Good book for beginners.......2007-06-12
I am in the process of getting my first bulldog and this book was a helpful introduction to the breed and addressed my initial concerns about adopting a bulldog. It has great pictures and helpful tips about bringing home a new puppy. My only disappointment was that it lacked substantial and glossed over many topics such as training. Overall, great book for beginners though!
Good book .......2007-01-20

A favorite for mom and son.......2007-06-13
Finally a book that i love as well as my [...] son. A GREAT STORY AND A GREAT THEME. This is the book we give to my sons friends for Birthdays. Great for boys and girls. A persistant dog, a recovered crown and a heart-warming ending. I don't give many reviews but this story is worth it. You won't be disappointed.
Fun for all ages!.......2007-04-11
I bought this book for a few children as gifts and they love it! The pictures are bright and colorful and keep the children involved. The story has a wonderful message. I recommend this for any bulldog or story lover!
adorable book, love the lessons and the rhymes.......2007-01-10
this is a great followup to Gloria's first book about lovable Noelle, a bulldog who finds her way and her value in the world. This book is one of my daughters favorites and she loves the bright colorful pictures. I think we will be reading it together for many years!
Gloria's Second Book is as Good or Better than the First!.......2006-12-09
Noelle's Treasure Tale is a wonderful little book! And the illustrations are glorious! What wonderful, bold colors - that's the best looking crab I've ever seen! There's also a CD included - See With Your Heart - a very nice song. I hope there is a third installment with another original song by Gloria. And if there is, I hope the CD will also include Gloria reading the book. That would be the icing on the cake!
Merry Christmas, Noelle!
Estefan's Second Book is Every Bit as Good as Her First Effort, With a Story That is Both Simple and Profound.......2006-10-24
Last year's first children's book by Gloria Estefan, "The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog," was both an instant bestseller and critically acclaimed. (It spent five weeks at the number two spot on the New York Times children's picture book bestseller list, and was awarded the Latino Book Award for best picture book in English.)
This year with "Noelle's Treasure Tale," Estefan has done it again. The singer-turned-author's second children's book debuted in the third position on the New York Times children's picture book bestseller list, and the requisite critical acclaim is sure to follow.
If interested in background information, please see my initial review of her first book.
This book is again aimed at beginning readers, aged 4 to 8 -- although it is a story anyone can appreciate. It has the usual exquisite illustrations of Noelle's adventures by illustrator Michael Garland.
All editions come with a bonus CD, in English and Spanish, of an original composition sung by Estefan: "See With Your Heart," which nicely compliments the book. Some versions also include two tracks (in English and Spanish) of Estefan reading her book. I would recommend the version with all four tracks, because it is such a delight to listen to the audio version while reading along with the text. One can hope that a precedent has been established and that the third installment of Noelle's adventures, promised by her publisher, Rayo, will have an original song and an English and Spanish "read aloud" by Estefan.
The nature of this story is such that to provide a synopis that does it justice is to reveal too much. It is based on historical accounts of Spanish gallons that vanished in hurricanes off what is now called the "Treasure Coast" of Florida. Estefan and family have a vacation beach house in the area, and she said in televised interviews that the stories about three to-this-day un-recovered ships that sank, full of enormous treasure, in hurricanes provided the inspiration for this book.
Bulldog Noelle and "the little girl" (no name is provided in the first two books) who owns her are the main protagonists of the story. Both head to the Treasure Coast on vacation to search for buried treasure. Suffice it to say that few adults will be surprised to discover that the true treasure in this parable is not material riches. Rather it is a celebration of life and the idea that everyone is somehow connected, and that if all creatures work together in the end everything will work out for the best: a comforting message for children and adults alike.
Estefan definitely does not write "down" to her young prospective readers. The book uses these words: gallons, doubloons, unravel, insensitive, undertow, convinced, memorize, incredible, mysterious, ravenous and intuition. Fortunately, the book is so well crafted that even a pre-schooler who is listening to his or her parents read the book will enjoy the story -- and they may well be unconsciously increasing their potential verbal SAT score as well.
This is the rare sequel that is as good as the original. Publisher Rayo promises the third (and, as far as is known, final) Noelle book in time for Christmas 2007. I can hardly wait.

The good, the bad and the silly of entrepreneurship circa 1999.......2006-03-23
If you can't stand the thought of seeing the word 'entrepreneur' at least 144,000 times in print then stop reading now. Ditto, if the claim to the phrase 'I entrepreneur' makes you feel silly, weird or overcome with a nauseating feeling of gimmickiness.
