This is a fantastic resource book and the CD makes everything so easy! I have wanted to have clip art for my collages and cards and I was thrilled with the variety of clip art available--nearly everything works! I ordered a larger, hard-bound book in addition to this book, but I found more of the clip art here more usable and classic than in the more expensive, hardbound version. I have been looking for something like this forever and was pleased to find it and find it at such a great price!

              5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!.......2004-08-21

For those of you in Washington or Oregon, or even if you plan on traveling to the Northwest, this book is a must-have. It lists farmer's markets, organic stores, and all the restaurants that are vegan/vegetarian or have good vegetarian menus. Not only that, but it has several articles in the back about general vegetarian health and can be used as a quick reference guide for on the road. I highly reccommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A useful guide for exploring the veg-friendly Pacific NW.......2004-02-22

Veg-Feasting in the Pacific Northwest does an great job bringing all of Washington's and Oregon's vegetarian/vegan/veg-friendly establishments in one book. It is divided into 3 sections: Dining (restaurant reviews/listings), Shopping (natural food stores and farmers market listings), and Living (articles about nutrition and other topics relating to a vegetarian diet). I'll break down my review to each of these 3 sections...

Dining Section: I have lived in Seattle my entire life and therefore I thought I knew of practically every vegetarian and veg-friendly restaurant in the area -- nonetheless I found plenty of new restaurants I am now looking forward to trying! And when I'm getting hungry during my next road trip, it will be nice to know where the veg-friendly places are when I pass through unfamiliar cities. While they did overlook a few of my favorite veg-friendly restaurants in Seattle, they do ask for feedback to make future editions even more comprehensive -- so I'm not going to penalize the book a star for that.

Shopping Section: While I have long known all of the the natural food stores close to my house, new vegetarians will certainly find the listings useful to find the stores closest to where they live. Like the Dining section, this section will be especially handy when I'm travelling through or visiting unfamiliar cities. Including the region's farmers markets along with the natural food stores is a nice idea as well.

Living Section: While the articles in this section are interesting and well-researched, many long-time vegetarians/vegans (like myself) will already be aware of the nutritional, environmental, ethical, etc., aspects of eating a more plant-based diet. But beginning and aspiring vegetarians should find this section extremely useful, as it covers all of the usual concerns and questions people have about how and why to eat a vegetarian diet.

              Summary:
Strongly recommended for anyone interested in fully exploring Washington and Oregon's many vegetarian-friendly, vegetarian, and vegan establishments.
Experienced vegetarians/vegans living in (or visiting) Washington or Oregon should own this book solely for the comprehensive restaurant and store listings.
For new or aspiring vegetarians living in WA/OR, this book is a must-have -- it contains all of the basic information they'll need to start exploring vegetarianism. (I wish this book existed when I first became a vegetarian!)

4 out of 5 stars Good start for NW rose beginners.......2005-09-20

This is the book I recomend to people who live in the Northwest and want to learn about roses. There are many great rose books out there, many more informative and with more pictures... but for folks who are just starting out too much information can be confusing and frustrating.

This is a great book for people that want to try to grow roses, but are intimidated by the selection at the local nurseries. Or for people who have tried to grow roses before, and have been disapointed with the results. The roses listed arn't the ONLY roses that will grow here by any means, but it acts like a cheat sheet, naming varieties that are likely to do well here regardless of the experience of the gardener.

I especially like that they encourage people to try old garden roses and Rugosas, which are sometimes snubbed in other begining rose books in favor of Hybrid teas.

For the beauty of the pictures and many varieties, I would encourage rose lovers to also purchase Random House Book of Roses by Roger Phillips. The color photographs look so real you swear you can smell them!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful guide for planning trips for kids or adults.......2001-08-25

This "ultimate guide for traveling in the Pacific Northwest with kids" covers Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. Each state/province is subdivided into metropolitan areas and geographical regions. Then each area or town has listings for places to stay, places to eat and things to see and do. While this volume is *not* exhaustive in terms of EVERYTHING you could see or do, it certainly covers the highlights of things you would enjoy seeing and doing with your children. We recently planned a trip to Oregon with a teenager using this guide as one of many resources. We were not disappointed, and as a matter of fact, we weren't able to cover everything suggested in this book in the time we had available. I would suggest that these guides for going places with children work just as well for adults who want to glean the highlights of locations they'll be visiting in the Pacific Northwest. Since we were traveling with a tent trailer, we did not make use of the "places to stay" feature, however in glancing through them, some seem to be a bit on the pricey side. Also, we discovered a great hamburger restaurant in Bend, Oregon (called "Pilot Butte") that was not listed in this guide. So, like I said, "Going Places" is not exhaustive, but it certainly is helpful.

                  Book Description

Jackson & Perkins is the leading brand of roses in America. Through years of development, Jackson & Perkins now offers roses that have characteristics that allow gardeners to enjoy roses without all the maintenance requirements.

