If You Love Bouviers..........2006-02-15
If you love Bouviers, you will love this book. It is worth every penny! Great history, photos, and packed all the information you need as a potential Bouvier owner or as an admirer of the breed. Pedigrees, puppy selection, grooming... it's all there. A must have if you plan to own a Bouvier. I keep mine on my bedside table... when I'm not carrying it around with me. (Yup, it's heavy.) This is the best Bouvier book I've ever found and definitely the most thorough.
Detailed history of breed, special emphasis on police work.......1999-01-15
As a new and first time owner of a Bouvier des Flandres puppy, I appreciated many of the details, historical, raising and breeding. The book emphasizes the Bouvier as a Schultzhund dog, which is the author's perogative. I would have appreciated more information on training of a Bouvier for a pet. Many dog owners desire a lovable pet not a champion police dog. The author is an important breeder of Bouviers and he has many valid points to keep the Bouviers to a standard. I myself researched breeders for several months as it is a problem. My summary statement is that the book is worth the money. If there is a revision, I hope the author will broaden his interests in the breed for the general dog owner.
The Bouvier book everyone should read.......1998-12-09
A most informative easy to read book, giving accurate detail and information about the Bouvier des Flandres.
Engle accurately portrays the breed in easy to read text........1998-03-04
Engle does an excellant job of portraying Bouviers as the working family dog they really are. All Bouvier owners should read this book. Kathleen Ryan
This is it! The book that does the breed justice!.......1996-08-02
If you are a Bouvier des Flandres fancier or just think that
you would like to know more about the breed, buy this book!
History, bloodlines, showing, training and grooming are all
covered in detail.
Best of all, this book does what we wish all breed books
did. It gives us an HONEST picture of a noble breed without
the sugar-coated praise that makes too many people buy the
wrong dog. Read this book and you won't go wrong when you
look into Bouviers.

This is a nice book. Especially, when you are still in the "research phase" of finding out if a Bouvier is the dog for you. We currently live in The Netherlands and took this book to our new puppies breeder and he also thought it was "a very good book." This book is easy to read and has nice heavy pages. A very good beginner book with everything you need in it, from history to fleas!

BOUVIER DES FLANDRES BY CLAIRE MCLEAN.......2000-04-15
My husband and I own a 4 yr old Bouvier named Gibson and are avid "Bouv" people. This book was recommended as one of the books to read before acquiring a Bouv. It has excellent history and standards for both the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs if you choose to show. Some of the pictures of the breed are from the early 1900's are rare and wonderful to see. Since the breed was almost wiped out by the Nazis, most records and pictures destroyed, these pictures are rare and beautiful.
It is a good book for the new Bouv owner or someone who is thinking of buying one. The Bouvier is not a dog for everyone. They have a tendancy to be very stubborn and mature mentally at about the age of 3, so they require lots of love, patience, and positive reinforcement. They are "thinkers" and are often decribed as smarter than their owners. They will keep you young and thinking on your feet. The descriptions in this book are very true to form. Great book all around! If you are researching lineage, there is quite a bit of info in this book. Try it, You'll like it.

Not so good.......2007-09-01
I wanted to like this book. It started out good. As I read on, I started to get bored. Borrow it from a library if you can. Save your money.
Not as good as I expected.......2007-01-21
Reading some of the reviews for this book led me to believe that this book would be a good read. I was wrong.
One of my biggest pet peeves is authors who ignore good grammar and proper punctuation, and Joyce Carol Oates is one of those authors. This novel reads like it was written by a kid in junior high. All the switching between first and third person narrative left me confused. The book is written from the perspective of the adult Maddie, but tends to read like someone observing the girls of Foxfire from afar, rather than a member of the girl gang telling how things were.
The characters, with the exception of Legs, get very little development and come across as one-dimensional. As the narrator, Maddie should have gotten more character development, but instead, she is used as little more than the voice of and for Foxfire.
The concept of a girl gang like Foxfire in the 1950's is ridiculous. This book would have been more believable had it been set in a different time frame.
If you've seen the movie, stick with the movie. At least the idea of a girl gang in the 1990's isn't so far-fetched.
it gets 1 star for the cover of the book, which I liked.......2006-08-02
This book was so horrible. It was given to me by one of my friends for Christmas. I'm so glad I didn't actually part with legal tender for this putrid novel. I forced myself through the book, not caring what happened to any of the characters who were flat and boring. It was the biggest waste of time (like something you'd read in a WGS class). And why is it that the only story I ever come across in anthologies by this woman is "where are you going, where have you been"? Is this her best story? How pathetic...
Not a fan of Oates.......2006-01-10
I have tried to read the work of this amazing writer and more often than not find myself closing the book completely uninterested in the characters and/or the story. Technically, I can appreciate and even admit to the awe she inspires. But for some reason her writing leaves me cold.
This was only the second of her books which I managed to finish and I genuinely enjoyed this novel very much. The narrator is flawed and vulnerable, tough and offensive, and I wanted to know what would happen to her and to her gang.
I like this book. I will continue to try to read Oates whenever the impulse presents itself. But I will also forgive myself if I am unwilling to finish what I start.
Joyce Carol Oates wrote this as Rosamund Smith!.......2005-12-18
Sometimes you see this book by Rosamund Smith, which is Joyce Carol Oates by another name!

Customer Reviews:
a funny and inspiring read.......2006-03-07
I'm so glad I bought this book! I enjoyed reading it so much that I had trouble putting it down, even when my 17 month old wanted something! And the most amazing aspect of this book was the follow-up! Each story has a follow-up question and answer between the writer and the editor and it is fascinating to read! As a new parent, I really valued the stories involving children, especially since they tended to look at the humorous side of parenting issues. But I also loved the stories that took me out of my own day to day with baby and helped me to remember how life used to be. Thoughtful, creative, and engaging, there is a story for everyone in this book.
Marta's Opinion.......2006-02-23
The title enticed me to buy this book, but the actual scripts from various women didn't impart as much wisdom as I'd hoped. At times it was difficult to know why they bothered to tell their story... it obviously had meanings that were significant for the participant/writer but left the reader bored and wondering why it was shared.
An impressive selection of voices.......2006-01-28
I was really impressed with the diversity of the women's voices. The stories were all so different, yet I could connect to each of the women's experiences. I also appreciated how there seemed to be such a positive or hopeful spin in each of the endings. I would definitely go back to reread some of my favorites in the future.
Happy Reading!.......2005-11-19
I loved this collection of amazing stories of strong, powerful and often funny women working through life's ups and downs. My husband confessed that he's been reading it on the sly! I highly recommend it! Great gift idea.
Great Curling Up to Read by the Fire Book.......2005-10-21
Very real stories of true women's experiences with men, with love, with loss, with overcoming. I laughed, I cried, I had some ah-ha moments, and I hated for the book to end.
