Book Description
-Written in an easy anecdotal style with plenty of examples to illustrate the points being made
-Based on the author's many years of experience in keeping ferrets
Graham Wellstead's long experience in keeping, breeding and working ferrets makes this an invaluable guide for the beginner and novice handler.
Realizing that the passing down of information on ferrets between generations was in danger of dying out and finding little written on the subject, the author was inspired to write this book. Since it was first published, ferret keeping has grown in popularity and The Ferret and Ferreting Guide, written in an easy, humorous style, includes anecdotes drawn from the author's many years of experience.
Advice is given on selecting ferrets, their care, feeding and housing, along with how to breed them. Training ferrets to hunt and the techniques and use of equipment is fully described. In addition, this book includes a guide to the legal aspects of hunting.

Fascinating information on training ferrets to hunt.......2000-09-27
I am not a hunter, but I do have pet ferrets, and am fascinated with all aspects of the domestic ferret. In England, where an overabundance of rabbit warrens actually cause property and environmental damage, ferrets are used in hunting rabbits. McKay presents a wealth of information on training ferrets for hunting, the equipment used, retrieval of ferrets in rabbit holes, as well as more mundane matters such as where to hunt. Most of the photographs illustrate the points made in the accompanying text. The squeamish should be forewarned that this is a hands on book about hunting, and some of the photographs graphically depict dead bunnies and very excited ferrets, which is completely appropriate for the title. I found this book to be an enjoyable introduction into the art of ferreting, which is practiced almost exclusively over the water.

Book Description
While a full-sized scrapbook can take months to put together, the charming gift scrapbooks in this guide can be created in a few days, allowing scrapbooks to easily share their craft with those they care about most.
Pam Klassen, a long-time editor for Memory Makers, teaches readers how to construct small-format scrapbooks, perfect for gifts, through concepting the gift book while maintaining quality and creativity. Offering readers dozens of dynamic ideas for themed albums, including books for new babies, weddings, teachers, and anniversaries, this guide provides scrapbookers of all skill levels with valuable techniques and inspiring ideas.

Quick Scrapbooking Ideas for Gifts.......2006-11-16
The book shows a good variety of theme and specialty scrapbooks suitable for gift giving. Techniques include mini-albums, flip calendars, and other novel ways to document an event or honor an individual. Being new to scrapbooking, some of the instructions were too brief for me and didn't always clarify terms or show detailed enough examples.
Still there are plenty of ideas to be gained. Each page shows two or three colorful album pages.
Don't judge a book by its cover..........2004-12-21
I bought this off of Amazon without getting a chance to actually look inside of it first, so I was going by 1) other reviews, 2) the description and 3) the cover. After looking over all of these, it sounded like the book might have some interesting, fresh, "funky" ideas for gift books. So I ordered it. When I got it, though, I was quite disappointed. It DOES have some fresh ideas... *some*. There is one chapter that contains these, but most of the book consists of what I think to be rather typical scrapbooking. Nothing wrong with that, if that's your thing... but it isn't mine, and everything I saw really led me to expect something more interesting. I guess I should have expected a typical scrapbook book, since it is from Memory Makers. I have a few issues of their magazine, and the items featured in that are a lot more interesting that most of what I saw in this book.
Still not a book I mind owning, but not what I expected. I might have paid $4 or $5 for this used, but I would never have paid this price for it new had I actually seen the inside first.
So, buyer beware... if you're into fresh, funky, vibrant, altered sorts of art... the cover is a bit deceiving, and this book may not be for you. Get a look at it, at a library or a bookstore, before you buy!