Bulldog: Spirit Of The New Entrepreneur is nominally the story of an entrepreneur (told you!) and her cohorts who dream, build, grow and eventually sell a new media/digital design/consulting/reseller/developer/software business in the grip of the dot-com boom. Consequently, much of the tale is overcome with the type of feel-good language and new age dramatics that might have seemed like eureka at the time, but eventually was partly the cause of the bust period that followed. Eureka turned into euphoria turned into you know what. The book does not stop there though. Rubin has no qualms about taking the reader into infinite tangents talking about her travels, her youth, her friends, her techniques, venture capital, selling and contemplating. She gives special emphasis and space to branding though. One should brand, she advises, even before one has a product. Did someone say dot-com bust? She did: "trend-hopping is the first step toward creating a business plan..."
She tells a good story, confident of herself, although clearly knows more about visualization, hoping and networking than she does of process. There is a lesson right there of course, but if 'believing' was ever a kingdom she would be appointed its queen and that would be that. Most readers might not agree with fluffy touchy-feely new-ageism or believe creating a product was someone's destiny, but the author almost elevates the happenstance to a mystical level in all likelihood not heard of since Sufism. There is probably another lesson in there too.
All this packed, like sardines, among numerous anecdotes and quotations galore. Unfortunately, most of these foretellers have since gone broke or disappeared. Although, to be fair, there is a lot of knowledge on those same pages. That is the dilemma of the book though. Hindsight being what it is Bulldog: Spirit Of The New Entrepreneur could be the zeitgeist of 1999; alas what most people associate with the excesses and the shortcomings of that period are also part of the package.
Five Stars!.......2003-02-04
Anyone who has any notions of being an entrepreneur, or even climbing the ranks within a larger organization needs to read this book. It is filled with stories that inspire and motivate but also help you see the barriers and challenges of business in a new light. You don't have to read the book cover to cover but can pick and choose whatever catches your attention. I particularly liked the references to film, literature and poetry that provide insight and perspective as well as entertainment in the sidebars. If you manage teams, don't forget the chapter called THE TO DO LIST OF ARCHITECTS AND HEROES.
I completely disagree with the above negative critique.......2003-01-31
As a fellow 20 year entrepreneur with 200 employees, I loved how Ellie Rubin turned the word entrepreneur into a verb! How cool is that?? (For all of us who actually do it on a daily basis, day in and day out).
Yes, there is an element of "touchy feeley" in the book, but since when is entrepreneuring a science? Being a great entrepreneur has everything to do with your instincts, creating something incredible when all the other rational people tell you it can't be done. Most of the "aha" ideas I've had for my company came from the kinds of things Ellie talks about in her book. If you want to know how to start or grow a company, those things are the things you should be thinking about.
Ellie Rubin's brilliance is proven by the fact that even the book that she has written about her own business has turned her in to a brand herself! I see all over the place that the Ellie Rubin brand is doing speaking engagements at business schools, creating supplemetary materials and so on. In essence, Ellie seems to have created another business out of her book about her original business! That is pure genius as far as I'm concerned. And why didn't I think of it myself, dammit!
Inspiration.......2003-01-25
Cudos to Rubin for shedding light on the ups, downs and excitment of running your own business. Although many of us have dreamed of being an entrepreneur there are few that are brave enough to take the leap of faith. Combine Rubin's tenacity and balls for starting a business in a mostly 'male dominated' industry with the strength and wherewithall to relive the experience and transcribe it into a book and you have nothing short of a modern day hero. Building a business from an office of two in Canada to securing major investors and partners in Silicon Valley and LA, Bulldog is the story of a modern day success driven by ambition, smarts and confidence. Using her insights to help guide us on this incredible journey called 'entrepreneuring' Rubin not only creates a new language for those voyagers who are brave enough to embark on the trip, but also provides the ABC's of how to believe in yourself enough to succeed. Rubin is insightful while still allowing the reader to feel like they have entered her world -- if you are someone who has always dreamed of starting your own business then don't even think about it unless you read this book first.
The only question Rubin leaves us asking is: when is her second book coming out and what will she entice us with next???
Touchy-Feely Pablum.......2001-08-31
This is the worst business book I've ever read, and I've read many. I actually returned it for a refund.
How does a woman transform a graphic design company into a digital asset management company? You would be hard-pressed to find out reading this book. Does Rubin have any programming experience? How does she recruit and manage her team? How do they design the product? How do they combat competition? How do they get clients? These are questions the reader are interested in, and it would have been enlightening if Rubin answered them. She doesn't.
What she did instead was recycle a lot of platitudes, buzzword-laden advice that you can get from magazines. She should have shared more of her experiences, in greater detail, rather wax philosophical on the idea of entrepreneurial spirit. It's the standard "entreprenuers are risk-taking forward-thinking heroes, and aren't I great as one" pablum.
