The book looks at cheetahs from an evolutionary stand;it takes into account the major factors which affect the fitness of an animal. This book is a valuable educational resource for those intrested in the behavior of the cheetah. This text however is not very exciting or entertaining. I recommend that you use the book for educational purposes or you may be disappointed.

Some to knit, most to crochet.......2007-03-23
This book is Ok, it has some lovely designs, quite a lot of them are granny squares. Of the 100 patterns most of them are to crochet, 14 are to knit. There are some nice baby afghans in this book.
I like to see an illustrated basic stitch guide in these type of books so i can refresh my knowledge when completing a stitch i havent done in some time, there is not one in this book.

Afghans to KNIT and crochet???.......2006-05-23
I agree with the previous reviewer - the crocheted afghans are pretty, and if you're looking for granny-square versions, this is a wonderful source.
However, don't be misled into thinking that knit and crochet afghans are presented in anything like equal numbers, as the book's title implies. Out of 100 afghans, a mere 14 are knit. Some are innovative, and some are just the same old thing all over again.
I've read books and used patterns by Jean Leihauser and Rita Weiss before, and these seem to be up to their usual caliber.
Overall, I give the book a 2.5. While most of the afghans are pretty, and are photographed nicely, the underrepresentation of knit afghans costs the book 2.5 stars from this (primarily) knitter. I probably would have scored the book higher if I hadn't been sadly misled by the title.

Good patterns and book design.......2007-09-22
If you crochet or both knit and crochet,you should be pleased with these patterns. The majority are for crocheters and,although the designs are traditional,there are quite a variety. This book is not for people who only knit or are looking for trendy designs because there are few of either. I especially liked the categorization for patterns (e.g., "easy stripes", "timeless classics")and the spiral binding is great (wish all knit and crochet books would use it).The graphed designs are generally well done. All in all,the book is worth the price.

Despite the negative reviews, I ordered this and am not disappointed. Of the 60 afghans, less than 1/3 are for knitters but crocheters have a nice assortment. The spiral binding which lays flat is great. The book has no introduction, no learning pages and also no attributions to the designers. Five of the big yarn companies have contributed all the patterns but I've been checking their websites and haven't found any of them around. Each pattern has one page of instructions and one very pretty page in color of the afghan. I really want to knit Go graphic which begins in the center of a square and works out with M1 stitches for 5 colors altogether. Another center start square also knit is Nursery throw.Octagon afghan also knit is an interesting one being done in octagons and squares. The crochet afghans have some interesting items also: Amish blocks is very attractive as is Harlequin diamonds and Prairie star. Floral water lily is a nice one in afghan stitch with a pretty embroidery worked after. Autumnal harvest done in a variegated with yellow and cream colors also, is very bright and attractive. There are several ripple and granny afghans to choose from.
Two unusal afghans are commemoratives, one for police and one for firemen and they need duplicate stitch or embroidery added. All of the afghans appear to be quite easy to make.

and a few to knit (16 out of 60 are knit patterns). As a knitter only, the few patterns in here that are knit are uninspired, the yarn choices blah at best (it IS nice to see some low to mid range yarns, but some of the choices are horrid), and I can get most of these patterns online for free. I am mostly peeved at the large amounts of publications out there that claim to be knit AND crochet, but turn out to be mostly crochet......I'm glad I picked this up at the library and didn't waste my money

This book is a disappointment. I knit. I do not crochet. If there are 60 afghans in this book, there are probably no more than 10 or 15 for knitters. I don't know the exact number because they are not organized or identified in any way. You have to thumb through the book one by one and look for whether it calls for a needle or a hook.
The designs are uninspired. The yarns all look the same. Someone said it has a discount-store look to it, and that describes it very well. Actually, I've seen better designs at the discount store.
The one knit design I found interesting was photographed in a close-up, so you could only see about 12" of a large afghan with a big pattern repeat. Who would want to knit a 60" afghan without first seeing a picture of the whole thing?
The nice wire binding doesn't make up for what is, or is not, between the covers. "Under Cover" underperforms. There are lots of better books out there.
Pedestrian; very disappointing.......2004-10-25
I'm coming off a Trisha Malcolm high with her brilliant Vogue Crochet Scarf book. Because of that, I was felt doubly let down when I reviewed this book. I find the patterns very dull and worse, the large % of big "motif" or seasonal patterns amateurish. I read the entire book at a bookstore and found only one crochet block (a hexagon) worth note... and I was able to memorize that. I can't emphasize enough that this is a book you should see before buying. I'm sure glad I did.

