Book Description
In the animal world, the easiest way to avoid being eaten is to avoid being seen. What are Camouflage and Mimicry? examines animals that use unique colorization and patterns to avoid predators-or to sneak up on prey! Some are virtually impossible to see.
Book Description
During roughly 400 million years on this planet, one million species of insects have developed with a great diversity of shape and color to protect them from predators.
Bruce Purser spent years traveling through tropical forests studying insects and photographing their ongoing quest for survival as they blended into tree trunks and imitated sticks, leaves, other bugs, and even bird droppings. Taken in exotic locales including French Guyana, the Peruvian Amazon, Malaysia, Kenya, Morocco, and Venezuela, his dazzling photographs are accompanied by thoughtful text as he traces the insects' efforts to hide from or scare off their predators.
In this charming and informative book:
Explore the dangerous and little-known world of insects
Experience exotic tropic tours
Discover animal behavior in lively and understandable language
Find out how a good disguise or a good impersonation can make the difference between life and death in the animal world
Stunning color photographs reveal insect secrets that we would never get a chance to observe ourselves: such as a harmless moth that looks exactly like a stinging wasp or an inoffensive butterfly that's protected from predators because its coloring is almost identical to that of a highly poisonous variety.

Jungle Bugs.......2006-01-30
For those who like to look at photos of real-life bugs up close and in their environment, this is the book for you. The pictures are amazing. There are more photos of camouflage and mimicry than in any other book of its kind that I've looked at--and I've looked at many! It's appropriate for all ages because it contains good information, but it is also worth it just for the pictures!

What are Camouflage and Mimicry? (The Science of Living Things)
ASIN: 0226641880 |
Book Description
Many organisms, to avoid being noticed, combine color and shape to create elaborate and highly effective disguises. Some have evolved uncanny likenesses to such elements of their environment as leaves and rocks. Others use color and shape in more spectacular displays simply to frighten a predator or to warn that they are poisonous. In turn, and to complicate matters for their enemies, some edible animals have evolved a striking likeness to poisonous animals that use color as a warning. Though such camouflage and mimicry is most widely and brilliantly evident among the insects—where sometimes only the experienced naturalist can see through the deception—it has also evolved in plants and several groups of vertebrates, including birds, snakes, and salamanders.
Camouflage and Mimicry describes the remarkably varied attempts of species to deceive their predators and prey. It illustrates a group of strategies which help to increase an individual's chances of survival.
Book Description
With photographs of remarkable clarity and an absorbing, informative text, this book displays and describes numerous examples of animals camouflaging themselves. "Strongly recommended."--Booklist. "Solid information in a colorful, appealing, and dramatic package."--Kirkus.

Colors for survival.......2007-06-11
Our world is filled with remarkable examples of camouflage in nature. In page after page of stunning photographs, Colors for Survival captures the abilities of animals to mimic their environment and thus avoid detection by predators or prey. In many of the photographs, the creature-be it insect, fish, bird or mammal-blends so perfectly with the background on which it is resting that it is difficult to spot at first glance. Marco Ferrari's fascinating text explains the ways in which animals use color-for mimicry and camouflage, to warn their enemies, and to attract mates, this assuring the survival of the species.
An exceptional book to share with children, Colors for Survival will inspire readers to explore the natural world.

