ABC's? See What?.......2007-09-14
I have recently purchased 5 or 6 books on serging and this is my least favorite. I can't get past the hand written notes all over the pages pointing at drawings of different stitches and drawings of sergers being threaded. For someone who is new to serging like myself all this scribbling looks just like that, scribbling. I'm not going to comment on the content of the book, it may be informative, but if I don't find it interesting to look at guess what? I'm not going to open it to read what it says. Of the 5 or 6 books I own I want to highly recommend two for those of you out there wanting to learn how to serge. And maybe even enjoy doing it! You have to thread the machine to use it. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Just thread it one at a time. In the order your manual tells you to. Use colors that are easy to tell apart at first. The best book to help you and keep you going in my opinion is "The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide, by Naomi Baker, Gail Brown, and Cindy Kacynski. You can read my review on it if you're interested. The second book which is over my beginners head, but still helpful and one I can grow into is, "Serger Secrets: High Fashion Techniques For Creating Great Looking Clothes".
Takes the fear away!.......2007-05-13
In under 30 minutes, I learned how to properly thread my serger, adjust tension, and begin serging like a pro! I have so much more confidence in my abilities! I was so terrified of my machine that I ignored it for an entire year. This book has made me realize that I could have done so well from the very beginning had I owned this book then. The troubleshooting tips and helpful diagrams make it so easy to follow.
I'm so excited to play with my machine now!
Excellent resource for beginning sergers.......2007-01-09
This was money well spent. A serger is so different from a standard sewing machine that a beginner needs more help than the serger manual provides. If you can't take classes, this guide will help.
ABC's of Serging.......2005-11-06
Great book for both the novice and the experienced serger. The book has clear drawings and down to earth explanations on threading your serger, serging anything from cuffs, eleastic, shirring, french seams and lettuce edges. The book explains the importance on tension and little tricks for adjusting the same. You should not be without it if you are new to serging.
ABC's of Serging: A Complete Guide to Serger Sewing Basics.......2005-10-10
The book is great!! I didn't know anything about serging and my serger came with very few instructions. I feel like I can use my serger now with confidence. Wonderful teaching tool!! Better than taking a class.

Courtyards: Intimate Outdoor Spaces presents a pictorial survey of an increasingly popular part of indoor/outdoor design-the courtyard. Today's architects and designers are creating beautifully private indoor/outdoor spaces amidst escalating urban development.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2006-08-25
This book was recommended as a guide to developing sculpture gardens and outdoor living spaces. It is not. The photographs appear to be very dated as are the subject courtyards. It is a dull, unispired book.
A rare look at the function, definition and purpose of a courtyard.......2006-01-05
Douglas Keister's Courtyards: Intimate Outdoor Spaces takes a rare look at the function, definition and purpose of a courtyard surveying courtyards around the world which grace both home and public establishment. Courtyards can be adapted to both large and small spaces, vary in greenery, stonework, and lighting, and are perfect additions for homeowners seeking to remodel with style. Turn a backyard into a courtyard setting or consider many options through the phone color exhibition of photographer Keister, paired with text which considers design options and successful examples.
What a Beautiful Book.......2005-10-01
The author has definitely done his homework. We are in the process of creating a courtyard in our back yard after having added a sunroom this past season. Our theme has been "New Orleans" for the sunroom ... even though we live in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we have visited New Orleans many times and consider it our "home away from home". There are courtyards from New Orleans featured in this book - but many from other places as well. Whatever you are looking for in courtyard ideas, you will find it here.
Book Description
A renowned garden designer tells how he and his wife built their garden, imparting countless valuable lessons learned.
Garden and landscape designer Gordon Hayward and his wife, Mary, take the measure of their home gardenin process for more than twenty yearsand tell readers how to make their own gardens welcoming and personal, truly a reflection of their needs and dreams. As the Haywards point out, "successful gardens grow naturally out of their owners; great garden design is honest, authentic, and unself-conscious." Gordon explains how aspects of his and Mary's lives are woven into their garden, but also how those aspects remain firmly fixed in universal design principles that apply to every garden. With the practical advice and achievable aims that make his other books so rewarding, Hayward lets readers in on the secrets that make his garden outstanding.
Almost 200 stunning photographs specially commissioned for the book show key garden views in all four seasons, giving readers a rare look at a year in a garden. Before-and-after shots, detailed garden maps, and plant lists are included.
Customer Reviews:
An intimate view of garden design.......2005-08-02
This excellent book allows the reader to get inside the head of a great garden designer. It follows the design problems and solutions the Haywards thought out over 20 years in their Vermont garden. It's full of ideas of how to add structure, vistas, destinations, and emotions to any garden design.
Book Description
An intimate garden is just right for those who want welcoming outdoor spaces that smoothly integrate home and backyard, but are simply too busy for larger projects. From Brooklyn Botanical Garden guides, which the New York Times Book Review called "a brilliant collection of gardening books," comes wonderfully expert design, decoration, and cultivation advice for any region. Two esteemed, award-winning authors reveal how to get started; figure out the best shape for the space; work to the correct scale and proportion; add walls, fences, trellises, and hedges; put in terraces and decks; and select excellent trees, shrubs, and perennials. A plant encyclopedia covers all hardiness zones.

