Book Description
The Companion Species Manifesto is about the implosion of nature and culture in the joint lives of dogs and people, who are bonded in "significant otherness." In all their historical complexity, Donna Haraway tells us, dogs matter. They are not just surrogates for theory, she says; they are not here just to think with. Neither are they just an alibi for other themes; dogs are fleshly material-semiotic presences in the body of technoscience. They are here to live with. Partners in the crime of human evolution, they are in the garden from the get-go, wily as Coyote. This pamphlet is Haraway's answer to her own Cyborg Manifesto, where the slogan for living on the edge of global war has to be not just "cyborgs for earthly survival" but also, in a more doggish idiom, "shut up and train."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, lively read!!!.......2007-01-04
This is a lovely, engaging short volume. It was just the right mix of theory and very pragmatic discussion to appeal to anyone from the reader who just plain loves dogs ... to those interested in better understanding contemporary scientific discourses.
Highly recommended.
A Social Metaphysics of Humans-in-Relation.......2006-11-07
The previous comment seems to me to miss the plot of Haraway's text. I don't mean to cause offense by saying this, but only to explain why I feel like I should write. The way I read this manifesto, Haraway is working to lay out a social metaphysics that takes relations with radical otherness as integral to and inseparable from any identity. Classical liberalist / modernist theory imagines humans as fundamentally discrete and fungible. This necessarily produces hostility to anything marked as other (e.g., women, dogs, nature, etc.). By drawing off her earlier cyborg theory, Whitehead's process metaphysics, and her own very intimate and concrete relationship with her beloved companion, Haraway is working to construct an intimate and concrete conceptual alternative. This is probably not a text that you would want to wander into without at least some previous (e.g., undergrad) introduction to 3rd wave feminist theory.
Dogs and Humans: The New Pack.......2006-01-22
The traditional contradictions found in relationships between human/nature, nature/machine, art/science, have no place in this work by Donna Haraway. In The Companion Species Manifesto (2003), Haraway spends a fair portion of the book in what seems to be a possible beginning of a future book; in honor of Foucault, she might name it "The Birth of the Kennel" (61). Haraway's distinctively postmodernist style gives voice to those groups who otherwise do not have any; she speaks mostly of dogs in the book but notes that the dog is really a metaphor, "Let the dog stand for all domestic plant and animal species, subjected to human intent in stories of escalating progress or destruction, according to taste" (28). The relationships between human and dog are seen as creating a new history, one that breaks down the traditionally bifurcated social construction among the species.
Humans more and more are defining themselves, their activity, and their lifestyle with dogs (companion species) in mind. This may be truer in Western cultures, but there is a curious "emergent natureculture" emanating in modern society, one that sees human-pet relations as central to one's being. Dogs are not only welcomed at some houses, they are expected, because they participate in the social structure we have created, a pack of humans and dogs with clearly delineated rules of social interaction and an equally clear, although often challenged hierarchy. The animals and humans interact within curious sets of relationships. Dogs and humans are certainly not the same species, no matter how large we define species as, but Haraway's attempt at deconstructing relationships and reconstructing them in terms of intra-specie relations is both creative and difficult to conjure. While this book was a good read, it seems incomplete at times and could use some further fleshing out of the logic and themes.

Not worth it!!!.......2006-08-02
It states potential house-breaking problems but not how to address them. It is not helpfull at all. Out-dated. You're better off getting a cheaper guide book than this one!!!
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.......2006-01-30
I thouht this book was very well written and informative. John Evans, an Englishman is very well versued regarding Cavalier King Charles. He gives you some great ideas that he has used regarding homoeopathic applications that can help keep your Cavalier healthy and not have to run to the Vet for every minor problem. I highly recommend this book to pet and show people alike!
This book is wonderful, full of common sense & warmth........1999-11-26
This is THE book to read if you own a Cav. or are thinking of buying one. The author writes with warmth and a sound knowledge of the breed, gained through years of successful showing and breeding of these lovely dogs. The chapters on breeding and puppy raising are a must for anyone contemplating this avenue. Of particular appeal is the chapter on natural remedies for just about any ailment your dog may suffer from. Whether your Cav. is a pet or a show dog, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it's wonderful.

