Like her late compatriot Jacques Cousteau, French marine biologist Anne Collet has traveled the world in search of exotic denizens of the deep. Unlike the apparently imperturbable Cousteau, Collet has no difficulty admitting that her encounters with some of these creatures have terrified her. "Make no sudden movements, and stick together," she instructs her companions while swimming after a female right whale. "She must not think she is surrounded. Animals detest that. As long as she feels safe, we have nothing to fear." Adds Collet, wryly, "I don't know if I managed to persuade them; it was hard enough to convince myself."

In this memoir, a scuba-mask view of the world below the waves, Collet recounts her adventures in studying whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals under a variety of conditions, some of them full of peril. That peril, however, concerns all: most of the species she has studied, she warns, are in grave danger, not least because of the all-but-unimpeded use of pelagic trawl nets by commercial deep-sea fishing fleets, which kill five to ten thousand dolphins a year in the Bay of Biscay alone. With their steady disappearance, marine ecosystems begin to unravel, and Collet warns urgently that action must be taken now if the sea--and, by extension, the planet--is to be brought back to health, its terrifying residents included. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Anne Collet has ridden the tail of a white whale - for ten seconds off the coast of Argentina. She has taken children diving in the Azores to see dolphins and led teenagers on ocean voyages. And she has heard the song of beluga whales in the Arctic Ocean. In Swimming with Giants, Collet describes the power and majesty of being close to some of nature's most magnificent creatures. Combining science with a sense of adventure, she conveys the sheer excitement of her work with marine mammals, from the sublime gaze of a whale's eye to the race to save animals harmed by pelagic drift nets or toxic spills. A contemporary ecohero in the tradition of Jacques Cousteau, Collet is an inspiration not only for the many who have accompanied her on her research trips, but also for those who will see in her journey a call to follow their own dreams.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to learn about whales, dolphins and seals.......2001-05-26

This book is captivating and fun to read. The stories are exciting and educational. I have a new respect for the creatures of the sea. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is amazed by the creatures of the sea and wants to learn more. Anne Collet is a very inspirational person. She has a great desire to futher the world's knowledge of the species and inspire others to follow their heart and pursue dreams of research or scientific study.

"Let me tell you about something magical that happens from time to time on our island. Early in the morning, just after the sun rises, my mother and I go down to the beach and wait. We watch the ocean...and if we are lucky, we see dolphins." A young girl and her mother's day at the shore leads to an underwater adventure as they put on their snorkels and flippers to swim with a friendly pod of dolphins. Gliding and diving, spinning and leaping, the girl frolics with her dolphin friend and experiences the wonder and beauty of the underwater world. Factual backmatter included on last page.

      Description

An interweaving of events threaded around the common theme of vulnerability to manic depression.

      About the Author

Catriona Travers was born and grew up in Dublin, Ireland. She went to school and college there, but unfortunately had to drop out of University due to her first episode of manic depression - for which she was hospitalised. She came to London in 1988, where she took a succession of temping jobs leading to switchboard operator jobs in hotels and hospitals. Her last job was as a supervisor and switchboard operator in a North London hospital. Catriona has always enjoyed writing; poetry in the eighties and a children's book in the nineties. Catriona also enjoys reading, tennis, writing and drama

      Book Extract

"So I'm afraid the doctor thinks you're a manic depressive." I looked at the junior doctor bewildered. The Americans call it bi-polar disorder. 'Hmm' I replied why couldn't the consultant tell me that himself? The trainee registrar had just come running out of the presence of the great God himself, all flustered. She then proceeded to explain to me that the treatment of manic depression was Lithium Salts. Yes, a dose of the salts was all I needed.

This was all rather perplexing as I had barely seen the great man himself, perhaps once. I had been three weeks waiting to be seen and by the time I got around to seeing him I was rather perturbed, to say the least and oh, horror of all horrors I told him in no uncertain terms to "Fuck off!" .I ranted at him for a bit. "Don't forget I've been waiting in this hospital for weeks, with not a word or even a sedative to help me sleep and I never saw you once." He smiled a superior smile, like those in positions of power are wont to do, and disappeared into a rather anonymous looking room to lord it over his minions.

When said junior doctor appeared bearing the good news she looked rather apologetic. "I'm afraid Dr Constable thinks you are exhibiting signs of hypo -manic behaviour, blah, blah, blah. So we'll try you out on an experimental dose of Lithium." So that was my first diagnosed day of being a manic depressive. Some life sentence that, don't you think? Friern bloody Barnet, a bowel of a hospital in the sanity of the metropolis of London. So what did that entail, - years of going in and out of some anonymous hospital with draughty corridors, cell -like beds (we are talking NHS here) stodgy food, and indifferent nursing staff. Here we digress temporarily as I began my experience in a Dublin hospital, being from Dublin's fair city as I was. St John of God's Hospital, in Stillorgan, in Dublin, to be exact.

And it all began with one terrible all-time low, an abysmal deep depression, a depression from the pits of hell. God, there was no depression worse than it.

