Wolves like you've never f**king seen them before! S***, this book f**king rocks!.......2006-02-28
Yup, wolves are my favorite canine of all time and not only do they rock and I love them, they are topped ONLY by hyenas and the 8 big cats. On to this book being filled with lots of interesting and worthwhile information, not to mention beautiful photographs of wolves playing, fighting, eating, howling, giving birth, showing compassion, snarling, being cool, being cute and taking a dive in the water or a hunt in the snow. This beautiful ode to the world's coolest and most beautiful canine is among the best books I've ever read and it has all the things mentioned above and a whole lot more, including a history of how all wolves mattered in the past and how they matter now. If you like wolves or any sort of nature, you need to get this book without stall. Oh yeah, there's even a cute yet suspicious picture of wolves sharing food with a puma(one of the 8 big cats)!
Extremely worthy.......2006-02-01
This book is filled with the most beautiful photographs, cover to cover! But it is more than a photo book; every chapter deals with a topic of wolves- hunting, mating, etcetera- and gives information in detail. Just a quick flip through this book and you will be hooked! I own the soft cover version, which sells for $14.95, and believe me, that is an incredible price for what this book contains. Buy it now!

An essential illustrated survey of charted design motifs, both traditional and modern, for all knitters.
Customer Reviews:
great for beading.......2006-06-22
I doubt if I will knit from this book, but for loomwork especially this is terrific with so many interesting patterns.
Good for design ideas.......2006-03-04
I guess I was a little disappointed in this book. I had expected it to be designed and arranged along the lines of The Knitting Stitch Bible. I was wrong. It is mostly a book of graphs and charts that provide only a very sketchy notion of what the knitted fabric is like. Because of this, however, the book does allow one to create interesting motifs in more than one genre. I used one of the designs for a plastic canvas needlepoint project. One does have to use the patterns with care, however, as the stitches in knitting are "stitches" whereas the stitches in needlepoint are "across the bars." In short, you can come out wrong if you don't pay attention to counting bars rather than openings. One might also use the graphs to design beaded works. The caveat on this use of the book is that the number of rows and stitches in most of the designs may produced a much larger product than you desire. Ultimately I guess, if looking for a stitch directory, I'd look at other books; there are a lot of them out there.
The best book for design ideas!.......2006-01-08
I am relatively new to knitting, and I have been searching for a couple years for a book that would just have patterns in it ..... and I've finally found it!
This is the best knitting "idea" book I have come across!! The book is divided into designs based on region, and there are so very many wonderful ideas!! I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some fresh new patterns.
The fact that the book is spiral-bound is super, too. It will lay open so you can follow it while knitting. The only bad thing about the whole book is that the spiral rings actually come out of the binding when you try to close it, so you have to insert the rings back into the holes before you close it. At least that's what happens with mine!! But it's definitely worth the effort!
Overall, hands down, the BEST knitting companion I've ever found!!
Inspiring and Pretty.......2005-08-08
I find this book inspiring, because I love color and fair isle patterns. One cool thing about this book is that it takes an idea or a motif and then shows it in several different color combinations to show you how that would alter the look. This is in addition to the 1000 different motifs. (If you count all the different color combinations as individual options, there are 500 just from page 18-55, and the patterns continue all the way up to page 277.)
A note for fair isle purists: roughly half the patterns call for more than 2 colors per row.
Microsoft Excel works much better than photocopying for patterns like this. I select all the cells and set them to the size of a little rectangle that approximates my gauge of sts/rows per inch. Then I color them with the colors of yarn I will be using (ctrl + click to select more than one cell at a time). It works great for a visual representation of what your finished project will look like. I have 40 skeins of beautiful fine wool in 4 colors, sitting in a box, waiting for me to decide what to do with them, and this book has given me the inspiration to do that.
fairly useful book, very useless binding.......2005-07-24
Overall, I'd say this is a fairly decent pattern book. I bought it to use for designing market bags for the women in my family. I plan on using the argyle pattern (which is excellent), but out of 1,000 motifs, that's the only one I'll be using.
This book essentially works on the principle of quantity over quality. I'd say about half of the patterns are actually not very good at all, and pretty much all of the rest I'm not interested in due to personal preference. But there are just so many offered that you still have a decent chance of finding what you're looking for.
My biggest complaint is that the patterns are not modern enough. I liked the argyle because that is an older pattern that came back into vogue a couple of years ago, making it the most current pattern in the book. Since most of the women that I am knitting for have a very modern put-together look that I didn't find in this book, I will still be making my own stripe and color block patterns for most of the bags. Most of the 'modern' patterns in the book are geared toward children (alphabet, toys, flowers, insects, animals, etc).
The only reason that I consider this book pretty good is that fair isle is one of the most enduring pattern styles that I know of. If you're a fan of traditional fair isle patterns, then this is probably a good book for you. I'm sure that there are lots of fair isle fans that could get great use out of this book. There are also ethnic patterns sorted by area of origin, but the fair isle section is by far the largest.
The binding really is awful. The cover pictured is actually a cardboard binder that the book is not really attached to. It has little holes in the inside that the spiral binding of the book is supposed to slip into, but good luck using the book with it attached to the cover. It wasn't even attached when I received it in the mail and I've since made peace with the cover remaining unattached. That the spiral binding won't even keep the pages together when I flip through the book is a much bigger problem. The publisher might as well have just sent the pages in the mail with no binding at all for as well as the binding they used actually works.

