The Principles of Riding.......2003-12-15
As a trainer, I give this book to all of my clients. Without a doubt, it gives a good foundation of the English riding sport. Principles covers the basics of seat, aids, basic jumping and elementary dressage. The concepts of through-lightness are discussed as are the half halt and being on the bit. The information is to the point and easy to understand then implement.
Absolutely the best addition to my library!.......2001-11-30
If you don't have much to invest in books on riding and dressage, do yourself a favor and get this one. I have Jane Kidd's Dressage Essentials and Sylvia Loch's Riding in Lightness, and I really enjoy both of those also, but Principles gets down to the real nitty gritty with excellent explanations and clear drawings.
I'm one of those novice, overage riders with a new, relatively green horse, and we're endeavoring to learn dressage. Our instructor/trainer recommended this book, and it's the best I've read yet on the basics of everything, from the different types of cavesons, to the horse and how he functions, and the rider, too. It confirmed to me also that I have an excellent instructor who is taking the classical approach and not trying to rush us, which seems to be happening too much these days.
This is a great book to read through, and then study in detail.
Mission Critical.......2001-09-24
If you ride horses, and especially if you study dressage, you need this book. I'm buying it for the third time because I keep lending it out and losing it. This is horsemanship as it's meant to be done. If your trainer isn't teaching you consistently with this system, RUN AWAY.
All you really need for your beginning equestrian library is this book, Alois Podhajsky's "Complete Training of Horse and Rider," and the Pony Club manual (for guidance on grooming, stable management, health, etc.).
Excellent Basics and updated perspective.......2000-05-10
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I expected the stereotypical German style and found a really excellent book on the basics for both horse and rider. The basics for the horse stress the classical stretching, relaxtion and throughness. But, the book also approaches the training of the horse with a very "soft" feel. I think this is a really excellent book for all riders, beginners esp., but a nice review for more advanced.

Book Description
An excellent resource for artists, designers, architects, craftspeople, or anyone interested in the decorative arts. First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament remains a design classic. Its inspiration came from the pioneering architect and designer Owen Jones. His observations of decorative art on his extensive travels in Europe and the Near East were employed to improve the poor quality of Western design. His goal was to change the Victorian habit of mixing elements from a wide variety of sources and applying this mix indiscriminately to buildings, graphic design, and products. His resulting study is a comprehensive analysis of a remarkable collection of styles of ornamental design -- from Ancient Egypt and Greece to Imperial China and Renaissance Italy. With its sumptuous illustrations, its detailed survey of individual cultures, and its manifesto of "General Principles," it offered guidance to the designers of the future. In this new edition the designs are further illuminated by Iain Zaczek's perceptive commentaries. Hugely influential since its first publication, The Grammar of Ornament inspired great figures such as William Morris and Frank Lloyd Wright. Contemporary designers, entertained by the archaic charm of Jones's descriptions, are struck by the book's enduring relevance and its soundness regarding the essential principles of good design.