Wangari Muta Maathai was born in Nyeri, Kenya in 1940. In 1960, she won a Kennedy scholarship to study in America and earned a master's degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh and became the first woman in East Africa to earn a Ph.D.
Returning to Kenya in 1966, Wangari Maathai was shocked at the degradation of the forests and the farmland caused by deforestation. Heavy rains had washed away much of the topsoil, silt was clogging the rivers, and fertilizers were depriving the soil of nutrients. Wangari decided to solve the problem by planting trees.
Under the auspices of the National Council of Women of Kenya, of which she was chairwoman from 1981 to 1987, she introduced the idea of planting trees through citizen foresters in 1976, and called this new organization the Green Belt Movement (GBM). She continued to develop GBM into broad-based, grassroots organization whose focus was women's groups planting of trees in order to conserve the environment and improve their quality of life. Through the Green Belt Movement, Wangari Maathai has assisted women in planting more than 20 million trees on their farms and on schools and church compounds in Kenya and all over East Africa.
In Africa, as in many parts of the world, women are responsible for meals and collecting firewood. Increasing deforestation has not only meant increasing desertification, but it has also meant that women have had to travel further and further afield in order to collect the firewood. This in turn has led to women spending less time around the home, tending to crops, and looking after their children. By staying closer to home, earning income from sustainably harvesting the fruit and timber from trees, women not only can be more productive, they can provide stability in the home. They can also create time for education opportunities—whether for themselves or their children.
This virtuous circle of empowerment through conservation is serving as a model throughout the world, where women both individually and collectively are entrusted with money and material to invest it in ways that make a difference to their daily lives. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement is a great example of how one person can turn around the lives of thousands, if not millions of others, by empowering others to change their situation.
Wangari's road to success was by no means easy. During the 1970s and 1980s, she came under increasing scrutiny from the government of Daniel arap Moi. She was frequently the target of vilification from the government, as well as subject to outright attacks and imprisonment. She refused to compromise her belief that the people were best trusted to look after their natural resources, as opposed to the corrupt cronies of the government, who were given whole swathes of public land, which they then despoiled.
In January 2003, Wangari Maathai was elected by an overwhelming margin to Parliament, where she is the Assistant Secretary for Environnment, Wildlife, and Natural Resources in the democratically elected Kibaki government. Even though she is now being protected by the very same soldiers who once arrested her, her voice on behalf of the environment is still strong and determined.
In The Green Belt Movement, founder Wangari Maathai tells its story: why it started, how it operates, and where it is going. She includes the philosophy behind it, its challenges and objectives, and the specific steps involved in starting a similar grassroots environmental and social justice organization. The Green Belt Movement is the inspiring story of people working at the grassroots level to improve their environment and their country. This book took me into the grassroots level work of the newest Nobel Peace Prize winner. I was glad to get a glimpse into what the world is just recognizing as the new frontier - the hope that comes from action at the local level which makes real course changes in our world as a whole. I enjoyed the very practical outline of this movement's accomplishments and connections to the growing consciousness for earth's slow, steady salvation.

I found this book to be an enlightening and educating account of the background and work of the current Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Wangari Maathai. THE GREEN BELT MOVEMENT is currently the only volume that provides as much insight on this topic.
This book aptly illustrates the practical effect a visionary can have towards the cause of unifying and balancing the degraded social, cultural and biological environment that we inhabit, by it's ample portrayal of the life, philosophy and focus of Prof. Maathai.
I highly recommend this book.

