the movements. I especially like the multiple drills that are offered with each movement to help learn the proper execution of the exercises.

3 out of 5 stars Not too impressed!.......2000-08-14

I found some of the information in this book to be very helpful. However, I did find her to be a bit snobbish. I also ride and train in Vienna, Austria, but I do not feel that makes me any better than any other rider in the world. It also does not give Ms. O'Connor the right to tell people to use words like "brav" when working with a horse (especially if they don't know what it means). What is important is that people are comfortable and speak with words and in tones that are comfortable for them.

Product Description

From bestselling author Sally O'Connor comes this beautiful new book of exercises designed for the progressive training of the horse, from earliest lessons through piaffe and passage. Some of the exercises are quite specific and will only be used to solve temporary problems or issues. Others are used in the progression of training and lead to even more sophisticated exercises as the horse develops strength and balance. Full color photos and clear diagrams illustrate each exercise, which along with the direct text, make seemingly complicated exercises become quite understandable.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Like having a clinician in your bookcase.......2007-07-12

I enjoyed Sally O'Connor's earlier book "Common Sense Dressage" and found this one even better. She takes common problems or training goals and gives exercises to aid the rider in achieving success. Tons of photos, clear, concise text and a range of skill levels make this book useful for both beginners and more advanced riders.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Exercises.......2007-03-13

There is no doubt this is a quality book on the subject. On the other hand, having read the author's other book Common Sense Dressage, I find that one hard to beat!
In the new book there are in-hand flexions as used by the old masters, but a little confusing to the novice (the author acknowledges there may be pitfalls and to use the exercises with great discretion). There are also exercises to be used as corrections and intended to be used for only a short time to correct. There are plenty of photographs and possibly more diagrams than in her older book. This is still a very good book, but my older one is well-loved and annotated and I have probably become very fond of that one. If you don't have a copy of the Commonsense Dressage, then buy this new book.

                  Book Description

Sketchbooks are invaluable companions for artists and an essential part of today’s textile courses, and now, at last, there’s a book that shows embroiderers and textile students how to make the most of their sketchbook practice. Through fascinating glimpses into the sketchbooks of leading textile artists, this beautifully illustrated, first-of-its-kind guide shows—from first sketches to finished pieces—how to use a sketchbook to develop ideas, record personal observations, experiment with materials, and create sketchbooks that are works of art in themselves. Sketching in museums, coloring pages, mark-making, drawing and collage, 3-D work, e-sketchbooks, and more are covered. A must-have for students, embroiderers, and textile artists of all abilities.

I was very disappointed with this book. The text was uninteresting. The examples were not how to build your sketch book, rather it was focused on completed work.

4 out of 5 stars From Yael, a French reader.......2007-03-08

Wondeful photos, original and beautiful Art, but I'm still not sure to have completely understood the exact subject of this book. And I was waiting for something else when I ordered it, but I don't regret to have bought it, and it's more Art than Craft, I think. It's very, very original and very different from most books sold. It is very "avant-garde", and has nothing to do with the traditional Art & Craft books. If you like what is different and new, this book is for you,

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any serious about their craft........2006-10-16

Sketchbooks are typically mentioned as part of a painter or sketcher's art, but they're also an invaluable tool for modern textile and embroidery artists - and finally here's a book for this audience. Leading textile artists contribute their works and techniques to a unique coverage which follows first sketches to finished works, showing textile artists how to develop ideas, record observations, use sketchbooks for rough drafts and technique experiments, and more. Creating Sketchbooks For Embroiderers and Textile Artists is a 'must' for any serious about their craft.

This book generated many ideas for my work in textile art; and allowed my own individual creative process to develop. Also, there are great visuals, particularly for mark making using "paint" or stitchery. Recommend for artists as well as serious hobbists.