Customer Reviews:
Great N Scale Starter Book.......2007-05-01
After looking on-line for many different layouts and ideas for my first N Scale display I came across this book and am now very pleased I did. This book, (although somewhat outdated on some techniques and items listed) does an outstanding job of giving a beginner step by step instructions on creating a very enjoyable layout that will give you plenty of room to grow or start slow. I just started building this layout and will have this book by my side step by step. I will also be picking up some other books to compliment this one to help with the new DCC wiring and other modeling techniques that are out there today to make this hobby enjoyable. Thanks to this book it is going to be a wonderful display for our family.
Grossly out of Date & Inconsistent.......2007-01-18
While maybe at one time this book used to be valid today it is grossly out of date and there are multiple inconsistentsies in the first several chapters that would not make this a great 'how to' and a great beginners book anymore.
The electrical section fails the current check, the couplers they recommend haven't been made by the company mentioned in over 15 years, and many other things.
THE book to have if you're thinking about starting a layout.......2006-11-15
If you've wanted to start a realistic-looking n-scale railroad layout (think beyond just setting up a loop to run around the Christmas tree), and aren't sure where to start or what it will involve, this is the perfect book. It's stuffed full of helpful pictures, detailed walkthroughs and examples of products to buy if you really really like the way they did a particular section.
The book covers the development of layout, starting out with minimal scenery and a single loop. It then adds a service yard... and a downtown area... and so on. Before you spend dollar one on track, rolling stock or even a piece of lumber, buy and read this book.
N Scale Model Railroad That Grows.......2006-04-01
Excellent for beginners. Instructions permit the average person to create their own idea of a railroad. The instructions can be modified to create any layout.
Great book for beginners.......2005-01-17
For almost a year I was trying to figure out how to get started with what I wanted to do. I had a bunch of track, some rolling stock, and the benchwork -- but didn't know where to go next. This book has really helped, I use it so often as a reference as I go, that it is bent from where I hold it. The part on wiring was great -- not super in depth, but showed me exactly what I needed to know to wire the block, switches, and power. Pictures & illustrations are great and the text is easy to follow.
My only complaint is I think they should have a small section at the end that shows the final product from all angles to see what they built.

"A compelling text you will refer to over and over again."--Jane Browning, Executive Director, Learning Disabilities Association of America
"An excellent guide for parents... replete with concrete examples and information."--Dr. James Garbarino, author of Lost Boys and Parents Under Siege
Of the estimated 10 million U.S. students who struggle with learning to read, the vast majority are boys. Research shows that if these children do not "close the gap" before they finish third grade, they are likely to remain functionally illiterate throughout their lives. See Johnny Read! is the first book to offer practical, proven, and timely ways for parents to help their boys with this critical skill.
Written by an expert teacher and educational consultant, this much-needed book answers essential questions, including:
- When does a reading delay become a reading problem ?
- How, when, and where should I look for tutoring ?
- How can I get the best help from the school ?
- How can my son avoid (or overcome)the "Bad Boy" label ?
- How can I help my son learn to read--and enjoy reading--at home ?

gives a great tip.......2006-04-28
I bought a few books to help me teach my son and I liked this one best because it gives a very good tip to help me remember all the information teachers and books give. The tip is "SPRint". To help a child SPRint forward he needs to practise some Sight words (like "who", that you can't sound out) a lot of Phonics and tons of low-stress Reading at his level -the SPR in "SPRint'. A lot of books tell you sight words aren't good and only phonics matter but in my experience my son needs both plus lots of happy reading. I would highly recommend this book.
great little book.......2005-07-29
This is the only book I have found that specifically focuses on boys' reading. I could see parts of my son's life in the real life stories and was able to use the practical activities. Great book.
I don't agree with these methods at all.......2005-06-14
I ordered a few books on how to help a child read, this was one of them. This book contradicts the info I gathered from my other sources (other sources made more sense), the format wasn't organized well, even if I did want to try Woods' methods, where would I start? I do not believe that a failing child needs to be sat down for a whole hour each day and be made to suffer through more instruction and homework at home! And out of nowhere, there is a paragraph on punishment...right after saying that praise is key, she says you may need to use punishment. For what, not being able to read? I didn't have the strength to muster on, this book was not a good resource, and boring to slog through. [...]
Easy to reference, well-written.......2004-07-16
As a teacher, I have recommended this book to several parents who want to better understand their son's learning needs. Tracey's book is easy to grasp, yet full of practical and useful information to help parents support their child's journey towards reading. I appreciate her positive, caring attitude towards busy boys!
A practical text that reads like a talk with a friend.......2004-02-20
The title reflects the positive nature of this helpful text by a reading consultant. Follow her suggestions and you'll delight in seeing Johnny read. Practical suggesting include details about teaching sight words and phonics, working effectively with the schools, doing your own tutoring or selecting a tutor, dealing with behavior, and more.
I highly recommend using this book. I also highly recommend practicing sight words with Betsy B Lee's Funny Dolch Word Books and her book of Dolch horse stories, Albert.
