Book Description
"The Websters have produced an entertaining and informative account of a magical place. . . . Their book should be of interest not only to those familiar with El Cielo or with other natural areas in Mexico, but also to anyone drawn to natural history, travel, and memorable places." --Lane Simonian, author of Defending the Land of the Jaguar: A History of Conservation in Mexico Hidden high in the Sierra de Guatemala mountain range of northeastern Mexico in the state of Tamaulipas is the northernmost tropical cloud forest of the Western Hemisphere. Within its humid oak-sweetgum woodlands, tropical and temperate species of plants and animals mingle in rare diversity, creating a mecca for birders and other naturalists. Fred and Marie Webster first visited Rancho del Cielo, cloud forest home of Canadian immigrant Frank Harrison, in 1964, drawn by the opportunity to see such exotic birds as tinamous, trogons, motmots, and woodcreepers only 500 miles from their Austin, Texas, home. In this book, they recount their many adventures as researchers and tour leaders from their base at Rancho del Cielo, interweaving their reminiscences with a history of the region and of the struggle by friends from both sides of the border to have some 360,000 acres of the mountain declared an area protected from exploitation--El Cielo Biosphere Reserve. Their firsthand reporting, enlivened with vivid tales of the people, land, and birds of El Cielo, adds an engagingly personal chapter to the story of conservation in Mexico.

A Wonderful Book -- A Wonderful Adventure.......2002-05-24
This is a wonderful book. There is an adventure with every page turn and the descriptions are deliciously vivid. I always look for books that will "take me away," and at the same time, teach me something new. The Road To El Cielo took me to Mexico's cloud forests and inspired in me a new appreciation for its wildlife, plant life, and way of life. Highly Recommended.
Book Description
In his magisterial Fine Bird Books, Sir Sacheverall Sitwell says of Audubon: 'There is nothing in the world of fine books quite like the discovery of Audubon. The giant energy of the man, his power of achievement and accomplishment, give him something of the epical force of a Walt Whitman or a Herman Melville...Audubon is the greatest of bird Painters; he belongs to American history.'
John James Audubon's Birds of America, from which this selection has been taken, is the finest pictorial ornithological book ever produced. Unlike the drawings and paintings of his contemporaries, which were produced from prepared skins and zoo specimens, Audubon's paintings are taken directly from his observations in the wild, and the richness and directness come straight from the real world. No wonder that Audubon became known in his lifetime as 'The American Woodsman'.
Audubon was unable to raise sufficient financial backing in the United States and he sailed for England in 1826. In its original form, Birds of America contained 435 hand-colored, aquatinted plates which were completed between 1827 and 1838. It was printed in London and bound into four double elephant folio volumes (measuring approximately 30 X 27 inches (76 X 69 cm)) so that all the birds could be illustrated life-size. Between 175 and 200 sets were produced, and the last complete set to come to auction fetched nearly $3,000,000.

.....not just for the birds.........2000-06-21
"Audubon: American Birds" is a not only a wonderful introduction to Audubon's works but a portrait of the birds as seen through the eyes of a great American naturalist. The volume also serves as a good reference source though tempered with an romantic view giving the astute reader an additional insight into the times in which Audubon worked. I would definately recomment this book to both the birder and art lover.

Customer Reviews:
Worth having for "tune-up" instructions alone.......2006-12-26
If you have a new bandsaw (or you have an old on that's not running perfectly), this book will tell you how to set up and tune the saw. The writing is very clear, the steps are logical and the illustrations are useful (even though they're not in color). You can find bandsaw tune-up instructions on the Web -- for example at Woodcraft's site -- but nothing is as complete as this book.
Beyond the tune-up/set-up guidance, you get excellent advice on blade selection and some useful ideas on how to take advantage of the bandsaw's versatility. You may want to skip the first part of the book, which describes the history of bandsaws and the types of saws available. That section is interesting but not particularly compelling.
One thing I like is that the author doesn't bash Asian imports (Jet, Ridgid, Grizzy etc.). And the tune up guidance helped me get the saw I bought from Home Depot running smoothly.
