Tribute for Ginny - The Dog Who Rescued 900+ Cats!.......2005-10-25
Ginny's unique talents in locating sick and injured cats had rendered her numerous appearances in CNN, Animal Planet and major news. Her rescue stories were illustrated by two national best selling books: The Dog who Rescues Cats and the Blessing of the Animals. Ginny passed away on August 25th, 2005.
With the passing of Ginny, her unfinished mission of cat rescuing is continued by her caretaker Philip Gonzalez everyday. A non profit organization, The Ginny Fund, has been established to raise fund for cat rescuing in Long Beach New York.

Our Kitty Saint has left us..........2005-08-27
Today's New York Daily News reported on the passing of Ginny, a/k/a the Mother Theresa of Cats, gone at the age of 17. She succumbed to old age yesterday afternoon on a blanket in Philip Gonzalez's care. As for Ginny's story, this is one of my favorite books. The stories are truly heartwarming and this book was a "gotta have it" purchase. Browsing the pet section in a local bookstore, I found this and it jogged my memory: Ginny's story was familiar to me due to a Reader's Digest article, but what happened next? This book captures all the tails...er, TALES, lol. I will definitely re-read this now. How could a dog love cats she doesn't live with? As a cat person, I've always been intrigued by this. How ironic that such incredible humanity could have come from one of god's furry creatures. Rest in peace, Ginny. Let us hope there are more of you in the world.
Absolutely wonderful.......2004-05-06
I read this book in one afternoon and handed it off to my husband, who could not put it down. I relate to the author in one respect: after having animals all my life, I connected with one cat so profoundly that I have devoted my life and work to alleviating animal suffering and overcoming the devastating problem of pet overpopulation. It's bittersweet. I love animals with a depth that is so satisfying, and enjoy human and animal company more than I ever was able. But I am now so attuned to animal suffering (generally due to human neglect or abuse -- I'm not trying to fight the forces of nature) that it is difficult to focus on anything else. Just read this book. It feels so good!
Who Would NOT Like This Book?.......2002-11-18
A continuation of a very sweet story. I have a few stray cats around my home and even though my inside cats aren't as willing to share as Ginny (LOL), I make sure to feed them and give them shelter. I highly recommend this book and also the one that came before it! (Not sure of the exact title).
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2001-01-06
Just as I feel about their first book, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this one too! Let's hope these true stories inspire others so be so kind. Enjoy.

Cats have lived among us as friends for at least 8000 years. At first the relationship was one of mutual service - the cat exchanging rodent control for a warm place to sleep. The interdependence has grown deeper and subtler with the passage of time. In this volume Welleran Poltarnees speaks of the traits he values in cats, among which are: grace, dignity, self-reliance, creative playfulness and mystery. Each of his eloquent statements is accompanied by two pictures. Some of the artists included are: Steinlen, Renoir, Foyita, George Stubbs, Henriette Ronner-Knip, Oliver Herford, A.E. Kennedy, Edwin Noble. and Louis Wain.