Good plantings book, but short on design...........2005-03-27
INTIMATE GARDENS by Burrell and Hardiman provides tips for the gardener with a small urban space or a larger ex-urban space in need of humanizing. These days, most gardeners are not faced with the enviable task of creating intimate spaces in an otherwise vast, undifferentiated but potential garden area. Nevertheless, we may dream of someday owning such a spread and being faced with this challenge. In the meantime, we can take many of the authors suggestions regarding plant selections for small spaces to heart.
Most of this short Brooklyn Botanic Garden monograph is dedicated to "Furnishing an Intimate Garden" a large section which discusses trees and shrubs, as well as perennials, vines, and groundcovers.
The authors include an abbreviated variant of the latest USDA zone hardiness map-showing undifferentiated or collapsed growing zones (Zone 5, 6, etc. not 5A, 5B, etc.) and state boundaries. However the illustrations (such as the map) and the gardens and plant photos are mostly beautiful.
Although the back cover suggests this book covers garden design, very few designs for intimate garden spaces are discussed or even pictured (not a single layout). A more comprehensive discussion about the design of intimate garden spaces, can be found in THE OUTDOOR ROOM by David Stevens so if you own that old book, this one does not update it. The Stevens book remains relatively pricey, so you may want to visit your library to check it out. However, Stevens includes plenty of actual garden design layouts, and one or two will probably appeal to you. The Stevens book is irritatingly short on information about plant material, however, so not adequate for the task of creating intimate garden spaces.
You will want to buy the Burrell and Hardiman book for the discussion of plant materials, but see also - Burrell's `Perennial Combinations' which does include some garden designs-although limited to perennials.

Book Description
TABLETOP GARDENS is a uniquely imaginative approach to gardening. Written by seasoned garden writer Rosemary McCreary and sumptuously photographed by William Holt, TABLETOP GARDENS stands apart - with exquisitely beautiful photographs of miniature indoor gardens, each planted in simple containers and shot in natural light.
The 40 designs offer many ideas for choosing a personal style and getting started - plants under glass, in bowls and trays, and even in water environments. Earthy, rich-green mosses in a glass globe. A burst of forced bulbs for spring. The textured foliage of a fern garden in an antique glass case. A living sculpture of twisted stems. A garden mosaic of creeping mint. It's the pleasure of creating a small Eden and enjoying it no matter what the season - in a cozy corner of a room, or on a windowsill splashed with sunlight. Each project includes complete advice on the materials needed and step-by-step information on how to create the garden. Along with providing design advice, TABLETOP GARDENS gives information on the culture and maintenance of each garden, how to place it where it will prosper, and how to keep it thriving. Popular, easy-to-grow herbs, grasses, bulbs, water plants, vines, and miniature trees are naturals for tabletop gardening. Color photographs show projects in a variety of room settings, with ideas for suitable containers and advice on how to group and style plants for the best effect.