Bullmastiffs : An Owner's companion.......2002-04-03
I bought this book in the hope that it would give me some insight in to the characteristics and personality of a bullmastiff. This book is good if you re wishing to breed your pet, but not very helpful for general owner information ie personality of your bed, training methods etc.
Sound advice..........2000-03-27
Firstly, I'm not related in any way although I have the same surname. Secondly, I have met the author on two seperatet occassions for a couple of hours and did acquire a puppy from him. So it could be said I'm biased but on the other hand I have a brief insight as to where he's coming from. Well, now to the book. It covers all aspects of ownership that one would need to know - from general ownership to preparing to enter shows. Aswell as the history of the breed and possible origins. The book is written in a way that explains 'why things are' and not just that 'they are', especially in regard to how your dog is built. I have read other Bully books and found they don't all cover those essentially daily ownership issues. This would be a must have on your bookshelf to anyone that is really serious about owning this type of dog. After reading it you'll probably find it'll turn into a starting reference for many enquires you may have. In summary: Readable, sound, practicle and written by someone whose dedicated decades to the breed. Buy it!

Book Description
Witness the true definition of unconditional love revealed in the remarkable stories featured in -LOVE HEELS-Tales From Canine Companions for Independence, a beautifully designed and illustrated book celebrating people and dogs. The organization, Canine Companions For Independence (CCI) is a not-for-profit organization that -- with the help of so many volunteers-- breeds, raises, trains, and then places it's exceptional canine graduates with disabled children and adults who are in need of their assistance. Then a very special bond between human and canine companion is established.
The stories and photos in LOVE HEELS bring the Canine Companions for Independence experience to life for the reader and introduces you to many of the thousands of selfless volunteers who make up the breeders, raisers, and trainers of these amazing dogs. From the joyful hours when litters are born, through the playful months of puppyhood, these team members cherish their canine charges until the day they tearfully, yet proudly, pass them on to those who need them most. It is their dedication to helping others and overwhelming love for the puppies that makes it possible for hundreds of people with disabilities to live more independent lives and enjoy an enhanced quality of life.
Then we meet the people for whom CCI was created the "human partners" the children and adults with physical disabilitiesfor whom performing everyday tasks seemed impossible
until they meet their "canine companion." These courageous and determined individuals develop an incredible bond with their new dogs, which not only brings them a great deal of assistance in daily living (the dogs respond to at least 50 commands), but friendship, joy, and an amazing amount of unconditional love. Being able to take charge of their lives, instead of being taken care of, allows the disabled to reach beyond their limitations to be the best they can be. LOVE HEELS is an inspirational and motivational book about courage and love of the softest and fuzziest kind!
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of LOVE HEELS will go to Canine Companions for Independence.

Heart warmer.......2007-07-29
What a wonderful organization...stories to touch hearts of all ages. We are currently raising a puppy for CCI and the experiences of the authors are especially meaningful.
Beautiful pictures and touching stories.......2005-02-03
This book makes a great gift. It is a very nice looking book at a good price. The pictures are as touching as the stories. If you love dogs or just want to read stories about love and courage this is a "must have" book.
Love Heels: Tales From Canine Companions for Independence.......2004-02-17
Oh, wow! I highly recommend this book. I have been a puppy raiser for CCI since 1988, and this book absolutely captures the heart and soul of this wonderful organization. I have lived the puppy-raising part twelve times, so I especially appreciate the breeder-caretaker and graduate stories. The book not only reinforces the specialness of the bond between humans and dogs, but also gives you insight into how the lives of those who receive these awesome animals are forever changed. Buy it!
Beautiful and Profound.......2004-01-30
This is a most wonderful book that captures that magical and intangible thing that makes the relationship between humans and dogs so deep. My partner lost her service dog this past year and we don't know when she will be able to get another. This book reminded us that other people know what that special connection is, too. I recommend it with complete enthusiasm.

Great Pictures and Incredible Stories........2004-01-15
Simply AWESOME. One of the best books I have ever owned. From the cover art, the jacket art and the contents; this book is a must for every dog lover.
I must warn you this book will make you cry and be greatful every day for the blessings in your life. For the dog owner (I have two 14 year old Goldens and a 8 year old Lab) it makes you want to take on the challenge of helping this great cause.
I purchase many books through Amazon, however; I purchased this one directly from the www.caninecompanions.org so that they would receive a greater chunk of the change. I have no conection to them though. YET!
Do yourself and someone less fortunate than yourself that you have never met a great big favor and buy this book. I promise that you will be glad that you did.

Not very helpful for the average new dog owner.......2004-02-29
The focus of the book seems to be on selecting and breeding show dogs, rather than on a family pet. There are sections that apply to the average collie-owner, but not enough to feel that I want to go and buy this book. In addition the advice is a little outdated (1990) and the author is British and uses words like "fortnight" that make it a slightly odd read.

