Book Description

In the late 1960s, Eliot Wigginton and his students created the magazine Foxfire in an effort to record and preserve the traditional folk culture of the Southern Appalachians. This is the original book compilation of Foxfire material which introduces Aunt Arie and her contemporaries and includes log cabin building, hog dressing, snake lore, mountain crafts and food, and "other affairs of plain living."

4 out of 5 stars Reliving the Past.......2007-09-04

If you are interested in learning how our forefathers lived without the modern day conveniences that we enjoy today, this book is a must read. You will learn how they survived without much income and you could learn something beneficial that you never knew.

5 out of 5 stars PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THIS GENRE.......2007-03-26

The Foxfire books are a wonderful thing and we are so lucky to have them. Many of the ways, crafts, planting lore, animal lore, and as the book says "affairs of plain living" are preserved here. This particular volume includes different wood and it's uses, Mountain Recipes, Slaughtering Hogs, weather signs faith healing and so very, very much more. this is a wonderful recording of life the way it was and probably never will be again. The book is quite well written and has faithfully recorded even the dialect of these wonderful people, from which so many of us sprung. That is a big part of the charm of these works. This book includes actual interviews with folks from that region of the country which I am sure are long dead now. Their knowledge would be completely lost without works such as this. Another generation or two and it will all be completely gone. Thank goodness we have recordings such as this. Recommend this one highly.

1 out of 5 stars NO IDEA what they're saying.......2007-01-18

I heard about this book and thought, "OH I'm from the South and this book will be lovely to read to find out about how things used to be." And I would probably have been right if I could have made out what they were talking about. The slang is much too thick for me. I'm not sure anyone could understand it except people who actually are from this region. Thumbs down for no translation.

5 out of 5 stars buy it and use it.......2006-06-18

Don't get me wrong the entire series is amazing. Book one is the best and one of the more practical. The chapter on log cabin building was my inspiration to build my own cabin. At least 75% of the cabin was directions from this very book. Reading a Foxfire (any of them) does something to you that's hard to explain. I think of Foxfire books as almost a self-help guide that teaches you how to slow down for a minute. I recommend this book for anybody with high blood pressure or some kind of anxiety problem. It's therapeutic. These students met some really neat people of Appalachia. We can't let this way of life fade away as it almost has in my hometown, Knoxville.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible resource of "oldtimer" wisdom.......2006-04-15

I've inherited the first seven, origional print books from my dad, and bought 8 and 9 for myself just a year ago, and I must say that I've always enjoyed reading these books. The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).

I rate this book right up there with Carla Emery's books, as a great resource for folks trying to get back to a more self-sufficient way of life and providing for themselves, their families, and even friends & neighbours. These books definitely give a sense of old-fashioned camaraderie and willingness to help your neighbour in time of need (and in times of plenty).

I bought this for my 7 year old sister...she loves it! She is learning about science without even knowing it and loves making the different concoctions!

5 out of 5 stars Fun for Kids seven and up.......2001-07-26

"The incredible secret formula book" gives plenty of neat little things to keep you and your kids busy on those boring summer days.

Most of the things in this book use items you probably all ready have in your home: paper, corn starch, sugar and various food items.

This book details things like How to make invisible ink or disappering ink. If that doesn't interest you there's making chalk out of egg shells or how to recylce paper. you can even make "Mutant slime" a kids favorite. Don't like mutant Slime? how 'bout psylly slime or miss muppet slime? victal slime or udderly Gross slime? lots of fun for kids and thier mom and or dad.

5 out of 5 stars Kids' Favorite.......2001-07-06

This book has become my children's favorite. It is full of cheap ideas that the kid's love to experiment with. I would recommend this book to all parents.

    Product Description

Bead Crochet Snakes is a goldmine for beadwork enthusiasts, scholars, and antique collectors. It is the only book to offer an extended, illustrated history of bead crochet snakes and five patterns for beaders who want to crochet their own snakes. The book's extensive photos, clear charts, and detailed instructions made Bead Crochet Snakes a must for anyone curious about the rich history of these wonderful objects.