Little Gem.......2006-02-08
I was disappointed when I first received this book. I had bought it as recommended reading for my design course and ordered it blindly. I don't know what I had expected but this wasn't it. Then, one day, I pulled it off my bookcase, looking for information on a certain type of design - and suddenly found myself enthralled with the beauty of this book. Let it not fool you, it's a beautiful little gem packed with design and information. Not a centimetre wasted.
Details, Details, Details..........2005-10-09
If you are looking for pure details for specific styles, this book is for you. If you are looking for overviews or full pictures, this may not be for you. If you are into design, I think it is a great resource to put on your shelf!
This CD is the best........2004-07-11
I have the thin booklet as a reference to the CD, which I purchased some years ago. If you do Webpage design this CD is a must have. Unlike other CDs of Grammar of Ornament this one has the images in EPSF, JPEG and PDF form. Others I've looked at only had PDF and that doesn't do me any good. I've used Fireworks from Macromedia's Studio MX Suite to make backgrounds and buttons for webpages made with Flash and Dreamweaver. If you can get your hands on this CD or any of the other CDs Direct Imagination has created, do it. I do think Grammar of Ornament is the best of all the ones Direct Imagination produced. Having the book for reference with it is handy, but if you can only get the CD alone, do it anyway. After a while you just know which plate has which graphic.
Pattern Paradise.......2001-10-30
This book was first published in 1856 and is a design classic! Owen Jones was born in 1809 and is a key figure in the history of British design. He was an architect and designer who taught in London during the 1850s.
He traveled in Europe and the Near East, were he helped to bring back ideas to improve the quality of Western design. This collection is a result of his comprehensive analysis of patterns. The sumptuous illustrations are presented in these sections:
Ornament of Savage Tribes
Egyptian Ornament
Assyrian and Persian Ornament
Greek Ornament
Pompeian Ornament
Roman Ornament
Byzantine Ornament
Arabian Ornament
Turkish Ornament
Moresque Ornament from the Alhambra
Persian Ornament
Indian Ornament
Hindoo Ornament
Chinese Ornament
Celtic Ornament
Mediaeval Ornament
Renaissance Ornament
Elizabethan Ornament
Italian Ornament
Leaves and Flowers from Nature
The original Preface to Owen Jones's original folio edition has been preserved and included. The general principles in the arrangement of form and color are listed so you can see which are advocated throughout this book.
If you are interested in reading about over 2,350 classic patterns (color engravings representing a vast range of ornamental styles), this is the book for you! More than likely, you will gravitate to one form of the other and concentrate your reading efforts on those sections.
The actual pictures are all numbered and the mediaeval section is especially beautiful.
Iain Zaczek has contributed to the commentaries in this work. He is an art historian and has written on a wide variety of subjects. He is also the author of The Essential William Morris, The essential Art Deco, and the Art of Illuminated Manuscripts.
A Gem.......2001-06-26
The Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones is a highly regarded design classic, first published in 1856 and just as relevant today. The DK edition is a pleasure to examine (although you may need reading glasses to see the six-point type for some captions). The small format fits well in the hand and has a nice heft (504 pages at 1.3 inches thick). The paper is superb and the colored inks for the thousands of engravings brilliant and crisp. If you need a version that lays flat on your drawing table or a scanner bed, however, this one has some drawbacks. The images are very tight to the inner margins, and the glued binding difficult to keep open without breaking the back. That aside, the DK edition is beautiful and a great buy.

Customer Reviews:
THE Grammar has Remained an Influential Source .......2006-09-10
Englishman Owen Jones first published his monument to design, the Grammar of Ornament, in 1856. It was originally published in installments for subscribers. Jones's illustrated plates and design motifs drew from nineteen different cultures including the ornament of Oceania, Rome, Byzantium, ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Moorish Spain.
The Grammar was adapted to architectural decoration, fabrics, textiles, tile design, furniture and wallpaper during the second half of the nineteenth century. It has remained influential among designers worldwide.
The quirky colorways are decidedly of another era and worthy of study. I have effectively used them to thwack my creativity out of occasional dead ends or potholes. This is a respected, classic reference. It is deserving of space in every designer's reference library.
Fabulous.......2005-10-01
This book is excellent for artists, web designers, students. there are well chosen designs of many countries and eras and more than just a few for each catagory. It is a reference book that is a total must.
Lovely Textures and Ornaments! Great for Webdesign.......2000-06-19

A lot of the graphics can make for lovely textures and backgrounds. The graphics are from history .... ornaments from Oceania, Egypt, Greek, Pompeian, Roman, Byzantine, Arabian, Turkish, Moorish, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Celtic, Medieval, Renaissance, Italian ... loads of Ornaments from all over. A must buy IMO!

Excellent resource.......2005-08-12
This is the type of book you want to own if you are involved with design. It's great for those times when you need to create something that relates to this school of design - it is also pure inspiration. Surprisingly for a design book, this comes with a text part that contains a refresher on Japanese design.

Book Description
This edition makes more widely available the excellent handbook of descriptive reference that accompanies each volume of the corpus. To meet the demands of compiling the first comprehensive catalogue of Anglo-Saxon stone sculpture, Professor Cramp, the series editor, has devised a new system of description capable of dealing with the complex ornament of the material. As well as classifying forms, shapes, and decoration, she also discusses techniques of carving, dating methods and epigraphy. The extensive use of line drawings to illustrate each point makes this the most useful and compact work produced on the subject to date - an invaluable reference tool for anyone interested in early medieval art and design.