A must have for those who prefer to give personal gifts.......2004-06-13
There is nothing more appreciated than a gift from the heart, and making a keepsake scrapbook for a family member, friend, or really just about anyone who touches your life is a gift that will be treasured.
MAKING GIFT SCRAPBOOKS IN A SNAP is an indispensable book for ideas for small themed scrapbooks and for techniques (which many experienced scrappers will probably already know about) to include on the pages. However, for someone crunched for time, or a simple scrapper like myself, having step-by-step instructions to follow is exactly what is needed.
Some ideas included in the book are: year-in-review, bridal shower/wedding, timeline (i.e. for a pregnancy or baby's first year), family history, calendar of events, memorial, ABC albums, children's storybooks, altered books, and a brag book; but really, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of themes presented.
With 20 projects included and an additional 50 album ideas to inspire you, you will never be at a loss for ideas to show those close to you how much you care.
A basic guide to creating quick little scrapboook albums.......2004-05-29
Three and a half stars for a job adequately done.
The title of this book brought up all sorts of expectations for me: yes, I know, you'd think I'd learn by now, huh? Well, when "gift", "scrapbook" and "In a snap" are in the same sentence, my mind makes connections before I know it. These expectations were:
1. The book would focus on small scale scrapbooks (smaller than 8&1/2 by 11) suitable for gifting
2. I would learn how to plan such an album from start to finish
3. The author would teach ways to organize my time so that I could finish the album quickly
4. The book would thoroughly picture some examples of complete gift scrapbooks and/or layout plans, from the first page to the end.
5. I would be shown both how to complete a variety of ready-made albums and also how to make our own albums from scratch
6. The layouts featured inside would be the same kind of high-quality, cutting-edge styles found in Memory Makers magazine
I'd say most of these expectations were fulfilled. I did learn a lot about how to plan my gift scrapbook before I started, tips on how to unify the look of the album and how to cut down on unnecessary materials so that I could work quickly. There were some cute mini album projects detailed in the last section which are to be made from scratch. There were a lot of ideas for theme albums that I wouldn't have thought of on my own, but which I will use to make great gifts for my family and friends in the years to come. I really wasn't surprised that the looks of the scrapbooks that author Pam Klassen used to illustrate these methods were on the simple side-it makes sense that simpler means faster. Not a collage style clutter in the bunch (which suits my style perfectly).
The two that weren't fulfilled do bother me a bit, though. Numbers 4 and 6 just didn't come through for me. We see a few object lessons illustrated with more than one page from an album, but never the whole thing: I wanted to see how a gift album should flow from start to finish. It's one thing to read about it, quite another to see the pictures. At the very least I thought there should have been some flow charts or diagrams to guide me in the final organization; I wouldn't have to follow them slavishly, but they would have helped me with the "big picture" much more than just text. This is a visual medium, after all.
My opinion about that last one, number 6, is based on having read most of the other books that Memory Makers has ever produced. I am familiar with their publications, which usually have at least a few layouts that "wow" me and many more that make impressions on my own layouts long after I am done reading. Making Gift Scrapbooks in a Snap had some nice but unimpressive layouts compared to those other books. I just didn't come away inspired. As any scrapbooker knows, that's half the reason to buy these books!
So, this is a good solid guide to the basic concept of making quick gift scrapbooks. I suspect that beginning scrapbookers will be the ones to get the most out of this, while the more advanced album crafters will be wanting a little more.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle.

Great gift!.......2006-05-11
I bought a scrapbook for both myself and my friend to fill out. It gives plenty of space for pictures. There are sections to record memories, favorites, and things between the two of you. It was one of the few guided friends scrapbooks I found. Makes a great gift!

