First of all, I love jewelry beading and metal clay. This book is a must for people beggining in this art and others who would like to know about this form of Art. It is a step by step book that shows the process of metal art from the basic tools to the finished product incorporating elements of jewelry beading. How clever! It's full of photographs, detailed instructions and it has a wonderful big letter format.

Metal Clay for Beaders offers good examples/projects/inspiration for Beaders who are venturing into the wonderful world of Metal Clay. There is a nice range of styles and skill levels in the projects to appeal to all beaders, as well as to Metal Clay Artists wishing to add beading to their creations. Well written with good, clear pictures. Overall, a very good cross-over book for both Beaders and Metal Clayers.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The pictures and ideas for projects were new and very inspiring...not easy when there are so many books out on the subjects. A good review on the different types of metal clay and how each can be used. This book is a valuable addition a metal clay and beaders library and well worth the price.

This book on working PMC clay is the best one I've ever seen. I don't have the first book, but would love to see that one as well, if it is as comprehensive and inspiring as this one is. I do recommend this book to anyone new to metal clay, or anyone who's already having fun with this creative substance. As a matter of fact, I did my first PMC metal clay project with my sister, and I liked this book so well that I purchased an additional copy to give to her for her birthday. She just loves it as I do.

This book is an excellent reference book describing seeds.
Giving the botanical name and common name. Most helpful with information on germination and were the seeds will grow best. And the the section that has thumbnail pictures
is excellent. The ease of using the paperback is all so great.

Excellent book, but NOTE..........2006-04-07

This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a no-nonsense, complete description of how to start each of the many kinds of seeds that I can never resist buy, collecting, or trading for.

One thing that people should note, though: the plants are listed in alphabetical order by their Latin names. There is an appendix that has the common names and what the Latin name is for each, but I can't imagine doing that for every single plant-- what a pain! I like to know both Latin and common names, so I was fine with this system. But for someone who's only familiar with the common names of plants, this book is going to be a lot harder to use. (On the bright side, learning the Latin names can be a lot of fun, so if you're at all open to the idea, go for it!)

Really and truly useful.......2004-08-10

In addition to concise profiles of 500 bloomers, there's a handy gallery of color photographs and my favorite section, a 50-page chart that lists major and minor species along with their bloom times, colors, and cultural requirements. This book is designed to be useful, and it is!

What's a dyed-in-the-wool gardener to do when faced with stubborn Old Man Winter's downright refusal to let much of anything grow? Force it, that's what. Forcing is the art of convincing a bulb, branch, houseplant, or cutting to flower when it would otherwise be dormant. So when the drabness of winter and its attendant exorbitant price for cut flowers hits you, try forcing.

It's not difficult, but it does take some planning and foresight. If you want to force bulbs to flower in February, for instance, you have to order them in late summer so that you can pot them up in the fall. Twigs, on the other hand, are much easier to force: just cut them after six weeks of cold weather, put them in some water, and watch the virtual spring of your warm rooms transform them into leggy, flowering spirea, corylopsis, forsythia, or catkins, for instance. Author Katherine Whiteside explores associated topics such as choosing the best container and presentation within the home, as well as topics only an expert could love ("the narcissus question").

Forcing, Etc. is a good read. It's not a reference book in the truest sense of the word; the lack of an index is at fault there. This doesn't mean that there's not an awful lot of good information here for beginners and adepts, well and entertainingly written. But when you want to check on the fertilizer ratio for your calla lilies, you'll have to page through the entire book to find it (in a very small typeface, too). But with Richard Felber's gorgeous photos on every page, maybe that's not such a bad thing to have to do. --Stefanie Durbin

Katherine Whiteside makes forcing look really fun and easy, and it turns out it is! This book inspired me to try all sorts of things I've only seen in pictures. Her ideas are simple and wonderful and the way she writes is so down to earth that you feel confident that you can do it!
Get it, try it. You'll really enjoy it.
(It makes a really nice coffee table book too!)

I absolutely agree with the review given by Tom Krischan on 1/28/2000. This book is beautiful to look at, with lots of photographs that are well-taken and gorgeously displayed. That's the good part.... Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information in here that even the most basic gardener wouldn't already know from other sources. Bulbs are the primary area of discussion, with houseplants and cuttings from trees and shrubs also being discussed sparingly. It's not the best book for in-depth answers to your other forcing needs. It is nice to look at, though. A definite fixture for aesthetics on my coffee table at home, if nothing else.

It's a nice coffee table book. Something you look at once, then never touch again. Clearly not a reference book.

The first 85 pages discuss forcing hardy and tender bulbs. The remaining 68 pages talk about house plants, twigs, and cuttings. About half of the book is pictures, and much of the text from the other half is double spaced. There is not alot of information about forcing in this book.

Another problem, the book has no index. So when you wish to find information on forcing Amaryllis, you must page through it manually. No appendix in the back, no tables, no charts, and no reference section at all (except for a meager list of two dozen garden catalog companies).

There are pockets of detailed and interesting facts. But the poorly organized format makes it a chore to find this info.

On the plus side, the plant photography is great. It is the most worthwhile part of the book. Hundreds of photos of interesting, clear, crisp, and properly identified plants populate this book (unfortunately, since there is no index, you'll never find the picture you want - when you want it).

Nice coffee table book, but not much more.

The flowers are just beautiful. I bought this book to use as reference photos for drawing/painting. It's better than I anticipated.

Disapointing..........2000-11-21

Hi,

I'm a serious amatuer photographer and had heard a lot about this book. This is not a "how-to" book. I knew that going in. All the photographs have a black background or a white background. They are all approximately square. The author says he does this so we focus on the photos and not the background. After a few pages I got bored of the white and black backgrounds. If you read Shaw's books he'll tell you that black backgrounds in particular are very un-natural looking. In our world with a Sun a black background seldom occurs. Some of the white background shots look like a cheap Photoshop knockout. Although the author claims he uses only a lighted white backdrop to produce the effect. All in all, just not as moving as many have described it. You'd be much, much better off buying Shaw's book "Close-ups in Nature". I ended up sending mine back.

I was searching for a gift for my sister, who is a bulb and gardening master. After taking a closer look at the gorgeous photos and great practical advice, I bought a copy for myself as well! If you love flowers, you'll love this book.

Beautiful Bulbs in Bloom.......2000-03-25

This is a beautiful, artfully done book. I saw it for the first time just after viewing the Georgia O'Keefe art show in San Francisco. I was inspired by the show to look at flowers in books, and when I leafed through this book, I found the photographs as beautiful as the art work I had just enjoyed. The photos are works of art, very close up and extremely well choreographed. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a gorgeous collection of photos of beautiful bulbs in bloom!

Wow! I bought this book for my Mom for mother's day. The photos are hyper close-ups and so beautiful. It's a great coffee table book, and has the added benefit of a succinct section on chosing the right bulbs, planting storing, and using bulbs in container gardens. Very clever, very pretty.