Ideas for Your Garden.......2000-06-23
This book has some of the most versatile and helpful gardening ideas I have found. I have shown it to others and they have bought copies. I am so excited about putting some of these suggestions to work in my own garden and then enjoying the results for the years to come.
It's full of design tips, but not good for choosing plants........1999-05-01
The authors of this book have a lot of good ideas for garden and landscape design. There are many color photos and illustrations that show lots of examples of the concepts they discuss. It's a great book for design ideas. My big complaint, and the reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is that the authors evidently consider Iowa a southern state. They talk a lot about how much cold a plant can handle, but they never once even consider that many of the plants they talk about can't survive in states like California, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Louisianna, So. Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Missippi, Hawaii, or large portions of many other states. If you live in any of these states and are looking for a book to help you choose particular plants for your garden this is not the book for you. They are so oblivious to the southern zones that they left off the bottom range on every zone reference. The result is that this book is only good for northern climates when it comes to plant selection. Only buy this book if you want design ideas. Choose another selection if you are looking for which plants to choose for your garden.
If you live in the Midwest, North East or Canada (zones 1-6) this book could be considered a five star book.

Binge Drinking And Youth Culture
ASIN: 157954777X |
Book Description
If you thought you already knew the extent of drinking on campuses across America and dismissed it as 'high-spirited,' think again. College binge drinking is more deadly than ever, and the rate of injury, rape, and death credited to it will shock you: -On campus, two of five college students binge-drink at least once per week. -More students binge-drink than use illicit drugs or smoke cigarettes. -Alcohol has been linked to half of all campus crime, including battery, rape, and theft. -The alcohol industry spends $1.8 billion a year in advertising, much of it targeted at college students. -College students spend more annually on alcohol than on soda, tea, milk, juice, coffee, and schoolbooks, combined. America's colleges are in crisis and Henry Wechsler, Ph.D., a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, will bring an understanding to readers not only of the seriousness of the problem but also how to combat it. Dying to Drink is required reading for any parent sending his or her son or daughter off to school.
Customer Reviews:
The truth about underage drinking.......2003-11-12
Few people realize that alcohol is involved in the deaths of six times more Americans under the age of 21 than all the other illicit drugs combined. Underage drinking is the #1 youth drug problem in our country, but far too many parents, teachers and administrators look the other way and view it as a rite of passage. "Dying to Drink" does an outstanding job laying out the true scope of underage drinking and its consequences. As a long-time advocate against drunk & drugged driving and underage drinking and as a state lawmaker, I believe this book is a great resource to students, schools, parents and communities. Many thanks to the authors for telling the truth about underage drinking and for giving concerned citizens guidance on how to take action.
Seeing the forest for the trees..........2003-07-07
We are so immersed in a national cult of alcohol that we can't, or won't, see the forces at work. This book peels back the façade so that we can make our own decisions about were we want to go as a society. The myth that the personal choice to abuse alcohol is a sacred right that harms only the user, is exploded. The authors put a human face on a steady stream of well-researched statistics that run throughout the book. I was afraid that this was going to be yet another preachy tome but found myself intrigued, angered, disgusted, yet often uplifted and enlightened by the vignettes presented in this lively-written narrative. Personally, I abhor cynicism and knee-jerk accusations that use conspiracy to explain away every societal ill - but the authors' indictment of the alcohol industry and its accomplices is so compelling, and upon reflection, so obvious, that the word "conspiracy" is too weak in this case. Sadly, they show that even the purity of "good science" is being prostituted by certain social-pschology academics; as a scientist I find this shocking. The ultimate obscenity is that, more than ever before, our children are being systematically used as "societal gateways" to infuse violence, tragedy, and irresponsible behavior into the bedrock of our culture. And we are willing and compliant.
Perception isn't always reality.......2003-06-19
In their efforts to rally the public to action, the authors have exaggerated the actual magnitude of alcohol abuse on American college campuses. Federal surveys consistently report a continuing decline in alcohol consumption rather than an "epidemic." Their own data fail to make the case and they are forced to use anecdotal interviews of students who do abuse alcohol. But anecdotal evidence does not constitute science or a sound basis for public policy. Their suggestions for reducing the problem consist of demonstrably ineffective policies along with some that appear to constitute unconstiitutional infringements upon personal liberties. Much more useful is H. Wesley Perkins' The Social Norms Approach to Prevening ...."
Alcohol Prohibition has Never Worked.......2003-06-15
In spite of the federally-documented continuing decline in alcohol use among American college students, the authors promote the view that there is an epidemic of collegiate alcohol abuse. They rely heavily on anecdotal rather than systematically-collected evidence to support this view. Wechsler and Wuethrich contend that this alleged dangerous epidemic requires a number of strong public policies against alcohol that are prohibitionist in nature. However, attempts to impose total abstinence on adults age 18 to 21 would not likely to be successful and would almost certainly be counter-productive. Prohibition has always been a failure and led to less frequent but heavier and more dangerous consumption..