I had just completed a year in college and was looking forward to a working holiday in Nice in the South of France with my two sisters. To tide me over till I got to France I got a job in James's Street Hospital, a nice little earner for a summer job, as hospital jobs tended to be at the time. Everything was well with the world at the time. Blue skies plenty of money at the end of each week, and a happy head and a happy heart. I'd walk up Thomas Street every morning with a spring in my step, up past the James's Street Guinness brewery. The pungent odour of the brewing process used to hit your nostrils as soon as you turned off Christ Church Cathedral into Thomas Street. It would put you off drinking the black stuff for life.

As a kookaburra looks on, a little girl and her mother sit on an Australian beach waiting for a pod of dolphins to appear. Finally, the animals arrive, and mother and daughter put on their snorkels and flippers and join them in the water. Simple prose accompanies bright, full-page acrylic paintings. The dolphins and the ocean setting are lovingly and beautifully depicted, showing an idyllic world where animals and humans communicate without words. An author's note provides a full page of facts about these mammals. In addition to relating an experience that may not be familiar to many children, this peaceful picture book could accompany lessons on marine life or social studies.

                    5 out of 5 stars Healing a Broken Spirit.......2001-01-01

My mother died unexpectedly in August 1995. She fell alseep and never woke up. For weeks after her death I could find no solace. My beloved garden lost all meaning to me. Several months later, in early November, I was browsing through the garden section of a bookstore I visited once or twice a year. A small hardcover book, wedged between large volumes of gardening advice and gorgeous picture books, caught my eye, and I took it down from the shelf. Its title, Journeying In Place: Reflections from a Country Garden, seemed rather long for a book of less than one hundred pages. I opened it and began reading. It is All Saints'Day, a year after the author, Gunilla Norris, found her mother dead. Sadness gripped me as I read the words that I could not utter, the words that would help me begin my journey back from grief: "The killing frost has happened both in my garden and in my life. I have lost my mother."

Gardeners understand and accept life's cycles better than most, I believe--the seasons, birth, death. Norris's "little" book focuses on her garden and the life in and around it through one year. In it she describes the spiritual, the "saints," that inhabit her two-acre plot of Connecticut farmland. From spring peepers to a feral cat, from dahlias to day lilies, from compost to harvest, she guides the reader through four seasons, discovering the "holy" in the everyday, and in doing so, finds meaning and peace. As the geese once again fly south, heralding the coming winter, Norris is uplifted. "I think of my mother and somehow I feel her presence inside me...No love is ever lost in this universe. No matter what season, what year, what place, love will always be turned into new soil."

This book found me during my darkest season, and Norris's words helped heal my broken spirit.

                    Book Description

A hands-on gardener, Henry Homeyer gives practical advice on how to garden, whether building a hot box, transplanting peonies, defeating the deer, growing ladyslipper orchids and shiitake mushrooms, or keeping the birds out of the berry bushes. Each month covers a range of topics relevant to the season: starting seedlings, edging and mulching, gardening with children, getting rid of invasive plants, pruning , planting shrubs for attracting and feeding birds, putting the garden to bed, growing houseplants, . . . These are just a few of Homeyer's 69 short "reflections and observations" on matters of interest to amateur, dedicated, and armchair gardeners alike.

Homeyer grew up in the 1950s learning about organic gardening from a grandfather who used manure tea and compost, not 10-10-10, herbicides, and DDT. For him, organic gardening is not a political position, but a common sense approach to having the best soil and the healthiest plants.

Of special relevance to denizens of zones 3-5, the climatic belt which includes New England and runs across southern Canada and west to the Rockies, each of the twelve chapters (one for each month) contains several pieces combining technical information, practical tips, personal reflections, and more than a little humor.

An unusual feature is Homeyer's interviews with other gardeners. Meet Joe Mooney, the aging wizard of turf at Fenway Park. Spend an afternoon in the garden with Jamaica Kincaid. Visit Jean and Wes Cate, growers of heirloom vegetables at Fox Run Farm. Learn more about the White House gardens from chief horticulturist Dale Haney. Or marvel at Marguerite Tewksbury, an 85-year-old organic gardener who single-handedly runs a farm stand, drives her 1950 Ford Ferguson tractor, and weeds her 6,000-square-foot vegetable patch with a full-sized rototiller. "She doesn't say that keeping active and eating organically keeps her healthy and vigorous, but I have a feeling that it does," writes Homeyer.

4 out of 5 stars Regional notes for a national audience.......2003-03-24

It is a tricky thing to adapt columns written with a particular region in mind into a book with a national audience -- a special trick, perhaps, when a kind of gardening calendar is retained to organize the text. Henry Homeyer's practical "reflections and observations" may seem most germane to gardeners in New England, but if you know enough to place his experience in your own climate, you will find plenty to interest you.

What I like best about this book are the pieces that transcend zones entirely, such as a report of his visit to White House gardens and his interview with Jamaica Kincaid. Discreet illustrations (block prints, a few black and white photos, and a few drawings) add to the text. And there is an excellent index, something which alas can no longer be taken for granted in gardening books.

