Excellent Reference Book.......2004-08-26
Beautifully photographed dictionary of smocking stiches. Very complete and easy to follow if you are a beginner. No smocking patterns (plates) are included in this book. A must have for all smockers.
Customer Reviews:
Best for specific stitches.......2006-08-29
This is a visually lovely book . The photos are clear and the individual concepts they present are easily comprehended. I was a little disappointed in the lack of continuity in the presentation of stitches and techniques, however, which makes it an average "how-to" book.
The text is quite literally from A to Z, a short encyclopedia of smocking art with different subjects discussed alphabetically. I had hoped that specific patterns and designs for projects might be included; an introductory project followed by more complex works to carry the beginner figuratively from "A to Z." As it is, one has to hop from section to section to put together the information you need to do your own project. Some of the information, particularly about machine pleaters, is almost mid-way through the book. For a beginner, which I am, this is not quite as convenient as one could hope.
I suspect however, that the book is much too simple for the advanced worker; most of the techniques and information will probably be known to them from other sources including instructors. Nor is the encyclopedic format really lived up to, because I suspect that the advanced smocker would not find the exotic bits and pieces of information they really would like to have in this short and simple a volume.
The book is useful, especially for the types of stitches, but I think I'll need another to actually get started with a project.
possibly the world's only perfect smocking manual.......2004-04-29
This is the book I should have had when I learned to smock six years ago. This is also a book I can use and learn from for many years to come.
Published by Country Bumpkin (of Inspirations and AS&E Magazines), A-Z of Smocking is a true reference manual for all levels of smocking. IT features a spiral-bound format - something rare but highly appreciated by anyone who actually attempts to use how-to books. The subjects covered include fabrics, preparation, pleating, needles, threads and over 50 stitches; issues like backsmocking, inserting, color choices, buttonholes in pleats, smocking on knits, picture smocking, geometric smocking, counterchange techniques, freeform smocking...and much more than I can mention in a short book review. There are frequently Hint boxes accompanying each subject. Everything is presented in clear, step-by-step layouts that leave little room for misinterpretation.
Unlike most reference manuals, it is gorgeous. A-Z of Smocking also features quality photos and whimsical artwork on nearly every page: in fact, the same photographs from AS&E Magazine's past issues. This book is everything you might expect from the makers of that attractive publication.
I would suggest getting one for yourself regardless of your level of smocking expertise. You never know when you'll have one of those distracted moments when you forget a stitch or technique. And if you are ever inspired to give a pleater as a gift to a beginner, it would make the ideal companion gift!

Book Description
"Faerie folkes live in old Oakes."
According to German folklore, the holes found in oak trees are fairy pathways. At Winterthur, three acres of the incomparable garden on Oak Hill have been developed into a veritable fairy playground -- a garden especially for children. Enchanted Woods, canopied by majestic red, white, and scarlet oaks, has become a place of enchantment, mystery, and discovery.
In Discover Enchanted Woods, the sixth volume in the museum's Discover Series, landscape curator and author Denise Magnani takes us on a journey through the garden, offering a "behind-the-scenes" look at its creation. Shaped by the imagination and given substance by sculptures, child-size structures, serpentine walks, and "found" bits and pieces of the Winterthur estate, Enchanted Woods delights the visitor with a Troll Bridge, Faerie Cottage, Bird's Nest, Frog Hollow, Tulip Tree House, Story Stones, and Fairy Flower Labyrinth.
Magnani's in-depth involvement with both the development and interpretation of the garden serves her well in this "insider's" look at the newest Winterthur offering.

Bring the dazzling beauty and year-round bloom of the Winterthur Garden to your home landscape. Henry Francis du Pont devoted some seventy years to fashioning his world-renowned creation. In The Winterthur Guide to Color in Your Garden, author Ruth Joyce highlights the design principles that guided du Pont and describes how to achieve these stunning effects. Practical plants that have stood the test of time--native and non-native, common and unusual--are introduced month by month, grouped as they appear in the Winterthur landscape. Such an organization illuminates radiant and unusual color combinations as well as the wide variety of wildflowers and genera that bloom throughout the estate. The Quarry Garden, Glade Garden, and container plants at the Reflecting Pool are all included in this indispensable guide to creating a color-filled landscape of your own.

Book Description
A great artist may spend years painting one canvas, making infinitesimal changes in color, mood, and form until every element has been refined and perfected to satisfaction. Henry Francis du Pont was such a consummate artist, and the canvas was his beloved garden at Winterthur, du Pont's home from his birth in 1880 until his death in 1969. The sumptuous masterpiece he created in Wilmington, Delaware, is now open for the public to enjoy, but for years it functioned as a private horticultural laboratory where du Pont-primarily known as a visionary collector of American decorative arts-experimented as much with the landscape as with individual plant species gathered from the far corners of the globe.
In The Winterthur Garden, author Denise Magnani, curator of landscape at Winterthur, offers an intimate portrait of both the man and his environment. Magnani's text and additional essays are breathtakingly illustrated by landscape photographer Carol Betsch's lush pictures of this impeccably preserved national treasure. This newly issued paperback edition also features a new foreword by Winterthur's current director, Leslie Greene Bowman.
Customer Reviews:
Overblown Prose/ Overblown Praise.......2000-01-01
The gardens at Winterthur are undoubtedly beautiful, but were grandly assisted by being built upon a magnificent stretch of undulating territory and executed by 300 gardeners during its development. DuPont's role is certainly worth lauding, but not in the embarrassingly fawning, reverential way this book is written. Even his daughter presents a more realistic portrait of the man, his garden, and his collecting obsessions in her own recent book.
He was such a shy and inarticulate man, that the quotes throughout the book are almost embarrassing. He sounds like Chauncy Gardner in "Being There." The author and her Winterthur sponsors would have served their subject better had they not expressed their admiration in such florid, effusive prose. A great garden speaks for itself.
Read, instead, Hal Bruce's, "Winterthur in Bloom" for a rich, lyrical tour of the natural garden without the irritating hype and turgid writing.
Slanted story of Henry Francis Dupont's Garden.......1998-03-07
As a director of Winterthur Garden near Wilmington, Delaware, the author is hardly about to criticize her employers or their deceased benefactor, Henry Francis Dupont, but she sometimes gets carried away with her praise for Harry while failing to provide much information on the Bidermanns, who started the estate, or on how gunpowder money, and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, funded Dupont's hobby which basically involved non-formal color woodland landscaping concentrating on rhododendrons. The book includes attractive color photos of the woods around the estate but provides only a small b/w map of the present estate and gardens, hardly suitable for use when touring the gardens. Not recommended for gardeners on tight budgets, but of interest to those who are fascinated with the Duponts.

