Book Description
In New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Peters's eagerly anticipated Amelia Peabody adventure, the Emerson clan is a hairsbreadth away from unearthing the legendary site they've been searching for. But a sinister plot and a dark family secret stand in the way of their ultimate ambition -- and threaten to change things forever. . . .
Convinced that the tomb of the little-known king Tutankhamon lies somewhere in the Valley of the Kings, Egyptologist Radcliffe Emerson and his wife, Amelia Peabody, seem to have hit a wall. Emerson has tried desperately to persuade Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter to relinquish their digging rights. But Emerson's trickery has backfired, and his insistent interest in the site has made his rivals all the more determined to keep the Emerson clan away.
The family returns to Luxor and watches from the sidelines as Carter and Carnarvon "discover" King Tut's tomb. But before their own excavation can get underway, Emerson and his son, Ramses, find themselves lured into a trap by a strange group of villains demanding "Where is he?" The Emersons embark on a quest to uncover who "he" is and why "he" must be found, only to discover the answer is uncomfortably close to home. Now Amelia must find a way to protect her family -- and perhaps even her would-be nemesis -- from the forces that will stop at nothing to succeed in the nefarious plot that threatens the peace of the entire region.
Filled with heart-stopping suspense, and Amelia Peabody's trademark wit and wisdom, Tomb of the Golden Bird is the latest thrilling installment from the beloved "Grand Dame of historical mystery" (Washington Post).

In New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Peters's most eagerly anticipated Amelia Peabody adventure to date, the incomparable Emerson clan is a hairbreadth away from unearthing the legendary site they've been searching for. But a sinister plot and a dark family secret stand in the way of their ultimate ambition -- and threaten to change things forever. . . .
Tomb of the Golden Bird
Convinced that the tomb of the little-known king Tutankhamon lies somewhere in the Valley of the Kings, eminent Egyptologist Radcliffe Emerson and his intrepid wife, Amelia Peabody, seem to have hit a wall. Having been banned forever from the East Valley, Emerson, against Amelia's advice, has tried desperately to persuade Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter to relinquish their digging rights. But Emerson's trickery has backfired, and his insistent interest in the site has made his rivals all the more determined to keep the Emerson clan away.
Powerless to intervene but determined to stay close to the unattainable tomb, the family returns to Luxor and prepares to continue their dig in the less promising West Valley -- and to watch from the sidelines as Carter and Carnarvon ""discover"" the greatest Egyptian treasure of all time: King Tut's tomb. But before their own excavation can get underway, Emerson and his son, Ramses, find themselves lured into a trap by a strange group of villains ominously demanding ""Where is he?"" Driven by distress -- and, of course, Amelia's insatiable curiosity -- the Emersons embark on a quest to uncover who ""he"" is and why ""he"" must be found, only to discover that the answer is uncomfortably close to home. Now Amelia must find a way to protect her family -- and perhaps even her would-be nemesis -- from the sinister forces that will stop at nothing to succeed in the nefarious plot that threatens the peace of the entire region.
Filled with heart-stopping suspense, political intrigue, and Amelia Peabody's trademark wit and wisdom, Tomb of the Golden Bird is the latest thrilling installment from the renowned and beloved ""grande dame of historical mystery"" (Washington Post).

Customer Reviews:
oh dear!.......2007-07-20
This is the first Amelia Peabody mystery I have read and it will definitely be the last. What a bore! The character development seemed stifled, perhaps because of the very large number of them that filled space for no apparent reason. I found no suspense, no mystery, just a vague hope with each turning page that something might improve. Instead this is the first novel which I found myself constantly looking at my watch to see if I had endured enough. I suppose after 17 other stories, the rest of the series must be at least reasonable, but this one has convinced me not to attempt to find out.
Another great book from Elizabeth Peters.......2007-06-11
I always look forward to a new book from this author and this one did not disappoint. Although it did not have as much of a mystery attached it as some of the others, the story about finding King Tut's tomb as told from the perspective of someone living in that time period was really interesting. It is also fun to catch up on the lives of the Peabody family and friends.
Tomb of the Golden Bird (Amelia Peabody Mysteries).......2007-05-17
This is a great book!! Ms. Peters has kept me spellbound for the whole series of Amelia Peabody books. Her characters are well-developed and very enjoyable.
The saga continues.......2007-04-03
Ms Peters continues to weave real historical events into her stories. Her characters are a delight. Even as an archaeologist, she almost makes me believe Peabody & Emerson were actual players. I await each edition of the saga.
AS GOOD AS IT GETS.......2006-10-19
I see there are some 4.5 stars on this book. I will take issue with that. This series has its ups and downs, but the worst is better than any other book I have read.(not including Jane Austen who is the best ever)This book, as all her other Peabody books, makes me laugh out loud! When I am reading in bed, my husband knows I am reading about Amelia and Emerson. That's the best I can say about any book. She never kills off the people I love.(even their reis, Abdul 'lives'.)If I want reality I can watch the news. A happy ending and escapism is what I want! Thank you thank you thank you...........