Stunning!.......2004-08-31
I love houseplants and the pictures in this book are a great inspiration to try new arrangements with my plants.
Striking, simple and complete.......2004-03-04
This striking book is an excellent choice for those of you who simply can't stop gardening, no matter what the season or location. While apartment dwellers will especially benefit from the tabletop gardens, everyone could find a place in their home for these beautiful examples. Everything from dry gardens to bogs is covered. Each example includes information on lighting, water, temperature requirements and average life span.
I have never had much success with indoor plants, but I am tempted to try out a few of these, including the ones growing simple grasses in pretty containers.
A beautiful and practical book for enhancing your home!.......2003-08-06
I purchased this book several months ago and have been thrilled with it's beautiful photography, clear instruction and easy (yet clever) ideas for gardening indoors. My home is not set up for big outdoor gardens, so these small container and tabletop gardens have been a godsend! I had never thought of decorating my kitchen and bathrooms with live plantings, and wow, what an improvement! I am buying copies for my friends and family. This makes a wonderful housewarming gift. Don't miss it!
Beautiful design and practical.......2003-07-11
Received this as a gift and found it so well written and photographed that I ended up buying a few as gifts for others. Fabulous book design and layout. Beautiful pictures. Great container ideas and very clear information for ongoing care. The grass garden section was especially neat. The author suggests new takes on indoor gardens such as using mini primroses in a flat basket. I've always planted them outdoors but never imagined how nice they would look inside the house.
Nothing new here........2003-06-30
This is a very narrow topic. By definition these are gardens that are very limited in size and scope. Having said that, i was still very disappointed in this book. It doesn't take much shopping around, thumbing through other books and checking the Internet to find dozens of good ideas for tabletop gardens. And any garden writer worth her (or his) salt can come up with "how to do it" and "plants to choose" text to make the ideas a practicality. So why the paucity of ideas? Why are we treated, on pages 52 and 53, to a two-page close-up of gravel?
Don't waste any time on this very ordinary book about ordinary plants in ordinary containers.

High-life houses for an aristocrat........2000-05-17
Elton John is an aristocrat, not only because the Queen said so. He demonstrates this in every day life, in the way he admits his weaknesses, in his involvement for beautiful causes. His house on French Riviera is a jewell. It's almost "too much". But "too much" is never enough for Elton. Thanks to the great pictures from this book you will discover a yellow castle between blue sky, deep blue sea and green grass. White structure of the house creates a contrast with blue, green and yellow. These colours could have been chosen by David Hockney. Original style of this house was respected. Flowers are every where. Furniture is on line with the overall "villegiature" style. Don't dream "too much", this "Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat" life-style has a price. But who talked about money, here? Not Elton, for sure. This is, again, a demonstration of the noble qualities of that man. Never in the whole book, you will find any decoration detail that could make you think it is here to impress people or to demonstrate power. What a paradox! this modern excentric, in the tradition on XVIIIth century english excentricity, never looks arrogant. None of his crazy demonstrations of "luxe" make you feel bad. The Atlanta house is more interesting because of the beautiful furniture and made to order closets for collections of ... everything. This book is a tribute to pleasure, good taste (yes!) and high-life. I learned this word from Johnny Weissmuller in Acapulco (pie de la cuesta beach), just before he died. I think it is quite appropriate to describe what these houses are made for.
Cool Book.......2000-04-09
This book has awesome pictures of Elton John's homes, it focuses on the flowers in his houses. This book would be great to put on a coffe table, and a must for an Elton fan. I highly recommend it!
Beautiful coffee-table book........1999-04-16
Excellent pictorial of an extravagant livestyle! Hard to belive, though, that there is a gross misprint on page 16-- the lyrics from "Your Song" are attributed to "Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters"! Oops!
My New Favorite!.......1999-04-15
Wow ... "amazing" is the best word I can come up with! I have been looking at decorating books for about a year since I bought my dream house. I stumbled upon this book, and have since bought copies for my Mom, my in-laws, my best friend, my gardeners, my designer, ...! I guess I am now their best customer! I plan to give a copy to my designer and say "Here, do this!"
Need I say more?

