Book Description
At this school, there are some children who push and tease and bully. Sometimes they hurt other kids by just ignoring them. The girl in this story sees it happening, but she would never do these mean things herself. Then one day something happens that shows her that being a silent bystander isn't enough. Will she take some steps on her own to help another kid?
Bright, fluid, realistic watercolors illustrate the story, set in a school with lots of diversity. Resources at the end of the book will help parents and children talk about teasing and bullying and find ways to stop it at school. One child at a time can help change a school.

A powerful story.......2007-09-29
As a retired classroom teacher, I have read many books to classes over the years. This book stands out as one of the best, both for it's message, it's illustrations, and writing style. I now use the book in the anti-viollence program that I teach in schools.
The story sends a powerful message to children (and adults) about taking action to change injustices that we see. There are times when we notice things that are unfair or mean, but we believe that we are doing enough to feel sorry for those who are the brunt of such unkindnesses. The story clearly demonstrates the importance of moving beyond feeling sympathy to feeling empathy. We must speak up for others and do something that makes a difference.
The ending provides the students with provocative food for thought to initiate a reflective discussion. This book is suitable for 2nd through 6th graders, and even beyond!
Powerful.......2007-03-11
Say Something portrays an enormous message with a minimum number of words. As I read it to my class of 3rd graders, their response was immediate and powerful. They identified with the characters on many levels, and for the first few pages, thought that being a silent, "innocent" bystander WAS the right thing to do. As the story went on, their faces and comments demonstrated that they had reached the realization that they had the power to help. Months later, they still talk about the concepts introduced to them in the story. When we discuss problems at Class Meeting, it's not unusual to hear, "We have to look out for each other. Nobody wants to be a bystander!"
Empathy.......2007-03-09
Say Something is an essential book for children in elementary school. The book is short and simple but is made powerful by the way it reflects the experiences of the readers/listeners.
The children I read to are ages 5, 3, and 1. I asked them to look at the illustrations and identify the people the book is referencing. They can easily tell which child is sad, alone, or angry. We could easily identify the emotions being illustrated and therefore we were able to better empathize with the characters in the book. Empathizing with the characters helps teach a lesson in doing the same with others in our day to day life.
This book not only teaches empathy, but also demonstrates a beautiful solution that works with many problems.
A wonderful reminder to all of us to Say SOMETHING!.......2006-03-04
Peggy Moss has written a powerful book which still brings tears to my eyes when I read it aloud. This book reminds us that we have the power to say something about what is going on around us. Thank you Peggy!
if not now, when?.......2005-07-01
Rebeccasreads highly recommends SAY SOMETHING as an important picture book with something to say!
It's one thing to notice how your schoolmates get along, which ones are always alone, & who is always teased. It's quite another thing to be on the receiving end. So what do you do? Do you do anything?
SAY SOMETHING urges you, in scene after scene, to become aware, to test your courage, to step forward & do unto others as you would have them do unto you, especially when teasers & taunters are looking for a bit of put-down fun.