The Green Belt Movement by Wangari Maathai is a wonderful, informative and user-friendly book that gives a good sense of the movement's history and the person behind it. Just as Maathai in her work likes to keep her hands in the dirt planting trees, in her book she cuts directly to the meat and bones of what the Green Belt Movement is about and how it functions practically on the ground.
The book illustrates both the work of the Green Belt Movement and the philosophical motivations behind it, making it a useful and applicable guide to any person or organization interested or involved in a grassroots, holistic, and sustainable approach to changing the environmental and social threads of our world.
Throughout the text Maathai's directness, integrity and humor shines through, revealing the dynamic and rich personality behind this inspirational movement.
"I assumed that all people working in public service loved the people they served, were accountable and transparent, and had integrity. That was part of the culture that had been inculcated in me by my parents and teachers. It was part of my personality, character and conscience. I have since learned that such assumptions are shared by few." This statement is vital to an understanding of who Wangari Maathai is and is one of the reasons she won the Nobel Peace Prize. She has always had great integrity and she has never been willing to compromise it.
Throughout the book there are passages that let the reader know that this person who is writing is brilliant, funny and also deeply modest. Wangari Maathai is an extraordinary person and this book provides a good sense of the hard work that went into creating the Green Belt Movement. I recommend it.

Good suggestions and ideas........2002-11-29
There are a few good ideas in this books, but you have to actually want to do these things. This is a typical self help book were a lot of people think their problems can be solved just by reading it. A lot of the tips are easier said than done. Yes, it's easy to think about kissing your mate for 10 seconds, but how many times do you actually do that? Ellen Kreidman gives a lot of great examples on how to improve your relationships. But you still have to work at it yourself. Not a bad book.

Once again, Ellen delivers. I love her playful and fun approach to relationships. So many other relationship author are so serious. A ten second kiss is indeed a "little thing" but romance is all of those little things we do every day to say "I love you."

At first I thought this book must be insane, challenging people to kiss for 10 seconds, but this book truly is hard hitting, head on, thought provoking reading. I have tried it in my own life and the results are exciting, to say the least! Tips on the 10 second kiss are not the only gems in it...This book is a "must read" for anyone looking to keep their relationship full of spark!

This is a wonderful, touching and inspirational book that made me laugh and cry. She saves the best for last and her last chapter called "The 24 hour Day," has completely changed the way I live my life. If you want to be motivated to make changes in your life and relationship, read her last chapter and Conclusion first. She gives you a sense of power over your own life and the choices you make. It made me see the light and I will never forget her message. Whenever I am down, I reread that chapter and feel so lucky to be alive. Ms. Kreidman doesn't give you a lot of sychobabble like all the others I've read. She talks from the heart and not from the head. She makes having a great relationship so simple. For a few dollars her book did what thousands of dollars and years of therapy couldn't do. Our communication and sex life is better than ever. If every couple read this book, marriage counselors would be out of business.

Ellen really has her crap together about her life and going through her personal trials like dealing with cancer....MORE THAN ONCE. And she has some good, practical and effective ideas about relationships that make you think "Hey! That's so stupidly simple! Why haven't I thought of that?". THAT'S why I love her book...Now, why do I hate the book? The majority of text in her book was nothing more than unbearably brazen upsells to order MORE of her "relationship aid" materials/programs or to attend her seminars...(for starters, there was an ORDER FORM in the back of the book). It almost made you feel as if you were'nt getting the COMPLETE experience unless you DID....The book in itself SHOULD be enough...With all her advertising material WITHIN her OWN material, it feels a billboard is put in front of my face, preventing me from continuing what I'm reading...reminds me when I surf the net and have to deal with pop-up ads and windows that prevent me from continuing on my way....She strokes herself more than the average hormonally-driven teenager. And that's why it's collecting dust on my bookshelf to this very day...on my shelf UNFINISHED I might add....
