Respect and Fear in Alaska.......1999-12-24
I read this first hand account of the nature and individual personalities of the Alaskan Brown Bear as a young teenager, and it left an indelible mark on my ecological psyche. Mr. Dufresne's writing and stories are captivating, and you don't doubt for a moment the authenticity of each tale. My parents bought this book for my library, and I read it over and over (particularly the story about the 25th Bear). If you want to gain a new respect for non-humans as well as humans, don't miss this one!

The Ultimate in shibori instruction and history.......2007-05-14
I knew this was "THE" book to have for shibori technique instructions. However, the very pleasant surprise was all the history of shibori! It would be fascinating even if I wasn't intending to learn the technique. The instructions are very clearly presented. I have already tried a couple of the techniques with very good results and I'm only a beginner!
A must have.......2007-05-13
This is an essential tool and starting point for any shibori artist. Exhaustive history and diagrams and examples. I used this book in my fierarts classes and recently purchased it for home studio use.
Great Overview of a Somewhat Obscure Textile Art.......2007-03-06
Shibori is a wonderful craft and this book gives an excellent history of it. Many wonderful historical and contemporary examples are shown. Techniques are given as well, and are for the most part usable. If you do shibori work, this book is essential for your library.
One of the best Shibori books written.......2006-08-08
Being a member of the Seattle Weavers' Guild, I've been lucky enough to have friends teach Shibori and other resist dyeing in our group. This book is terrific and details the 'how to' very well. I'm very pleased to have this book in my library and I have to say the price was excellent.
A "must have" resource book.......2006-07-10
This is an invaluable resource for any textile arts student. Or any shibori enthusiast. Detailed illustrations and exceptional photos help define and identify ancient techniques and MAY encourage elbow-deep participation among the adventurous. Gambatte!

Beautiful Presentation, Great Ideas.......2000-06-09
As a novice gardener, I have found many instructional books to be overwhelming; their scope is often too wide for my purposes. The Garden Project Workbook Series, however, provides clear instructions for a variety of creative yet practical designs.
With help from "Beds and Borders" I was able to implement my own design for a small border in my tiny front yard, a step that I would not have been able to accomplish on my own.
All of the books in this series are topical and very worthwhile. I highly recommend them.

Fences, hedges, walls, trellises, and screens form the structure around which any garden is framed. Using these elements effectively permits the savvy gardener to "divide and conquer" and creatively highlight certain garden features while masking others, providing shade, privacy, striking visual effects and defining distinct areas of the garden for aesthetic or practical reasons. Richard Bird gives the reader many ideas for projects, including a fruit wall, formal and informal hedges, a picket fence, a rustic trellis, a rose arch, and more than 20 projects that the enthusiastic gardener can duplicate or customize from this elaborately illustrated, lovely handbook of ideas. --Mark A. Hetts
Customer Reviews:
TRULY, THE BEST BOOK IN MY GARDEN LIBRARY!.......1999-07-01
For one of the least expensive gardening books I have ever purchased, this one is exremely helpful and even inspirational! Four of the 20 garden projects included in this workbook were on my list of things I had always wanted to do, but could never find the specific 'how to' information. So, in addition to looking at beautiful pictures of the Beech hedge I always wanted to plant or the Madame Alfred Carriere rose fanned out against a house wall, I now have a complete list of the exact materials and equipment needed as well thoroughly written steps and stages. After reading it from beginning to end, I find at least four more garden projects to add to the 'must do' list! Thank you!!

Customer Reviews:
This book is a must have.......2003-07-17
Charlie Dimmock is great. She has wonderful ideas and plans for the watergardens. I think if someone wants a lovely water feature in there yard this is the book to have....=o)
Idiot-proof water gardening.......2002-10-10
Admittedly, I am somewhat biased toward this author as I enjoy "Ground Force" more than any other home improvement show and have converted several friends from HGTV over to BBC America.
The plans and designs are honest. They clearly outline how much time it will take, the safety aspect and estimated costs (In british currency). I have noticed that her costs seem a bit low, but it may be the geographic differences. Mostly, I use this on a relativity scale. (This pond is more difficult/costly than that one)
She shows wisdom and experience in her discussion of the use of native plants and introduction of wildlife. Unfortunately, there is a bit of difference between Los Angeles and London native plants, but if you apply the general idea, you can't go wrong.
The practical ideas, like: "Don't put a fountain in a windy area" or "How to hide the pipes in a wall mounted fountain" are essential things to think about once you have it your head that you must have a water element in your yard.
My husband owns a landscape design company and he frequently uses her book to narrow down a client's broad vision. A great garden library addition for a professional or an amatuer!!
Photos and help from gardens seen on the show.......2002-07-08
Out of all the Ground Force books, we used this one the most. It helped us put in a pond in our yard complete with a vase that bubbled water over and went down a chute to the pond. The book covers many different water features including a raised tank water garden, one with waterfalls, small ones like just a vase that bubbles over, and many others. The photos are very helpful and even more enjoyable if you get to see the episode on the BBC show that the water features were on.
