Have they been there?.......2006-07-15
I spent any vacation time I had with my black lab, and therefore own almost 20 pet travel directories acquired over a period of 15 years. Each is unique in it's own way, and I believe the Pets Welcome - NE and NY edition to be one of the first directories that focused on two things that made the book stand apart from others. First, it was a regional book, and second, the listings were more upscale than the usual chain hotel listings. However, the batting average for the locales was about .30 at best. The directions were terrible in all cases, and the management of the b&b's were really quite indifferent. But what really was amazing is that I drove around for two hours trying to locate one b&b in particular, called them for more directions so they knew I was on my way, arrived after driving for more than ten hours and was told the kitchen was closed because it was a slow night! They didn't even offer anything to eat and advised me that I would have to wait until morning. The next b&b was only slightly better. Both locations did not have any dog friendly walking areas contiguous to the property. So I go back to - Have they (the authors) been there?
Very informative.......2000-08-25
A great book for the dog or cat lover who would like to take their pet on vacation with them. It gives tips on car & plane trips. With over 200 pages of hotels, and inns, phone #'s,e-mails,prices. There are very informative descriptions of the accommodations as well as the surrounding areas. 4 paws!
Not much meat to the matter!.......2000-04-15
This book has very little substance behind the nice cover! I found it not particularly helpful or useful in any way, except as a extremely basic list of hotels/inns etc. that may accept pets... the book includes extremely generic information like you might find on a hotel flyer or brochure. There is no specific information about the inn/hotel's environment for pets and why in the world you would want to take your pet there in the first place! There are some lists of various parks, but no descriptions or reviews. It almost feels as if the author looked on a map for green areas and then listed a few of them in the book to make it longer... A similar and much better book is "On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend-New England" by Dawn and Robert Habgoo. (Now that's a book worth every penny and more!)
Book Description
This glorious book reveals the exquisite simplicity of decorating and designing with mosaics. As it delves into the history of the art, it draws on sources from Ancient Greece and Rome, the Renaissance, Pre-Columbian Mexico, the Victorian age, the Art Nouveau movement, through to the latest contemporary work. Enhanced with hundreds of color photos, Classic Mosaic explores the application of mosaics using classical influences. The versatility and decorative potential of mosaics is then interpreted in a dazzling array of historically-inspired projects. In chapters on materials, equipment, and techniques, Classic Mosaic explains how the process of application is an integral part of the design, whether using ceramic, Venetian glass smalti, gold, marble, stones, shells, or mirror. Elaine Goodwin, a respected mosaic artist, clearly demonstrates how a design is developed, from the initial idea to the finished piece. From intricate Grecian floor patterns to a shimmering Klimt chair mosaic, Classic Mosaic shows how to create splendid designs inspired by 6,000 years of mosaic art.

Almost great but flawed.......2007-08-28
This is a book in search of an audience. It starts with some interesting text regarding the history of mosaics as well as introducing the fundamentals of creating them yourself. It then presents a series of projects completed by the author. The projects are mostly top notch and provide a window into the techniques used by this talented artist.
But that is as far as it goes. In the interest of protecting her art the author goes to great lengths to make certain that her projects are difficult to replicate. No where in this book will you find any patterns of original or classical motifs. Pictures containing these elements are intentionally distorted in order to make them impossible to replicate. In some cases (including the cover piece!) pictures of the completed artwork are actually omitted (presumably because they would be easy to copy).
I actually agree with the idea that budding mosaicists should work from their own original ideas and this book is certainly recommended with those constraints in mind, but it could have been alot more. Even some simple classical designs for reproduction would have made this work much much better. Instead the desire of the artist to preserve her "eliteness" gets in the way.
A Grand Mosaic Book.......2006-06-08
I bought this book for the historical effects. After reading during the past week, it has turned out to be one of the best mosaic books I own. The photography is breathtaking. Since buying a stack of mosaic books at an estate sale, I have always been a huge Emma Biggs follower. However, this author is amazing and shows how to use fragments of the materials to create fabulous pieces of art. I'm an instant fan and re-energized.
In my opinion, this is not a book for a beginner. I believe it is short on the necessary basics. But it is strong in displaying many step-by-step photographs to make the 16 projects from start to finish understandable for the experienced. A beginner artist should store the book away for immediate inspiration when the time is right.
Peace.
Five stars for illustrations and projects; not "how-to" book.......2005-05-27
The photos are breathtaking, full of inspiration for anyone interested in any kind of craft in which pieces are assembled, whether mosaics or quilting or large-scale projects like creating brick patterns in a patio. Aside from books I have about classical art, no other source seems close to providing the rich visuals.
This is certainly not a book to instruct beginners, in my opinion. The "how-to" information is cursory. For instance, a scant half page (and I do mean "scant") describes grouting. Projects, too, are probably beyond a beginner's ability. But the projects are, admittedly, really worth doing, not the kindergarten-looking bits featured in some books. There is a bit of information on cutting: only a bit. Comments along the lines of "with experience, you'll be able to master this technique" suggest to me that this author is more comfortable showing than describing technical aspects.
But what a grand showing this book provides. Many of the color photos are large enough to lend themselves to study in detail and there are a few sequences that show projects in process. Although the book will not provide in depth, specific information and instructions to beginners, anyone interested in mosaic will profit by studying the exquisite photos. The author shows some of this art's beauty that has allowed it to speak from antiquity far into the future. Drink in the colors, patterns, and forms -- and be seduced by the possibilities.
Best Mosaic book I have.......2002-06-19
This book is beautiful. Though, I definitely do not recommend this for beginners or for someone who wants step by step instructions. This book shows her taking some inspiration from ancient mosaics and then altering them for her own use. I have also done the same E.g. the front cover shows the leaves and lizards. I do a lot of paving stones. I simply just did two of the black leaves onto a white background onto a paving stone. Very simple, but gosh it looks great.
This book is more for inspiration only rather than a teaching book for beginners. I still highly recommend it though.
Glosses over basics.......2002-02-03
I have to disagree with those reviewers who have already weighed in on this book. Perhaps they are already experienced in making mosaics. As someone who has not done mosaics before, I was hoping for a little more discussion of the basics. For example, there is a list (and even photographs of) tools to use to cut tile, but not really any discussion on how to do it. Also, the history lesson on mosaics is somewhat brief, with not very many photographs of ancient mosaics.

