Our Pho-paw.......2007-06-04
OK we goofed when we adopted two found puppies that turned out to be brother and sister. Training built on understanding canines and respect and love of the animal is Kyle Warrens business. His book is the next best thing to having him on site. The book is clearly written. The information and instructions go step by step and make sense. Understanding how important the "sit-stay" is in MY life as well as my dogs make everything I do with two big dogs so much safer and easier. The book is a great instructional tool and I hope he writes a second.
Two Paws Up for "Stay Come Heel, Every Time !!!.......2006-09-29
This educational, informative book on Canine training should be required reading for all puppy owners! Kyle Warren trained our Yorkshire Terrier (Spike) and he was a Terror of a dog (age 5). Following the methods outlined in the book and his professional expertese he had our highly aggressive dog behaving after one session. This book is a great educational tool for all dog owners !!!!
Love this book!!.......2006-09-28
I read this book after having worked personally with Kyle. His methods and passion for his work have been captured in text. If you are not lucky enough to have Kyle work with you and your dog, then this book is the next best thing!! You will have a new found respect for the relationship between you and your dog after reading this informative book.
Dog Whisperer.......2006-09-28
Kyle Warren treats dogs with great respect, but does not anthropomorphize them. When he is with one or more dogs, he is quickly and totally in charge. Rory Rowling suggests that Kyle is for 'stringing up your dog by his collar and choking him'. His suggestion that Kyle is angry with anyone who is nice to his dog is absurd. Rowling has it wrong. Kyle doesn't choke, nor does he bribe. He gets inside the dog's head and good things happen.
A Man's Love For His Students.......2006-09-27
A personal attack on someones character for their own lack of sales is not needed here. I own and have read Stay Come Heel. Everytime and use it as program notes for the training that Kyle does with my dogs. For someone to attack him when they have not seen his training methods in action or trained with him is rediculous.Kyle is a very warm hearted person who cares for the dogs that he has trained, just because he is not filling them up with unneeded calories or spoiling them does not mean that he abuses the dogs. I have numerous friends who have tried other methods of training to no avail, including my sister who came over to Kyle's teachings after her dog would not listen at all if there was no treat available. I have 2 Redbone Coonhounds who Kyle has worked intensively with and he was able to get it where we can allow both of them off of the leash when breeders and other trainers said it could not be done! So I stick by Kyle and his methods (Love, Trust, Respect) and I think anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Kyle would too. His book is perfect for anyone who does not have his services locally or for guidelines to training, it is a very easy to read book and easy to follow.
What happened Rory did Kyle put you on the WAIT List.

Not instructional.......2006-07-03
This is a great book to see what someone else has done using trompe l'oeil, however it is not instructional.
Oh The Possibilities.......2006-01-13
The murals in this book are beautiful, fantastical, grand and WAY above my abilities. :-) I enjoyed this book because of the possibilities and the ideas it fostered versus my ability (or inability) to mimic the designs. I've been looking for a book that addresses how to incorporate doors into murals and this is the first one that I've come across that showed some ideas.
Obviously, this author and muralist is a VERY experienced painter (note his mural interpretation of the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe nursery rhyme - pg 82). Many of the murals depicted would be something expected in a museum, hotel or grandiose mansion. In fact, if you look in the back of the book you will notice that many of them are from private collections and the Marquess and Marchioness of Hertford.
The Painted House does not contain much info on techniques or step-by-step instructions. It is more of an idea book to open your mind to possibilities. I do think some of the less complex designs could be adapted to smaller spaces with some creative thinking.
If you want inspiring mural designs to paint, this book is probably only for the very experienced or talented artist. If you are a creative beginner, it's a good resource for ideas to stimulate projects on your own artistic level.
Not useful.......2005-10-01
Although the work depicted in the photos is incredible, none of it is very useful. Nice to look at - not at all practical for everyday painters.
good reference, not for beginners.......2005-07-20
I am a decorative artist, and I found this book to be really helpful when looking for inspiration,or looking up some new themes, fresh ideas. If You are a beginner looking for a step by step guide, don't bother,it won't help. However, it WILL make You want to paint, because it is just so beautiful, it makes You want to grab Your brush and paint all over the place. I also found this useful to show it to clients who want a mural, but are not sure about a theme.
Gorgeous works, terrific for inspiration.......2003-01-13
This book is full of beautiful paintings and ideas. The author gives you layout examples so you could literally paint your whole house, or at the very least all 4 walls of a room. Some of the examples are things like: being in an Arabian tent with one flap rolled back to reveal a beautiful desertscape; an indoor swimming pool circled with mythological creatures; draped fabric on all the walls, etc. There are many more, and they're simply breathtaking. The author has painted murals inside museums in Europe, so you know the quality is there. There are oodles of color photos here, and while this isn't a full blown step-by-step book, with 1,2,3 pictures, it gets 4 stars because of it's incredible diversity of mural use, from small to large, and the inspiration that comes from it. I wish it were a little less costly, but it is a nice book with quality paper stock and binding. I know I will refer to it when I start my mural project. If it had more of a beginner's feel, I'd have given it 5 stars.