Thank You, Chuck!.......2007-03-21
No one has impacted me more in the early years of my ministry like Chuck Swindoll. I read everything he wrote. He writes like a pastor who cares for his readers. His readers are like his congregants.
This volume is no different. It reflects the heart of a pastor and the mind of a teacher. Buy it! It will help you through some tough stuff.
This is the kind of book Christian authors should be writing!!!!.......2005-08-06
I've always liked Charles Swindoll's books. He writes in a conversational, warm style but uses a lot of biblical references and anecdotes from his personal life that resonate with me. He seems to be speaking my language and telling my life story with each book!
By way of contraste, some contemporary Christian authors (such as Rob Bell, author of Velvet Elvis) gloss over the Bible (or outright undermine it) and offer nothing but more questions, doubts and concerns. (See my review of Velvet Elvis for more on that kind of Christian author's efforts to speak to a "new generation.")
By way of contrast, Charles Swindoll attempts to answer questions and heal wounds. He's not divisive or offensive in his efforts, either. He seems to be a wise, compassionate man who truly cares about those in his church -- as well as those reading his books around the world.
I've been through a few tough times in my life, and I usually gain strength by reading books like this one from Charles Swindoll.
Thank you, Pastor Swindoll for doing so much to touch the lives of those around you.
A book providing biblical answers to contemporary problems.......2004-12-11
Charles R. Swindoll has been through a lot of tough stuff. As a pastor, college chancellor, radio host and author, he has experienced firsthand many of the troubles that life has to offer. From "Anxiety" to "Temptation" and from "Confrontation" to "Shame," the fourteen topics he covers provide a model for the reader to use when life blindsides him. Thus it is with the authority that comes from experience that Dr. Swindoll generously offers to help those who are struggling with their own particular pile of tough stuff.
GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH STUFF explores two basic premises that are built on an underlying theme. First, if you are alive on this planet, you will have problems. The second premise is that God has provided us with the original self-help manual, the Bible. The underlying theme is the adequacy of God's love and grace to see us through even the toughest of stuff.
Dr. Swindoll has the gift of knowledge when it comes to the Bible, and he deftly identifies the roots of our "troubles" as well as the solutions to them by referencing biblical stories and passages. In each short, focused chapter, even seasoned believers will wonder anew at the omniscience of God. He knew just what kind of problems we would face, how we would try to solve them according to the wisdom of the world, and how sadly we would fail. Then, as Dr. Swindoll demonstrates, God in His loving and benevolent way provided us with the wisdom of the ages if only we would use it --- not only when things get tough but even before they get tough.
Often, when people have problems, they feel guilty and shamed or angry and resentful. But the problems themselves have been around since the beginning of time. And, more importantly, Jesus Himself experienced them. So when the Word of God offers answers, it can be trusted because the Word Himself did what His Father told Him to do...and it worked. We cannot be exactly like Jesus because, though He was tempted, He never sinned; often our problems are compounded because we do sin. Yet, through God's grace, the same solutions are available to us, and if we truly repent, we won't have to go through the same tough stuff again.
GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH STUFF is not a simple "take two verses and call me in the morning" book of platitudes. It provides biblical answers to contemporary problems in a loving and gentle way. Charles Swindoll is a man after God's own heart.

I stole it boys!.......2007-01-13
One of the best historical fiction works of modern history, and I found it at the local thrift store for eighty cents.
Psychological Assessment disguised as fiction.......2004-04-28
I first read this book as a teen ager in the 1960's, and I've probably read it eight or nine times since then. This book introduced me to Robert Ruark and started my life-long appreciation of his works. Something of Value examines clash of civilization between the British settlers and the Kikuyu natives in Kenya after WWII during what became the Mau Mau Rebellion. It examines the causes and consequences of the conflict and how it affected both sides. As I became older, I began to understand the motivations of the characters and their actions. With each rereading, the book changed. It was not only a safari adventure story, but it was also a snapshot of history, a study of human psychology, and a search for recognition and justice. I know I'm paraphrasing, but the opening Bantu proverb, "If you do away with the traditions of the past, then you must first replace them with Something of Value" definitely and perfectly describes the book. When Ruark wrote about the conflict, he examined how people on both sides were torn from what they knew and had cherished in the past and were thrown unprepared into the future. He examines foreign and unfamiliar ideology, how it affects us, and what its consequences are. Finally, despite the cruelty, blood, and horror in the book, he examines the nobility of human beings and what it means to us. This book has changed the way I view the world because I now can appreciate both the view of the fox and the hound. If great writing enables us to finds new and deeper meaning with each rereading, then "Something of Value" is great literature.
A Superb Book.......2003-03-31
This book definitely lives up to its billing. It tells the harrowing story of the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya during the 1950s. The writing is superb. A very difficult book to put down.
Excellent Read.......2003-03-19
This classic is worth the read. It's the best historical fiction I have read in a long time.
Something of Value.......2001-11-26
I first read this book when a neighbor loaned it to me in 1972. I had difficulty in returning it! This not only made me Robert Ruark fan, it caused me to begin a collection of his first editions. It is a gripping story of a part of our planet that may never find peace. It is also a tremendous piece of writing, the like of which comes along only every few years. Ruark traveled in Africa during this challenging period and as a news correspondent, held pre-eminent qualifications to write the story. I have re-read it several times since John loaned it to me. Along with another borrowed book, Shackleford's story of Anarctica, I could start and end my library!