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected..........2007-01-09
I am not a plant expert or botanical student, but do have a casual interest in plant identification. I wanted a simple book with lots of pictures / drawings to help identify plants in my yard and surrounding area.
This book is a book, primarily of text, with a few pen drawings which is laid out in a yes-or-no 'decision tree' format. By this I mean that, having a sample plant to identify, one goes to the first set of two statements and decides which of the two statements apply to the specimen (ex: woody parts or no woody parts). Whichever statement is correct leads one to the next set of 2 statements and so on and so on until a specific plant is identified.
I'm sure that for a serious student, this is a good book, but for me it will take some study to become familiar with all the terms used for identification and discrimination.
I am disappointed to find an apparent glaring error on the very first page which results in a logical loop back to the same set of statements (4a and 4b).
Compact but Inadequate.......2001-07-05
The purpose of this book is plant identification in the field. It is not meant for the more difficult taxonomic problems requiring microscopes and herbaria. Therefore my evaluation of the book is based upon the ease of its use in the field. Some features are both positive and negative depending on point of view.
Positive features, which enhance speed of keying in the field:
1. Restricted geographic coverage to Michigan for a Michigan botanist.
2. Compact size in a single volume.
3. Reduced species coverage to the most widespread species, excluding single county records. This is helpful in difficult taxa (grasses), but only if you are certain that the species is common enough to be in the book.
4. Family keys go right to species, eliminating need to re-key the same couplets when genera are complex.
Negative features, which may frustrate some users:
1. No seedless vascular plants such as ferns (but Voss ignores these too), the greatest problem.
2. Keys are in "goto" format. I prefer indented nested keys for quicker runs through. A nested key is easier for me to start and stop anywhere without losing my place than a "goto" key.
3. Families are arranged non-alphabetically (using obsolete Engler& Prantl system) requiring the extra step of referring to the index.
4. No mention of whether species are native or introduced. Although not essential for field identification, it is useful information to have this information when learning new species. In more extreme words: should we admire or curse the plant we see before us?
5. Incomplete coverage of difficult taxa leads to uncertainty of identification. Fewer and faster is a poor replacement for correct names.
6. Species come out directly in family key, requiring a longer time keying in cases in which you are already certain of the genus. Sometimes species within a genus are split up into distant portions of the key.
Michigan's Finest.......2000-06-26
An update, addition, reworking, or what-have-you to Gleason's classic guide. It's basically one giant key to Michigan's plants and follows Voss's (author of the 3 Michigan Floras) key. It's easier to carry around than all 3 of Voss's books. Beware! Knowledge of plants and some intermediate systematics make using this book that much easier.
Comprehensive ........2000-06-21
This work was very comprehensive and offered much information in the way of idenification and classification. It made it easy to identify the flora based on their geographical region.

