A Frank and Beautiful View of Inupiat Subsistence Lifestyle.......2005-09-04
Bill Hess as created a masterpiece. His grainy and moody black and white capture the bowhead hunt, Point Lay beluga hunts and Inupiat life in respectfully frank perfection. The book contains several stories that are threaded in and out of the Inupiat Bowhead hunts and gives a good look into the subsistence lifestyle of the Eskimos who live on the edge of the Arctic ocean.
Hess' journalistic writing style is easy to read and appreciate. He was able to get a close-up view on many things most will never have a chance to see from subsistence hunts, search and rescue missions and the 1990's attempt to free three ice-trapped gray whales which had captured the medias attention. It was interesting how different the story that reached us was compared to the situation and conclusion was on the ice.
If you have interest in whale hunting or Eskimo lifestyles, get this book. It is a great visual and prose look into this arctic world.
Insightful & honest.......2002-10-22
Bill Hess is a very gifted photographer, who works almost exclusively in black and white. He has spent a great deal of time with the people the people of the North Slope whose lives are shared in this book. For a number of years he was under contract to the North Slope Borough to produce a magazine about life on the North Slope (Uinniq-The Open Lead, which makes it clear that the people of the North Slope felt that he represents them clearly and fairly.
One could enjoy this book for the photography alone, but it is so much more than that. Whaling is a central focus of North Slope Inupiat culture; it is an inextricable part. People here know that; and the whalers carry it out as a sacred trust on behalf of the whole community.

This is a stunning visual presentation combined with a moving, unpretentious text. The drama of the three grey whales, the search for footprints . . . it is all powerful stuff. I have only been living in Barrow for nine months but so far there isn't a word that doesn't ring true.

Bill Hess Portrays the Reality of Arctic Life and Whaling.......1999-12-19
This book is a milestone among recent publications on Alaska because it portrays Alaska's Native people in an unvarnished and realistic way. This is NOT a commercial "coffee table book" or a series of pretty pictures suitable for note cards. A short story, hopefully, will illustrate my point.
When I was living in Barrow in the late 1980s, the mayor asked me to meet with a visiting photographer who had requested information on traditional whale hunting (I was a staff anthropologist at the time). The Anchorage photographer [NOT Bill Hess] wanted to "reconstruct" a whale hunt. This commercial photographer pleaded to have me call him in Anchorage next time a whale was harpooned so he could catch the next plane to Barrow (he had already talked the airline into sponsoring him). He promised that he would stage the photograph to show the local people in the best possible light and make them appreciated by all the tourists who come to Alaska.
After nearly throwing up, I politely told him that the Inupiat whale hunters were quite capable of taking care of themselves and did not need to be "airbrushed" and marketed for popular consumption.
Then I met Bill Hess. I immediately connected with his visceral understanding of Inupiat culture which he communicates so elegantly in words and photos in this book "Gift of the Whale." This book communicates a vision of contemporary Inupiat life that is unvarnished and somewhat raw; but - from my firsthand experience - authentic.
Bill Hess knows what it's like to sweat while breaking a sled trail through jumbled ice floes at 20 below. He earned his unique chance to communicate the symbiotic relationship between Inupiat hunters and the bowhead whale. This book takes the reader out onto the Arctic Ocean (in both its frozen and liquid state) and into the skin boats, skiffs, snowmachines and tents of crews who provide their families with life-giving food. The real stories (illustrated with stunning duotone photos of the people and the animals that are simultaneously revered and killed for survival) are more interesting and insightful than any pseudo-reality a market-driven journalist could create.
Bill Hess, through his photos and stories in this book, communicates how Inupiat culture continues to focus on the communal hunting and sharing of food for survival. This book communicates in vivid detail how impractical contemporary Western values of individual ego-driven materialism are when it's 20 below zero with the snow blowing sideways, and a fellow hunter is lost on the tundra. Bill illustrates how Inupiat society is built on respect and reverence for the resources and each other, keys to long-term survival in the Arctic. This book provides a visual banquet allowing the reader to enjoy and appreciate contemporary Inupiat whaling, life, and culture.

