THE LABRADOR BREEDERS HANDBOOK.......2003-08-22
This book was the first book that approached the subject of genetic coding with such a clearity that I was thrilled to read something on this subject that I could finally understand. Thank-you Debby for such a helpful book.

Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys & Arans.......2007-05-20
I was surprised at the detailing in this book. It has a wonderful history of the patterns and the areas to which each is specific. The patterns are divided into those places they originated and then what styles as well as specific stitches. Found it very intersting and the book was in excellent shape. I'm very pleased with it.
Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys & Aran.......2006-09-21
This book is an interesting book about the history of Guernsey, Jerseys, and Arans that also includes patterns and designs of classic sweaters. Many of the patterns can be updated for todays sweaters.
I must confess that I enjoy knitting cables and twist stitch patterns. The Aran section in the back of the book appeals to me more than the first 2/3rds of the book. This may not be true for another person.
This book is worth having in your knitting library...especially if you enjoy reading about the history of knitting in the different regions.
Dover saves vital crafts again.......2006-08-05
Once more Dover Publishing steps in to insure that good books whose copyright have expired don't simply go out of print forever.
Thompson's book on knitting patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys, & Arans is the result of hundreds of hours of research around the coasts of the British Isles, where each seaport had its own traditional sweater pattern. While this was useful in recognizing drowned sailors, it also is part of the British Folk tradition, which is rapidly vanishing in the face of modern day pursuits, where the young have no time for the old ways. This book preserves many of the traditional patterns of knitting sweaters, called Guernseys, Jerseys, and Arans for the islands on which they originated, so modern knitters can make sweaters in the old patterns, before they are lost forever. A great pattern book for the dedicated knitter, it also preserves these traditional patterns for the time when these sweaters are no longer commonly worn, and stands as an archaeological work of preservation.

Aran Patterns and reviews.......2006-03-04
This is a very interesting book, and there is knowledge in this book that makes the reader very much aware of how the patterns evolved, and when.
I was pleasantly surprised and will mark it as among my favourites because of this knowledge. It really had me thinking about the people from years ago making up those terrific patterns and knitting them from scratch
Peek into knitting history.......2004-11-05
I love this book! It is part knitting book, part travelogue and very funny. It not only has many authentic patterns but tells the tale of a determined woman trying to collect patterns from real fishermen. A great read! I can't wait to make all the sweaters. A small intro helps the American knitter decode the English instructions and materials notes, which are somewhat difficult to grasp.

Beautiful Story fine for Ages 4+.......2007-01-01
Our family loves Tomie dePaola books, and this is one of his most beautiful. While I agree with one reviewer that it's not appropriate for two year olds, it really was fine for my 4 year old. As that same reviewer writes, the book's heroine, a child, sacrifices the last tangible memory of her family. However, this is shown as an heroic act of unselfish love--and her reward is that from that day on, the land is filled with tangible memories of her family's love in the form of the Bluebonnet flowers.
My four year old asked many questions as I read the story, and my answers--and of course the story itself--showed him how even a child can be heroic--and that heroism does not need to involve swords and muscle--it can simply take the form of an unselfish act.
Five Stars from a Texan.......2004-01-25
As a Texan, I had to have this book for my 4 month girl. Obviously, she is too young to understand the text, but as soon as she is old enough I will not hesitate to continue reading this book to her. It is so beautifully written and the illustrations are wonderful, as Tomie dePaola's illustrations always are. The lessons of selflessness and sacrifice are invaluable. And it gives a perfect opportunity to discuss such realities of life as being orphaned and loneliness in a non-threatening way if the proper discussion between parent and child accompanies the book.
Happy Customer.......2003-05-30
Wonderful prompt service. Couldn't be happier. Book was in wonderful condition!
This was my favorite story when..........2003-03-28
This was my favorite story when I was a child. I love how it tells of a young girl who chooses to give up something she loves for her family and people... I read this book whenever I could in school. Now that I teach pre school I get to share the beauty of this story with my class and they love it too...In Texas you see them everywhere in late March to early May. I use to think it was funny but now I have to wonder why, when you see a bluebonnet an Indian paintbrush isn't that far away?
A sad but inspiring and very beautiful story........2002-02-28
Every spring, throughout central Texas where I live, we are blessed with one of mother nature's great floral displays--Texas Wildflower Season. For three to four weeks in April and May the countryside--as far as one can see in all directions--is a rainbow of color as billions of wild flows bloom. Chief among these are the Bluebonnets, the Sate Flower of Texas.
The Legend of the Bluebonnet is the retelling of the old Indian legend of how this event came to occur. It relates the story of She-Who-is-Alone, an orphaned Indian girl being raised by her tribe during a time of extreme drought and famine. This young girl is the sole remaining member of her family--the others have all died in the famine.
The tribe calls upon the Shaman to commune with the Great Spirits to divine what it is the People must do to regain harmony with nature. The Shaman states that a "great sacrifice" needs to be made. How She-Who-is-Alone acts upon that message is how the Bluebonnets come to be ion Texas.
This is a very sad and hear-rending story in large part, though it is also incredibly heartwarming and inspiring as well.
This has always been one of my kid's favorite books--my wife's and mine as well. However, it is probably a book best left to a bit older child--say 8 and above. Once you start reading it though, you will never stop. You will read it many time to your children--and your grandchildren.
This book is a treasure.