Absolutely Wonderful Guide to Common Sense Dating.......2006-02-19
This is one of the best and most useful books I have ever read on how to truly, effectively find your mate. Laurie Seale's intelligent, sensible and self-esteem based use of questions to find out over time if you are truly compatible and your prospective partner sees life the way you do, values you, and values what you have to offer is thought-provoking and excellent.
This gave me confidence to believe that I am on the right track. I am not being too picky or delusional - I am right at the heart of what matters. Having to offer what you want in return - knowing the qualities that really matter to you in a possible mate; being aware of your deal-breakers; and not going to bed with someone before you know those answers/have those essential similarities in common, is a good predictor of success and an even better predictor or avoiding heartbreak.
This book ought to be read starting in High School when you are just beginning to date. It would save a lot of future misunderstandings between BOTH sexes.
I have a Master's Degree and at age 47, am far past High School, but I am grateful to have found Ms. Seales' excellent book.
Read it and enjoy !
Jump Into This Book.......2005-12-12
If you are a human being, BUY THIS BOOK. Ms. Seale writes with profound knowledge about a subject we must all master if we are to find the right mate and a fulfilling relationship. The insight Ms. Seale provides is born of experience and thorough research (plus a dash of yoga/Eastern discipline with the help of her friend Susan - see the dedication page). We are led gently through the "10 Questions," learning as we go about ourselves and that is the author's main point: We must know ourselves well, the good and the bad, before we can know others and most definitely before we choose a long-term mate. No matter what your age, whether you are dating, starting what may be a long relationship or wondering how to know for sure when the right person for you comes along, reading this book will guide you and help you.
Amusing, Perceptive and Thought Provoking questions to ask your Prospective Partner.......2005-11-16
I was drawn to this book because of the hundreds, perhaps thousands of great questions to ask my significant other. I stayed to read the perceptive comments by this author in between the questions too. Pop psychology it may be, but all in good fun and with serious enough and well thought out questions to keep any conversation going for hours on end. And I am pretty sure that you will learn a great deal about you and the person you want to go out with, or are going out with. This isn't a "pick up" guide, with lines -- but rather conversation starters that if asked and answered in earnest will reveal enough of one's personality to be thought provoking. You will have to take it from there. Enjoy.
Questions, Questions, and More Questions.......2005-11-16
Obviously, the phrase "jump into bed" can be interpreted literally but also used in reference to a hasty, often ill-advised decision to become involved with someone else. Presumably Seale means both. If I understand her objective (and I may not), she wants to provide advice to both males and females which will help them to determine whether or not to become involved in an intimate relationship which may or may not include sex.
By now, all of us are well aware of various infectious diseases (e.g. AIDS) and the severe psychological problems associated with them. Most of us have a family member or friend (if not several) who has been divorced. At least some of us personally know a battered spouse and realize that her or (yes) his broken bones and physical bruises heal far more quickly than does the emotional damage. All this suggests that there can be -- and often are-- quite serious consequences to a hasty, ill-advised decision to "jump" deeply into a personal relationship of one kind or another.
In this book, Seale offers what she claims to be a philosophy "contrary to the sexual media messages we receive every day, and it is also a way to interact with others that lets you emotionally engage, present your most authentic self, be grounded, centered, loving, and available to what life brings you, knowing when to engage further and then to extract yourself. And from all of these actions you receive freedom. Freedom to move and to live and to feel without feeling hurt, angry, dejected, or sad." This is essentially how Aristotle defines "the good life."
Seale much prefers long sentences which express broad, sweeping generalities. For example, in the Preface she observes that American singles "came of age at a time when premarital sex was expected and endorsed. At a time when society, our peers, and even our parents have come to expect us to be sexually involved if we're dating." Such statements are representative of her thinking and writing style throughout her book. They express Seale's personal opinions. Fair enough. But they certainly do not state facts, much less universal truths. My guess (only a guess) is that she wrote this book on behalf of her own generation, primarily to advise women in the 14-25 age range.
She comes at her reader with a barrage of questions. (The most important of which were first asked several thousand years ago. For example, "Who am I?") Most of the hundreds of questions are sensible enough but -- at least in my mind -- they raise other questions:
1. Given the abundance of research which indicates that most of the impact of face-to-face communication is based on body language and tone of voice with (at most) only 10-15% based on what is actually said, how reliable are the answers to such questions?
2. Also, if someone is inarticulate (i.e. unable to express what is thought and felt), how to evaluate that person's verbal responses?
3. Finally, many people hear only what they hope for or expect, whatever the response's intended meaning may be. How to overcome mental "filters"? Denial, for example, or viewing disagreement as disapproval, if not rejection?
Seale is obviously a very verbal person. She seems certain that obtaining honest answers to the questions she recommends will be beneficial. I agree while having serious doubts (a) that the person asked (i.e. the prospective "partner") is both willing and able to provide such answers, especially to someone only recently met and (b) that when asking such questions of themselves, most people possess sufficient self-knowledge to do so. Long ago I became convinced that behavior is the most reliable indicator of character. If that process of revelation requires an extended period of close observation, so be it.
What to make of this book? Presumably it will be of benefit to many readers who need help with obtaining insights -- about themselves and others -- that will guide and inform decisions about new relationships. To an extraordinary extent, Seale shares thoughts and feelings about herself and her own relationships. This is an intensely personal book. As indicated earlier, however, I have several reservations about many of her assumptions and several of her conclusions. Her support of them is almost entirely anecdotal and most of it based on her own experiences. Also, I do not share her confidence in conversation-as-interrogation unless conducted by highly trained professionals. Hence the importance, to me at least, of carefully observing patterns of human behavior, including one's own.
Seale has shared her own opinions and now I have shared mine. How other readers rate her book is, of course, for them to determine.
I dare you to accept the challenge Ms. Seale puts forth............2005-11-12
Ms. Seale has put before the single population a challenge that must be disquieting to them who says they want a long term relationship. Laurie is saying that if you want a true long-term relationship you can't keep doing the same old things and expect a different result. Also I am say that if you have not had your share of failed relationships you will not attempt Laurie's solution to your failed relationships. If however you have failed enough your pain may be enough that you will risk one more time and risk discovering a full time partner. To really do what Laurie suggests you must have failed enough, you must understand the Spiritual complexities of successful relationships, and be willing to step out in faith in Spiritural awareness, be confident in Laurie's investignation techniques, and complete all the questions in depth before you jump into bed with anyone. Be careful, be open, be emotionally naked with the one who is willing to be naked with you. Good luck --- it is worth it. I can say this after forty-six years of marriage with a lady with whom it has been a joy to have been emotionally naked with for all that time.