Not Real Sign Language.......2007-10-13
I was really disappointed that there was no real sign language in this book. It's just made up signs that they have given meaning. If that's all I wanted, I could have done that myself. If I'm going to teach my son sign language, I want him to be able to use it to communicate with more than just myself, I want him to be able to use it with anyone who knows sign language. This book is mainly a bunch of stories about how other people use their made up signs, which is fine for sentiment, buy not good for teaching your own child real sign language.
Great research, no need to make up signs.......2007-10-11
This is a great tool for learning how and why to sign with your baby. I don't agree with making up signs though. We already have signs established in our Deaf Culture. Why not use theirs and allow it to be used later in life as well? I would recommend buying this book for the information but I bought a sign language dictionary with it, Teach Your Tot to Sign from Stacy Thompson and it has every sign that I have needed in it. It helped me so much to bring it along with me in my car and if I don't know a sign, I quickly just looked it up and my daughter learned the "real" sign for tree. Good luck and signing is a wonderful experience in our family, I hope it is in yours too.

I can't wait to talk with my baby........2007-10-01
I'm still reading this but I am almost finished. It provides really good information about how and why to use baby signs. I also really like that their information is based on actual research that they have completed. I didn't realize all the benefits that can come from using baby signs. I look forward to being able to talk with my daughter soon.
This REALLY WORKS!!!.......2007-08-24
I waited till my daughter was 9mths old. I started with "All Done". Right before I let her out of the high chair, I'd say All Done & wave my arm. She didn't catch on for a few weeks but I kept at it. Then one day, I was pressuring her to eat (as all moms do at some point) and she began waving her arm! As soon as she waved her arm, I took her out. She got really excited and began waving her arm when she was done playing, or swinging or diaper changing. When possible, we would stop what we were doing to respect her wishes and reinforce the sign! That was at 10 months and just the beginning. By the time she was 13 months old, she could sign 22 different words. We used a lot of the book's signs and were making up signs for animals, vehicles, objects, actions and she picked up a sign a day. We'd say the specific word along with doing the sign like this book suggests and she picked up both. She was doing over 50 signs by the time she turned 15months old. Now she's only signing words that she can't speak. She's talking so much at 16months. Everyone told us that she wouldn't talk if she signed because she'd have no incentive but we trusted the book and persisted with signing and I have to say that really paid off! We had no issues with anger or frustration since she was consistently able to tell us what she wanted. Signing also helped in distracting her when she didn't get what she wanted and kept her entertained on long car rides. :) This book really helps to do it right.
Should have purchased sooner.......2007-08-09
I bought this book when my son turned one. He was getting really frustrated that he couldn't communicate with me. Right away I taught him how to sign for eat and drink. I wish I would have started with him earlier. His language skills picked up really fast after his first birthday and he was able to learn the words quicker than the sign. I found the book a good, quick read and the signs easy to learn. I would start with my next baby at around 9 months.
Book Description
Babies usually start to talk around the age of two, but they can learn to communicate through sign language as early as six months. Using simple signs, babies canÂand love toÂtell their parents how they feel and what they need. Rather than guessing what is in the mind of a fussy infant, parents could Âtalk with their babies and discover when they are hungry, tired, ready to play, feeling unwell, or ready for a hug. Learning sign language also helps babies acquire the mental building blocks for speaking, and studies prove that babies who learn to sign are better at language than those who donÂ't.
This new book from sign language teacher Andrea Fixell and musician Ted Stafford uses songs, games, photos, and easy-to-follow instructions to help parents teach basic American Sign Language to babies. The stand-up format makes it easy to learn and practice the simple hand gestures with your baby, helpful tips offer encouragement, and silly songs ensure you both have fun while learning.

above average.......2007-09-20
better than most of these types of books I enjoyed it. useful, too. If you want a fast read on the subject and are willing to sit through a tedious middle, this is for you!
I've read three or four baby books. Also recommend:What to Expect When You're Expecting, Third Edition
Good Book.......2007-07-04
I like this book, it's got all the basics and then some. I really like the way it's able to stand upright, so you can leave it out on the counter.
Fine, but there are better resources out there.......2007-03-22
On the plus side: This book is printed in an easel-like format so you can prop it up on a table beside you.
That being said, sign language is very fluid and still pictures can't really show you all the motions involved in making a sign. There are many FREE resources on the web that will teach you a greater sign language vocabulary, and some have video so you can see the actual motions as they are made.
This book is really better for someone who only wants to teach their baby some words in sign language rather than someone looking to teach their child to communicate.
Not very practical.......2007-01-22
My daughter and I were hoping to be able to teach signs so her nine month oold could make his wishes known - but 'train', 'plane' - not exactly useful if he wants a drink of water. Good hints to remember the signs, but the choice of signs - not too much use for the word plane or tiger. Does anyone know of a set with words that might be used more
good basic skills book.......2007-01-03
This book is great to help tech your child sign language. I love that it has a paragraph about each sign and suggests more advanced signs too.