The Whales, They Give Themselves is an intimate life history of Harry Brower, Sr. (1924-1992), an Iñupiaq whaling captain, artisan, and community leader from Barrow, Alaska. In a life that spanned the profound cultural and economic changes of the twentieth century, Brower's vast knowledge of the natural world made him an essential contributor to the Native and scientific communities of the North. His desire to share his insights with future generations resulted in a series of conversations with friend and oral historian Karen Brewster, who weaves Harry's stories with cultural and historical background into this innovative and collaborative oral biography.
Brower was deeply committed to Native culture, and his life history is a moving expression of the Iñupiaq way of life. He was also influential in traditionally non-Native arenas in which Native and non-Native values sometimes collided. Acting as a mediator between Iñupiaq whalers and non-Native scientists, Brower communicated a vast understanding of bowhead whales and whaling that became the basis for a scientific research program and helped protect Iñupiaq subsistence whaling. He was a central architect of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation boundaries, and served for over twenty years as a consultant to scientists at the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. Brower's role in this collaborative research serves as one of the earliest and best examples of how scientists and Native experts can work together to advance knowledge. Such approaches are now promoted by researchers around the world.
The Whales, They Give Themselves not only conveys Brower's life story, but also is a cross-cultural journey of wisdom and friendship. Whereas academic oral historians once strove to erase the presence of the interviewer in the name of "objectivity," Brewster recognizes the influence her specific relationship with Brower had on the way he narrated his life. This volume is a major contribution to our understanding of northern peoples, and a testament to the immense value of collaborative oral history.

Inside view of Eskimo society.......2004-09-28
The child of a white whaler and trader who lived in the Arctic and an Eskimo mother, Harry Brower, born in 1924, straddled two worlds. Because of this, he was able to work out a satisfactory arrangement between the local Inupiaq Eskimo tribe and scientists interested in whales for scientific and environmental reasons. Most importantly to the Inupiaqs, the tribe was able to continue hunting whales as they had since time immemorial. For the Inupiaqs, such whale-hunting was a fundamental part of their culture, as the Plains Indians hunted buffalo. The cycle of the year centered on whale hunting, and many community events were based on the hunts and the cutting up, cooking, and preservation of the whales killed in a hunt. One would hardly realize Brower was not a native Eskimo steeped in the culture. His conversations range over all parts of Eskimo life--family life, surviving the winters, holidays, the inroads of European culture, hunting, and religion. Brower is a rich font of Eskimo life and lore. But beyond this, the material is informative and fetching especially for its unique, first-hand, picture of whale hunting from the viewpoint of Eskimos.

This is a very colorful book with easy to follow step by step instructions. I love the idea of being able to change the mood of a meal. The host is also able to invent a theme for any occasion! I love to sew and sometimes I like small projects to have fun with. This is the best napkin book around! Every page has things to do and great ideas and I have even come up with my own ideas!
This is a great book to use for holiday gifts also. I am already planning to make napkins for every holiday and for family too.
Some books have a few great projects but this one has "all" great projects!

The photography in this book is simply spectacular. Yes, the instructions are well-written and clear, but the reader can extract all sorts of ideas just by flipping through the beautiful pages. This book makes a great gift -- I've stocked up on 15 of them, just for that purpose.