Makes my old saw like new.......2006-03-16
I have a 20 year old Taiwan made band saw that I was about to replace. After following the tune up instructions in this book and a few inexpensive parts, the saw runs better than new. Anyone with a band saw, old or new should have this book.
Get this book Before you get a new blade.......2006-01-29
This is "The Book" on bandsaws. I have a very old saw (Late 1930's Walker Turner) which was giving me fits when resawing. With the tips and set up info in this book I can use the saw to cut 1/2 inch thick by 6 inch wide boards in 2 equal halfs eveytime. Befor I would have had one thick and one thin or the blade would have run out some where in the middle sometimes even destroying the blade. It has helped me get this old saw working better than I thought it could. The chapters on blade seltion and tracking / guide set up were worth the price. If you want to get the very best your saw and do or are thinking of getting a new saw read, No study this book.
Solid Buy ... But Add Bird's "Bandsaw Book".......2003-02-01
As a novice woodworker involved in home reconstruction and associated projects such as building bookcases, wall shelves, built-in desks, cabinets, etc., my basic shop until now has consisted of the trusty table saw, compound mitre, router and more recently a 13" Delta planer (great tool). Having found access to a terrific hardwood lumber wholesale outlet, the issues of economically getting boards of out 6"-12" rough cut lumber and getting into jointing/fancy cuts, naturally placed my focus on bandsaws for resawing, tenon cuts, scroll work and such. The Bandsaw Handbook is worth every penny and it takes only a few pennies to place a lot of information at your fingertips here. It would be helpful to get real, detailed, color pictures (and fewer sketches) into future editions, if any. As a serious bandsaw buyer, I'm still left with (as with Bird's book and also very helpful) the fuzzy problem of finding the best all-around buy for my needs. Neither book does a great job in my mind on "how to select a bandsaw". However, this is probably the primary reason why many of us "weekend woodworkers" buy the books to begin with - seasoned bandsaw owners don't need it. Still looking for that simple, practical guide for the bandsaw investment. Regardless .. buy Bandsaw Handbook by Duginske if you are considering getting into the bandsawing world, its loaded.
OK...but not the best.......2001-10-01
This book was "OK", but it isn't nearly as good as "The Bandsaw Book" by Lonnie Bird. I've purchased both of them and read both of them. If you want to get just one book to learn how to use, set up, buy, and tune a bandsaw, new or used, get Lonnie Bird's book. It's written in a better format and uses better photographs.

Customer Reviews:
I wanted to like this book...but..........2007-09-03
During my pregnancy, Your Pregnancy Week By Week was my constant companion. I looked forward to reading the chapters for each week, learning about my baby's development, and considering different baby-related issues as my pregnancy progressed. The book was user friendly, cleanly laid-out, and easy to follow. Logically, as I was looking for books about infant care, I considered Your Baby's First Year Week By Week.
The layout of the book was similar to Your Pregnancy Week By Week. It included the familiar weekly chapters containing useful nibbles of information about what to expect from my baby and what kind of care to offer him. It covers a wide variety of issues, including baby gear, bathing, diapering, pets and babies, and all the things you would expect from a comprehensive parenting "manual."
However, as I dove below the surface a bit, I was disturbed at some of the content and appalled at some of the blatant errors I found in there. The most shocking example was in reference to the care of uncircumcised baby boys. The authors advise parents to gently retract a baby's foreskin to clean. Every reliable medical source, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, states clearly: don't ever retract a boy's foreskin, as forcible retraction could potentially lead to problems later in baby boy's life. I was also very upset to see the authors' take on breastfeeding, which again contradicted the official positions of the AAP and the World Health Organization. If Your Baby's First Year Week By Week can't even provide reliable information on these two fundamental infant care themes, then I don't feel inclined to trust the knowledge of the authors in any other matters.
In the end, I put this book back on the shelf and opted instead for a copy of Dr. Sears' Baby Book. I would strongly advise any expectant or new mother to give Your Baby's First Year Week by Week a miss.