Despite my misgivings about how serviceable some of these essays are beyond New England, Henry Homeyer's plain and personal prose reminded me of the great American garden writer, Henry Mitchell. I think Mitchell would not be unhappy to find this book on a shelf alongside his own.

Much has been written about sexuality as well as theories have been formed about it. Most people seem to be curious about sexuality and want to explore the mysteries that are attached. However, not much has been revealed about the "why" certain behaviors occur until Dr. Aline Zoldbrod published her book "Sex Smart: How Your Childhood Shaped Your Sexual Life and What to do About it."

Zoldbrod explores the multidimensional nature of human sexuality by presenting information through a cognitive base as well as emphasizing skills in communication and self-awareness. She covers sexuality from biological, moral, psychological, and social perspectives with research, client experiences, and theory.

According to Zoldbrod, what is considered as "normal" sexual behavior is typically based on observations made of family and society. She explains that how we are treated or what parameters are set upon us during our childhood reflects on sexual development. Touch, trust, feeling good about the body as well as oneself are just of the few dynamics that shape the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

"Sex Smart" gives the reader the opportunity to analyze, reflect, and come to terms with their own sexuality and behaviors through explanation and reading vignettes about experiences of others. After each chapter the reader can do exercises and self-assessments to become aware of their own issues and development. "Sex Smart" also gives the opportunity to examine the factors and decisions one has made in the past, and find ways to explore and replace them with new healthy patterns by re-writing the scripts brought down through the generations.

Although I highly recommend this book for every reader, it is necessary to note the importance of having a therapist at hand to discuss issues as they come during the reading and exercises of "Sex Smart." This is not a book to skim through in a day, nor is it a book to take lightly. It is a book that evokes much inner thought and exploration of behaviors and attitudes that have been framed within the identity of the reader.

For 15 years, I asked health care professionals, Why have I lost my interst in sex? Why do I love my husband as much as I do and yet increasingly fear intimacy with him? What's WRONG with ME?!! Until I read this book no one could give me the answers to questions I had given up asking. Dr. Zolbrod's one-on-one writing style and brief case studies helped me to see how much my parents attitude about their and my sexuality influenced me more the older I got and the longer I was married. The information within this book brought a level of understanding and new lines of communication my husband and I never had before. I have never been so grateful to find and read a book, and yes--this book changed my life.

Wow! was my first reaction when reading Aline Zoldbrod's SexSmart. I am a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist always in search of good reading material for my clients. SexSmart is tops on my list. On rare occasions I find a book that speaks the truth, dramatically enhancing a reader's understanding of self. If you buy this book, you are about to have this experience.

SexSmart isn't just another book on sexuality. SexSmart actually guides people through a personal understanding of who they are sexually - what a gift to readers wanting more for themselves and their sexuality. Readers can use this intensive exploration of how parental and social influences impact sexual expression to increase their current level of sexual satisfaction. It is in fact a book best read several times, as it is so full of great information. This is one of only a few books I keep available to my clients in the waiting room. I applaud Dr. Zoldbrod for a job well done!

For the vast majority of the young--from six months to eighteen years--sexuality is like a huge, unexplored continent. Each of us KNOWS that this mysterious, exciting, scary world is ours,
belongs to us. We know this from earliest times, when our own bodies--that do not lie--tell us, through powerful feelings and reactions, that there is a wonderfully rewarding world that is part of us. Inexplicably, our parents and important others, with their silence and shrouded denial, discourage us from exploration. The existence of sexuality is not exactly denied, it is treated as unlawful and we are reluctantly presented with the tip of the iceberg.

The result of this almost universal attitude is that even many
grown-ups remain uninformed about one of the most influential forces in our lives.

Dr. Aline P. Zoldbrod, an informed researcher and therapist in the world of sexuality, has written a marvelous guide to this unexplored world. She describes and explains all the various facts and practices of sexuality and turns this formerly dark continent into a healthy, known, and useful areas of life.

Dr. Zoldbrod explores nearly every aspect of sexuality and furnishes questionnaires to help the reader get personally specific about his or her own experiences, to clarify and help understand and deal with them.

She explores the spectrum of influences on sexual development from early, loving parenting to neglectful, abusive, and violent behavior. These descriptions are again equipped with detailed questions so the reader can relate to her and his own experience and make use of the suggestions about how to handle the associated feelings.

A few chapter headings suggest the inclusiveness of the book: The Touch of Love, The Foundation of Trust, Feeling Good About Your Body, What You Learned About Gender, Feeling Good About Yourself, The Dynamics of Power, Becoming a Social Person, Masturbation and Fantasy, The Changes of Adolescence, The Effects of Physical Violence on Sexuality.

This is a book you will read, and as you do, you will say to yourself, " I wish my parents had read this when I was young!"

As a couples and sex therapist who sees, every day, the consequences of sexual ignorance, I highly recommend this book.
