nine for California.......2003-05-15
Hi, everybody! Do you know why you should read this book? Because it is a whole lot of fun to read and exciting things happen. Mama packs her bags and takes her kids with her to California to meet Papa. The first thing that happens is the baby got sick. Then the buffalo come. Mama says, "Amanda, get the pepper out of my sack and give some to everyone but Baby Betsy!" Then some men come and tried to rob them, but Amanda played her brother's whistle and they went away. I give this story 5 stars!
Nine for California.......2003-05-15
You should read this book! It's really, really funny especially the Mama. If I had to eat prunes for dessert, I would throw up! But, anyways you should read this book. My favorite problem was the buffalo stampede.
Nine for California.......2003-05-15
This book was so fun to read. It has action in it. The words were so funny. I liked when baby Betsy threw up! Amanda is a very brave girl - you'll have to read it to find out why. Mama had a big bag for the things they need. They were going to California from Missouri. When they got there, Daddy asked Mama what happened. You'll have to read it to find out.
Californ-y Here We Come!.......2003-05-15
Yaa -hoo! Mama, Baby Betsy and Amanda (the Narrator) and the two other kids are going to California to meet their papa. Mama has brought a bag of answers! Weird...right! A big buldging bag on a stagecoach...but that bag saves everybody's lives - thanks to Mama. This book is awesome.
Nine for California.......2003-05-15
This book is about Mama and her children, the sack and other people on their way to California. They have lots of hardships on their way to California like outlaws and a buffalo stampede. The answers to all of their problems were in the "sack". The main characters are Amanda and Mama. They finally get to Californ-y and meet Daddy.

WOW.......2006-07-31
This book is GREAT!! I read it in one day I was so into the book. L Rifkin is a great author using so much incredible detail. I love how at the end of the books there is a lot of suspense (even though you know Romeo dies) and I can't wait for the next book!
The Continuation of an Awesome Story! .......2006-05-04
We bought this book at the LA Festival of Books where we had come upon the first book last year. We purchased the book on Sunday and my 10 year old daughter had finished it by Tuesday. She is describing it for me here: The second story picks up where the 1st left off when Romeo awakes from the "death" of his first life. He tries to help a friend, Twinkletoes, who is having problems with his owners. Romeo continues to have difficulties with "The Alleys," or wild cats and their leader, Fiddle. Fiddle has a horrible plan to destroy the "Stics" forever.. Could the authors please hurry up with the 3rd book's release??
Product Description
Awakening scared and confused from his second death, Romeo finds himself in the deepest, most forbidden place there is, Vent City. Falling into immediate peril, a stranger plucks him to safety only to reveal himself as a long, lost relative. After reluctantly meeting the gruesome Vent City mutants and hearing their heart-wrenching story, they band together to finally get their just revenge from the viscous Alleys who have taken control of the Factory. But a crushing illness threatens to end it all for Romeo, ultimately taking him away from his beloved Dennis forever. Will Romeo's third life be spared in time to face Fidel and bring the Factory back to its rightful owners? Or will the Alleys win again?

WoW.......2007-05-31
WoW is pretty much the only way to sum up this book. I used to review children's books for the local paper, and this would have to be one of the best I've come across. L. Rifkin's story is a MASTERPIECE. This is a story that is fun for children and adults to enjoy. L. Rifkin weaves together a story of action, suspense, and humor to create a great children's novel.
My Daughter Loves It.......2007-05-31
My daughter recently finished reading this book and loved it. L. Rifkin is clearly a talented writer with a very promising literary future. I purchased the Romeo Crumb books for my daughter a few weeks ago and she has even shown more enthusiasm for these books than for Harry Potter, which she also loves. Thank God cats have nine lives because my daughter can't wait to read about the rest of them!
Amazing Book!.......2007-05-31
This book is absolutely fantastic! I have read all the Romeo Crumb books with my son and we are both in love with them. The characters are hysterical and I definetly recommend these books for every parent and child. The third installment was witty and engaging and neither my son nor I could put the book down. 5 Stars and then some!
Of shockingly poor quality.......2007-04-11
"Life Three" is so full of errors, I have a hard time knowing where to begin. I found misspellings, words that were used incorrectly,(note to author: please consult a dictionary before writing Life Four) incorrect or missing puncutation, unnecessary italics...it was a veritable comedy of errors. Too bad it's just not funny. It was so awful, I began to wonder if I had obtained a copy printed before it had gone through an editing process. Both the dialogue and the prose are clumsy, immature and lackluster. This made me think the author must be quite young and has not yet honed proper storytelling skills. Imagine my surprise to discover that the author is a TEACHER. Good lord. She needs to be in a remedial English class herself, not teaching it. This sounds harsh, I know, but I think I have a right to expect at least some degree of competence from a published author. My advice to L. Rifkin is to fire her current editor and find herself one who will actually DO SOME EDITING to help her improve.
Book Description
In this new paperback edition of the award winning, "The Nine Lives of Romeo Crumb - Life One", the secret world of cats is revealed in an epic tale of feline civil war where we first meet young Romeo, a stray who finds himself battered between two very different worlds. It's the domestic cats, the Sticks, vs. the street cats, the Alleys, as battle lines are drawn, warriors train for combat and a hero emerges to inspire a nation. Fraught with danger from page one, Romeo loses his family, finds a new home with "his person", 9-year old Dennis Crumb, and is befriended by a wise cat who lives nearby. "Life One" ends with Romeo's first death. But fear not, our hero-in-the-making lives again in "Life Two".