Simply Napkins is a very informative book. What a simple way to dress up your table and very creative ideas to embelish napkins. As I do not entertain formally very often - the reference guides for table settings is a very nice touch. That will help me feel more confident on the occasions I do entertain formally. I especially liked the chapter entitled "Napkins As Gifts and Decor". Very neat ideas - even for people who don't sew. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Gail's first napkin book, "Quick Napkin Creations" changed the way our family eats dinner -- for the better -- and we haven't used a paper napkin since! Now "Simply Napkins" has raised the bar. It's really different from anything on the market, or previously published. Not just napkin folding (although the folds are uniquely easy, even for those of us with two left thumbs), but innovative. I love the affordable rings for any occasion, the fast, fun finishing techniques, the fabulous fashions and furnishings, and the all-new "Quilt-Lovers" section (who knew you could do so much with little fabric squares)? Also worth the price of the book are the napkin care and stain removal tips. So helpful. If you don't do anything else today, buy this book. Along with your collection of recipe books, this is a must-have reference. First impressions can really make the difference in any situation - including meal time. Whether you're making a snack for your kids or having the boss and his family for dinner, you can spice up a meal before it starts by having a lovely napkin arrangement.
It used to be that napkin arrangements were common place at just about any non-fast food restaurant, but it has become a lost art form except for the ritziest of hotels and most expensive 5-star restaurants where a basket of bread sticks can run you fifty bucks. Most restaurants just roll your utensils into a cloth napkin and have you set your own plate. Efficient, but not as elegant.
This tiny book only has 22 napkin folds, but they are more than enough. A color photo shows the arrangement, and detailed illustrations take you through each step in achieving the same pattern. Beautiful book.......2007-04-05
This book has lots of beautiful photographs which depict conifers in their mature size and shape. The book is inspiring but has an incomplete plant list. The author lists the most common varieties. A common problem with plant book is that it is hard to keep up with the new stock. I bought four new conifers this year that were not listed in the book. I would have liked to have seen some advise or planting designs on which conifers work well together. Overall it is a very inspirational book.

This book is a gorgeous, mouth-watering treatise on gardening with conifers. The photography accompanying the garden descriptions is spectacular with conifers shown in all kinds of light as well as different seasons. It makes you want to begin your gardens all over again using nothing but conifers!

this is a great reference on conifers. It shows how exciting and changeable conifers really are (I was never over-enthused by them previously). The book talks about how to use conifers in design, how to maintain them and then there is an encycolpedic reference at the end.

While there was no doubt that Adrian Bloom loves and knows Conifers. I was hoping for more help with identification pictures and information on individual conifers. I do enjoy the book nevertheless.

This book is recommended by the American Conifer Society. It is useful for both the beginner and more experienced conifer gardener. It is well organized and clearly written. A handy reference tool for those planning a garden or if you just want to check out a plant you saw in a garden or nursery. A must get for gardeners who take the hobby seriously. Besides a comprehensive list of plants, it goes into related topics such as how to use conifers in the garden, how to prune them, etc.

I must have 30-40 books on Roses, and this is my very favorite! The practical approach to planting and growing roses, plus the realistic, yet beautiful photographs are just two of the reasons every rose grower MUST have this book among their collection. I especially enjoyed the landscaping listing of disease-resistant selections. Jeff Cox knows his roses!

I love this book, and have found tons of inspiration in it. It's filled with ideas, technical answers, and beautiful photos. The book has tons information and is not just a glossary of popular roses.
The only drawback I found with this book is that almost all of the photos are of pink roses. I was hoping to find more photos of inspiring landscapes with yellow and red roses. However, that's only a minor detail, and all in all this book is fabulous. Highly recommended!
Practical and Useful.......2003-06-27
There are many books about roses but this is one of the better ones. Written by well-known garden host (HGTV and PBS) Jeff Cox, it is a beautiful yet practical book that delivers exactly what the title promises.
The first couple of hundred pages give you ideas for using roses in a whole range of different garden settings. The remainder explains how to buy, plant and care for roses. The advice is excellent for the novice or intermediate gardener. I give the writer full marks for not just providing a "directory of roses" - a cop-out all too often used to fill pages in garden books. Instead he shows how different types of roses can be used in the landscape.
The book has plenty of colour photographs showing roses used in different settings. I have to say that I was turned off by the hype on the cover. This is not a "ground-breaking book", the effects are not "dazzling" and as a guide it was useful rather than "inspirational". However, the writer has produced a practical, workman-like guide to effective landscape design using roses.
The book is well-designed and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who was thinkinf of incorporating roses into their garden.
