4 out of 5 stars Balancing The Scales of Nature.......2002-11-20

A study in the perserverance and dedication of a group of people to bring the wolf back to its own enviroment in the wildernesses of Yellowstone Montanna. Full of information this book will elate you as well as sadden you, but the winner here of course is the wolf who once more runs free on his land.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the wolf's history & current issues.......2002-09-02

Jim Brandenberg always brings the wolf into our homes vividly and with great skill through his photographs, and in this book, these exquisite photos are paired up with the informative writing of Stephen Swinburne. Swinburne covers an excellent range of topics in this short (but highly-informative) book, including the history of the wolf's extermination in this country, early conservationists, wolf behavior and social structure, myth-busting, the Yellowstone project, and the wolf's future prospects.

He brings in quotes and information from Leopold, Mech, Bangs, Askins, and many other notable figures in the wolf conservation movement to give correct facts and information. I wouldn't call this a book for younger children; it's written at perhaps a teenager's level, and younger children might find the statistics and assorted other information boring. However, Swinburne does cover the bittersweet story of wolves Numbers Nine and Ten, which personalizes the struggles wolves today face.

Swinburne manages to succinctly cover most of the important issues in this relatively brief book (about a half hour's read, perhaps 45 minutes,) and it's a great way to educate yourself or someone else on the basics of wolf conservation. Highly-recommended!

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2000-07-29

I just took a look at this book and was so impressed. The subject is fascinating, of course, but I'm especially taken with the clear, cogent writing, the terrific quotes, and the truly remarkable photographs. I definitely recommend this for any kid (or adult, for that matter) with an interest in wildlife.

5 out of 5 stars a thoroughly moving natural history lesson for all ages.......2000-06-07

My 7 year old and I read this book together recently and I think that I learned as much as she did.

I knew about reintroduction of wild wolves into Yellowstone but this book told the whole story. Get ready to be impressed with personal sagas of determination and bravery on the part of people who care about wild things.

In 1973, while on a field trip in Jasper Park, Alberta, I saw two wild wolves (a white and a black) bounding and romping in the snow. I will never forget the wildness of that sight. This book is richly illustrated with photographs of wolves that give you a glimpse of that wildness.

Get this book and read it with a child to share what Rachel Carson called that "sense of wonder" that children have. Be prepared to explain why we systematically exterminated the wolf from its range throughout the United States and why we paid people to kill wolf puppies.

This book is a moving, thoughtful lesson in ecology for children of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars SECOND IN THE "SIGN OF THE GREY WOLF" series.......2002-12-29

Burke Silentman becomes a living character in his story of Navajo Justice.

He is the top operative in the organization of Sign of the Grey Wolf -- headed by the much disguised "Handler".

He has been asigned to protect the author, Laura Santos from an unknown threat uncovered by Doug Begay.

Laura has a number of suspects for the break in of her house -- but what were they looking for? What about Ken Springer who does not want to take no for an answer. Is he a serious stalker?

Just what would Ken Maurer risk doing to keep his Center operating? Was Nicole Maurer in league with her husband or did she have other fish to fry?

Michael Enesco was frightening the elderly members of the Center with his reckless driving. What was his connection to Nicole?

Once again the big black dog, Wolf adds his humor to the situations and boy does he have sharp teeth. Go get 'em big fella!

Good moving pace - enough excitement to keep you wondering - although Silentmen talks too much for an undercover operation. And dippy do - PMS shows up - can't see where it enhances the story but that is just me. Hey guys, [intercourse] does not lead to love.

All in all, tolerable -- good while it lasts - recommended --M - needs more Indian potency.

Author Bruce Swanson has more than thirty year's experience teaching history, often with a focus on Native American culture; Gray Wolf's Search is his picturebook about a young Native American told by his uncle, a shaman, that his future role in the clan depends upon locating a very important person. Gray Wolf goes on a journey to find and get to know this person - yet returns with unparalleled wisdom: "The very important person is you, and you, and you... Through all my travels, I found that no one is more important than another. Each one of us is a very important person." Artist Gary Peterson draws upon the primal vibrance of indigenous culture and reverence for the natural world in the captivating color illustrations of this recommended storybook.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book and classic story.......2007-02-12

Gray Wolf is a classic story of a young boy learning about himself and the natural world around him. The author and illustrator clearly share a love for the Pacific Northwest and its rich heritage.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Different kind of kid's book........2002-05-14

This is one of those children's picture books that doesn't quite fit a given, standardized genre. In many ways, it bucks the trends, refuses to be pigeonholed, and is a departure from the norm.

While "The Eyes of Grey Wolf" is indeed supposed to be a children's book, it defies description and genre in such unique ways as to make it fit for any age group. Best of all, the story is guaranteed to stay with you, despite taking up only thirty pages.

Written in a short, to-the-point, and almost poetic prose style that conjures up Native American folk tales, the book is equal parts kids book and adult literature. And the paintings? Absolutely glorious in their realistic depiction of Gray Wolf's adventure on a snowy, moonlit night. The effect of combining both the stylized writing and luminous art is an almost magical tale that could have come from Native legends.

