Definitely a book for the Quarter Horse fan!.......1999-11-29
I found this book to be very interesting and informative, if a bit dry in areas. It was a wonderful insight to the people who help to shape the Quarter Horse world.

This is a real nice book, interesting an full of hard to find pictures, a must for quarter horse people.

His horse gear, a bedroll and a warbag containing a change or two of clothes - these worldly goods were about all the old-time ranch hand could call his own. They were prized possessions, though, and together were usually referred to as "my forty year' gatherins."

A book for my permanent libary.......2006-01-14
I've met Spike's decendents, stayed at their ranch, and this is how I discovered these books by Spike Van Cleve around ten years ago. They are so good, I had to share them with friends and I loaned them out. Since they have disappeared, I need to buy them again! These are timeless stories that show the true flavor of the people and the country. I don't buy many books--but these I will buy twice.

THIS IS A VERY FUNNY AND DANG GOOD READ IF YOU LOVE HORSES
AND THE WIDE OPEN COUNTRY OF MONTANA AND WYOMING. HE LETS YOU IN ON HOW HE UNDERSTANDS HORSES AND TELLS OF SOME WILD DAYS IN THE SADDLE.THERE ARE SOME GREAT DUDE RANCH STORIES ABOUT DIFFERENT GUESTS.IF HE WERE STILL ALIVE I WOULD DEFINITELY WANT TO GO TO HIS.HE IS A SPECIAL,COLORFUL AND DOWN HOME, HILARIOUS GUY.

This book describes the people, the attitude, and the lifestyle of Montana - from 1870 until today. The Crazy Mountains continue to evoke the same vast, colorful emotions from those of us who have had the priviledge to grow up beneath them. A must read for anybody who has lived in Montana - and a "should read" for anybody else. A colorful, vivid reminder of home - one of my favorites.

I lived in Montana for two years and a friend suggested I read this book. I bought a copy and could not put it down. After I finished it two days later, I bought his other book "A Day Late And A Dollar Short". Ten years later, I am still reading them. Spike doesn't just tell you a story, you live it. If you have any interest at all in ranch life, horses, family, humor, or Montana history; these should be on your list. You'll learn what "slaunchwise" humor and "going to the mountains" is all about.
It's unfortunate that he only wrote two books.
As your friend and fellow author put it, I too, "hope God gives you a horse" Spike.
An excellent story of everyday life in Melville, Montana~.......1999-11-18
This book is an excellent piece of work. I probably am somewhat biased as like the author, I too spent my formative years in the Big Open of Eastern Montana. I can certainly sympathize and relate to alot of what old Spike says about nature, family and ranch life in general.

It's ok, but not worth the price.......2006-12-13
For a book of this price, I was expecting the photos of the horses to be in color. There are plenty of photos, but the only color is on the front & back cover. It's ok, but for this price, Western Horseman could do better.

Tongue-in-cheek fun.......2001-10-01
New Jersey is known more for things it might prefer to be forgotten (parkway and turnpike exit jokes, toxic waste dump sites)than for its contributions. "New Jersey Firsts" sticks mostly to the positive and eccentric side of the Garden State's contributions to History, Sports, Science, Food and more.
Among the more interesting stories are traffic circles, the infamous "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast (First Martian attack)and Bill Haley, the disputed father of rock n roll(first Rock n roll star). From Springsteen to cranberry bogs to the Jersey shore, NJ's brighter side shines through.

I thought I knew alot about by home state until I read the book. What a surprise to learn that I did not know as much as I thought I knew. It is informative without being a drag. Every native of New Jersey and/or resident of the State needs to have a copy of "New Jersey Firsts" in their personal library.

This is a great little book packed with information that anyone with ties to New Jersey would find interesting. I bought it as a father's day gift. It has a nice blend of information, some of it light and some serious. The photos are fantastic. Some of the entries I was well aware of, but most were news to me. All in all, it is an entertaining book that I think appeals to a very wide audience.

After reading several pregnancy books that either focused way too much on the negatives of pregnancy, or were too flippant and breezy about pregnancy, reading a book like this was a huge relief. Yes, it is somewhat clinical. But frankly, I would rather read a book with a neutral, clinical perspective. It was reassuring in a way. This book does not spend an inordinate amount of time talking about the things that can go wrong with your pregnancy, although it does cover that subject adequately. It does spend a lot of time explaining the medical terminology your doctor will use to talk about your pregnancy with you. That to me was helpful.
There is also a whole chapter on breastfeeding, it's not authoritative, but it does contain helpful information. The explanation about the pain relief options available to you during labor and childbirth is excellent and both reassuring and informative.
All in all, I recommend this book as an excellent reference if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Since it has been my experience that you usually have to buy more than one pregnancy book to get all of the information you seek about pregnancy and related issues, I found this book to be direct and easy to read. It covers issues that other popular books do not. Since every person is different, I believe it is impossible to find a book that covers every concern you may have. This book is very informative, without being difficult to understand. The fact that it is written by The American College of Ob and Gyn helps too.
Covers the basics.......2002-01-05
This book is pretty simple and basic. It covers all areas of pregnancy but not too much in depth. Its a good book if you want a basic book to refere to for things. Or you are pregnant for the first time and need to learn all the basics. I purchased other books along with this one for more in depth info on matters that were important to me. Overall this book is easy to read and I enjoyed reading it to review the basic stuff I need to know about pregnancy.

This book was nice to read, but a little boring. If you listened in biology class then this book is not for you. Just your basic stuff really. If you want a good informative read with really helpful information (especially for 1st timers) then Conception, Pregnancy and Birth (Dr. Miriam Stoppard) is a wonderful book, with helpful information on excersise, newborn care and wonderful pictures!!

I was a little disappointed with this book. I was looking for user-friendly, in depth information, and it didn't quite make it. Although it is more recent than John Sussman's books, it is certainly not easier to read.

Good for first time Dads. Moms, look elsewhere........2006-09-18
This book is far too cursory for a first time mom. I'm giving it three stars because it is, however, a good read for first time Dads. It gives just enough info for Dads to better understand what their partners are going through without going into all the "gory details". Mom, you're going to want all those details and a much more in-depth volume on child bearing. I would recommend "Your Pregnancy Week By Week" or the perennial favorite, "What to Expect When You're Expecting" instead.
JAM PACKED with lots of important information.......2001-01-24
I actually read this book for the first time on loan from my OB/GYN. It has so much great information from prenatal testing (what they test for and how the tests are performed), prenatal care, all the information you need on your growing belly and baby to delivery and postpartum care. It has a glossary for terms used by doctors. I really found this book to be quite informative and since I bought my own copy, I have it with me all the time. You can also log your pregnancy and it has height and weight charts for you baby as well! It's a great book!
