A Cat Care Manual.......2007-08-23
I find Anitra Frazier's "The New Natural Cat" an exellent reference. It offers good, common sense solutions to feeding, health, and behavior for your cat along with discriptions of diseases and injuries with suggestions for treatment. The book leans toward holistic solutions, but doesn't put down traditional treatments where needed.
The New Natural Cat: A complete Guide for Finicky owners.......2007-05-31
This is a wonderful reference book on how give the best care to your cat by useing natural products such as herbs and whole foods before you rush to give them conventional medicine and drugs. I volunteer as a foster mom to kittens until they can be adopted. I have bought over 10 of these books so far to give to all the new adopted parents(of course their are times when there is no substitute for a Vet's care). You can find anything that you want to concerning cats. I would also recommend Dr.Don Hamilton's book "HOMEOPATHIC CARE FOR CATS AND DOGS' as an excellent companion book. Each of these book instructs you on how to work with your pets immune system to keep them as healthy as they are meant to be. A testament to their advice is that my cat Abigail lived to be 23 years old.I highly recommend these books for the love of your cat.
Natural Health for Animals Too.......2007-05-21
Being macrobiotic myself I was looking for ways to bring up my new kittens in a healthier, more holistic way than I had with previous animals (when I, myself was not eating and living so well). This book provided me with all I wanted and more. I was looking for recipes and found them. I also found a wealth of information on how to communicate with cats and how they see the world as well as natural remedies for when they are less than in top form. Following the advice from this book and other books such as The Whole Pet Diet, and Foods Pets Die For, my cats are healthy with the shiniest, softest coats I've ever felt on a cat before. It's a wonderful book and the author, you can feel, has a real understanding of what life looks like from the cat's point of view. I would highly recommend it, and I feel if it is the only book your have about your cat it would probably be enough as it is so comprehensive.
Very entertaining and informative.......2007-01-11
I bought this book as a gift for my daughter (at her request). Her cat was having health and behavioral problems. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed reading the book from cover-to-cover and has implemented many of the ideas with success. She is constantly telling me about interesting things she has read in it and the entertaining writing style of the author and urges me to purchase a copy for myself.
The BEST book for any cat lover.......2006-02-05
I have refered to Anitra Frazier's "The New Natural Cat" as my "kitty bible" for many years. My own cats are now fourteen and fifteen years old, having been fed and cared for via Anitra's advice since they were a year, and a newborn. They are young, lively, playful and in supreme health. People who meet them can not believe their age when I tell them. Even my new vet, the first time she met my fifteen year old, guessed that she was only five or six and was astounded when she heard the cat's real age. I honestly believe that raising and caring for them naturally, and with the natural foods recommended by Anitra in this book, is a large part of their excellent health and youthful vitality.
If you have a cat, or if you simply love cats, do not hesitate to purchase a copy of this book.

An Interesting and Reliable Guide.......2004-10-05
It may be out of date, I don't know. When it comes to important matters, everyone should consult with a trusted veterinarian. But for emergency care, interest, and a general guide, I've raised four cats on this book. Everything, from warnings on what and what not to feed your cat and what plants you can and cannot have in the house to when to call your vet, is covered, well, and easy to find. The book could use a more extensive index, but it was a very convenient and affordable helpmate for an anxious mother.
Tuxedo was four weeks old when we brought him home, which we didn't know, because he was a barn cat, and nobody really knew how old they were. Twenty-four hours after we got him settled in, we discovered that baby had no teeth. So, there we were, desperately going through the library and the pet store, frantic to figure out why baby didn't use the bathroom, didn't eat, and was losing weight at an alarming rate.
Some books were more helpful, but we were poor, and some just didn't cover enough, and some covered TOO much. I got lost in extemperanious information, and couldn't find what I needed. This one was "just right." ;-) It gave me just enough to quiet my new mother fears, and help me answer all of my questions, without losing me in technical terms, and kept me from calling the vet every ten minutes.
Tuxedo is now 16 solid pounds, healthy as an ox, and well trained. He has welcomed three women into his family, and they've all been at different stages of health, and different ages, but this book has helped us get through them all. I keep it handy, and still, after four years, turn to it about once a month when I'm in over my head.
Old Info Out of Date.......2002-02-23
In 1996 when this book first appeared it offered current information and was one of the first to address "training" in cats and to promote early-age neutering. It is written in an engaging style and remains a good basic reference for first-time kitten owners. But in the seven years since publication, much has changed in the world of feline health care, such as vaccination recommendations, and the understanding of behavior and feline diseases. DO NOT rely on this book for health care advice.
Shojai's latest book, "COMPLETE KITTEN CARE" is a much better choice. This is the author's 18th pet care title and it has up-to-date medical information and advice based on Shojai's interviews with hundreds of veterinary experts. The training and behavior material comes from Shojai's hands-on personal experience with shelter cats and kittens, as well as insights from professional breeders.

