Re-publication of Articles from Practical Horseman Magazine.......2007-03-03
I'm sure I overlooked the disclaimer, but it appears this book is a compilation of the series of "Practical Horseman" magazine articles that Ms. Gray authored several years back. Still good information, of course, but I wouldn't have purchased that book had I known that. (I saved the magazine articles to a binder, you see.)
Should be a 4.50, but there's no intermediate step on the stars.......2007-01-29
Let me start by saying, I really think this is a good book to have in one's library. Why? In succinct, but not short or even overly brief statements, Lendon Gray provides chunks of information that neither overwhelm nor talk down to the reader.
Having ridden twice in the Olympics, she knows obviously a lot more about dressage than most of us. What makes this book a pleasure is the presentation. She does it on a straight-forward approach as if talking to someone who is on the same level as her. There is a sense of equality between writer and reader's level of knowledge. In other words, she does not come across as a "I know it all and you know nothing."
All the information throughout the 25 lessons are chunked into small pieces, each comes with a succinct heading that gives the reader a clue as to what she will talk about in the next third or so column. What made this book very useful to me are the images of "right / correctly" and "wrong / incorrectly" applied principles. She details what can be done to correct wrong workings in very good depth, which makes this very useful for either between lessons or for those who do not have the opportunity of working with a dressage trainer on a regular basis.
I can recommend this book for most levels of riding, but believe that as with many books, it will be most useful to those who work in Training through lower Level 2 stages. Advanced Level 2 through Grand Prix riders will be far to knowledgeable to get a great deal of use out of this. But for the majority of riders, I think this book is great and it delivers what it set out to do: teach from start of riding to the first competition. It also provides a great place to go back and figure out "what went wrong" to help correct problems that creep up in riding.
Lessons with Lendon.......2006-06-27
The book is well written so the average person who is either starting out or is early in a riding carrer will benefit. I particularly liked the fact that she believes all basic dressage will help in what ever riding carrer you may wish to take. She spells out the riders total responsiblity verses the horse which I found to be very refreshing. I gave it 4 stars only because it was pitched below where I thought the book was based on the reviews.
Lessons with Lendon.......2004-10-28
This book is a reprint of a series Lendon Grey did for Practical Horseman Magazine some years ago. Excellent book, well done with very clear concepts and goals. The lessons are set up in a very logical order with lots of pointers on how to make the exercises work for you and your horse and what to do if you are not getting the right response. Each chapter ends with a riding challenge. This book is well worth the money, a great resource for student and teacher alike. You will return to it over and over again.
Good book.......2004-08-27
I found this book helpful. It is easy to understand and also has pictures for those who are more visual in their learning process. It covers a lot of the basics, which some need to go back to to help them in the more advanced movements of dressage. Dressage can be very initimidating with the language that is used, but this book explains terminology and concepts. This book also has "Lendons Challenges" which cover the more common errors riders tend to make when doing the different movements. The only fault I found was the majority of horses are wearing flash nosebands. To me this is a fashion of the times and curbs the horses potential.

Town "rush" versus country "paradise" - it is not a new subject!.......2007-07-27
1854: could you imagine on that time the town "rush" could be a bigger motivator to return to country? Yes, that was the situation of the author. It is a description of how an urban family "returned" to country through a systematic approach, something uncommon on that time worldwide. Their concept was explored in the last 150 years by most of "small rural property" text and recommendation from Government Agencies and private authors, but it was delicious to read first impressions from that time. Great reading.

Excellent info.......2006-05-19
Finally someone to provide information on a growing form of in hand showing. Great information for anyone learning to show Sport horses in hand. Everything from the training, the pattern, attire, grooming.
In Hand.......2003-10-09
This book is the first of its kind to cover showing the sporthorse and hunter in-hand. It covers all that one needs to know to prepare for the show, from training the horse, to grooming, to presenting the horse. There is also a lot of information to help a person learn what to look for when buying a sporthorse.
This book can be useful to the training of any young horse, whether it is to be shown or not, because the horse learns respect and how to behave in the presence of its handler.