Book Description
Positive Child Guidance 5E includes numerous revisions to make this practical, readable text even more developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and academically sound than its predecessor. Intended to equip adults with information for guiding, managing, and coping with childrenÂ's behavior, Positive Child Guidance 5E also helps to make sense of childrenÂ's efforts to understand their own emerging needs and feelings while handling adult expectations. Open-ended solutions are presented to encourage students to engage in higher levels of thinking, analyzing, and synthesizing. The text addresses the rightful positioning of both behavior modification and maturation within an overall effective guidance strategy. Positive Child Guidance 5E outlines workable methods for preventing or redirecting inappropriate behaviors and helping children grow up to be useful citizens in a democratic social structure. Innovative strategies include detailed information on using American Sign Language as a tool to empower young children in expressing themselves to support guidance. Inclusion of children with special needs is addressed in terms of guidance issues. In addition, this revised text addresses how the cultural differences of children, parents, and early childhood educators affect day-to-day guidance. Because no single guidance strategy is appropriate for all children at all ages, this book addresses typical characteristics and needs of children as they proceed through chronological and developmental stages. It provides a range of practical, effective, and flexible guidance strategies based on principles of straightforward communication and assertiveness. This book outlines practical, workable steps for creating a cooperative, respectful community of children and adults with special emphasis on sensitivity to cultural and gender-based needs and differences.

Guidance and Discipline.......2007-01-12
This is written as a text book but it is readable and practical and it is perfect for parents. Reading it is much like sitting down with a friend and talking about real day-to-day problems babies, toddlers and young children have as they learn to cope with their feelings and to comply with parents' rules for safe, responsible behavior.
The book has simple, practical lists of things to do when toddlers bite, preschoolers fight and school-aged children pick up bad words. It gives help on potty training, sleep problems and thumb-sucking. An in depth index makes it easy to find topics.
You will want to order a second copy to lend to friends so they don't take yours!!
Behaviour guidance is about developing self-control!.......2003-10-11
This is one of the best books that I have ever read. I am a 2nd year Early Childhood Education student and my brilliant professor suggested that we read this book for his class "Child Guidance." So many teachers struggle with challenging behaviour and this book describes positive techniques to use with children of all ages. Behaviour guidance is about helping children develop self-control, it's not about pleasing the teacher. Every teacher should read this book!!

From the author: The purpose of the study was to examine the interaction between parental smoking status and parental attitudes, as measured by positive parental concern, on the risk of adolescent cigarette smoking. Parental smoking and parental concern about smoking were measured in a cross-sectional study of 37,244 students, a random sample of Maryland middle and high school students, who were current or never smokers. Parental concern was classified into 3 levels: strict, moderate, and minimal. The likelihood of youths being current smokers was positively associated with both parental smoking (both versus neither parent smokes: odds ratio [OR] 3.4, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.1-3.7) and parental concern about smoking (minimal versus strict concern: OR 2.3, 95% CI 2.1-2.4). Youths with parents who did not smoke and with strict concern had the lowest likelihood of smoking. In comparison to this group, after adjustment for other social influences the likelihood of being a current smoker was more than 5 times greater among boys (OR 5.8, 95% CI 4.5-Z4) and girls (OR 5.2, 95% CI 4.1-6.5) whose parents both smoked and were minimally concerned about smoking. Current smoking in youths was independently associated with both parental smoking and less parental concern. When these 2 factors were jointly considered, the prevalence of current smoking in youths increased both with exposure to parental modeling and reduced parental concern about smoking. The results indicate that minimal parental concern about smoking worsens the risk due to parental modeling. Parental modeling and parental attitudes act synergistically to exacerbate the likelihood of smoking.