Excellent resource for keeping your cat(s) healthy and happy........2005-11-26
Written by a veterinarian, this book provides detailed health advice as well as first-aid information for the wide variety of trouble your cat can get into. Some health emergencies simply cannot wait for treatment until one packs Fluffy in the car and drives to the Vet. This book provides valuable information to help you keep your cat alive en route to your Vet or animal hospital. From basic cuts and scrapes to being struck by lightning or bitten by a snake, a new cat owner might be surprised just how much trouble a curious cat can find. This book helped us better prepare change-averse cats for moves and realize the severe risk of heat-stroke posed after losing our air-conditioning due to a hurricane. The Cat Repair Book is not filled with cute cat pictures and feline pop-psychology, it is by and large a whiskers-to-tail primer on your cat's anatomy and health concerns written in plain English. A new parent today would (it is hoped) not fail to learn CPR; if your cat is a valued member of your family this is a worthy resource to keep at hand.

Adequate enough guide for new & wannabe cat owners.......2002-06-14
This is a collection of articles on the most important points of cat care, starting with selecting a cat. Several veterinarian/writers are represented here, so one will encounter slightly contradictory information and suggestions. For instance, one writer says it's best to adopt only one kitten from a litter so that it will bond better with the human, while another says it's good to adopt two from the litter as they will bond better together than with other cats. So, you takes your choice!
Basically, this book gives more in the way of guidelines than in specific information. You're given the basic nutritional requirements of both kittens and adult cats, and how to read the analysis on the food packages. You're given basic guidelines as to when to take your cat in for shots and a check-up exam. Emphasis is given on dental care (That's lots of fun...LOL) and why it's important. And there is information on the most common diseases to affect cats and how to recognize symptoms.
There's a lot of detailed information missing here, but it does give you the most important points to be aware of.
Book Description
Kids can re-create a long-ago world of kings, castles, jousts, jesters, damsels, magic fairies, and Robin Hood—all they need are their imaginations, materials they can find at home, and the activities in this book. Dressing up in a coat of armor made from plastic milk jugs, whipping up a batch of curds and whey, writing secret messages in invisible ink, and telling time with a sand glass made from soda bottles are just some of the fun projects. Every activity is illustrated, and sidebars highlight colorful facts about life hundreds of years ago.

Hands On ways for Kids to Re-Live the Middle Ages.......2001-08-18
We're a homeschooling family who've just finished up studying the Middle Ages. We're always looking for resources, just like this one, that let the kids make things and pretend. To get a real taste (literally!) of the way things were a thousand years ago.
The thing my wife and I like about Knights and Damsels, is that the kids can take charge of their own projects with only a little supervision from Mom & Dad. What a timesaver for homeschool parents.
Also, although there are some obvious compromises in costume-making and food preparation, there's still enough there to give our kids the "look and feel" of more primitive times, from making butter from scratch, to various costumes, to games kids (and grownups) played in medieval times. I bet they remember more, too, as their studies continue and they get older. And when they have an opportunity to dig deeper into this era academically, I'm betting they'll be pretty motivated.
If you want your kids to be excited about history, this hands-on, low maintenance book may be your answer.
Huzzah (Hooray) for this excellent medieval activities guide.......2000-04-25
Our outreach education company does interactive historypresentations and medieval theme birthday parties and we areconstantly recommending this book to both educators and parents alike. We suggest it as a primer for activities and decorations to go along with our presentations. Simple yet fun, this book lays out, in easy to follow steps, how to design, build, and play with the suggestions provided. It includes costuming, props, games, recipes, accessories... for ages up to about 12. It is not a historical treatise (it shows how to make a mirror from cardboard and aluminum foil rather than burnished copper for example) but is a fun way to "get the feel" of the time, if a bit fanciful. This book is a delight for the harried parent or teacher. GregRobin Smith and Cymbric Early-Smith.

