Customer Reviews:
A Real Piece O Cake.......2007-06-26
I have been taking classes at my local quilt shop to learn hand applique and this is the one book that my teacher highly recommended to buy as a reference tool. It is absolutely wonderful and makes needle-turn applique a "Piece O Cake"
The New Applique Sampler: Learn to Applique the Piece O'Cake Way.......2007-05-13
I love, love, love this book! It has wonderful instructions and terrific pictures to help you all along the way. I'm excited that I'm scheduled to take a class from Linds Jenkins who will be visiting my Quilt Guild in a couple of weeks. Now I will be able to follow along with this wonderful book. I really enjoy doing applique and hope to really master it with the help of Linda and her book
Best Book for Applique I've seen.......2007-03-09
This is a great reference for beginning applique. It was recommended by a cousin of mine who owns a quilt shop. There are lots of details and pictures along with great tips that take the fear out of teaching yourself to applique. It's cheaper than a class, and a reference for life.
Great applique.......2006-08-16
Contains great instructions and patterns for modern applique. I love the printed patterns in the back of the book which eliminates trying to enlarge them for use as in some publications. Good book all around and I highly recommend it.
How to become a hand applique expert.......2006-03-19

Becky Goldsmith & Linda Jenkins' NEW APPLIQUE SAMPLER: LEARN TO APPLIQUE THE PIECE O'CAKE WAY tells how to become a hand applique expert, whether you're right-handed or left- handed. Beginners and those with some applique background will find the instructions easy - and packed with secrets of how to combine pieces, applique effectively, and choose designs.

Lynne Edwards New Sampler Quilt Book.......2007-02-08
I have joined a Quilting Club a few miles from the village, and have a lovely day working with a group of like-minded people. Most of them are far more experienced than I, but this new hobby has absorbed me. The Tutor is using Lynne Edwards' book as the basis of the course she is offering. I started off with small projects, but now I feel ready to tackle the Sampler Quilt. I have read the book and drooled over the pictures of Samplers and can't wait to start at the next session. Lynne Edwards explains everything so clearly and carefully, and her tips on achieving a good finish are excellent. My copy was offered as "As New" and it is in pristine condition. I was very pleased with my purchase, particularly as it had a hard cover.
One very satisfied customer!
A Nice Reference Book.......2007-01-30
This book has clear instructions and good illustrations. Each block is well photographed so that the detail of piecing and quilting can be easily seen. The completed sampler quilt is shown in 20 different colour/fabric combinations which is really great for those who may have trouble visualising how colours will look together. Different piecing methods are used for each block but I believe that all could be completed in whichever method you prefer if the basics of piecing are understood. Included in the book is the usual "How To" section on tools required, choosing fabric, preparation, cutting, marking, batting, quilting, finishing etc, etc. These points are not laboured as there are plenty of other reference books around which cover much the same information. A nice book for beginners and experienced quilters alike.
Should be a part of every quilters book collection.......2006-05-03
I had received a copy of Lynne Edwards first sampler quilt book and was inspired to make a sampler quilt for the friend who gave me the book. When I decided to make another sampler quilt,I was looking for some new ideas and was delighted to see that Ms. Edwards had put out another sampler quilt book, the "New Sampler Quilt Book". I was even more delighted when the book arrived and I began work on my sampler patchwork. The blocks are a little more intricate in the new book but do not require extensive sewing experience. Ms. Edwards has a very clear style of writing and explaining the "how to" part of each patchwork piece. There is a chapter devoted to each sampler piece covered in the book, as well as chapters that cover some basic fabric cutting and quilt finishing techniques. Because of Ms. Edwards clear explanations and obvious sewing skills, these extra chapters are worthy reading.
The sampler piece chapters open with a beautiful color picture of the sampler patch, an interesting short history of the patch, and then leads into construction methods that include clear diagrams of the piecing methods. This book is a "must" for every quilter's library because the patchwork construction methods are not limited to one style of piecing; the methods used include hand and machine foundation piecing as well as freezer paper applique, which gives the reader a chance to practice different techniques following clear, concise, instructions.
Another wonderful feature of Ms. Edward's books are the pictures of completed sampler quilts of other quilters who took a class with Ms. Edwards for the purpose of completing a sampler quilt. Both books follow this format, which allows the reader to see how the patchwork looks in different color schemes and with different borders.
I have purchased other patchwork collections; however, these are merely outlines of the patches and pieces used. Ms. Edwards expertise in reviewing pieceword construction methods make her books well worth purchasing.
Great book for all levels of quilting.......2003-06-03
There are several things that sets this book apart from other quilt sampler books. First, and most important is that the instructions for each block are provided individually, as opposed to general instructions provided in the front section of the book. The instructions are quite detailed, clear, precise and specific to each block. It is the next best thing to having an instructor in the room with you. Second, there are many variations of the quilts and blocks provided throughout the book, one more beautiful than the next. Third, the actual blocks are quite interesting and would be appropriate for any level of quilter. I believe that the novice and experienced quilter will benefit from and enjoy this book equally. Personally, I am a much better quilter for having used this book.
Amazon.com
In a completely updated version of her 1977 classic, Diana Leone (owner of The Quilting Bee store in Northern California), takes readers--clearly and thoroughly--through every step of quilt-making. Leone's comprehensive approach begins with a roundup of supplies, a fabric selection guide, and all the other details of getting started, then moves on to piecing and appliqué. Next come finishing, assembling, and quilting instructions. Sampler lessons provide details and diagrams for 36 different quilt blocks, arranged alphabetically and keyed with a system of one to four thimbles to indicate ease or difficulty. A beginner or intermediate quilter couldn't ask for a better guide to the basics.