Book Description
Should a Jewish boy's dog receive a Catholic blessing?
Jared is looking forward to the Blessing of the Animals on St. Francis's feast day at the church across the street. He plans to go with his friend Ian and take his dog, Shayna, to be blessed. But when he brings the subject up with his mom, she doesn't think its such a good idea. Why? Well, they're Jewish. Jared doesn't see this as a problem, but he agrees with his mom's suggestion to poll four people on the subject, and she'll do the same. Jared approaches his great-grandfather, his father, a Holocaust survivor, and a rabbi, all of whom give diverse opinions on Jared's prospective attendance. Its ultimately up to Jared to decide, and readers, while perhaps differing in their views on his ultimate decision, will cheer Jared for making up his own mind in a thoughtful and deeply personal way. This story for middle-grade readers is enhanced by hand-designed chapter titles and full-page pictures by the author.
Customer Reviews:
great for kids.......2002-05-08
Not only are the illustrations fantastic in this book, but the issues that are dealt with are done in a way that are sensitive to all sides of the dialogue. Religion is a hard thing to question, especially as a child, and Rosen creates a story that sensitively gets right to the heart of a child's concerns about belief. I believe this book encourages kids to contemplate their faith in a very healthy way. I highly recommend it!
Potentially excellent, but with flaws-.......2001-11-29
There were many admirable things about this book - among them, a likeable and believable child protagonist, good depictions of his relationships with the adults in his life, especially his mom and grandfather, and a plot Jewish children who love animals will easily relate to. In spite of these strengths, the book is seriously flawed. At one point, an adult tells the young boy that a Christian custom has nothing to do with Judaism, "just like Hannukah has nothing to do with Christmas and Passover has nothing to do with Easter". When I read this, I excalimed, "That's a lie! Easter has *everything* to do with Passover!" It also disturbed me that, though the boy approaches the priest as one of the adults he wants to poll (see the previous review for this plot point), he never actually *talks* to this man. He's scared of him, and that's presented as being okay. Up to this point, I had thought the book a fine ecuminical story that I wanted to share with the fifth graders when I visited our local school (I am a librarian). I did not. It struck me that interfaith dialogue could not be advanced by presenting an unfair and inaccurate picture of Christianity. And this could have been - and was, in many ways - such a good book! Mr. Rosen should have had a Catholic or Episcopalian friend read his manuscript and correct factual errors.
blessing o f the animals.......2000-12-03
the blessing of the animals is a delightful story about a boy and his dog and his predicament regarding the dog's religious affiliation or lack thereof. Does a child's pet take on the religion of the child and family? Or can the pet share another religious affiliation by virtue of the fact that it is indeed an animal and is viewed "differently"? Or does the pet have a religion at all? These are the questions that the boy in the book needs to answer before making a final decision.

Book Description
This book is filled with uplifting anecdotes, humerous poems, hilarious illustrations, and enlightening facts that remind dog-lovers why canines are an irreplaceable treasure.
Book Description
Dogs are our oldest friends. When a wolf first came to crouch by our fire, cats were wild beasts searching out their own prey, and horses still ran at the first sniff of our approach. Welleran Poltarnees has a lifelong love for dogs, and here in this book he distills his love for them into words. He praises them for their unwavering love, their ready sympathy, their fresh delight in simple pleasures, and their sometimes unconscious humor. He has made each statement more resonant by the addition of pictures, frequently from obscure sources.

A Dog Lovers Special Gift.......2006-05-03
I have ordered this book twice. It has great illustrations and paintings to enjoy. I really enjoyed the way that Welleran Poltarnees writes this blessing with the wonderful pictures on each page. I recently gave this to our veterinarian when she saw us through a most difficult time. We lost our most beloved dog and we felt it would be such a beautiful gift in thanking her. It is a book that every dog lover would love to read and have.
Perfect book for the dog lover.......2003-11-04
I found this book in a gift shop while vacationing last week. It is a lovely collection of pictures and an expression of the unconditional love dogs have for their owners and vice versa. It makes the perfect gift.

Book Description
From the violent world of apartheid South Africa to the supposed immigrant haven of the United States, the people in Saunders's debut story collection brave life's big questions about connection, displacement, death, love, race, and justice. Grappling with feelings too disturbing to articulate, they turn to anthropology or math, music or cosmology, to make sense of the dissonance around them. More often than not, the only truth they find is that life is a complicated dance, and doing the right thing a moment by moment decision.
In "We'll Get to Now Later" Stan, a guilt-stricken white South African immigrant confronts his apartheid past when he meets a Zulu dancer traveling with a circus in the United States; in "Pig Day" Jared, an American teenager, accidentally kills his best friend Nick, the son of a Romanian immigrant, and is co-opted by the bereaved father to build a coffin; and in "A Sudden New City" Heila, a mentally frail and physically faltering white South African grandmother, drives a tractor into a black crowd as revenge for her husband Jacob's infidelity across the color line.
The voices we hear in Saunders's stories are male, female, young, old, American, South African, Romanian. In richly textured prose, they attest to moments as sublime as the music of the spheres or depict images of earth bound brutality bloody as a goat's severed head on a pike. In the tradition of Nadine Goridmer and Norman Rush, but with its own sense of comedy and metaphor, Blessings on the Sheep Dog is a wizardly act of ventriloquism to listen to, relish, remember.

