Book Description
These stunning quilts from award-winning designer J. Michelle Watts were inspired by the timeless motifs of the American Southwest. The influences of culture, landscape, color, and design come together to play a key role in the creation of this imaginative collection of quilt designs. Concise instructions and abundant step-by-step illustrations make the projects easy for everyone to follow. The intricate and seemingly complicated pieced designs require only one or two very simple and familiar piecing techniques. The appliqu designs can be made with the popular quick-fusing technique. The book features pieced and appliqud projects. Many of the designs are presented in different sizes and colorways. Quilters can choose between the rich and subtle color schemes of the desert landscape and alternative schemes in bright, vibrant colors. The quilts are accompanied by sumptuous photographs of the traditional and contemporary pottery, jewelry, and woven textiles that inspired the designs. The featured project, Midnight in Santa Fe, is a medallion-style quilt. It is actually five projects in one, depending on how many of the borders are included in the finished quilt.

Quilts of the Southwest.......2007-02-12
I found the book to be extremely easy. I consider myself still a beginner and had no trouble following the instructions. The author gave great sources since on the east coast it is impossible to find southwestern style fabrics. I could not wait to get started.
Awesome book!!!!!!!!!!!
Great instructions!.......2006-05-12
This book has concise and easy to follow, step by step cutting instructions, something I enjoy. J. Michelle is known for her uncomplicated directions to complicated patterns whether teaching classes or in her books. This book is no exception. I made the Eye Dazzler pattern in this book and found it went smoothly from start to finish. I was amazed at how fast it went together! The variety of patterns will give you plenty of options to choose from. I also enjoyed reading how she discovered patterns for her quilts and the pictures of her inspirations.
Book Description
Complete and detailed instructions and illustrations for creating your own Southwest Indian quilts. Has quick sewing tips, choosing fabrics and even how to construct a quilting frame.
Customer Reviews:
A Huge Disappointment.......2004-09-01
If you are a quilter looking for applique patterns, please, do not waste your money on this book. The "patterns" are nothing more than clip art type pictures that the author admits she got from coloring books. The user is expected to copy and enlarge an 8" picture until it is usable for a 40" piece and then seperate the picture into usable parts. Some pictures are too detailed for applique and she tells you they must be simplified. A large portion of the book is general quilting information that only a beginner would find useful.
Book Description
Historically, the Southwest has attracted people with yearnings for freedom and adventure, people who define themselves as individuals. Unlike their husbands and brothers, women in the Southwest did not, for the most part, subdue and tame the land; but their character and individuality were manifested as they lived with and improved upon conditions as they found them. Their fascination with their way of life and the need for self-expression led them to write of their experiences, providing them with a creative outlet and offering those who came later a unique window into the past.
"A Quilt of Words" won the Border Regional Library Association 1989 Southwest Book Award for literary excellence and enrichment of the cultural heritage of the Southwest. It was also awarded the National Federation of Press Women first prize for history in 1989.
Customer Reviews:
Barely kept my interest.......2006-08-04
I was a little dissapointed in the formatting of the book - it provides narrative for each individual before their 'autobiographical' entry. Perhaps you would enjoy that but I was hoping to read strict diary entries. I must admit I got bored with it and started skipping the narratives. I never finished it.
Very good ~ Very interesting view of Southwest History .......2005-03-19
This book was/is very good~ very interesting. Its a good perspective from a woman's point of view ~ I enjoyed the book.
It is filled with lots of pictures to go along with the text.
Good book~ Not sure what the other reviewer was raving about but this is a fine book.
Pop History.......2004-05-11
A Quilt of Words: Womens Diaries, Letters, and Original Accounts of Life in the Southwest, 1860-1960 by Sharon Niederman is nothing more than a quick fix research project riddled with mediocre scholarship. The book is worth the price only for the primary sources and accounts. Shame on you Ms. Niederman for robbing the graves of America's pioneer women. If you insist on calling your work history, perhaps you should invest some time learning the craft!