The New Sampler quilt is an exelent and motivating book. It is good for beginners and intermediates alike. It has bright colorful pictures as well as clear and concise directions. The book also includes already drawn pieces for 12" blocks. This book gave me many new ideas.

Customer Reviews:
When is a bear paw not?.......2002-12-07
This book is narrowly focused on a technique for quilt-making based on variations of the popular bear's paw block. The idea grew out of teaching experiences at a quilt camp, and involves replacing the traditional center or "paw pad" of this block with a simple sampler block, like the nine-patch or the shoofly. The effect can be quite dramatic and beautiful, as well as being a lot of fun. The book contains instructions for making the sampler blocks as well as general information on rotary cutting, borders, and binding. Full color with lots of example quilts.

Book Description
Anyone who has seen Curtis Aikens in action will attest to his infectious enthusiasm and warmth. These same traits are captured in Curtis Cooks with Heart & Soul, a new book that will appeal to the millions of health-conscious cooks looking for more meatless dishes -- and lots of enticing flavors.
Many of the dishes have a down-home flair, but his imaginative use of greens and pasta reflects a passion for the fresh flavors of California-style cooking. In wonderfully fragrant and soul-satisfying dishes, such as Creamy Artichoke Pasta, Asparagus with Sun-dried Tomatoes over Pasta, and Peppers and Pasta, Curtis combines America's favorite comfort food with appealing vegetables and fresh herbs. Other hearty dishes include Pumpkin Soup, Wild Mushroom Chowder, Eggplant Enchiladas, and Apple-Squash Casserole. Lighter, vegetable-based fare includes easy-to-prepare stir-fries, curries, and rolls.
Curtis's knowledge and passion for produce are reflected in surprising, palate-pleasing improvisations, such as Lime Soup, Pizza Primavera, Vegetable Paella, and Swiss Chard Quiche. Healthier twists on Southern favorites, such as Red Beans and Rice and Black-eyed Peas, explode with flavor while skimping on fat. For other good, old-time flavors, Curtis includes staples from his childhood in Georgia: Hush Puppies, Biscuits, Stewed Okra and Tomatoes, Mama's Potato Salad, and Mama's Cabbage. And there's even more to Curtis's brand of eclectic, meatless fare-salads, chilis, stews, dressings, gravies, salsas, sauces, dips, and side dishes! Plus dessert. Curtis's repertoire ranges from traditional Southern specialties, such as Mud Pie and Benne Wafers, to family favorites, such as Sweet Potato Pie and Pecan Pie, to the downright, blatantly wicked: Hot Fudge Pudding.
No matter what Curtis cooks -- whether it is sweet, savory, traditional, or innovative, there are two special ingredients he never leaves out: heart and soul.
Customer Reviews:
Great cooking ideas for Vegitarians and Non-Vegitarians!.......2000-06-26
Curtis Aikens has assembled some of the greatest recipes for vegitarians and non-vegitarians alike. I have enjoyed all of his recipes particularly, his pizza's. He makes cooking easy and fun. I am not a creative cook and he shows how to use herbs and vegetables - something I have never experimented with before. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Featuring the very best recipes from her weekly Seattle-Post Intelligencer column “Fresh from the Garden,” Ann Lovejoy's newest book consolidates her passion for gardening and cooking into a year-round celebration of fresh, organic ingredients. Organized by season, her simple, uncluttered recipes emphasize bright flavors, aromatic herbs, and an abundance of fresh produce — from familiar favorites like raspberries and zucchini to more exotic items such as garlic tips and dandelion greens. Recipes include Lavender Lemonade, Grilled Prawns with Pumpkin Seed Salsa, Garlic Turkey with Green Peppercorn Gravy, Cress and Fennel Soup, Ginger-Berry Shortcake, and many more. Lovejoy offers a wealth of advice on selecting and growing specific varieties of produce, and her time-tested organic gardening tips are designed to help readers make the most of their growing year.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Northwest eaters.......2007-09-26