An eye opening read................2005-08-27
I bought this book because I went to high school with the author. I never gave a thought at the time to what it must have been like growing up in So. Africa during apartheid. She was "just a foreign exchange student" who happened to come from that part of the world.
From reading her book I saw a whole new side of her and enjoyed every second of reading the book. I would highly recommend it for anyone - it is a great book regardless of whether you know the author or not!

Product Description
This collection of 48 afghans is created so that the motifs can be joined as they are crocheted. This means that once you have finished crocheting all the motifs or panels, you are really finished! Since the motifs are added one after the other, you won't have a pile of motifs that need tedious sewing together. And afghans made in panels are added as you are crocheting as well. So the good news is, once you are finished crocheting you are really ready to enjoy your afghan.

Beautiful .......2007-08-15
Textures and newer yarns make this a fabulous afghan pattern book. If you are tired of doing row after row of the same stitch this book is for you. Using motifs and stich together techniques and arrangements this is a unique afgahn book. This is my first Bobbie Matela book and I assure you it will not be my last!
Great book with fun patterns.......2007-08-10
This book has some really fun patterns all using the join-as-you-go format. There is a great chapter that incorporates 'fancy' yarn (the fuzzy or furry type), that allow you to use some fun yarn with reuglar yarn. It's a great way to use fun yarn without spending a fortune to make the entire blanket with the expensive yarn. While most of the patterns are rated Intermediate by the writers, I think most would be appropriate for a beginner.
My favorite book.......2006-07-15
I like this book Join as you go Afghans. I like to crochet but do not like joining all the pieces at the end. This is a good book when I am done I am done. I also like this pattern book because the patterns suggest my favorite yarn. Red Heart.
I saw this book at my library. Thank you for having it available.