Timeless Language Advice.......2004-07-09
Ms. Dougherty presents a timeless approach to language development in a natural way that every parent and educator can clearly understand. Too often educators try to speak in educational jargon, missing the opportunity to convey precious, but simple developmental information and techniques to busy parents. Ms. Dougherty's approach is down to earth and reflective of her many years of experience and research. Her work is a breath of fresh air in a world filled with medical and technical terminology. If, indeed these methods are so obvious, how is it that we have so many language-impaired preschoolers and kindergarten children entering school today with resulting learning and language disorders? What may seem to some to be obvious, needed to be put down on paper, so that all may benefit from this proven system of developing language. (Dr.E)
This book is superficial! Not helpful........2004-06-28
I bought this book BECAUSE of the five-star reviews in Amazon. It was a terrible mistake to believe in what was written. This book is extremely superficial. I read the whole book but noticed that it was phony by page 4. Before buying, read the excerpt of Chapter 1 for yourself. See if there is anything useful there.
And don't be disappointed if you think this book is about talking to your "baby". Most of the examples and pictures show a parent talking to a big toddler: "Please get me two boxes of pasta" (showing a boy in a supermarket helping his dad); "look under the table" (showing a girl who misplaced her teddy bear); "we play baseball with a hat and a ball" (showing a big boy holding a bat) and so on.
[...] The author actually says that the parent should imitate the infant's babbling sounds. It is at least debatable that this confuses more than helps the baby. If you are close to a library, read pages 45 to 50 to get some ideas about what to say at a supermarket. That part is useful. Another good source is pages 160-161 of What to Expect the First Year. Otherwise, just talk to your baby without reading this book.
I am sorry for the long and detailed (and apparently aggressive) message, but I felt that I should explain why one should be suspicious of the five stars rating this book has received.
How to Talk to Your Baby.......2003-07-28
I refer to this book often for ideas when speaking with my little guys. It is an easy read and a great reference tool. I keep it handy!
This is a very good book.......2002-11-17
This is a very good book.
"delivers it beautifully and understandably".......2002-02-08
(This review was written by Mia Cronan for Mainstreetmom.com)
As new parents, we always said we'd never talk "baby talk" to our kids, so that they might grow up with strong communication skills. Well, it takes more than that, as we all now know. How to Talk to Your Baby explains what it does take, and it delivers it beautifully and understandably.
Studies show that good communication affects overall ability to learn. Ms. Dougherty understands that parents today have to make time for so many things that contribute to our kids' development. She teaches us how to teach our babies, all within the framework of our busy daily routines.
You'll find great illustrations, examples of good speech habits, methods for making yourself clear to your child, and fun games that enhance the whole process.
Ms. Dougherty shows us how to have fun helping our tots learn to communicate. I highly recommend this book to parents who would like to round out their own commuication skills for the benefit of their children!

Book Description
A chronicle of a man, his wife and their many adventures, traveling while married. On it's own, it seems a rather simple premise, until you throw into the mix, a mother-in-law, a wife who enjoys shopping a bit too much, baby talk and other adventures.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, even if you are single!.......2004-07-08
This is the 2nd book I have read of Mr. Miserandino's and I enjoyed every minute of it, as much, and if possible even more than the first. It is funny, lighthearted, and engaging.
This easy-to-read book provides even more interesting travel destinations and leaves you wanting to travel more often yourself and read more of his married adventures.
Whether you are single, engaged, or married; enjoy travelling or like living vicariously through other people's travels, you will enjoy this book.
Great travel book and funny too.......2004-05-26
The title of this book should be "Fun, Fun, and More Fun." Mr. Miserandino has succeeded in introducing a great mother-in-law into a travelling tale starring his wife, great locations, and great food. This is a funny book but also a treasure trove of information about popular travel destinations. Even though you may have visited these places, the author presents the places in a different light and never fails to identify great places to eat. I suspect that the author returns from these trips fat and poor, since the food is abundant and his wife shops non-stop. But what is life for but to eat, drink, and be merry? And shop!
The book is well written and I recommend it if you want to read a "fun book" but especially if you intend to visit Niagara Falls, Newport (RI), Sanibel Island, Opryland, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Mobile (AL), San Antonio, Grand Rapids (MI), or if you wish to take a river or luxury cruise.