Book Description
Tells the story of the creation and restoration of a masterpiece of 20th century naturalism.
Henry Francis du Pont, founder of Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, once wrote, "My work is in the garden." Influenced by British garden writers Gertrude Jekyll and William Robinson, du Pont began gardening in earnest in 1902. He became interested in the power of color in the landscape and in a naturalistic style of garden design that, although carefully planned, did not look contrived. Throughout his lifetime, du Pont experimented with design: succession of bloom, naturalism, and color harmony became the fundamental principles of his garden art. Even after the museum and garden opened to the public in 1951, he still considered himself to be "Head Gardener at Winterthur."
Discover the Winterthur Garden tells the story of the creation and restoration of this masterpiece of 20th-century naturalism. With beautiful color photogaphs by Ray Magnani and an afterword by Deputy Director Thomas Buchter, it is a book not only for tourists and travelers to Winerthur but also those interested in gardens, museums, and photography.

SYNOPSIS Within the vibrant pages of Kids Sacred Places, Kelee Katillac shares her therapeutic House of Belief philosophy of decorating for kids and adults. As a follow-up to her best selling book House of Belief, these landmark case studies and colorful photographs inspire all who enter to create rooms for believing and belonging. This ultimate parenting guide provides an activities based process that is as fun as it is healing All kids need a space of their own - a sacred place, where everyday realities like peer pressure, family issues, bullies at school, or low self-esteem cannot penetrate: a place of comfort and creativity that reflects and encourages their own positive intentions and beliefs, values, goals and dreams for life, Heart and Hand Projects throughout the book will allow readers to take a positive idea from the heart - and make something from it with his or her own hands. The affirmative decorating process allows kids and adults to literally see evidence of their own potential in life. These projects also offer healing for all who encounter bullies, negativity and other life challenges. The House of Belief philosophy is one of interior transformation for the home and the soul. It enables kids to create personal sanctuaries where the spirit of the young can joyfully grow, believe, and thrive. As they paint, craft, and create into being their intentions about life within their homes, we come to realize that the real sanctuary they are making is within themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiration for Adult Kids Too!!.......2006-04-07
This book has helped me to express creativity I haven't felt since I was a kid. My friends and I --I am 42 and they are about the same are using the book as therapy. We are meeting 1 time every two weeks and doing the heart & hands projects. It is fun and inspiring. I plan to use the book with my nieces this summer when they visit. It is beautiful and life-changing even for big kids too!!
A wonderfully written self-help process .......2006-01-21
I am a school teacher and counselor. I have read just about everything out there-- looking for solutions for my students. This is the first book that combines truly inspired writing; a simple action process; and the amazing proof of photography worthy of awards. Just looking at the photos motivated me--seeing what was possible. Then, I began to read what it all meant. How the heart issues of the kids became tangible through the creative heart and hand projects. On any basis this is an inspiring book--I even found my own creative desires reemerge. However, the real value is in bringing an action process to the intentions that we all have. Intentions for character, growth, esteem, confidence, and learning.
This is a spiritual process for anyone: combining the best ideas regardless of religous tradition or culture. Kelee Katillac redefines "sacred" as a personal term that can only be stated by ones own creativity and self-styled beliefs. This book gives teachers, parents, and kids a process for making one's own sense of self. And that is what is sacred about the rooms they have created.
Motivational .......2006-01-01
Kids' Sacred Places motivated me as a mother to help find ways to encourage my children to bring out their own creativity. I believe as Kelee does that being creative helps improve a child's self-esteem. This book has great ideas in helping make that special place in your childrens' home personal for them. My husband who is a teacher and coach, is very excited to use some of these "heart and hand" projects in his classroom and also with our two sons.
Building confidence in our children.......2006-01-01
Beyond the amazing rooms beautifully illustrated in Kids' Sacred Places,is the importance of parents doing something with their children. This book shows us how parents can lead their children through simple creative steps, using children's own individual ideas. This process builds confidence. Once children develop their confidence... anything is possible! Kelee's work is proof that these creative actions will help children face their fears, insecurities and peer pressure.
A Father of Four.......2006-01-01
Since my divorce, I don't have much time with my four boys. It is especially hard to talk with them when I have a week between visits. A friend's wife recommended this book. At first, I thought creativity and decorating wasn't for guys. Then, I started reading the inspiring stories of other families with heartache and issues like mine. They used creativity to communicate and get through it. The dads were involved with the heart and hands projects--that are like active therapy. I am not so good at talking but doing creative stuff helps us to break through the silence.
This has helped us a lot. Thank-you.