Celebrated internationally as artists and gardeners, Little and Lewis open the gates to their renowned Puget Sound garden and share their personal wisdom for what informs and inspires their wild fantasia of plants, hardscape, and art. Water features, oversized and broadleaved plants, expansive use of color, zone-pushing tropicals, architectural emphasis, and elements of classicism and mystery — all combine to create a magical space. The authors describe how you too can achieve this kind of retreat for reflection in your own backyard. From practical advice on how to make a slow-drip natural fountain, to building an inexpensive Tuscan-style wall, you will be encouraged to use your imagination and take risks. Stunning photographs will inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars Great souvenir and resource for the gardens.......2002-02-02

I visited the Huntington Museum in Pasadena last July not expecting all that much but was most impressed. I particularly enjoyed the scope and variety of their botanical gardens and so bought this book to remind myself of what I'd seen and also to learn more about the background of the gardens and how they came to be.

I was disappointed in no respect. The book provides historical photographs as well as an account of how Henry Huntington both earned his wealth and used it to establish this marvelous place. It goes on to provide sumptuous photographs of all parts of the gardens, covering both what's there and how they were established. Detail on the desert section and the Japanese section (my two favorites) were particularly appreciated. My only quibble is that a chapter on the notable trees is saved for the end, rather than covering the trees along with the location they belong to. This seems rather odd but is a minor note.

All in all, this book is a splendid souvenir and resource for the gardens of Huntington.

The successful Garden Butterflies of North America is now available in a softcover edition, making the vivid color portfolio of 40 of North America's most treasured and colorful garden butterfly varieties more affordable. Each of the individual butterflies is beautifully photographed in large-format, four-color images that are accompanied by natural history vignettes of the species and information on how to attract them. Illustrated instructions on how to design and manage gardens and backyards to attract butterflies comprises the remainder of the text. Numerous charts and plans for all types of gardens, from a container garden to a full-sized formal garden, specific details on plants that attract butterflies, how-to diagrams for building a butterfly hibernating box, and water sources such as ponds, fountains, mud baths, and waterless ponds are also included. Rick Mikula is the founder of the Hole-In-Hand Butterfly Farm where he's been breeding and selling butterflies in seven greenhouses since 1980. His work has been profiled in People magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and on the Discovery Channel. In addition, Mikula serves as the butterfly habitat consultant for many universities, zoos, museums, and aviaries.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, informative book.......1999-07-29

I checked out several books from the library to complete my research on a butterfly garden for my backyard. This one book was the best, most informative, easiest instructions I found. I had a small area to work with, and 2 years later my butterfly garden is a beautiful sight to behold, and my personal treasure to work in and with. It's design follows Mr. Mikula's basic instructions, and to date we have had several different types of butterflies visit our garden. What a joy. Thank you, Mr. Mikula!!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book but misleading title.......1999-02-01

The photos are superb and the text interesting; if the title were "Common Garden Butterflies of the United States" I'd give it 5 stars. The existing title is very misleading, however. Only the most common U.S. butterflies are included and coverage of Canada is neglible.

"The third edition of Artwalks, substantially revised and updated with seven new walks, leads readers through various sections of the city, highlighting what the authors consider to be public art, whether seen outdoors or within the confines of museums and other buildings. With directions on how to get there by subway and car, plus excellent and easy-to-read maps, Artwalks has much to offer the art lover, including off-the-beaten-path suggestions like the Chinese Scholar's Garden at Snug Harbor on Staten Island ('not to be missed') and the Ukrainian Institute of America on East 79th Street. A helpful section, 'Choosing an Outing,' lists walks by subject, such as parks or flower gardens.... [R]ecommended."

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully elusive garden images.......2002-04-20

While the text essays in this book are a bit dry, the photographic reproductions are of top notch quality. Kenna's photographs are beautifully elusive, sometimes printed quite dark, yet remain salient throughout. I found myself wondering how the images looked on the contact sheets, straight, with no darkroom manipulations. This book serves as a great example of what you can do in the darkroom to bring out a more poignant image than you actually shot at the location. It should be required for anyone who works with black and white photography in the darkroom; not because you will gleen any certain tips or techiques but because you will study the final results and perhaps wonder how they were achieved.

As a photographer, this book will remain in my photo book collection and it is Kenna's strongest work to date.