Bead Crochet Snakes illustrates how these beautiful, shiny serpents fit into the rich trdition of bead crochet as practised in the Ottoman Empire and neighboring countries like Bulgaria, Greece, and Macedonia. It also explains how the snakes were constructed, the fascinating story of snakes made by Turkish prisoners of war during World War I, and how to tell those snakes from others made later.

Beaders can gain inspiration from the many photos of bead crochet items as well as make their own bead crochet snakes to exhibit or wear. Patterns are provided for a snake necklace with a loopy tail, a rattlesnake necklace, two matching bracelets, and a memory wire snake bracelet. The projects will also teach beaders an alternative stringing method, the bead single crochet stitch, increasing and decreasing beads, crocheting on two sides of a foundation chain, and two methods of fastening on a new thread.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars interesting bead crochet information.......2007-09-26

If you are interested in bead crochet, this book will fascinate you. The examples of bead crochet snakes shown are very interesting. I got a lot of ideas from this book. Unfortunately, the projects with charts are not as interesting as the pictures of completed snakes. I would have liked charts of some of the segments of the completed snakes rather than the projects. I don't think that I will make any snakes, but the book is wonderful, nonetheless.

                Book Description

An art historian and practicing fiber artist, author Ann Feitelson has visited the Shetland Islands often to bring this distinctive knitting style to life. The background sections are lavishly illustrated with color photographs of historic Fair Isle garments; Fair Isle color theory is demonstrated with actual knitted samples; and the more than 20 original Fair Isle garments by Feitelson are illustrated with both color photos and color charts.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Isle Knitting.......2007-09-10

I really enjoyed looking at the different patterns and getting ideas for the different projects that one can put together. Ann has put a well detailed and informative book together that even a beginner can follow.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for any serious knitter!.......2007-01-14

This book gives you all of the information necessary to begin knitting Fair Isle patterns on your own. A wealth of information and a good read besides. Easy to follow instructions and suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars Great information .......2007-01-02

The information on the use of color and pattern in fair isle is very useful; there are lots of color examples showing how the colors work in various ways. Good job on the history too with great illustrations. Only thing missing for me is charted designs to help design your own. Overall it's a great book and I'm using it already for a project.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable book on Fair Isle and Shetland knitting.......2006-05-07

This book is a classic. Ms. Feitelson starts off by laying out the history of Fair Isle knitting and progresses to technique and color theory. The patterns that she provided are beautiful in terms of fit and silhouette, not to mention color choices and pattern designs. I have knitted a few Fair Isle articles and I wish I had bought this book first before knitting my caps and socks. This book is a must-have for anybody wishing to embark on the wonderful journey of Fair Isle and Shetland knitting.

5 out of 5 stars Fad or classic resurgent.......2006-01-20

At this time it looks as though the art of Fair Isle is making a huge comeback. Books that are out of print are selling for ten times the original price. Old magazines are being sought in every nook and cranny. Newer yarns are now colored to automatically create Fair Isle color patterns.

This particular book was written by Ann Feitelson who spent considerable time on the Shetland Islands and short of being a native is the closes you will get to the History, Technique, and Color & Patterns in the art of Fair Isle Knitting.

This book is more than just patterns; yet there are some classics of socks, gloves, mittens, scarves, and mostly swatters. The real worth that makes this book stand out from the others is the history with pictures in monochrome and color.

You may have to learn a few new terms:
                Needles = Wires
                Cast On = Lay on
                Stitch = Loop

A few of the garments also have different names. But their purpose is unmistakable.

This book besides being practical is a great addition to any library.

                          Product Description

In Hilary Flower’s second book, ADVENTURES IN GENTLE DISCIPLINE, she allows the reader to explore goals of gentle discipline, rewards for both child and parent, and what it looks like in action. Hilary debunks myths about the effectiveness of gentle discipline methods while empowering parents to find ways to make gentle discipline work for both themselves and their children. With creativity, courage, and commitment, each parent and child can develop their own unique way of engaging in gentle discipline. Gentle discipline is not a far off standard for us to meet but an imperfect, lively and richly meaningful way of communicating with our children. Although experts can offer theories, this book proves that parents themselves have a great deal to offer other parents in regard to this incredibly worthwhile—and revolutionary!—way of guiding young children. Line drawings capture small scenes from the journey of parenting and personal stories from a variety of mothers show creative adaptations of gentle discipline methods in different families.