Book Description
This all-in-one CD-ROM allows users to watch master quilter Jinny Beyer demonstrate hand piecing techniques and practice right alongside her. Video sequences, accessed through the Web browser, demonstrate precise hand movements for eight key techniques, from threading a needle to piecing an eight-pointed star. To make each skill easier still, step-by-step directions are a mouse click away, with dozens of detailed color photographs. Easy to navigate and compatible for PC or Mac, this CD includes a complete pattern for an original Jinny Beyer quilt.
Customer Reviews:
Brief demonstration by a well known and highly accomplished quilter.......2007-10-11
On the plus side, you get to see Jinny Beyer hand piece using the running stitch. On the minus side, this is not a DVD, but rather a CD for viewing on the computer. There are only 6 videos, rather short, approx. 5 minutes each. They open in a small window, approx. 4" by 4". You can enlarge the video but the viewing quality declines. Also, the camera doesn't zoom in for details. There is alot of instruction found in her book that does not get discussed in the videos, so you'll want both if you are not familiar with piecing. I had hoped there might be a segment on hand quilting, which the author is also famous for, but nothing on that topic was covered, which was unfortunate, and I thought, a lost opportunity. If you can only buy one, I recommend the book.
Jinny is the Master.......2007-08-04
Jinny Beyer is the master of hand quilting. I find myself watching the videos over and over and over and over while I'm hand piecing. Are my hands just like hers? Where is her thimble pushing from? It's a great resource. Her book on hand piecing is also wonderful.

Hand quilting.......2007-05-28
Iam extremely happy with this book, i have found it is so easy to read and it is very easy to understand what jinny beyer is trying to convey unlike a lot of quilting books.I was also very satisfied with the whole Amazon experience. As this was my first experience with internet shopping i was a bit nervous about the whole thing. Happily it was a great experience and hopefully the first of many.
Hand quilting start to finish.......2007-05-12
I wanted to teach a class on piecing by hand and since I generally hand quilt but piece by machine I wanted to learn the real way it should be done. Of course this is the right book for learning the technique. Jinny Beyer is a master and really does an excellent job instructing in this book.
Hand Piecing with Jinny Beyer.......2006-07-13
Top quality - which is what you would expect form Jinny Beyer. Top price - which you expect from her too. By time you buy the book, the CD and the tool you are out a bundle of cash that I would rather spend on fabric. But the 3 products compliment each other, the instructions are clear, the tool has the needed markings, the CD shows Ms Beyer in action. I'm slowly getting the hang of it and am pleased with the results. I just wish there was a package with all 3 (at a package price).

Excellent Little "Field Guide" Book .......2007-05-07
Great for anyone planning to visit Southwest to view native cacti. Not a gardening book, so do not expect growing information. If you love the desert, just 5 minutes of reading this book over coffee takes you there....
Book Description
Bringing Up Kids Without Tearing Them Down is packed with real life examples and the tools parents need to underwrite their kids' lives with a solid sense of self-worth and confidence. Often the very things parents do to develop self-esteem in their children actually does just the opposite-Dr. Leman helps parents avoid that.
Some of the topics addressed are "Oh no, I told myself I would never do that to my kids," "The crucial difference between praise and encouragement," and "How to raise responsible children." Readers will learn to develop a strategy of discipline that works in any family with any child and how to get the best behavior from each child. At the end of each chapter, readers will find steps to follow in their own families, plus self-evaluating questions that help them gain insight into their own parenting style. There is also a question-and-answer section to quickly reference specific problem areas.

See the World from the Feelings of your Child.......2006-01-01
Dr. Leman helped me see the possible feelings and thoughts that my children may be having in certain situations. He not only writes from the perspective of the parents, but also from the children. He provides examples of how parents typically respond and then provides alternatives that are more healthy and relationship-building. No matter what your situation, children need love, an understanding of their feelings, consistency and boundaries. He does a good job at encouraging these. He's a humorous writer and is easy to read. It's a great book.
Excellent parenting tool.......2005-11-08
Provides great alternatives and ideas for disciplining and encouraging children of all ages. Teaches loving parenting with a wonderful system of accountability for both children and parents alike. Would recommend this book for every conscientious parent.
Very good direction in leading your child to success........2005-10-03
Good pointers for parents in overcoming the difficult challenges in parenthood.
pie in the sky .......2004-11-20
Dr. Leman is a typical writer who can only think within his own personal world. He has no concept of what life is like for those of us who have a spouse who is not like Dr. Leman, nothing at all like him. These idealistic ideas of Dr. Leman's are just so much fluff. Dr. Leman thinks everyone lives in his wonderful world. Shame on him for taking the money from hard working people who just want to do their best to raise their children inspite of all the obstacles in their own households.