THE FINAL EPISODES OF RATHBONE AS SHERLOCK HOLMES.......2007-01-25
This is the was the last of the set of radio programs where Rathbone and Bruce team up one last time. Rathbone was concerned about being typecasted and left radio for the newer medium TV. Bruce remained with another actor on radio, but it wasn't the same; ever again. Bruce died sudddenly in 1953 of a heart attack. Rathbone was in an almost constant state of mourning for more than 2 years after Bruce passed. The two had become the best of friends, playing pranks on the radio show, often during the live performances. One of the best was in character during a scene, Bruce/Watson) speaks after a "gunshot" "Look Holmes, there!" By mistake was heard the breaking of glass, Bruce/Watson adlibed to his line, "Holmes, the poor fellow, someone shot him and broke his glass of Perti wine." Rathbone/Holmes) chuckled his line trying regain composure. These are some great radio shows as timeless as the actors who portrayed them. Get the final set, you'll be glad you did.
Better than TV before bedtime.......2006-12-14
I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and enjoy the original stories and the many that have been written since the days of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These radio shows from the 1940's are great, they even have the commercials from the original broadcasts.
I like to turn on a cd when I am going to bed, turn out the light and drift of into 19th century London for my last few waking moments. It does sometimes take me a week or so before I have actually heard an entire cd.
The only down side is that my wife doesn't share my enthusiasm for Sherlock Holmes and can occasionally let her dislike of going to sleep to it be known.
Book Description
On Aug. 29, 1857, in the light of a three-quarter moon, James Metzger was savagely beaten by two assailants in a grove not far from his home. Two days later he died and his assailants, James Norris and William Armstrong, were arrested and charged with his murder. Norris was tried and convicted first. As William "Duff" Armstrong waited for his trial, his own father died. James Armstrong's deathbed wish was that Duff's mother, Hannah, engage the best lawyer possible to defend Duff. The best person Hannah could think of was a friend, a young lawyer from Springfield by the name of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln took the case and with that begins one of the oddest journeys Lincoln took on his trek towards immortality. What really happened? How much did the moon reveal? What did Lincoln really know?Walsh makes a strong case for viewing Honest Abe in a different light in this tale of murder and moonlight.