                      5 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT MAGIC.......2001-02-02

I am very lucky indeed to have been able to see many of Michael Kenna's photographs at live exhibitions, both in Washington, D.C. and in New York City. Any art book is a "poor" substitution for the real thing, but there are some books that can give you true, beautiful examples of specific art works that then, hopefully, can someday be seen live. Kenna is a British photographer, in his 50's, who now lives in San Francisco....and seems to concentrate, in large part, on landscapes as his subjects. His images in this book are of the gardens created by Andre Le Notre, "the most important garden designer of the court of Louis XIV." In approximately 6o plates on 80 pages, we are taken to 10 different locations in France including the Tuileries in Paris and Versailles and Fontainebleau. The photographs are nothing short of breathtaking, obviously taken at dawn or dusk when the natural light is almost unreal. These images evoke mysterious, art movie settings---one almost expects a stranger to appear from one of the designed paths or pools or from behind one of the symmetrical trees or shrubs. All of it: the photographs, the accompanying essay, the way the book is put together with obvious care and love is magnificent magic.

                      5 out of 5 stars excellent images.......2000-10-12

A beautiful book that is full of some of Michael Kenna's finest images. Truely beautiful black and white printing. Michael Kenna is a master in his own time. Some of the fimest landscape I have ever seen. A must have for photography lovers!!

I reiterate what other parents are saying about this great book. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is because.... I hate the way the pages FEEL. I had gotten a copy out of the library and those pages are stiff, white, regular pages. The copy I ordered from Amazon came with soft brown pages that make the text harder to read. The soft pages give me the willies for some reason.

This shouldn't take away the terrific content, but I am a strange person that way...

I was looking for ideas of things to do with my almost 2 year old and came across this book. It has awesome ideas throughout it. The only problem with the book is that most of it is geared for someone a little bit older. I usually think of a toddler as beginning walker up to 3. But, it really seems to be more geared toward 2-4 yo. I am looking forward to using these ideas with my daughter as she grows.

                              4 out of 5 stars Teacher Turned Full-Time Mommy!.......2000-06-19

I orderer this book because I am currently a high school teacher with little experience with small children. I am a first time mom with a very busy two year old. Because I love planning and I understand that children of all ages need a fairly structured day, I was looking for a book that would help me better understand what a two year old would like to do and give me a daily, weekly or monthly plan to follow. The book is broken up into months and then into weeks. For instance, July has a heavy focus on our country's birth in the first week and then it moves you and your cherub to other summertime activities. The author seems to enjoy tradition, hands-on activities and themes for the entire month. She provides some good ideas and a parent can expand the ideas to suit their needs. As a teacher, I fully understand how important it is to create "lesson plans" for our children, that it's important to keep a scheduled day and that reading and singing need to be a big part of it all. Jan Brennan has reminded me of all the songs I used to sing from my childhood and she has a very extensive list of books to read to your child (I haven't checked yet, but I'm sure one could get the books at your local library or from Amazon.com!). With Brennan's help, I am looking forward to getting our day ready the night before and collecting supplies on Sunday before the week starts. My teaching days are far from over!

5 out of 5 stars Clever and fun activities for toddlers.......2000-04-15

The activities in this book for toddlers are organized chronologically by month, and then divided by week. Each month has a theme (or treasure as the author calls them). For example, January's theme is winter, for March it's music and movement, for July it's freedom, and for November, thankfulness. The weekly themes are borrowed from a nursery rhyme. There is a wonderful mix of suggested books to read, songs based on familiar melodies, recipes, and activities such as games, exercise, and plays, which both teach and entertain. We've found this a really useful and fun book.

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas but maybe a little advanced for 2's.......2000-03-29

This book is just what I was looking for! Activities are organized by every week of the year. There are seasonal activities, a short book list, recipes, songs, field trips and fingerplays. The activities are easily done with items around the house. I especially liked that the ideas were geared toward one child or a small group of children instead of a day care setting. I think the book will become even more useful next year when my toddler is a preschooler.