Book Description
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is the story of a sixteen-year-old who retreats from reality into the bondage of a lushly imagined but threatening kingdom, and her slow and painful journey back to sanity.
Customer Reviews:
Regardless of her actual diagnosis, a great read.......2007-08-01
INPYARG is a well-written book from the perspective of a highly intelligent adolescent girl. Recent mental health professionals that have analyzed the work do not see her symptomology as schizophrenic/psychotic, but as severe depression, loneliness, and possibly autism, a combination of which led to her "creative" inner detached world.
Regardless of what her diagnosis may be today, Green does a wonderful job of capturing the mindset of someone with severe mental illness who is crying for help and simultaneously fears the change that is associated with mental health. A must read for anyone in the field, and highly recommended to anyone else looking for a good read.
Vivid Unreality.......2007-06-14
Deborah is sixteen years old and for years has known that something is not right with her. She always feels isolated from others, unable to make friends and to make good connections with the world. Her parents like to pretend that everything is fine, though, and nothing is wrong with her at all. They have a status to keep up, and having something wrong with their daughter would reflect badly on them. But finally Deborah is so sure something is wrong, she has to do something about it. She makes a feeble attempt to kil herself by giving herself small cuts on her wrist. The result of this cry for help is a stay in a mental hospital, where she is finally able to meet with a doctor who will help her to figure out what is wrong and how she can go about fixing it.
This story follows Deborah's thoughts as well as the thoughts of her doctor, an older woman who has never seen a patient as young as Deborah but who thinks she will be able to help. Through their therapy sessions, the doctor learns that Deborah has been living her entire existence in a fantasy world that exists in her own mind, with its own language, gods, rules, and logic. The doctor's challenge then becomes to teach Deborah about the real world around her, so she will be able to decide whether she wants to continue to live in this fantasy of her own creation or to live in the real world with other people.
It was fascinating to read about a fantasy world that was so vivid, it could overshadow reality. I felt like I gained a better understanding of how terrifying and disorienting a disease like schizophrenia would be. Although I don't know how realistic the treatment aspect of this book was, I liked the mental illness descriptions.
eye-roller.......2006-12-13
I've been trying to finish this book for about 2 years now and everytime I pick it up I roll my eyes at each instance of her slipping into her fantasy world.
The book's language is way too advanced to describe a young teen and seems more like it was written by the psychiatrist instead of 3rd person narration. Every time the fantasy world is described I keep imagining the author sitting at her typewriter trying to invent nonsense words.
Everytime I try to keep reading I want to throw it into traffic.
A look into the life of a girl suffering from schizoprenia.........2006-12-06
I thought this was a good book. For me personally, it wasn't the type of book I would always choose, and I couldn't really get into it. It took me awhile to finally get intreseted in the book, so it was easy for me to forget about it and set it asid.I Never Promised You a Rose Garden was an extremely well written book. It goes into great detail about a teenager suffering from schizophrenia. In my opinion though, it was a bit slow moving, and it could be confusing at times. When I first began reading the book I was confused because it didn't state that she had schizophrenia right away. Therefore, when it went from the real world to Deborah's world I got confused at times, until I finally found out exactly what the problem was with her, 18 pages into the book.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden tells the story about a 16-year old girl, Deborah Blau suffering from schizophrenia. She is brought to a mental hospital, without her consent, in an attempt to make her situation better. Her mother and father keep her condition quiet, and they don't even tell their youngest daughter, Suzy, the real reason why her sister was taken away, and why she will be gone for such a long period of time. This books tells you about Deborah's journey from a world of her own, back to the real world, hopefully to her own light at the end of the tunnel.
I recommend this book to teenagers, around the ages of 14 and up. I would also say that you should be able to comprehend things easily because towards the beginning of the book the lack of detail of what was going on, and exactly what was wrong with Deborah made it hard to understand.
Not Your Typical Beach Read.......2006-08-25
Living in two separate worlds is an idea that seems to only be portrayed in science fiction or fantasy novels. However, for Deborah Blau, this concept is part of her reality. I Never Promised You a Rose Garden reveals the story of Deborah, an adolescent diagnosed with schizophrenia who comes from a background of mixed feelings within her immediate family, an overpowering grandfather that holds expectations for her that seem almost out of reach, and anti-Semitic discrimination from her peers. Instead of a lengthy exposition, the plot begins with Deborah's parents finally making the decision to remove her from high school and send her to a mental institution for intense psychological treatment.
The reader learns about Deborah's dark history and the deep processes of her mind through her thoughts and consultations with her therapist, Dr. Fried. Since setting is primarily in the different wards of the mental facility, leaving little room for any major plot development outside of Deborah's successes and failures while receiving treatment, the character development is paramount in this novel. The author, Joanne Greenberg, does a superb job of depicting dysfunctional characters that not only serve the purpose of comic relief because of their erratic behavior, but also reveal deeper, more melancholic aspects of the life of a mentally ill individual.