Wonderful Research -- Woeful Reasoning.......2007-03-03
Walsh does diligent spadework with the original sources and clears up many misconceptions about the famous "Almanac Trial." Unfortunately he engenders a few misconceptions himself. The greatest misconception he engenders is his portrayal of Lincoln as behaving in an ethically challenged fashion. Not so.
Walsh reports that Lincoln, in his investigation, told a witness not to tell him about inculpatory evidence against his client and then goes on to have the witness manufacture exculpatory evidence. Not so. Walsh serious misinterprets what was going on. One of Armstrong's friends stood ready to testify that the slunshot found at the crime scene was his, that he had set it aside and forgotten it at the scene, and that insofar as he knew, Armstrong never had it. The slungshot was allegedly used by Armstrong to beat the victim. The witness also would have testified that he saw Armstrong hit Metzger with a wagon hammer, not a slunshot, but Lincoln didn't inquire into this evidence and didn't present it at trial. Lincoln did nothing unethical. As the representative of the defendant, who has a Fifth Amendment Privilege, Lincoln was under no duty to disclose inculpatory evidence. He was quite possibly foolish in calling the witness because the prosecution might have wheedled the information out of the witness on cross, but that didn't happen.
Walsh then speculates that Lincoln told the witness to testify that he mislaid the slunshot and the witness obliged. This speculation is contrary to the probabilities. The witness was afraid he would be asked on cross if he saw Armstrong hit Metzger. If he had been asked, he would have admitted it. If he was such a liar as to make up a story about mislaying the slungshot, he would not have stuck at lying and saying he never saw Armstrong hit Metzger.
Walsh then claims that when the star witness for the prosecution disappeared, Lincoln personally had him hauled into court so he could cross examine the man. Not so. Lincoln would have been happy to have the witness, one Allen, not appear, because he was the heart and soul of the state's case. Without him, there was no testimony that Armstrong hit Metzger with anything more than his fist, which could not have produced the injury. Lincoln retrieved the wayward witness because he learned that Armstrong's family had hidden him to keep him from testifying. If Allen had failed to appear on his own, Lincoln would have been under no obligation to go get him. But that is not what happened, Lincoln's "allies" spirited the witness away and he could not be party to such a circumvention of justice. When he found out about the maneuver, he ordered them to bring Allen back.
Then Walsh claims Lincoln lied in final argument. Judging by the eyewitness reports, Lincoln said some things that would never be said in a modern courtroom, but the 1800's were a time of bombastic oratory. What Lincoln supposedly said was nothing more than that, bombast aimed at stirring up sympathy.
Walsh's book shows that Lincoln comported himself strictly within the bounds of legal ethics, but you have to ignore Walsh's off-the-mark analysis to see it. I'd give the book two stars if it weren't such a goldmine of information on the trial.
Lincoln helps a murderer get off........2004-06-02
Walsh certainly comes up with an interesting topic that has been bypassed by other historians. The case involves Duff Anderson and his use of a deadly weapon in killing a large man. Because of his friendship with the family, Abe Lincoln defended Duff in court and got him acquited of the charge of murder. In the trial itself, Abe may have used an incorrect almanac, and this was not challenged by the prosecution. Because of this, a guilty man may have went free. Walsh also questions other Lincoln cases in the book. This is all interesting reading, even though unproven.
I give the author credit in writing about a topic that has not been explored in great detail. He writes this as history, but there is not enough evidence here to convict Lincoln. Lincoln used the full extent of his powers to defend his client. At this stage, there is not enough documentation to prove he doctored the almanac. This is a quick short interesting read.
A Good Book Spoiled.......2003-08-01
This is nearly a very good book. Walsh has done credible research and his bibliography is helpful. He clarifys the issues in the almanac trial and provides a picture of Lincoln at work as a defense attorney as few have. BUT.. In his introduction Walsh says, "no fictional coloring has been added" and eveything "rests squarely on documented sources." If only that were so. The tone of the book is like an over-ripe romance novel. I counted two !s and five usues of italics for emphasis in the introduction alone. He virtually admits he can not prove any of his more florid conclusions. A defense attorney is not on a quest for the truth. He or she need only make the prosecution's case look uncertain, which is what Lincoln did. Walsh states that Lincoln could not help the man convicted of killing Metzer, "without endangering Duff [Lincoln's client.]"
Duff had already been aquitted. He could not have been tried for the same crime twice. It is a shame that with all the good work he did Walsh did not present the case in a factual matter. he could have raised very interesting ethical questions about the role of a defense attorney with a very probably guilty client. He did not.
Lincoln's Legal Ethics.......2003-01-07
I think this book is an interesting evocation of the ethical scruples of Lincoln as lawyer. Contrary to the conclusion drawn by the author, the sources he relies upon demonstrate that Lincoln was ethical in the zealous representation of his client, an accused murderer. Even under today's legal standards, Lincoln would have been correct to instruct a witness that he was only interested in the witness's ability to testify on a single factual aspect of the trial and to instruct the witness to tell him nothing else except the truth about that single fact. During his preparation for trial, when the witness tried to stray from his instructions and inform Lincoln of other observations, Lincoln would have been within his right to interrupt and remind him that he mustn't offer additional observations beyond the fact requested.
Even today we instruct juries that they may believe all, part, or none of a witness's testimony. Lawyers are held to no different standards in their use of witnesses at trial except lawyers may not offer a witness whose testimony the lawyer believes would commit a fraud upon the court. Lincoln never placed this witness on the stand to elicit any testimony other than what the witness stated to be the truth. Thus the claim that Lincoln "suborned perjury" is naive and insulting. For all that, I enjoyed the underlying research, and the author's exposition of it. It does strike me that consultation with an attorney would have vastly improved the history and dampened the sensationalism.
An embarassment to Lincoln scholarship.......2000-10-04
"Moonlight" by John Walsh is an embarassment to honest Lincoln scholarship. It is a book with enormous potential to illustrate one of Abraham Lincoln's most famous legal cases, but instead it weaves a narrative feculent with specious logic; the factual assertions of unknown, unknowable and unproveable theories; and assumption after assumption after assumption. Walsh proves some important points, and makes good use of some primary and secondary sources. He offers a detailed account of the murder, the trial and the outcome that cannot be found elsewhere. However, the positive attributes of the book become overshadowed by Walsh's outrageous assertions of supposition as fact, his assertions without qualification or citation, and his complete reliance, as unassailable proof and fact, on the second-hand interview of a trial juror 50 years after the trial. More than once Walsh makes unknowable and unproveable assertions, then admits he can't prove them, then dismisses this serious circumstance as unimportant. For example: "That the charge was levelled during Lincoln's senatorial campaign of 1858 is stated in many sources but I have not been able to document it." (p 155) "Moonlight" is a lost opportunity. The frighteningly childish writing quality, the fanciful indulgences, suppositions, specious logic, appearance of questionable sources and Walsh's own obvious insularity in his investigative objective, make this book a sham, and an insult to the field of historical research.