Jackson & Perkins Beautiful Roses Made Easy is available in regional editions and explains how roses can now be easy to grow and enjoy in any part of the country.

Some gardeners have avoided roses assuming that they were too tricky, fussy, and difficult to grow. This book will help gardeners identify the roses that are easy to grow in their region of the country, and also give tips on how to care for and maintain them.

Through six regional editions, Jackson & Perkins Beautiful Roses Made Easy explains how breeding and testing provide modern-day roses that are much easier to grow, with better results.

Regional editions give readers specific information on growing conditions in their area and the best roses for those conditions.

I had high hopes for this book, as I've been looking for a book with a good, up-to-date list of rose recommendations for the Pacific Northwest area. However, it didn't really fit my needs. There are two sections of recommended roses; the first, and by far the larger, is heavily weighted toward modern roses and appears not to be specific to this region. The list of Ciscoe's favorites is region specific and includes more roses of classes other than hybrid teas, grandifloras, and floribundas, but it's short: only 33 roses are listed.

If you're new to growing roses in the Pacific Northwest, this is probably a good book to get; it does have useful information on growing roses, landscaping with roses, and many nice pictures (though some are annoyingly unlabeled). However, given the lack of sufficient region-specific recommendations, I'd stick with Rayford Clayton Reddell's _The Rose Bible_ for general rose recommendations and growing advice and Jeff Cox's _Landscape with Roses_ for landscaping and design suggestions.

                    Book Description

Sooner or later every gardener comes around to roses. Of all flowers in all the gardens of the world, roses seem to exercise the greatest powers of attraction while at the same time generating the greatest apprehension and fear of failure. Let Christine Allen guide you as you choose your roses and care for your rose garden. Christine Allen is a writer and gardener. She joined the Vancouver Rose Society in 1987 and was its president in 1997 and 1998. She teaches courses on rose care and cultivation at Van Dusen Garden in Vancouver, where she also works as a volunteer. Christine lives on a farm in Langley, British Columbia, and grows over 200 roses, among herbs and perennials in her large country garden. Chapters include: Choosing a Rose; Suitable Roses for our climate; Preparing and designing the site; Amending your soil; Care and cultivation; Year round maintenance; Pruning; All-important pest control.

While the pictures are terrible, the information is provided in a very straight-forward manner, with good, but not overly romantic descriptions of the various roses. I'm a newcomer to roses, and I've been frustrated by the tendency of most writers to describe every rose in very general terms. I've grown weary of reading: "One of the best of it's class." Allen does none of this; moreover, she is up front about what probably won't work well. Bourbons, she says, are likely to ball and be a disappointment in the rainy parts of the PNW. Now, for someone like me, just getting started, that's very useful information I have not seen elsewhere.

I'm withholding one star because of the pictures. It's just a guess, but I think the printer, not the photographer is to blame for the poor quality

4 out of 5 stars a very good book on roses for the PNW.......2004-05-27

This is an excellent reference book for growing roses in this region, including specific rose recommendations. I wish there were a new edition, as this one is about 5 years old and therefore doesn't include any newer roses (and has a fairly small section on David Austin's English roses). Don't buy it for the photographs, though, which are almost all dreadful - terribly underexposed, and the colors of the roses are completely off (for instance, Fragrant Cloud, which is a bright orange-red, looks almost purple in this book's photograph).

The Chronic Pain Control Workbook is by far the best of its kind. It truly will walk a chronic pain sufferer through a step-by-step program that, if followed consistently, WILL improve the quality of the chronic sufferer's life. I have used it successfully with thousands of patients. HOWEVER, the book is now out-of-print (for some unfathomable reason that nether the publisher nor the authors care to explain) and I am seeing extreme price gouging! Don't fall for it and do not pay exorbitant prices for a book that's listed at $17.95. If you can't find a used one for a reasonable price, "The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook (2000, 5th edition, also by New Harbinger Publications) by M. Davis, Elizabeth Eshelman, and Matthew McKay - ISBN: 1572242140 covers almost all the topics just as well as the Pain Control Workbook does. What's missing are the chapters on medications, theories of pain, and vocational issues, but these are covered quite well elsewhere. The Relax workbook is available for list price of $19.95, but I have seen it used for as little as $10. A MUCH saner way to go!

Unfortunately, I learned almost all the stuff in this book the hard way: through countless doctors, practioners, classes, friends, internet postings and searches, medical journals and books, library visits, etc. The information is pretty current and will give you a very good, balanced view of treating chronic pain, this most mysterious and frustrating of all modern ailments. It provides a wide variety of topics, including how to cope with the emotional stress that accompanies the pain. In an ocean of methods, information, and misinformation, this book is a convenient little tug boat to guide you through the harbor.

My heart goes out to anyone having to deal with chronic pain and it's insidious misdiagnsosis and mistreatment by the leading medical establishment. This book should help you battle against the big dogs and fight your way through the influx of information, and hopefully find you some relief.