The great, forgotten novel of Africa.......2006-04-25
I am absolutely thrilled and honored to write the first Amazon review of Something of Value, though a little amazed as well. Has this truly great, epic novel of Africa been so completely forgotten?
Robert Ruark was sometimes called "the poor man's Hemingway," but that's just because he wrote about Africa without lapsing into the pseudo-intellectual vagueness that leaves so many of Papa's readers (come on, admit it) wondering what the devil he was talking about. While Hemingway was boozing in Cuba and writing about fish, and ten years before Capote invented "fictional journalism," Ruark was writing about life, death and sheer bloody terror in East Africa, and leaving nobody in any doubt about it. When you get to the end of Something of Value, you won't be scratching your head, pondering philosophic conundrums. You'll be wiping your brow with a shaking hand, just bloody glad you weren't there.
To oblivious, Eisenhower-era Americans, Africa was Tarzan and King Solomon's Mines. (Several local members on the crew of John Ford's Mogambo, filmed during the uprising, were later arrested as Mau Mau. Imagine if Clark Gable, Ava Gardner or Grace Kelly had been hacked to death in their tents.) Robert Ruark -- ex-reporter and big-game hunter, just arrived for his second African safari -- was the right man in the right place at the right time to pen a one-of-a-kind tale of Africa, brilliantly simple in concept, brilliantly stunning in execution. Two men -- one white, one black, raised as brothers in colonial Kenya -- are caught up, as are their peoples, in the Terror: a vicious, bloody uprising that degenerates into a slogging war of racial extermination. Savage mutilations. Horrific blood rituals. Incest. Cannibalism. Bloody-handed atrocities committed on both sides. Ruark not only doesn't sugarcoat it, he documents it. (He drew on actual events for several scenes and characters.) Something of Value, its sweeping scope and universal theme spattered with Manson-level depravity and violence, must have hacked white-bread, Peyton Place America's skull open like a bloody machete aimed right at the face.
Published in April 1955, the novel was an instant, massive bestseller, with more than a million copies ultimately sold in over ten languages. It spawned a predictably mediocre movie starring Rock Hudson, Sidney Poitier and the lovely and perfectly cast Dana Wynter. With its simplistic politics, sanitized violence and utterly stupid ending, the film is a poor black & white shadow of the full Technicolor, Cinemascope-sized novel. Blunt as a club, sharp as a saw-backed bush knife, this book drags us readers by the hair, kicking and screaming, out of our comfortable sleep and into the African night.
Though it doesn't make him wrong, Ruark's take on the downfall of empire has been overridden by the modern, politically correct view of colonialism, which assumes that everyone in Africa is now better off because they aren't white-ruled. Anybody who wrote this book today would almost certainly be vilified as a racist (watch for subsequent reviews; I give myself a better than 50-50 chance of catching the same flak, just for praising it), which is probably why Something of Value has been largely forgotten. Thing is, Mau Mau set the pattern for every subsequent African uprising. This sort of racial, intertribal violence is still going on right now, in Zimbabwe, the Congo, Sudan, and a slew of other sub-Saharan countries, and we all try hard to forget about that, too. Something of Value is Africa's War and Peace. It's Kenya's Sand Pebbles. And if you read one novel about the African Question, this is the one. (Well, after mine, that is.)

This wonderful book by David Small (all of his books are great) may be my favorite children's book--even surpassing The Velveteen Rabbit. Read it if you need a boost to your self esteem. This is a must for every family library.
Small in name only.......2000-05-01
David Small has done it again. RUBY MAE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY is a little book with a big message - giving people (no matter how old they are) confidence can help them acomplish great things. Ruby Mae would like to deliver her message of Universal Peace and Understanding to the world but she can't because she has a problem speaking. Her tongue gets twisted. With the help of her inventor nephew and a most curious hat she overcomes this difficulty and helps the world be a better place. With typically delightful David Small illustrations and text, this is a wonderful read-aloud for children of all ages. This is no Small offering from a wonderful children's author.