Ordinary Places, Extraordinary Insight.......2000-08-17
After reading this book, I went out and bought a sketch book. Now, I'm daydreaming about spending the summer in the English countryside, or perhaps in Italy somewhere. Olin inspires the reader to draw. More importantly, he explains how drawing can help us understand places and the forces that shape landscapes. One learns a greater appreciation of ordinary places and the people who create them.
Insightful observations for Perceiving the English landscape.......2000-06-15
Laurie Olin immerses the novice and intellectual landscape observer in the experience of the British countryside. He reveals perceptions through drawings and writings, engaging the reader in historic as well as contemporary investigations. As an architect as well as a renowned landscape architect, Olin adds his unique slant in a beautifully told story. I particularly thought the pensive recanting of the English landscape experience important enough to require it as reading for my college design class who will travel to England next year.
Book Description
Dorothy Gault-McNemee is a medical doctor who had tried every diet she could find to control the weight gains that had plagued her throughout her life. As the founding physician of a busy health clinic, she also saw that overweight patients who were suffering from a variety of diseases were far worse off than those who had their weight under control.
As a result, Dr. Gault-McNemee began to examine what we eat and what our slimmer, healthier ancient forebears ate. They didn't have processed foods and access to sugar; they weren't consuming alcohol and foods that had been mixed with artificial ingredients they couldn't pronounce. They were eating what God put on this earth: meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, grains, and nuts. And thus was
God's Diet born.
In other words, if you can't pick it, pluck it, pull it from the earth, or scale it, don't eat it. If you pick up a can or a package of food that includes even one ingredient that you can't identify, don't eat it. Dr. Gault-McNemee also cautions that far too many foods contain sugar as an additive, from cereal to bread to canned vegetables.
Prepare foods simply and avoid sugar, but while you're at it, have a steak and a baked potato with butter and sour cream.
In
God's Diet, Dr. Gault-McNemee has compiled numerous case studies from her own practice; inspiring advice from people like herself, whose lives have been changed for the better; information on vitamins, minerals, and cholesterol; and menu-planning advice and delicious recipes. The doctor has also prepared three lists of foods: those which you can eat all you reasonably want, those you should avoid, and a "swing list" of foods that you may enjoy occasionally and with limitations.
God's Diet enables you to lose weight simply and naturally without having to remember any complex diet regimen. By incorporating simple habits into our lives -- paying attention to food labels, drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day, and exercising reasonably -- we can easily and radically change the way we live, while becoming healthier and living longer.
Never has there been a simpler or more logically thought out weight-control guide. There is nothing to count or exchange, no special foods to buy.
Everything you need to live a slimmer, healthier life is in your supermarket, if you follow the advice of Dr. Gault-McNemee, whose vast experience with fad diets and overweight patients led her to conceive this brilliant little book.
This truly is the last diet book you'll ever buy.
Remember, if God didn't make it, don't eat it!
Customer Reviews:
the title is all marketing.......2007-04-06
Very little in this book will be new to most health-wise. However, it is good information if you need reasons or inspiration to help get more whole foods in your diet or change your habits.
However... the title is all marketing. Seriously - God's Diet?!? There are two possibilities for this title: grasping for "Maker's Diet" fans, or the publisher is hoping to capitalize on people who prefer to have only God-centered titles on their bookshelves. The book is fine, but be careful trying to make God into the "great weight-loss coach."
The health perspective of this book is written well. Natural foods are better for us, and it is important to be good stewards of the gifts we have (including our health). It's pretty legalistic to look at certain foods and draw the conclusion that they're bad, or not from God. Trying to draw the parallel that eating in certain ways somehow wins His approval is sketchy marketing.
There's also an implied "evil" about some foods. Be cautious about blaming foods or food producers. A decent grasp on the bible reminds believers that evil is in the "hearts" of people (i.e. examine our choices & behaviors), not in the food, people, or even objects we might use.
The book has a rule of thumb "If God didn't make it..." that is catchy, but it does follow some of those old thoughts of "food is the enemy." Be cautious if this is your tendency; habits are harder to change than slogans.
Read the book for the health info, if you must. There are other good books on health, most don't try to invoke God for a sales pitch. Don't get caught up in thinking religiously about your food - that's idolotry.
Good for those in 12-step programs.......2006-02-25
This is a perfect foundation book for those doing 12-step weight loss programs. It doesn't contain a specific food plan, but the good doctor will convince you in a hurry that this is the way we should be eating as a society. It's a short read and gets to the point in a hurry. I would have appreciated more detail in the case studies, but overall I would highly recommend this book.