Ann Lovejoy, better known as a gardening writer, writes a weekly food column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and this cookbook draws from her columns. The cookbook is organized by season, and recipes rely on foods that can be grown or bought in the west-of-Cascades Pacific Northwest (both vegetarian and not). She believes in local, organic food where possible; she is careful about sodium and fat (but maybe carbohydrate-heavy for diabetics); most recipes are for 4 servings (2 adults and 2 teenage boys) and many are vegetarian. Flesh recipes usually rely on chicken and seafood rather than beef and pork. She encourages experimentation.
The book provides seasonal recipes and menus and includes growing tips for home gardeners. Recipes we like include Asparagus with Shallot, Thyme, Parsley and Lemon Sauce (spring) and Hot Chicken Noodle Salad (also spring). Page numbers are in the outer page margins, which makes recipes easy to find, but the index gives them under main ingredients rather than recipe titles.
We have tried dozens of Ann's recipes, both from the book and her columns since she wrote the book. (She is one of the few food writers I collect every week.) I like some of her recipes and don't like others, but I recommend the book in spite of personal reservations about specific recipes--there is probably something here you will like or can adapt. Our typical complaint when we don't like a recipe is that it isn't highly seasoned. This book might not help someone in Minnesota, but it does work well anywhere with a Mediterranean-type climate, and ideas can be adapted to local foods.
The book is in print in Sept. 2007. It is worthwhile if you can get fresh ingredients and are willing to experiment with seasoning.
Book Description
Tracing the history of landscape park design from British gardens up through the city park designs of Frederick Law Olmsted, Ethan Carr places national park landscape architecture within a larger historical context. Despite the difficulties now confronting the parks, their continued ability to attract millions of visitors suggests that their creators succeeded in presenting a captivating vision of a once-wild America.

worth while reference.......2007-08-25
We use the whole set for references at work. It is terrific and I remind women that they can borrow it from the library. Worthwhile having on your own shelf!
What ever expecting mother should know.......2007-06-30
I used this book with both of my children. I never called the doctor once during the children's first year. When the doctor asked me why I was the only parent that had not had called her with a million questions, I explained that the answers I had sought were in this book. I purchased this copy for a friends daughter. A must read.
A must-have for expectant and new parents.......2007-04-11
This set includes two of the most informative books out there. The chapters are clear and easy to follow and are absolutely full of great information. I can't think of a better book for expectant parents and the first year book is a helpful resource to have on hand, too, to accompany The Baby Book by Dr. Sears, both of which should be in every parent's bookcase.
Love This Book Series.......2006-12-20
I read When You're Expecting during both my pregnancies. I am the proud mother of 2 girls, ages 13 and 2. These books are filled with valuable information and facts. I loved the week by week details on growth and development of both baby and mother during pregnancy in When You're Expecting. My younger sister is now pregnant with her first and I'm buying her this set as her first baby gift! It's a must read!
Good combination of reference books for the pregnant mother!.......2006-07-18