For a decade, the nonprofit organization Mothers and Others for a Living Planet has been an advocate for raising children in natural, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly environments. Now, the editors of the Mothers and Others newsletter The Green Guide, Mindy Pennybacker and Aisha Ikramuddin, have compiled hundreds of suggestions into a comprehensive guidebook ideal for all parents concerned with providing their children with safe, "green" surroundings.
Pennybacker and Ikramuddin provide details and suggestions for preparing baby's room, taking care of yourself during pregnancy, diapering the natural way, feeding your child, avoiding PVC in toys, avoiding the dangers of installing new carpets in baby's room (nonnatural carpets "offgas" VOCs--volatile organic compounds--and all carpets can become a trap for allergens and dust mites), and much more. It's not all warnings and cautions, though; the "Raising (and Protecting) Your Naturalist Child" chapter discusses the importance of exposing your child to the natural world, including ways to encourage empathy for animals. A thorough listing of "green" resources, information, and Web sites rounds off this highly useful guide. --Ericka Lutz

A great guide for starting your babies life off safely.......2007-07-03
We are exposed to thousands of chemicals in furniture, clothes, cleaning products, air, food, water. For babies' sensitive, developing bodies these chemicals can pose life long developmental problems and introduce illness and disease. There are many choices you can make as a parent to reduce and eliminate your child's exposure to harmful chemicals and this book shares those. Most are simple choices like choosing non-toxic paints and using natural household cleaners. Others, like paying a little more to buy an organic mattress to avoid the harmful fire retardant chemicals (recently banned in California) on conventional mattresses, may seem harder. But what wouldn't you do to protect the health and well-being of the most precious person in your life? I'd do anything with in my ability.
This book has been a constant reference for me since having my baby. It's an invaluable resource. If your pregnant or planning a baby, buy it now.
Not accurate.......2007-03-12
I did not find the information in this book to be accurate or helpful.
Great, just lacking some... .......2005-06-28
Mothers & Others for a Livable Planet, presents Guide to Natural Baby Care by Mindy Pennybacker Aisha Ikramuddin. 4 out of 5 Stars!!
Overall, I found it to be a fantastic read, enjoyed the layout, and the freedom from seeing naked, or semi naked pregnate ladies. The book mentioned alot of things and this is the book that can go with you during your prengancy and after. It goes over designing a baby room, choosing products for your baby, and how to take care of the baby (i.e. bath, change diaper, etc).
I did find it to fall short in the area of "alternative" parenting or "village" parenting wherein the children are encouraged to sleep with the parents, have only breast milk, carrying a baby in a wrap/syrong, raising vegan children, etc etc, but aside from all of this, I'd recommend the book and I would purchase it myself.
Leaves out a lot...........2003-04-13
While this book does have many resources for parents trying to incorporate non-toxic and environmentally-friendly practices into their parenting, it assumes a very traditional Western approach to parenting, one in which one of the biggest jobs new parents face is acquiring the right STUFF to parent. Although there is a lot of information on cribs, there are few recommendations for parents who might want to co-sleep or have a family bed, such as three-sided cribs that attach to the parent's bed, or equipment to make the family bed safer. The book presents the pros and cons of cloth diapers vs. disposables but does not mention anything about natural infant hygiene or elimination communication. Even the cloth diaper section is pretty skimpy, about a page and a half. Nor is there much information on baby carrying and wearing products, such as the huge variety of fabric slings now available.
It's not that parents who want to protect the enviroment need to adopt all of these practices, but a book that is supposed to offer 'safe, practical and affordable baby care' for 'a livable planet' should at least mention some of these options in some depth and help make parents aware of them. This seems especially important in that these choices will determine what and how much you need to buy for your baby. If you plan to keep your baby in the same room or bed with you, you won't need worry about stripping lead paint in the baby's room. If you plan to use an infant potty after naps, you may not need to invest in a changing table. If you wear your baby in a sling for most of her first 18 months of life, you may not need a stroller, bassinett, playpen, walker or rocker.
Use this book as a helpful guide to finding good, natural baby products once you've researched the most eco-friendly parenting practices (somewhere else).
Great Book.......2000-04-27
I am not to good with words but this book is great for anyone that loves their child as well as the environment. It has websites all through the book if you want to buy some eco-friendly products. I really enjoyed this book and have learned alot from it.