Greenberg juxtaposes the horror of mental illness with the relative safety it provides for the affected from facing the challenges of the real world. This is the core of Deborah's conflict within her mind. She must decide between her imaginary place, Yr, that offers safety yet keeps her locked away from the world, or she must face her fears and experience life with both its challenges and opportunities. The friendships that she makes in the institution highlight the novel's stress on the importance of building relationships for personal growth and allow her to accept the fact that most people have problems and possess the ability to work through them.
Dr. Fried is the epitome of a knowledgeable, patient, and committed therapist that is dedicated to helping Deborah release herself from the depths of Yr and to bringing her back to a relatively normal life. Though the novel is focused on Deborah's life in the mental facility, there are several parts that allow the reader to experience, through heartfelt descriptions, the effect that her institutionalization has on her family. Her parents learn to accept and ward off judgments from others that stem from Deborah's "label" of being mentally unstable. Despite their problems, the Blau family members are readily supportive of Deborah and hope for a successful recovery.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is an absolutely fascinating book because it provides clear insight into the complicated lives of the mentally ill and stresses that people should neither fear nor revere these individuals due to their altered state of consciousness. Rather, society should endeavor to view them and their issues in an unbiased manner, for there is not a person living without some type of challenge that he or she must face.

Book Description
Eve’s Rib is the revolutionary new book that exposes how the medical industry, as a whole, has ignored the issue of gender in almost every aspect of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. From the very infancy of medicine, the focus of study has been on men; it was assumed that women were simply a smaller version of men. Because of a groundswell of interest by women in issues of their own health, the differences between men and women are now becoming the focus of research attention—providing some of the most important changes in medicine since the discovery of antibiotics. Eve’s Rib is a powerful tool for women eager to understand the different ways in which their bodies work and how to use this information to provide essential care for themselves and their loved ones—men and boys included.
Dr. Marianne Legato, one of the most respected scientists working in the field of gender-specific medicine, blows the lid off the medical industry’s long-standing comfort with the notion that what we know about the male body can be applied to women without modification. She shares with women, for the first time, the truth about how they differ fundamentally from men in virtually every system of the body. From the composition of their saliva to the way their guts, brains, and hearts function, Dr. Legato takes us step by step through the differences between male and female form and function and ultimately presents us with a groundbreaking proposal for how gender-specific treatments will radically improve the quality of life for both sexes.
Women have long been viewed as carbon copies of men. In fact, until the 1990s, most medical investigations of diseases that affect both women and men were done exclusively on men, under the assumption that humans were physiologically the same. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here are some eye-opening examples of how men and women are different:
* The male brain is larger and has more brain cells. The female brain, on the other hand, has more intricate and complex intercellular connections from one side to the other. This may explain women’s quicker recovery of speech after stroke.
* Women’s hearts beat faster than those of men, even during sleep, and take longer to relax between beats.
* Women’s lung cancers tend to be located in the periphery of the lung, causing their symptoms to be late-appearing compared to those of men, whose cancers are more centrally located.
* Smoking damages a specific gene in females, which causes a fourfold increase in the likelihood that a woman who smokes will die of cancer.
* The bones at the base of women’s thumbs have unequally sized faces, and wear and tear is greater in this joint than in men’s, who have a better articulation between their same-sized bones.
* Bile has a different composition in men and women. Women are more likely to have gallstones as a result.
* Women’s stomachs empty more slowly than men’s, so food takes longer to move through their digestive tracts. This may influence the way women absorb medicines taken orally.
* After weight loss, women have lower levels of the hormone leptin, which triggers feelings of satiety. This may be why women are more likely to regain lost weight after dieting.
Customer Reviews:
A book for so many.......2002-07-08
Dr. Legato, the most respected voice in the nascent discipline of gender-specific medicine has written a book that can enlighten so many people. Unlike many books on "women's health" this book has the beauty of being inclusionary. The book is not only relevant to women, but is a helpful read for any husband, son, brother, or health care professional. I do not think that we have really understood what short shrift women have been given in formulating the treatment protocols for medical conditions. Hopefully this book and the science it heralds will help push the medical establishment to realizing that women are not just small men with different reproductive organs but are people with unique responses to drugs, and symptomologies that are necessary knowledge to have before anyone can make an accurate diagnosis. This book should be standard reading for every medical student.
A groundbreaking book.......2002-06-12
Eve's Rib by Marianne Legato, MD is a groundbreaking book. In clear, easily understood language Dr. Legato spells out the myriad ways that gender influences our experience of illness, our response to medications and the expectations/biases of our physicians. She points out that when scientists performed research only on male subjects, and extrapolated their findings to women "they made a tremendous intellectual gaffe." Because women are not just diminutive versions of men. As Dr. Legato makes clear, their bodies and their response to disease are often very different from that of men - and not just in their reproductive organs. The field of gender-based medicine is still in its infancy but already some of the new knowledge that has been discovered is saving lives and improving the health care of both men and women. Just to cite one example, Dr. Legato relates how drug companies are now trying to design medicines to combat abnormal heart rhythms that can actually be caused by drugs that are effective in men, but dangerous for women. She details how every organ system in the body has features that are gender-dependent. And she points up how much knowledge is still to be gained. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in human biology and in staying healthy.