God's diet: A Short & Simple Way to Eat Naturally, Lose Weight, and Live a Healthier Life.......2005-09-19
The author writes a good, direct book on eating natural foods that are easy to get, prepare and healthy. This diet is easy to follow and makes a lot of sense. I recommend it for anyone who wants a direct, easy guideline for foods that are nutritious, a diet without continually counting calories, probably one that has the simplist guidelines of any that I have encountered, and one that works!
Not About Religion.......2005-03-30
For heaven's sake -- this is a lifestyle regime book -- not a treatise about foods that are approved by the Bible. That said, the author, a medical doctor with a family practice, gives good old-fashioned, albeit limiting, guidelines regarding what to eat and what not to eat. The idea, simply put, is to avoid foods that God did not create, leaving a wide variety of good clean fruits, vegetables and protein sources, but unfortunately, eliminating wine and other man-made substances that use "God-made" substances and through fermentation or other processes create other types of "illegal" foods.
While I commend the author on her suggestions to partake of "real" as opposed to over-processed foods or so-called convenience foods loaded with trans-fats, corn syrup and unnecessary sugars, I think condemning a moderate amount of wine, cheese, bread and yogurt(without preservatives) is excessive. Perhaps her experience as a family physician, however, indicates that these products may cause some problems which are best handled through avoidance. She does exemplify her program with case studies that make for a convincing arguemet.
The format of this very slim volume is simple to follow--the read a breeze and the message clear. Just eat real food that has not been tweaked. You will definitely lose weight and probably feel a lot better feeding your system simple, easy to digest staples although, I would think that eating in such a raw or clean way would make dining in a restaurant a bit difficult.
If you are interested in reading diet books that use the Bible more literally, try "The Maker's Diet" or "What Would Jesus Eat" -- both books along with God's Diet are for folks that are tired of figuring out carbs/protein/fat ratios and just want to eat real food.
It Really Works!!.......2003-10-20
I woke up one day and stepped on the scale and when it showed that I was closely approaching 200 lbs, it scared me to death. I knew I had to do something. I had never started any diets because all of them restricted what I could eat and most were made up of vegetables which I hate. I went online and read into the Atkin's Diet. I took a quiz on their site which told me that I was addicted to Carbs and Sugar and it was affecting my health, my well being and my sanity. I went to the library but I couldn't find the Atkins book. The title, "God's Diet" caught my attention. I decided a little help from up above couldn't hurt and I took it home. When I read it I was happy that it wasn't filled with bible quotes and that it was easy to read. I read more into it and I was surprised at how I was poisoning my body with all the chemicals in processed foods. I said, That's it, I am not eating any of that stuff ever again. That was in April 2003. It is now October and I am still following the diet. Exactly 6 months later and I feel awesome. I have lost almost 50 pounds and 6 pant sizes. No joking! I don't care about how she's not following the bible. I am a Catholic who attends church weekly. God is my friend. He has helped me so much and I know that it was He who put this book in front of me at the library. I don't need anyone to tell me what I should and should not eat. All I needed was a little advice. Everyone in my family has told me how proud they are of me and how there is no way they could give up bread and pasta and soda. I tell them that it is easy when you can have steak and mashed potatoes and eggs. It doesn't feel like you are suffering. I have not been hungry once. I eat brown rice, chicken, potatoes, eggs, bacon, beef, salad, all kinds of fruits, beans and nuts. I can have seafood I just don't like it. I ended up purchasing the book because of all the people who kept asking me to borrow it. I feel like a walking advertisement. I am still not at my ideal weight but I know that I can be there and soon. All I need to do is continue the diet and exercise and drink lots of water. I feel that this is something that I can continue for the rest of my life. I used to be addicted to things like Oreos and Ice Cream and Chocolate. Now I am addicted to sunflower seeds, and peanuts and grapes. Those are my munchies now. There is no portion control with this diet. As long as you follow the principle, "If God Didn't make it, then don't eat it!" you will be fine. This book is a little pricey for its size but I highly recommend it. If you don't want to purchase it then look for it in the library. It is so easy that all you need to do is read through it once and you won't have to read it again. One thing that helped a lot was some advice that was in the book, if someone offers you a food that you know you can't have, don't say, " I can't eat that." instead say "I don't eat that anymore." There is a big difference. I have to admit that it was hard at first especially since I live with 6 other people and none of them are following it with me. If you just believe in yourself you can do this too. Another thing, I lost 50 pounds without exercise! Yes you read that right, NO EXERCISE!! Even though the author does recommend exercise, I just never got around to it and I still lost weight. I just recently started doing sit ups and crunches so that I can get rid of my sagging belly. So I am just going to try and tone up but the diet gets rid of everything else. I look at my before and after pictures and I am amazed that that person was me.