Excellent for information on breeding & showing cattle........2000-07-02
"Beef Cattle Breeding,Feeding and Showing" is exactly what the title portrays.A well written and very informative book covering most aspects of Beef Cattle production. Easily understood by the novice it also has valuable information for the more experienced. This book covers other topics such as conformation,and touches on genetics.It also has a helpful section on Health. The section on Showing is great,as there is not a lot of information available on show ring protocol and preparing animals for the show ring. I would recommend this book to all Beef Breeders especially beginners.

taking horse training to the next level.......2007-09-06
truely an exquisite book: like no one before, mark russell has illuminated old world classical training techniques and made them accessible and applicable in our every day horse training.
and in between the lines of this thoughtfully presented material, mark reminds us why we have come to horses in the first place: utmost care for the horse's well being throughout the whole training process is evident in the constant search for relaxation and lightness (of and to the aids), and thus enjoyment in our dance with the horse.
EXCELLENT BOOK.......2006-11-11
this is a good book on training and the philosophy of training I Think one will find it useful regardless of disipline (English, Western, Racing, Dressage, Reining etc
A "How To" Book About Riding in Lightness.......2005-06-03
If you've always thought there was more to riding than driving and restraining, if you've been searching for an instructor who could blend the best of classical dressage and natural horsemanship, then this book is your answer. The wording is concise and the exercises are understandable and practical for riders of all disciplines. Mark Russell's training is broken down into three phases for the reader. This system makes the material easily understood by the human and ultimately the horse. Importance is placed on working the horse "in hand" through various schooling exercises, then the ridden exercises are covered. Some topics include lateral work, the half-halt, transitions, and flying changes. In addition, there is a valuable chapter on body mechanics of the horse and rider. Mr. Russell gives the reader a systematic program for suppling and strengthening the horse. Throughout, emphasis is placed on teaching the horse to balance himself effectively. I have successfully applied techniques found in this book and am certain, when followed faithfully, Mark Russell's methods will produce a relaxed horse with supple gaits, light to the aids and happy in his work. Note: Some reviews have listed this book as written by Bettina Drummond. The authorship is correctly "Mark Russell with Andrea W. Steele", Ms. Drummond supplies the Foreward.

Some interesting variations on Stack N' Whack.......2003-04-21
If you are just getting into Stack and Whack, get Karen's first book. If you really love it and want more ideas, this book will inspire you. It's such fun to see what Karen makes using today's large scale prints - she deserves a quilter's hall of fame award for inspiring many to play with prints! The mirror-image variations in this book are interesting, but I've had a hard time finding fabrics that are appropriate for them (the color saturation on the back needs to be almost as rich as the front for these to be effective since you are using both sides).
Great book!.......2002-12-25
I decided to tackle a stack-n-whack for my second quilt and loved this book! The beginning couple of pages did a great job of explaining the basic process. I found that cutting out the pieces was the hardest part and once that was done, the blocks went together so quickly. I can't wait to make the same quilt again in different fabrics and compare the two results! The illusions in this book are also so amazing that it makes my quilts seem so much more professional because the design appears so complicated to a novice quilter!

The projects in this book are very well documented as to
how to pick out fabric and how to cut it to get the
dramatic effects for these projects. Very clear directions
with lots of pictures to guide you in assembly. You must
have a basic quilting knowledge and be willing to put in
the extra time to turn out these quality projects.
A beautiful book for someone who wants beautiful projects
that are a little more challenging.