When I flipped through the book in the bookstore, I was excited to see a chapter that talks about going to "Mecca" (Silicon Valley). Finally, I thought, here's an account of how an outsider (a Canadian) establishes herself in Silicon Valley. After reading the chapter, I am no more enlightened than before. She simply writes that she made a lot of connections and that the experience was enriching, leaving one to ask: who? when? where? what? how?
I can't remember the exact details of her Postcard Visualization exercise, but it's something like visualizing your life in 5 years as it would appear on a postcard. This is exactly the kind of touchy-feely "advice" that pervades the book. There is not a single original insight or concept. For this I should pay money to read?

Don't judge a book by its cover........2007-01-17
I almost passed this book by because I don't like the motif of hands; I thought the content inside might be too cute or tacky. I did buy it though, and I can't wait to use it. The patterns are beautiful and many and they are all Baltimore style with a quarter of the pattern, so that it fits on the page. They can be easily traced or photocopied to use in any way one sees fit.
My go-to gal for machine appliqué.......2007-01-05
I started out as a hand appliquér. When I decided to learn fusible machine appliqué, I took this book off the shelf time and time again to refresh my memory on the steps, tips, and tricks involved, including how to get around corners and handle points. Sue's book is an excellent reference. Plentiful, detailed illustrations show exact needle positions and what the stitches should look like. Thanks Sue! You are my go-to gal for raw-edge machine appliqué.

No turning under raw edges.......2005-09-01
I first saw Sue Nickel's on "Simply Quilts" with Alex Anderson, demonstrating her techniques. This method of applique looks as good as the kind you turn under the raw edges, but it takes alot less time. Sue also has a technique where you remove the inside of the fusible web so the applique isn't so hard. If you want a book on all kinds of applique techniques, then I would recommend Harriet Hargrave's "Mastering Machine Applique". I like Sue's approach to applique the best.
Machine Applique A Sampler of Techniques........2005-08-06
I am always pleased by the speedy service and the condition and the quailty of the merchandise.
Thanks
Revolutionizing!.......2003-05-28
I am a relatively new appliquer and I haven't read many books on applique. After reading this book, my applique was revolutionized! I learned how to use freezer paper and fabric glue to machine applique (why didn't I think of that!).
Until now I have only appliqued by hand or using the fusible method. I don't like the raw-edge look, however, so I really gained a lot of value from Sue Nickel's insights on using glue.
If you haven't tried the iron-and glue method using freezer paper for machine applique that looks like it was done by hand, this book will inspire you!
There are lots of templates to try out her different methods and you can create a very traditional looking quilt from her patterns.

Come Back Alive isn't exactly a book that inspires you to dive into the delights of traveling. Robert Young Pelton is best known for his previous book, The World's Most Dangerous Places, and has survived numerous calamities--from car wrecks and a plane crash to killer bees. That he has indeed come back alive does initially lend credence to his advice--which includes what to eat in the bush, which animals are most deadly, and how to avoid being kidnapped.
Pelton's survival tips and facts range from the obvious (if thirsty in the desert, look for greenery) and the interesting (deer send some 16,000 humans to the hospital annually by causing auto accidents), to the patently absurd. While he may be most helpful when writing about nature, Pelton--a worldwide traveler--comes off as colorfully clueless when he heads out to urban destinations. While advising travelers to travel lightly, he recommends loading oneself onto a plane thusly: "Use a soft, legal-sized carryon bag. Wear a larger than normal waist pack with heavy items, use a correspondent's vest to stuff in other heavy items, clothes, and fragiles. Carry a second laptop bag ... filled with reading material, CD player, whatever...."
Not only does this sound like an Olympic feat, it also contradicts his advice not to look like a tourist. As for how to surreptitiously conceal cash, Pelton recommends rolling it up in straws. That's right, straws. Certainly original, but the presence of numerous straws in a suitcase seems a likely way to ensure your luggage is ripped apart for cocaine. If carrying it on your person, what does one do to dislodge a bill from the straw, toot it at the cashier?
Nevertheless, with its charts (of average miles walked by a lost person), quizzes (are you a leader?), and occasionally insightful information, Come Back Alive is a remarkable journey through Danger Land (a.k.a. the modern world), and one that is sure to help enliven any cocktail party with its informational icebreakers. "I'm reading the oddest book," you might begin, "which recommends carrying money in straws...." --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
Welcome to the art of survival!