It's the Cat's Meow!.......2007-06-01
Loved this book and have gone on to read the other two in the series so far. What an original concept and so beautifully executed. My [..]daughter had a "Romeo Crumb" birthday party where the girls all read their favorite parts of the books aloud. L. Rifkin (a man or woman?) is the next J.K. Rowling!
A Display of poor taste, incompetently written.......2007-04-14
As an adult who likes fantasy-fiction based on cats, I found the series on Romeo Crumb (3 books to date) disappointing both in their story and in their value as a literary product. The premise underlying each book is violence and arbitrary conflict between the "good" domestic cats (called Stiks) and the very very "bad" homeless cats (the Allies). Anyone who knows anything about cats knows that there are nasty housecats and ferals sweet as angels, so I wasn't taken in by this way of imposing a crude imitation of good versus evil onto a story supposedly about cats. Equally ominous is the sense of cosmic evil lurking in the background of human lives tortured by poverty, helplessness, and hopelessness.
Characterization is for the most part crude. Cute little girl cats are little more than that, cute paper dolls. Even Romeo himself is shallow and it is hard to maintain interest in his fate. Granted, there are some attempts at wry humor, as the most disgusting figures turn out to be the most heroic. Heroic because they die.
The literary product is clumsy and poorly organized. The verbal expression is full of misspelled words and ungrammatical phrases, like the work of a pre-teen with a poor education. Definitely not the kind of material to signal any sort of literary talent.
The contemporary novels by Erin Hunter in the Warriors series are far more effective and competently written, despite their trend towards shallow characters and skimpy plot lines. Tad Williams' Tailchaser holds up to repeated readings, something hard to find in books of this sort. My overall favorite is an out-of-print one-off by Joy Smith Aiken entitled Solo's Journey. Too bad there aren't more like it in a genre of animal-based fiction that is only too hard to find.
Greatest Fantasy Cat Book Ever!.......2006-05-04
My daughter read this book when she was nine and would like readers to know that she found its action, dialogue and characters to be captivating. She would recommend this book highly because it's great to see the world from a cat's perspective. For instance, catnip is called "The Nip" and it's viewed as extremely harmful from the cats' viewpoint, whereas humans think it's fun to watch cats' behavior after they've had some. Read this book and you will have a sudden urge to read Book Two!!
What A Great Read!.......2005-09-14
My 11 year old son, who doesn't like to read, bought this book at a book fair and couldn't put it down. I read it too and loved it. We both found it exciting, funny, and well worth our time. You will too. Romeo Crumb is a great character. Don't miss this one! Can't wait to read about his other 8 lives.
THE NINE LIVES OF ROMEO CRUMB-LIFE ONE.......2005-05-25
This is a wonderful book filled with detailed storytelling, visual images that stimulate the imagination, and witty dialogue. L. Rifkin takes us inside the world of cats as they live their lives, and soon one forgets they are cats because the situations are so humanlike. Both my 3rd grader and my 6th grader loved Romeo and his friends and villains, which prompted me to read the book as well. Children have become such sophistacted readers since the emergence of "Harry Potter", and I feel L. Rifkin never talks down to them and presents the dangers of animal life accurately and with fun. We can't wait for "Life Two."

Book Description
Which insect, from the moment she becomes pregnant, is eaten from the inside by her own brood until she is nothing but a dry husk? Which mollusk sometimes engages in sex so rough that its penis breaks off and is absorbed into the body of the female? Which fish, while still in its mother's oviduct, gobbles up as many as a dozen of its siblings so that by the time its born it is the only survivor?
There's a reason they're called animals they don't behave like people. The various ways they do behave, however, are fascinating, particularly when they're explained as entertainingly as they are in Kinky Cats, Immortal Amoebas and Nine-Armed Octopuses. Divided into 25 chapters on such subjects as marriage, adultery, divorce, incest and birth control, this extraordinary collection of bite-size bits of information will forever change the way readers look at their neighbors in the animal world.
For the curious, the answers to the above questions are: (1) midges, (2) octopuses and (3) sand and mackerel sharks.

The Adventure of AdventureCat.......2003-06-17
The Nine Lives of AdventureCat
By Susan Cyber
Susan Cyber has an excellent style of writing adventures about animals. The story begins with MomCat telling AdventureCat and his brothers and sisters that they are on their own. AdventureCat brave because he went on an Adventure to find a new home where he would be loved. He is also kind hearted because he wanted a home instead of being on the streets.
AdventureCat trotted to their neighborýs farm. A truck backed up and ran over AdventureCatýs tail. He thinks it is not going to be easy living on his own.
But in the middle of the story, AdventureCat begins to show bravery. He ran up in a tree when a strange pet named Pickles chased him, and he went into a tree house.
In the tree house there was a boy. The boy went home and brought AdventureCat too. AdventureCat was searching for a home and found one.
I love adventure stories about animals and this is a winner. This book stays quite serious throughout the story. This book reminded of Redwall.