Included at the end is a page or two with factual information on wolves, and contact information for some wolf conservation groups. Overall, an excellent book for any youngster's report on wolves, endangered species, or the environment.

The book is relatively short, but do not let that dissuade you from purchasing it. Once you've read it, you'll be glad to have "The Eyes of Grey Wolf" in your collection.

To author London and illustrator Van Zyle, I say thank you for putting this project together.

          4 out of 5 stars London's story is entrancing.......2000-07-22

By looking into Grey Wolf's entrancing yellow eyes, we are able to grasp the radiance and spirit of these magnificent animals. Grey Wolf has lost his mate to a steel trap that man had set in the forest. We hear his howling, his "untamed music." It echoes from the mountains. Through illustrations of moonlit valleys hugged by the still night air, we become part of Gray Wolf's quest. He finds a pack in night's stillness and his eyes dance with the eyes of the pack leader. A white wolf separates herself from the pack and she and Gray Wolf circle each other. "Even the trees seem to hold their breath." Then the wolves trot off across the snow and soon curl up together to wait for spring. They will make a new pack of their own. The poetic prose written for a lower elementary audience and magnificent drawings vividly depict the great beauty of the wolf. At the end of the book, the author lists many preservation groups and shows a map of the wolf's range in North America in the 1700's versus its range today. This book is a wonderful starting point to educate children about the wolf's endangered status in the lower 48 states (except Minnesota where they are threatened). There are many wolf recovery programs in the United States including the Wolf Reintroduction Program at Yellowstone.

          5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-10-09

This book is awesome. Although, as someone else said, a few of the items are not the best representation of their period, they are all quite gorgeous. I have made a few of them already, they are easy to draft and the ones I've made luckily were my size! It's a great reference, it's extremely detailed in construction (not a how to, but an explanation of the details of what they did.) Overall, a fantastic book at a great price! If you want something with more sizing for the bustle era, try Fashions of the Gilded Age.

3 out of 5 stars English womens dresses 1860-1940.......2007-08-27

Very good book showing how the dresses were made. However I found that the clothing that were shown were for the higher class of people than what I was looking for. I was interested in the regular day to day clothing of the average woman, home or working.

4 out of 5 stars The Victorian costume reference.......2007-03-09

...I just totally felt in love with this book as a student a couple of years ago and what a good surprise to find it back, now, on Amazon....Amazing references on the Victorian main silhouette, good selection of patterns and relevant information on the inside construction of the styles proposed. A lot of visual, sketch are clear and the ideas suggested are really interesting. I am a pattern maker myself so I never used the patterns as is from this book, but pick up a lot of information and integrate it in my projects... You probably need at least a bit of experiences as a seamstress or pattern making to fully appreciate and understand it. I personally recommend it. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful addition to a costumers library.......2007-02-08

This book is one of the essential books for a historical costumer! The authentcation and documentation can not be disputed, and the patterns are easy to follow and construct!

There are few things on the planet that can drive an adult crazy as fast as a ceaselessly whining child--we are often reduced to tantrums ourselves by this incessant complaining. If we were just better parents, our kids wouldn't have to act this way to get our attention, right? Not exactly. Whining happens because, often, it works. Whining also happens at any age and in many forms, and can be a very destructive behavior pattern if allowed to continue into adulthood. In this extremely useful and practical little book (you can read it in a couple of sittings), the authors explain how whining functions for both the child and parent and how the latter can deal with it. The recommended techniques are based on the work of pioneering psychiatrist Alfred Adler, and are gentle and respectful to both parent and child but also firm in setting limits for acceptable behavior. Authors Audrey Ricker and Carolyn Crowder teach parents how to dive beneath the admittedly choppy surface of whining by communicating assertively and then to change things from underneath the maelstrom. Numerous "real-life" examples are offered, as well as corresponding methods of response, but the scripts wisely shy away from a simplistic "one-size-fits-all" solution. The notebook at the back of the book will help families keep track of exactly what is going on and assist in reducing whining so that everyone in the family interacts more peacefully and productively. --Katherine Ferguson

                Book Description

Are you ready to end the whining wars in your house?

It starts with a whimper, an insistent demand, or a certain tone of voice that every parent recognizes with dread -- your child is starting to whine, and if you don't respond properly you'll have a full-blown tantrum or argument on your hands. Kids of all ages know that whining works when they want that extra hour of TV, the unplanned toy purchase, or a later curfew. But stopping such behavior without giving in to a child's demands isn't easy, and if left unchecked, whining can lead to constant disruptions at home, in school, or anywhere else your child chooses. Now the same authors who solved a common parenting problem in the national bestseller Backtalk present three proven methods for putting an end to whining, as well as information on

                * The best ways to react when your child whines in a public place

                * Why negotiating and giving in never work -- and what you should do instead

                * What kids are really trying to tell you when they whine

                * Why whining can lead to poor self-esteem and unsatisfying social relationships -- which can follow your child into adulthood -- and what you can do about it now

                * How to clearly, respectfully indicate to your child what's important to you and why whining will no longer work as a means of communication

Filled with numerous real-life examples, encouraging advice, and simple steps you can start using immediately, this invaluable guide will help you end the cycle of giving in to whining only to have your child do it again, and instead replaces misbehavior with effective, meaningful, and loving parent-child communication.