Climbers Galore.......2000-05-01
A beautifully photographed subject, the text provides outstanding detail on different plant varieties in addition to general information on climbers--growing them and sustaining them. The book is organized by types of climbers and I will say it expanded my thinking about climbers and their uses. An excellent three pages on care and cultivation, with pruning diagrams. Those might just be worth the price of the book itself. The downside is that it is not area specific and I wonder which of those in the book are either available or suitable for southern California.
Book Description
More than a meditation book, Quiet Mind is a series of reflections that can illuminate every aspect of life. It offers readers guidance on using the moments between activities which the author calls "stillpoints" as opportunities to focus on becoming more fully awake to who they are. "These times are the `spaces in between' the events of your life," writes Kundtz, "spaces often lost, or worse filled with anxiety. And these spaces in between are just waiting to bring you the calmness and clarity that an over-demanding schedule steals from you." A welcome respite for anyone whose gear shift is perpetually in overdrive, Quiet Mind is an invitation to rest, find peace, awaken, and remember. It offers deceptively simple wisdom to help readers sharpen their senses and make room for life.
Customer Reviews:
Quiet Mind: Worth the Time!.......2007-02-08
Quiet Mind is such a thought provoking book. It points out issues that, in our ridiculously busy lives, we forget to even think about. Kundtz challenges the reader to be introspective and to take the time to notice, consider, be, and most importantly, look inward to determine what is really important in our lives.
The quick, two-page bursts of thought are perfect. They really are one-minute retreats.
One criticism, though, is that there are some editing problems. Being a grammar instructor and freelance proofreader, I can't help but find these things where they exist. It's the curse on my life.
Smell the roses..........2007-02-06
This is a great little book that reminds us to stop and breathe to clear the mind. It helps us to manage some peace among our crazy lives. Thanks!
Much-Needed Respite From Overloaded Senses, Cluttered Thoughts, and Hurried Lives.......2005-09-08
"Welcome to a new way to cope with the demands of a too-busy life. Welcome to a way that requires no difficult skills, adds no new burdens, and accommodates all spiritual systems and life-styles. Welcome to all who want to do nothing-more often, more creatively, with joy, and without guilt. Welcome to one-minute retreats that can be yours at any time of the day or night." - From the book
According to author David Kundtz, a mindful posture centered from the quiet state of your being is *crucial* for any undertaking. In fact, he asserts, if we do not take the time to pause with purpose, disappointment and failure awaits us.
In his book Quiet Mind, Kundtz invites us to do nothing-but to "do" it with purpose, meaning, and value. That is, to take time for ourselves, to rest, to find peace, to awaken, to remember, and to find ways to recognize what we may have forgotten, and how not to forget again.
At 370-pages, Quiet Mind: One-Minute Retreats from a Busy World is brimming with dozens of meditations designed to promote thoughtfulness, calm, and quietude. The mini-retreats, one and a half to two pages long, feature a sage quote and Kundtz's wise and gentle commentary. At the end of each, the author offers one-sentence encouragement, inviting readers to observe life and apply the wisdom found in the meditation.
Kundtz has organized these meditations under fourteen general categories, including:
* Making Room for Life
* Creating Opportunities for Serenity
* Defining Your Values
* Finding Peace at Work
* Knowing Thyself
* Awakening to Wonder
* Giving Back to the World
Under the category Finding Peace at Work, for example, is a meditation about Weariness. Beginning with a quote from Eric Hoff saying, "Our greatest weariness comes from work not done", Kundtz observes:
"...what tires us most is not work, but the anticipation of work still to do. Here is a time when living in the present moment is vital. The past is gone, the future is a just a concept and a projection of our minds. All you have is now. It's all you need..."
In the section Making Room for Life, a meditation called What's Going on Here begins with a quote by George Wilson: "Things are seldom about what they seem to be about." Kundtz notes that all too often we narrowly focus on accomplishing a particular task that we overlook the obvious cause of pain and distress in those around us. He relates the story of a frustrated mother bringing her son to him for counseling. The boy refused to go to school, and neither the son nor the mother was very communicative as to possible causes. Kundtz couldn't figure out what was at the heart of the problem! When he suggested they come back next week the mother replied that they could not come back next week because they were moving across the country. Aha! At last, a window into the boy's world: he was grieving the loss of his friends and all things familiar.
Quiet Mind by David Kundtz is a delightful book, providing a much-needed respite from overloaded senses, cluttered thoughts, and hurried lives.
Spiritual Practice for Busy People.......2004-02-14
This book is a miracle of mindfulness! In short segments that can be read in less than 10 minutes, Kundtz manages to distill the philospohy of Christian, Buddhist, and other religous traditions in a way that is refreshingly non-sectarian. The exercises that conclude each segment can easily be remembered and conducted throught the day and, taken together, form a transformational course in mindfulness for the everday person. My only complaint about the book is that I wish it weighed less, so it could more easily be tossed into a briefcase or purse.