Book Description
One of your children is easy-going. The other oneâs a challenge every single day. This book helps parents and teachers understand that temperament isnât good or badâ"itâs just the way we are. Recommended by Washington Post parenting columnist Marguerite Kelly, "Temperament Tools" explains young children.
New research shows that children are different from the day theyâre bornâ"and their temperaments stay different no matter how theyâre parented. But your childrenâs behavior does reflect their inborn traits; once you understand those traits, youâll be better prepared to handle behavior. Written specifically to help with young children, "Temperament Tools" explains:
⢠Whatâs normal for your child;
⢠How you can manage challenging behavior and attitudes;
⢠How you can teach your child to cope with his or her behavior; and
⢠How all of you can avoid blaming and feeling guilty.

HOMESCHOOLING MOM OF THREE.......2005-05-27
This is a book I think all parents and grandparents should read. I am ordering two and giving them to my kids grandparents.
I was truly amazed at how easily all 3 of my kids each fit into a different temperamental category listed in the book.
As a homeschooling mom for 6 years I truly know my kids but have found it hard for others ( especially grandparents) to understand that some things are just part of who they are. I have looked at and bought many books trying to explain this to my family. This is the best!!
I keep a copy in my bag and tell all of my friends about it when they are having issues with their children.
This book may seem to be directed towards very young children when you first look at it but our oldest is 10 and I find it to be helpful with him too.
A pediatrician's perspective.......2001-05-27
This remarkable, engaging little book can save you and your children from years of tears. It can protect you from unnecessary frustration, struggle, anger, and sadness, and can help you and the children you love grow in understanding and self-esteem. Solidly rooted in almost fifty years of published research and clinical experience, Temperament Tools shows readers, with insight and skill, how to understand and work with children's inborn traits.
Different children react differently to the world around them from the very start, and their inborn temperament traits usually persist. Active babies are likely to become active toddlers and preschoolers. The same is true, too, for babies who are sensitive, or persistent, or resistant to change, or easy to soothe. On the basis of their own extensive professional experience, authors Helen Neville and Diane Clark Johnson help readers assess children's temperament traits, understand the interactions between children's and parents' patterns of behavior, and learn how to provide the loving structure and support that can prevent challenges from becoming catastrophes. Ultimately, they provide practical, detailed, and accessible guidance for us in our efforts to help the children we care about learn to love, know, and respect themselves and others.
As a pediatrician working with parents, professionals, and friends to protect children's well-being during and after divorce, I draw freely and often from the material presented in Temperament Tools. As a professional or non-professional, you can expect heartfelt thanks from the relatives, teachers, and pediatricians to whom you give copies of this book. Beyond that, you can take pleasure in knowing how much you're helping the children whose lives they touch.

This book is right on the money!.......1999-11-01
I stumbled across this book at my library, and it has helped me understand my daughter more than any other book. The practical explanations of temperament traits are excellent. But better yet are the "temperamental" descriptions of the different children--my daughter is Tiganda Tiger 100 %! My husband and I have used many of the techniques recommended for dealing with our daughter and found them to be very successful. I have become such a convert that I am now teaching temperament traits to my students in middle school.
My child's behavior made more sense after reading this book........1999-05-02
Easy to read guide to understanding my child. It has been helpful when working with other children in a professional way. Can highly recommend it to parents and prfessionals. This book gives new insight into how a child ticks.