A good book, but..........2005-01-27
I have the first edition book from 1986, maybe the book changed since. The photos are black and white, not very useful ! We can't really agree with his identification of birds : colors are essential to identify a bird !
It is the only mistake, but a very bad one.
A NICE AND USEFUL STUDY ON EGYPTIAN BIRDS.......2000-11-17
This rather expensive (but worthy) book aims to be an all-covering research on all of the bird-species existing at the times of the Pharaohs. The author have had recourse to every representation and hieroglyphic sign, in order to provide good-grounded identification with present-day nomenclature. But he has not limited himself to that; he also has researched in the role that birds played in ancient Egyptian religion and everyday life. Moreover, he has provided us with a systematic list of modern Egyptian birds, their Arabic names and even with a comparison between their present range with that in ancient times. Last, but not the least: it is profusely illustrated, so as to be a joy for the eyes. A very valuable manual, both for "birds-enthusiasts", general reader and students/professionals of ancient Egypt.

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive reference book on the birds of Egypt. It draws on an extensive body of literature and unpublished reports, and is intended for professional ornithologists, bird-watchers, or anyone interested in the natural history of Egypt. Introductory sections discuss the history of Egyptian ornithology, geography, biotic communities, hunting, conservation, and changes in the environment. The main body of the text describes the breeding distributions and seasons, movements, and migratory routes of the 421 species known from the country. The book is illustrated by range maps of most of the breeding species, numerous maps of the origins of Eurasian migrants occurring in Egypt, and six paintings. Official and regional Egyptian bird names are published for the first time both in Arabic script and transliterated form. A gazetteer of all localities mentioned in the text, an extensive bibliography, and indexes are included. This is certain to remain the standard reference work on the birds of Egypt for some time.

Book Description
For four decades, from 1916 to 1958, family gatherings at the Batrakani household are an excuse to gossip, eat molokhiya, and tell endless stories.
Energetic and cosmopolitan, their family fate is entwined with that of their adopted land, Egypt, as it is caught in the upheavals of the twentieth century. Georges Bey Batrakani is the patriarch of this family of Greek Catholic, French-speaking Syrians, living in a Muslim Cairo run by the British. He is driven by the need to achieve the wealth necessary for the luxury he craves. His chosen method is to manufacture the tarboosh, or fez, worn by every member of the Egyptian establishment. As long as the tarboosh holds sway, the family flourishes. But in 1952, everything must change. Egyptians take the reins of power for the first time since the pharaohs, and the tarboosh becomes an anathema. The Batrakanis, birds of passage, their love affair with Egypt at an end, must move on to a new exile elsewhere.

Robert Sole's Bird of Passage.......2007-07-16
I ordered this book on 15 June and by 16 July it has not arrived. Therefore, I really cannnot rate it except as less than zero, but there is nothing less than one star.
An Egyptian odyssey.......2001-08-22
Birds of Passage is as much a chronicle of the sprawling, raucous, and delightfully diverse Batrakani clan as it is a tapestry of modern Egypt- her transition from one of the shimmering cities of the declining Ottoman Empire to one of the center of the post-colonial Arab world. Along the way, Egypt throws off its allegiance to Istanbul, becomes a British protectorate under a succession of local monarchs, and emerges in the 1950s as an independent Republic, marking the first time in thousands of years that native Egyptians took the reins of power. Through this odyssey, the Batrakanis live, grow, and thrive and Sole captures them at their most triumphant and ruined, from the days of glorious wealth during the British occupation to their last, embittered days during the onset of Nasser's regime. Greek Catholics in a predominantly Muslim country, Syrian by heritage, western by faith, and French by language and obsession, in retrospect it seems inevitable that their colorful world would collapse after the end of colonialism. Sole's writing is simple and matter-of-fact, he is spare with language but generous with details, chronicling the lives of a dozen characters. This is both the novel's charm and its major flaw- for the first half it doesn't have a focus as one generation seems to intersperse its events with another. Had Sole streamlined the narrative earlier- to reflect more upon the lives of Georges and Yolande and their children- all of whom take paths which are symbolic of the attitudes their small but influential minority held of Egypt- the novel would have been more gripping. The other flaw is that unless one is engaged in the history of 20th century Egypt, with its successful of khedives, sultans, kings, and dictators, much of the political details are irrelevant. The novel gives a small but interesting glimpse at King Farouq, the last Egyptian monarch- handsome, charismatic, and energetic in youth, fat, lascivious and impotent in later life. At the end of Birds of Passage, one is left with a much deeper appreciation of the diversity of Egypt and a gripping sadness at the passing of a festive, colorful, and vanquished world.
Traces of a vanished world.......2000-07-11
A fairly light read, but fascinating. Takes the reader through several decades of the Franco-phone Syrian community living the good life on the fringes of the British colonial powers in Egypt, until the rude awakenings of nationalization...etc. in the late fifties/early sixties. Family saga written from the point of view of a young narrator; all the characters are full of life, and human nature being what it is, they are recognizable no matter what your cultural background may be. Leaves you with the impression that despite all the setbacks, life is wonderful and most definitely worth living.