Excellent book for those with COMMON SENSE.......2007-08-09
This is a wonderful book. It tells week by week, what the AVERAGE baby will be doing. It can be used as a wonderful guide to know how to assist your baby in growth, or it can be used as a guide to drive yourself insane because your baby is not doing a certain thing by a specific week. For example: Babies get their first tooth at the average age of 7 months. Since some babies are born with teeth, that means some must not get them until they are a year old. If you are the type of person who can see the book as a guide, it is a great one. If you are paranoid or a hypochondriac. DON'T BUY IT!
My favorite baby book!.......2007-07-05
I'm surprised by this book's bad reviews. This is my favorite baby book! I actually gave away my other baby books and kept this one. I saw all of the reviews when I was online buying a copy for a friend! I like how the book discusses baby's development week by week and the milestones are fun. The book has practical information and it's an easy read. Maybe to minimize distress, new parents should realize that their baby's development probably won't track precisely with the book's week by week discussions since every baby is different.
Great addition to your parenting library!.......2007-06-30
I must admit that I am a little baffled by the negative reviews about this book. I have many parenting books, but this one is one of my favorites. I don't bother getting too technical about what exact week my son is on, but I guesstimate which chapter to read by the month guidelines in parentheses in the chapter headings. This organization style works really well for me, actually. I love reading the short chapters when I have a minute during naptime or bedtime. I skip over anything that doesn't interest me and use the index to reread any sections that I have an immediate interest in--i.e. rashes if I see a red spot on my son's skin. The developmental milestones in the book have corresponded amazingly well to my son's progress. Sometimes I didn't even notice a new ability or behavior until I read about it in the book and then recognized it in my baby.
My favorite part, though, are the Toys and Play This Week sections at the end of each chapter. I love these extra songs, games, and play suggestions that correspond to my baby's development, and so does my son. The book is worth buying for those alone. I have not agreed with all the advice in the book, certainly. I use cloth diapers and I have not fed my child as many types of solid foods as the book recommends for a baby of his age, for example. But like many other parents, I have lots of different books and I like to read the different opinions and then do what my doctor and I think is best for my baby. Babies are so different and parenting advice so varied that I can't imagine there is a book out there that would completely, 100 percent correspond to my baby and my parenting style. I wouldn't take anything I read in a parenting book as incontrovertible truth. The bottom line for me is that this is a wonderful book to use to get a general idea of what developmental milestones to look for in your new baby and find some creative games to play with your child as they progress through their first year of life.
This book was our bible! A+A+A+.......2007-05-13
This book was our bible!!!! It went with us everywhere. We had our first son and didn't know what the heck we were doing! He had alot of issues in the beginning with jaundice, acid reflux, diaper rash, fifth's disease, you name it and this book answered so many questions for us on whether or not we were overreacting or being safe. I read the other reviews on the book and maybe it wasn't on point on the one subject for that one reviewer but overall, the book covers nearly any problem that may arise and gives some sound advice that worked great for us and since, my sister, 2 cousins, 3 friends and a 2 co-workers...I highly recommend!!!!!!!
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2007-03-08
you have an idea of what to expect every week and some activities to do with your baby.
Very helpful with ideas!!!.......2005-10-04
My husband and I are first time parents and we really recommend this book. It is nice to see a week by week review of things that might be happening in your child's life as well as how to interact with them on sights, sounds, etc. It is an easy read -- yet totally informational! I love all the examples they give.
Good and Well-organized.......2003-03-24
Well organized, scientific, and full of useful material. What else do you need?!
How to Play with Your Baby.......2003-03-17
GREAT!! I give it 5 stars!! This book has great information about your child's development in any given week and how to play with her to help her develop. I love this book!! I am only on week 8 but the material has been consistently informative. I have recommended this book to my daughter's daycare and even offered to buy the book for them (I could not find the book locally or they would have had it this morning.). This book is easy to read and is well organized. It is very concise, which makes it very managable when you only have a few minutes to spare. Buy this book, you won't regret it.