Good for reference but not for patterns........2004-01-14
Given the relative dearth of quilting books featuring patterns inspired by Native American and Mexican art, I was anxious to buy this book. After going through it, however, I would classify it more as an "appetite-whetter" than a pattern book. It is a terrific starting place for a more experienced quilter who can adapt the author's dated instructions to current techniques such as rotary cutting and strip piecing and who can incorporate multiple design elements into one piece. Standing alone, the pieces presented by the author are simplistic to the point of being crude. Nonetheless, I enjoy this book and am happy to have it as part of my reference collection.
A mix of surprise, creativity and dissapointment..........2000-12-16
Although published in '91 the quilts and techniques in this book are reminiscent of the '70s. Ms. Olsen does a great job of researching Native American designs. Her interpretation and execution of the quilts, however, is a little dissapointing. Her quilts are very simplistic and, in the case of her CHEMEHUEVI CRIB QUILT, entirely misses the design elements. Most of the quilts are pictured draped instead of full view. These quilts could easily be done with the strip piecing technique but Ms. Olsen gives directions for individual patchwork pieces instead. The book does however, have wonderful patterns which are easily adapted to modern techniques and fabrics. Overall, I enjoy the book and look forward to using her authentic designs.

Loved the book. The patterns are very southwestern and very well done. Would love to have more of her books. But cant find any. The patterns are very helpful in making up my own patterns and the colors she uses are bold and very well put together.

Product Description
For more than a decade, Marcia Kaylakie traveled Texas from the Panhandle to Big Bend country, from the Piney Woods to the Gulf, discovering thousands of quilts in towns from Alpine to Austin, Dimmitt to Dallas, and myriad other Texas communities large and small. Hidden away in closets, trunks, and attics, the quilts Kaylakie found are not only heirlooms but also, owing to their histories, irreplaceable emblems of Texas heritage.
This book showcases thirty-four quilts. Through them and their stories, the cultural development of the state unfolds. Most will never be exhibited or appear in any other permanent record. All Texas-made, they span the state geographically and range from the 1870s to the turn of the twenty-first century. As examples of what Texas quilting was and is as craft--and as cultural narrative--these quilts preserve a unique and compelling aspect of Texas history.

Book Description
When predicting the effects of changing climate and carbon dioxide on plants at the global scale there is a major stumbling block--we have very little information, in many cases none, about how plants will respond in the future. In order to circumvent this problem, and until more information on species accumulates, we reduce the diversity of species to a diversity of functions and structures. The structures may be trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses. The functions may be types of photosynthetic processes, the capacity to minimize water loss and varying the timing of growth. This book describes approaches and methods for defining these functional types in ways that maximize our potential to predict accurately the responses of real vegetation with real species diversity. This book will be useful to those interested in botany, ecology, and environmental science.

Book Description
The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the most important pulse crop in Latin America, as well as in large parts of Asia and Africa. It is particularly important due to its ability, in symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, to fix atmospheric nitrogen and due to its high nutrient value. Incorporating contributions from plant breeders, microbiologists, plant physiologists and soil scientists, this volume reports the results of an FAO/IAEA Coordinated Research Programme (1985--1991), whose main objective was to enhance yield and biological nitrogen fixation in common bean by reducing its reliance on soil and fertilizer nitrogen. The volume will be invaluable to scientists working on biological nitrogen fixation and legume production.

Book Description
This major new book presents a collection of essays by leading authorities who address the current state of knowledge. The chapters bring together the early results of an international scientific research program designed to address what will happen to our ability to produce food and fiber, and what effects there will be on biological diversity under rapid environmental change. This book addresses how these changes to terrestrial ecosystems will feed back to further environmental change. International in scope, this state-of-the-art assessment will interest policymakers, students and scientists interested in global change, climate change and biodiversity. Special features include descriptions of a dynamic global vegetation model, developing generic crop models and a special section on the emerging discipline of global ecology.