Come Back Alive is the indispensable and witty guide to avoiding nasty situations, whether on a business trip, an adventure vacation, or a weekend hike. In this book, the author of the classic travel annual The World's Most Dangerous Places, Robert Young Pelton--"Dangerman" (Toronto Globe & Mail); "tourist with an attitude" (Outside magazine); "the patron saint of adventure travelers" (ZineZone. com)--reveals the secrets that have kept him alive and laughing:
in the desert: finding water where it ain't, dehydration and rehydration, copping a nuclear tan
in the jungle: trekking, camping, jungle tucker, what to do when there's no bridge
in the woods: when you're tentless and clueless, when dinner's still mobile
in the snow: dressing for excess; building a snow cave, what to do when someone's going hypo
on the road: surviving adventure travel, from mild to wild
when assaulted: passive self-defense, active self-defense, better ideas in self-defense
when kidnapped: how to avoid it, how to survive it
during natural disasters: hurricanes, avalanches, lightning, earthquakes, and more!
when facing nasty animals: animals that bite you, eat you, sting you, and what to do when Bambi strikes back
You will also learn strategies for adventure travel, urban areas, war zones, terrorism, crime spots, and even the dangers of your own house--the place you're most likely to get into trouble.
Whether you are young or old, man or woman, going on a business trip, a ski weekend, an African safari, or just to the corner store,
Come Back Alive gives you the comprehensive and fascinating advice you'll need to protect yourself. No matter where you're going, what you're doing, or how dangerous you want to get,
Come Back Alive is essential to your safe and stylish return.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a survival author that's not hopped up on his own legend........2007-04-21
Have you ever been frustrated by those survival authors that go out into the woods and make treehouses, wells, and snares with only a Swiss Army Knife and make it sound like it's the easiest thing to do? Or self-defense gurus who make it sound like you could be Van Damme just by reading their books? Me too. Pelton is not one of these. He encourages "common sense". Something that's largely missing in many survival books. He gives handy survival tips you might actually use, like how to travel without checking luggage. Face it, it's unlikely your going to have to live like Tom Hanks from "Castaway" and if you do, all the survival books in the world will only help you so much. I'd recommend reading this book as a supplement to "Dangerous Places". You'll get more out of both that way.
we're left with little choice...thus this book sells.......2004-09-16
The fact that we have little choice of material in this genre is the main reason a book like this sells. Sure, some of the information is entertaining, that's for sure, but mostly it's full of fluff, inaccuracies, and scant on precious details which would allow a novice or newbie to actually put the information to good use.
The fact that there is a lot of info on simpler topics (such as water purification and other 'jungle survival' stuff) doesn't quite make up for the fact that many of us will be roaming around the cities and villages of the developing world, and could use a little know-how in that area. Some is indeed offered, but it is riddled with factual error and often illustrates many a misconception on the part of the author.
RYP is definitely a powerhouse of knowledge on the subject of third-world travel, but this book almost looks like an early attempt at the topic, and definitely needed a LOT more work and research before publication.
But alas, there's not a whole lot out there to choose from. If you're going to the bush/desert, there are better guides out there. If you're going to the city, save your cash and do a web search instead.
Never take personal security for granted........2003-06-14
I've been relying on advice from this book and "Most Dangerous Places" for several years now. Although I wouldn't call it my "gospel" there are a lot of useful pieces of information that could save your life. Although I am not constantly exposed to life-threatening danger, my experience shows me that most accidents and mishaps occur to tourists because they drop their guard or get complacent. My advice is simple. Don't be paranoid, but never take personal security for granted - even if you are just going to the local shops...
Swiftly put together.......2003-03-05
This book was to hastly put together, the author needed to do more research on the subjects contained in the book. Some of the topics and there advice seemed to be far fetched or not true at all.
Very real and informative.......2002-10-18
I really disagree with most of the reviews here. I found this book fascinating and potentially useful. I live in the U.S., but if I were to travel anywhere outside the "First World", I would read this book 4-5 times. I can't really say about the rest of the chapters (not enough personal experience), but the chapter on self-defense is dead on. Most books will tell you that you can defened yourself well, but the reality is, as Pelton says, you are up against guys who: a. make a living 'jacking people', and b. are pre-prepared for the assault, whereas you are on your cell phone or counting your travelers checks. Very true. The cards are so stacked against you most of the time. This book is just trying to tell the truth about that, from Pelton's experience, and trying to give you some 'cards' so that you are not so outgunned. For example, his advice about "using a sense of humor" in the Third World to get out of jams is very useful, and could save lives. Just smiling at someone or making a hand gesture could save you. I have seen it in action myself, and have used it. Like I say, against someone bent on jacking you, your chances are slim, but in most other situations, humor could work. Like I said, if I had one book to take on a "Third World Tour", this would be it.