                5 out of 5 stars This Works!!!.......2002-09-18

...This book teaches a respectful, productive, kind way to deal with whining, backtalk, temper tantrums, arguing, and all those bad habits that kids pick up. This does work on pre-lingual children. I used it with my child before she was 1. I found myself struggling with behavior again in the 4s and 5s and read this book and went back to applying the principles. They do work. You'll be amazed and your child will be happier. This brought peace to our home. It's easy to read and give lots of examples. Both parents need to be informed and commited to sticking to the plan. ...There is no heartlessness in this plan. There is no spanking, time out, or counting. If you're frustrated with your child's behavior and how it is controlling your family, read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good main ideas + a few bad ideas.......2002-08-20

The main ideas of the Whining book are good and from what I've witnessed, effective not only for stopping whining, but for the personal growth of the child. Unfortunately, some of the secondary points and applications of the main points contradict the main points, and can even be harmful to the child, short and long-term. Overall, I recommend the book, however, a parent must be careful in picking and choosing which of these principles and applications to follow:

                Strengths and good points:
                · Clear, concise writing.
                · The book does a fairly good job defining whining, its purpose and the disservice this does to the child and the family.
                · Good idea: When a whining incident occurs in public, remove the child from the scene.
                · Another good idea: Parents announce ahead of time that whining will result in an automatic "no". It's important not to reward whining.
                · The authors recommend logical consequences for whining, no second chances.
                · The recommendations for assertive and respectful communication to children are excellent ones. Do not yell at children or sink to any disrespectful communication with them.
                · The chapter on providing children with responsibility in the family (chores) so they'll feel like important contributing members is an excellent one. Important contributing members are less likely to seek attention in negative ways. Furthermore, they learn responsibility and become less self-centered.

                Weaknesses and bad points:
                · Bad idea: The authors instruct parents to ignore children completely when they whine at home. This undermines the idea that parents are to treat children with respect. The silent treatment is completely disrespectful whether the person on the receiving end is a child or adult. And I'm sure parents don't want to encourage their children to tune them out! The parent can do a modified form of ignoring by saying, "I'll be happy to talk with you, when you talk to me in a respectful manner." THEN they can ignore whining, but reward respectful communication with talking.
                · The example of ignoring the 5 year-old boy who refuses to go to bed merely allows him to get away with the behavior. There needs to be a consequence, such loss of TV or Gameboy privileges.
                · In recommending consequences be accomplished with a minimum of words, the authors err in under-explaining consequences to children. Explain once and clearly so the child knows exactly why the consequence was enacted. Do not be drawn into a battle, but do explain!
                · A few examples contradict authors' own points. They say to use logical consequences when tasks are not completed, yet the 13 year-old who refuses to bring groceries in the house is cheerfully told, "Well maybe next week." No consequences at all!
                · Food should NEVER be withheld as a consequence, unlike some of the examples in the book. This is cruel and unusual punishment in the short-term, and can contribute to eating disorders in the long-term.
                · The sample 14-day "Parent Progress Diary" is 14 pages of filler. It would suffice to provide one blank page and suggest the parent reproduces it.

Despite the weaknesses, I still recommend the book based on the strength of the main ideas. However, since there are some faulty examples, I recommend discretion in applying the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars This book really works!.......2001-07-12

The key to helping your children learn to not whine is to change your own behaviour towards them. Model respectful behaviour. Loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars Really good Ideas.......2001-06-10

I really loved this book and my boys ages 2.5 and just turned 4 have really turned around. My 4 year old was so whiny I got the book for him, but it worked even better at taming the tantrums of my two year old that I had chalked up to "normal" 2year old behavior. The most important element, the one I was missing is the element of contribution. They are doing chores, and helping out and really enjoying it. Dinner time is a delight now. They behave and sit until they are done and then clear their plates. It has only been a few weeks and I was amazed immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Do You Want To Reduce Your Child's Whining and Tantrums?.......2001-01-29

Children are more intelligent than you think. They know how to get results by whining and adults even encourage them to do this. When a child whines, it is not about a toy which they canot have nor the things they have been forbidden to do. It is about being able to show mother and father how much power they posses. Our first child is nearing his 3rd birthday and the whining had increased to intolerable levels. We have found a great amount of success in using the exercises in this book. It has taken several weeks for our child to finally come around but it has worked well. It doesn't work all the time but the tantrums and the commanding have subsided dramatically. I do not believe there is any one particular authority on child behavior because all children are able to learn but all children learn differently... Understanding why children whine makes it much easier to implement these solutions which sometime can appear to be somewhat harsh if one hasn't read the whole book.