Really cute way to introduce kids to Texas' symbols........1999-04-14
I checked this book out at the public library during a "Texas" unit in my first grade classroom. The book really enhanced our study of Texas symbols such as the state seal, the state tree, the state bird, the state flower, the flag, the capitol, etc. A great book for Texas children - natives or "transplants"! Thanks to you Mary Brooke Casad!

AN ANSWER TO A PARENT'S PRAYER!.......2007-06-27
I bought this book recently to see if there was anything I could do to bring Peace into our chaotic household, and have found it to be amazingly accurate and very user-friendly. As I read the first few chapters, I was literally wondering if they had installed secret cameras in my house, because the authors were describing our life so accurately. With 5 children under the age of 12, of course there is always going to be some chaos, but when you add ADHD and BiPolar Disorder to the mix, it becomes a whole different story. The tips in each chapter and the 'Pointers for Parenting' were extremely helpful, but I especially liked that they included quotes from the author's son, who also struggled with ADHD- it was great to read a child's perspective on things. I highly recommend this book to any parent out there with a special needs child, or just a plain old defiant adolescent. It has made a positive impact on our lives, and I am very thankful to have found it.
Very comforting.......2007-05-18
I really thought this was a great book. Makes you feel like there are others who are having the same difficulties as you. Had many helpful ideas that really work.
helpful ideas.......2005-10-20
If you can get past the expectations of the author/mother there are a lot of great ideas to help life go smoother at home. Using calendars, lists for morning & evening preparations, and incentives more often than punishments has made life in our home a lot more peaceful!
This Book is AMAZING!.......2005-09-01
I have read so many books on this subject and this is the only one that tackles the day to day issues that many books do not. This book was loaded with practical suggestions and methods that restore calm, which is so important for children with ADHD and autistic spectrum disorders. One of the main reasons I loved this book is because it truly helps with discipline. We are so quick to dismiss certain behavior because we blame it on their condition, when in fact, they crave it probably more than a typical child. I was really surprised by the negative review, especially since every book may not mirror your child's predicament. Guess what, rules are important and there will be a day when we have to let our children into society and rules apply there too! As a parent with a child with special needs, I can tell you that we read so many things until it's hard to make sense of it all. This book was nothing short of inspirational and if you can take anything from it, it is that this a long hard journey for both parent and child, and we can certainly learn ways to diffuse situations and let them have the security and childhood that every child deserves. I highly recommend this book. It is practical, positive and reassuring for a stress-out parent. I paid full price and it was worth every penny!