Customer Reviews:
Some cute projects..........2007-06-21
Some of the projects are adorable, but I've only started one so far and already found a mistake! (I've only been knitting for a few months...) hopefully things will go well and i'll have cute little projects to surround my baby with, but so far i'm looking to stick to another book, my favorite...
Very rewarding knitting experience.......2007-04-10
I'm quite delighted with this book. The patterns are quite elegant in their simplicity. Perhaps the only criticism I have is that the finished projects actually turn out a little larger than I initially imagined (such as the baby booties, but I have been using cotton and size 2 US needles). For a beginning knitter such as myself, this was a very straightforward book, and the patterns can be easily tailored and embellished to make the finished projects unique gifts.
Classy babies!.......2007-03-08
These are exactly as the title describes, cherished! Simple and quick patterns but exquisitely beautiful. Yarns called for can be pricey, so keep an eye out for bargains or find substitutes in the same gauge. Absolutely beautiful patterns any baby would be lucky to wear! Great gifts!
Classic Baby Knits Book. Great for making fast baby shower gifts........2007-02-16
I adore this book. I really like Erika Knight's designs. She has a very modern, classic style with a slight edge which makes her designs fun to knit. A lot of reviewers have said her books are full of mistakes, but I didn't find any when I made the rolled edge cap and booties as a gift. I did have to decipher a few phrases, but it shouldn't be a problem for most knitters. The simple designs are all knit in stockinette or garter stitch, and some have embroidery or lacy edging. I would love using the luxury yarns suggested in the patterns for a baby of my own, but for gifts, I use other baby yarns which substitute nicely without costing a lot. Using white silk yarn isn't very practical either unless you are making the items for special occasions.
gorgeous book with yes, SIMPLE, patterns to knit!.......2006-12-27
This book is fantastic! My Mom gave it to me for Christmas; I've made a baby hat in it and the garter stitch sweater already! The pictures are beautiful and the instructions overall are very clear.

The classic guide to teen sexuality updated and expanded with information on sexually-transmitted diseases; contraception; sexual abuse; healthy relationships; hotlines and resources; and much more
Customer Reviews:
One caution!.......2007-04-02
My Wife and I ordered this book for our teenage daughter. I have only scanned through it but my Wife has read it from cover to cover. Our only real concern is that on page 99 the author emplies that there is only a 1 in 600 million chance of being born since only 1 of the 600 million sperm is used to fertilize the ovum. The authors discussion makes it seem that it is hard to get pregnant. ITs not that hard to get pregnant! That does not mean more did not reach the ovum, but only one is used.
Also the 600 million number does not match what I find as a "normal sperm count" , which I find to be 40 and 100 million (20 million per milliliter of semen with 2 to 5 ml as a normal volume) Search the web on the quoted text above.
That is just not a reasonable statistical analysis. And in the easy reading format of the book I believe that a teenager could be mislead into believing it is hard to get pregnent.
If half stars were available I would have given it a 4 1/2 out of 5.
Balanced, Realistic, Comprehensive.......2006-11-06
I've reviewed about a dozen teen sexuality education books for my practice and while there are a few good ones, this one by far leads the pack. - Pertinent topics of interest to teens and parents; easy-to-read format; an abundance of good illustrations; accurate information combined with realistic advice - just a great resource for teens, parents and practitioners like myself.
There is nothing underground about this book at all........2006-07-31
Basso's book is intended for younger teenagers, but it promotes abstinence, and is not reality based at all. As a high school teacher, he has to be conservative in this society, but today's teenagers will not accept his message, nor should they. The book is really sex-negative, and as such, it is not very relevant to today's teenagers, especially those 15-19.
Brilliant!.......2006-03-18
Michael Basso does a masterful job of taking a sensitive topic and breaking it down into laymans terms for broad understanding. He uses science, reality, ethical values, and an obvious profound knowledge of what teens are looking for, what they need, and how best to communicate these messages and lessons.
This is an excellent resource for low-level readers, parents, educators, physicians, and most importantly, teens. I enjoyed reading this and now use it within my medical practice with young people. I am also purchasing the Spanish version.