5 out of 5 stars great for new parents.......2007-08-04

Hilary Flower collected suggestions and strategies from lots of different parents and presents them here. She focuses on toddlers as she says that is what new parents need. As the first-time mother of a soon-to-be two-year-old, I agree! I have several books with sound philosophy but I think this is the book that has the best concrete strategies for dealing constructively with your little ones.

I find myself applying this book to parenting situations on a daily basis. This book is a must read for parents who approach discipline with a desire to nuture rather than punish. Ms. Flowers has written a timeless resource for parents everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable book and a "must-read" for new parents.......2006-03-07

In Adventures In Gentle Discipline: A Parent-To-Parent Guide, author Hilary Flower allows the reader to explore the goals of a gentle discipline, rewarding both the child and the parent. In explanation of her own theory of discipline, Hilary clarifies the reader regarding how other disciplines may not be as effective, if not abusive as well. Adventures In Gentle Discipline is an invaluable book and a "must-read" for new parents.

5 out of 5 stars A discipline guide that every parent should read.......2005-12-31

Hilary Flower has written a wonderfully down-to-earth and real guide to gentle discipline -- a book that every parent will be able to relate to and that every parent would benefit from reading.

Unlike some other books in this genre that leave you feeling like you could never measure up to the author's standards of parenting perfection -- and that can therefore end up taking a toll on your parenting self-esteem -- "Adventures in Gentle Discipline" is empowering and, above all, inspiring.

By reading about how real parents have found practical ways to apply the basic principles of gentle discipline to everyday situations that you, the reader, can relate to, and by including chapters about parenting mistakes and how you can get yourself back on track discipline-wise when those parenting faux pas inevitably occur, Hilary Flower gives her readers the wonderfully liberating message that you don't have to be perfect to be a parent (thankfully) and that it's normal for parents to learn alongside their kids.

Learning from the experiences of other parents can be invaluable, both in terms of helping us to come up with new ways of dealing with particular parenting challenges and in helping us to develop a unique parenting style that works for ourselves and our children. This book takes that approach by bringing together the experiences of the true experts on gentle discipline: parents who have used this discipline method.

I highly recommend this book to other parents.

5 out of 5 stars An Empathetic Parenting Book.......2005-11-10

From my review at Hylands Homeopathy, Rx:Chat Motherhood (www.hylands.com/forums/): Sometimes it's easier to focus on the parts of parenting that don't work, the times that are hard and frustrating. In contrast, I've been enjoying reading Hilary Flower's book "Adventures in Gentle Discipline." It's subtitled "A Parent-to-Parent Guide," and one thing I love is that it's filled with stories and statements by real and actual moms. Sure, some of them come off as too saintly for me, the type of mom who never raises her voice, who unlike me never gets frustrated or impatient. But that's a small percentage, and balanced by personal essays near the end that are exruciatingly honest, whether about being raised with very strict discipline and threats of violence, or another by a mom who confesses hitting her child, even though she doesn't believe that anyone should ever hit their child.

I've liked opening the book to random pages and reading sentences like "There will always be someone to tell you that you are being too strict, and someone else to say that you are being too lenient." Don't we all need to hear reassurances like this along the way? The book is so down to earth, so understanding that as parents doing our best we try hard, but, as Flower writes, "No matter how proactive you are, you can count on parenting, childhood, and life in general to be messy anway."

Since I tend to be the kind of parent who gets frustrated and says things like "If you do that one more time you will never ever eat dinner at my table again," it's helpful to be reminded that fanciful ultimata like this just don't work (though they may feel good for the moment before my daughter keeps on rocking the chair on two legs, or smashing ranch dressing into the placemat, or whining, or whatever else she's been doing to drive me crazy). Flower reminds us to empathize, be gentle, and to extend the benefit of the doubt, but within a framework that still wants kids to behave and to listen to us. The many stories give us lots of possibilities to try.And what is gentle discipline? "Gentle Discipline means, quite simply, placing empathy and respect at the very center of your parenting." It may not be that different from what many of us do. However, I appreciate the chance to be reminded of my ideals, and to be supported as a parent by an author and book that itself is kind and unscolding, that is, a book that places empathy and respect at its center.