Book Description
Between Moonlight and Murder is a story of the violence and passions that play out in rural Illinois in the late19th century. The story is about the destruction of not only the lives of a young, beautiful woman and a prominent married man and his family, but also the unconscionable abuse of power by a politically ambitious prosecutor, the bitter frustration of a rejected fiancé, and an unethical conduct of the defense lawyer. The story opens with farm wife Kate Dewitt's discovery of a body along the side of the Blind Lane road. The narrative then shifts to the background of the family of Billy Burns, a wounded, Confederate veteran who made his home in St. Elmo after spending the last months of the American Civil War in a Yankee prisoner-of-war camp in Tennessee. Billy's alcoholism aggravates his already malicious, cruel nature. His brutal treatment of his wife, Flora Jane, results in her death, and his remarriage to the widow, Millicent Zimmer, appears to be following the same course, until Millie unexpectedly stands up to him. Missouri - called Zura - is a daughter of Billy Burns. She leaves her fathers house to escape his drunkenness and brutality and to seek her fortune in the larger communities in the North. As the account proceeds, the focus shifts to the family of Orrin Carpenter, a married man of wealth and prestige and the father of two teenage daughters. An illicit relationship develops between Zura and Orrin while Zura is employed as a domestic servant in the Carpenter home. Zura's subsequent pregnancy threatens Orrin's social position and business, and soon after his failure to provide for an abortion for her, Zura is found murdered in lonely Blind Lane. Orrin becomes the chief suspect in Zura's murder and is hounded by the state prosecutor in order to forward his own political career. Detectives for the state set to work to gather evidence against Orrin. These detectives include an honest, but tough ex-policeman; a confidence man from Savannah, Georgia; and a brilliant, but eccentric criminalist who communicates with his dead mother and is guided by her advice. All of this takes place in a town that is too self-righteous and judgmental to forgive and whose Victorian morality is evidenced by its treatment of Orrin Carpenter during and after his subsequent trial for the murder of Missouri Burns.

Book Description
"Infant Potty Basics" teaches you all you need to know to get started with a gentle and gradual means of toilet learning that is used in many non-Western societies. The guidelines and photos will help you learn your baby's elimination communication and comfy in-arms potty positions. Healthy infants are aware of this bodily function and can learn to respond to it the early months of life.
Pregnant moms and new parents: Enjoy learning this safe, cozy, hygienic, natural and loving method! The ideal time to start is sometime between birth and 4-5 months, but you can start at any age up to about 2 years. The book contains a chapter for late-starters who start after 6 months.
Infant pottying should NOT be confused with the "early toilet training" method used in Western countries from approximately 1900-1950. This older method had a very different focus and approach, and unfortunately has led many to conclude that any form of early toilet learning is bad. But infant pottying differs in that it is based on babies' natural elimination timing and rhythms. It promotes early bonding and communication, and does NOT focus on rushing toilet learning. In addition, it reduces/eliminates diapers, protects the environment, and conserves natural & financial resources.
One of the nicest things about infant pottying is that parents and babies enjoy much close contact since babies must be cradled in your arms several times a day at potty time. This practice is ideal for breastfeeding moms and/or parents who plan to raise their children during their baby's first year of life, and for "tightwad" parents. It is an ideal way for fathers to be closely involved with their infants. Your baby is ready if you are!

Great to have just "the basics" without all the other stuff.......2007-04-06
As a new mom, it was great to have a book that introduced this concept in a really concise way. Extensive background information found in some other books is interesting, but not if you're trying to fit it in during naptime! Since I read this "basics" book, I also read "Diaper Free" by Ingrid Bauer. Despite that fact that I really enjoyed "Diaper Free," I was really glad that I got this Potty Basics book first since it was so concise and told me everything I needed to know to get started.
It really does work! We started when our daughter was 3 months old, and haven't had to change a poopy diaper since. Peeing is another matter, but we're catching about half of them every day. Definitely a technique worth trying--even if you only do it "part time" for the easy catches after naps and such.
Very helpful with my infant.......2007-02-08
Though I don't do everything exactly as Laurie Boucke teaches in her book, I have found this method of dealing with elimination to be a good experience with my first (and only) child who is currenlty 8 months old. We started IPT a few days after bringing her home from the hospital, and the book is what taught me and gave me the confidence to try it in the first place. My mom and husband were very supportive of trying out this method, so that was really the key to getting it started. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning more about IPT, and it isn't overwhelming because it gives you the basics in a straighforward way.