Better guides are out there.......2006-02-04
I am so glad I dodn't actually fork over the money for this book! I, too, found it at the library. And back it will go tomorrow!
If this is the first book you have ever read on how to discpline your children, perhaps the discpline techniques he advocates would seem wonderful or miraculous. If you have no idea what to do with your kids, and your parents' example didin't inspire you, maybe this book is a good starting point. But personally I found it over-simplified in its concepts, and too wordy on the wrong subjects. For example, he claims that star charts as a rewards mechanism always work. There is, however, quite a bit of evidence that they don't actually work well in the long run; that it is far better to get your child to want to do a certain behaviour, rather than just do it to get a little star (or whatever the reward is). He cites animal training techniques for inspiration. Having experience with dolphin training in particular, I have to tell you that the dolphins get lazy if you reward good behavior every single time they do it. The trick, I was told, is not so much in getting the dolphin to do the behaviour. The trick is to get them to WANT to do the behaviour. And we are talking about children here, not animals. Kids are often capable of a lot more than we gie them credit for, unlike most animals I've worked with. The author also simplistically tells the reader that positive reinforcement always works. I am not in any way advocating negative reinforcement, and this is perhaps one of the few points on which we agree. But I feel that making a statement like that is just too cut and dry. Is there anything in this world that ALWAYS works?
Furthermore, I found each of the age-related sections of this book way too airy. The section on 4-8 year olds had almost nothing to say at all. Since I have a 4 1/2 year old, and another one on the way, I was thoroughly disappointed! I wanted to know about physiological changes that occur during the age ranges he mentions, as well as emotional adjustments they are starting to make. These sections were woefully inadequate. I also wanted real-life examples of how his techniques have specifically worked for families. But perhaps this was my fault. I was too bored (to tears)to read any further, and may have missed a story or two in there, somehwere.
For a far better, more concise, more practical and much more pleasureable read, try Michael Green's "Beyond Toddlerdom", the follow-up book to "Toddler Taming". His common sense, good humour, and down-to-earth style make for inspiring as well as practical reading.
Funnily enough, the best books I have read on parenting aren't actually about parenting at all. Get your hands on anything by John Holt (especially "How Children Learn" and "How Children Fail") for a far better insight into what motivates children at what age. It's all very well to have a few tricks in the bag on how to punish children, but it means nothing unless you try to understand why they do what they do first. Holt's in depth observations of kids' behaviour opened up a world of insight into children for me in a way that no book specifically dedicated to parenting ever has. Holt's books are especially useful if you have problems in relation to your child's schooling and susequent behavior at home.
Hopefully you don't accept the first quote you get when you need to get something fixed, right? In my opinon, the same goes for raising children. Keep in mind that it may be in your and your child's best interests to check out other opinions on discpline apart from this guy's.
Unbelievable!.......2005-11-22
I got this book at the library. After being frustrated with some behaviors, I read it in depth. What a wonderful book! I immediately implemented many strategies and found reamrkable results! The book is also a handy refrence guide for future problems and a great reminder of what to do during many stages of a child's development! Awesome buy!
Good practical advice.......2005-02-13
I owned Positive Discipline for Teenagers before I bought this book. Though that is a good book, it was somewhat philosophical. I wanted specifics. The Everything Parent's Guide to Positive Discipline gave me some good pragmatic advice. It's well organized with a good table of contents and index. I was quickly able to find the author's opinion on whether or not I was on track with a punishment I'd given. His perspective made sense. Highly recommended.
The Best Book I have found - Absolutely Outstanding!.......2005-01-07
I'm so surprised this book has not been rated by other folks. This book is so good, it should be required reading. It has REAL advice for how you should be diciplining your children in no uncertain terms. This book is great for people who have kids from 1 to 21!!! It has GREAT advice for parents of tweens and teenagers. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old and I just wanted to make sure I was starting off on the right foot. I was relieved when it didn't have a bunch of artifical advice for children under 3. It explains how you should be interacting with your children overall. I also liked information about anger and how to handle yourself. This book is seriously great - read it!!!