Ribbon Embroidery Transfers.......2007-06-26
Although I have not had the opportunity to actually work with the material provided in this book, it is very concise and done in a clear manner. Also, the shipment arrived in a short time period, which I appreciated.
Big Disappointment.......2006-09-02
This book has only a few pages of text/instructions. Transfer designs are simplistic and none are illustrated. No pictures; all in black and white. I did give it two stars because it documents the basic embroidery stitches - although even they are not that clear. IMHO - not worth the shipping and handling.
Helpful Book For Beginners!.......2000-05-12
For someone who has never done transfers, nor tried my hand at ribbon embroidary, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy this new craft was going to be. It's a perfect starter book, and she even has a flower for "X" in her ABC alphabet, which is Xeranthemum (Straw Flower). Money well spent for anyone who is looking for instructions on "how to" do ribbon embroidary. I am so glad this was my first book, she made it look easy and fun, and it was!

Book Description
This passionate gardener's daily record of a growing season adds up to one of the best pieces of garden writing in years. But this book is about much more than planting, tending, and harvesting a vegetable garden. It's about all the things that influence this gardener: the weather, the neighborhood, his wife's possibly recurring cancer, the changing nature of the academic community; it's about the last months of his twenty-year-old cat, about his dog, and about all the other humans and animals in his gardening world. And about his family: the aunts and uncles who cared for and fed a six-year-old orphan and instilled in him the understanding that good food was a way of knowing that someone cared. In all the gardens he has tended, the dills he has pickled, and the dinners he has cooked, Klaus has tried to carry on that tradition and pass it on to his own children. No reader will come away from My Vegetable Love untouched by the humor, the lyrical quality of the writing, and above all the

A Guide to Understanding Yourself and Others.......2000-08-20
The book Dr Savage wrote was absolutely electrifying to me! I did not expect to have answers and solutions to my personal and social questions. As an example, I was stunned to realize that I cry, when my husband directs his anger at me because I was emotionally abused as a child. That was something that never occurred to me. And I better understand things like why women stay with me who are severely abusive to them. As a result of reading his book, I'm noticing when I start to sabotage my hearts desire and I can reverse that action. I think if I read this book over and over I will continue to glean true jewels of understanding about myself and those around me. I definitely take this book personally. I think everyone could use this as a guide book to improve their life and understand the people of the world a little better.
Good Read with Some Great Advice.......2000-07-09
I first saw this book while browsing for something completely different. The price was right so i decided to pick it up. I really wasnt expecting much at all from it, but was pleasantly surprised to find it explained alot where behavior comes from when dealing with others in plain English. I wouldnt say it gives enough advice to do as the title says, but it does give alot of insight into re-evaluating past rejection--especailly with families. I feel this book has a lot of pontential, but unfortuantely doesnt explore things into as much depth as i would prefer. I would also have liked to see more said about approaching things and how to change instead of just exploring where certain things come from. However, it has a lot of great ideas presented clearly. All in all, a good book.
Understand and tackle rejection!.......2000-02-03
"Don't Take it Personally" is a wonderful guide to exploring the rejection encountered in family, intimate, office, and social relationships. Elayne Savage's personalized and clear style engaged me from the beginning and led me through the process of identifying, understanding and taking control of my rejection issues. Dr. Savage establishes a comfortable atmosphere to understand the impact of childhood experiences of rejection on adult relationships and expectations, and helped me to realize that I am not alone in my feelings. In fact, throughout the book I often found myself exclaiming "Wow, that's me!"
A sensible and compassionate approach to a painful problem.......1999-10-17
I usually find that the average self-help book could be boiled down to a long magazine article and not lose anything valuable in the process, but "Don't Take It Personally" is different. Dr. Savage is obviously a very experienced therapist; I especially like the perceptive way she explores the many reasons we allow other people's opinions and comments to wound us. I recognized my own tendencies in several of the case histories presented, and was also impressed by her canny analysis of clients' family background. I can't say that reading "Don't Take It Personally" has cured me for good of my hypersensitivity, but I do feel that I have a better grip on it: when someone criticizes me now, I'm far more likely to remind myself, "That's simply her viewpoint; she may be right or wrong, but it doesn't have to define who I am." Taking control of your own life is a great experience, and Dr. Savage's book is a useful tool for getting you there.
A very informative and touching book........1999-07-29
A wonderful book that offers practical advice for not taking things so personally. Elayne Savage's writing is clear and easy to understand as well as being very touching. I have come away from this book with a whole new understanding of my own patterns with taking things personally and I feel now that I have some of the tools necessary to make changes in my life.
