This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in orca whales. It has mass amounts of great information, it's easy to read, there are great photographs, and the ID catalogue of orcas is nothing but the best. This book is a must have for any whale-lover, researcher, or someone with just a general interest.
Orca Researcher's Bible.......2002-03-28
May I first say I have never encountered a better identification book then Killer Whales and Transients. Both books are written by THE wild orca authority in the Pacific Northwest. Catalouged pictures and organized information of each individual in every pod along the coast from WA to northern BC along with accurate info on feeding, behavioral and other habits of the pods in Puget Sound and British Columbia. Truly a great book, and as I plan on researching these animals in my adulthood, it has been a great boost to my knowledge on them.
Wonderful refrenece book.......2001-08-27
I just returned from a kayaking trip in the Johnston Straight just East of North Vancouver Island known as the inside passage. We had first hand views of the Orcas. This book was used as a reference manual to identify some of the whales. It has wonderful reference pictures of the known pods (families) in the area. It goes into great detail on their eating habits, language, and family history. It also explains their social behavior, and the differences between the pods. It is a wonderful book full of pictures, and details.

This book, the second edition for Ellis, Balcomb and Ford, is a beautiful book for anyone interested in whales, their habitat and their behaviour. Focusing on the Orcas of the Pacific Northwest, this book details their lives from what they eat, to their social habits. It includes a wonderful photo chart of all the Northwest Orcas still alive when this book was published. It is a bit heavy reading, with many complex scientific terms. I would not reccommend for children, but if you know anyone with a facination with whales, this book will it into an obsession.

This book is exceptionally written. It captures the essence of the flies that have been gathered from guides and fly shops from all across America. The photograhy brings out the abilities of the fly tyers that were fortunate enough to be included in the book, as well as the inclusion of the recipes for the fly patterns.
This book is highly recomended for both the novice and professional fly tyer.

Won't ease the mind about shark attacks.......2001-09-05
With the recent shark attacks on the East Coast, children may be afraid to go intot he water. This book does not ease the mind. It does try to give some statistics showing that shark attacks are unlikely but the up-close color photographs of teeth-bearing sharks do little. This book may actually give kids more to worry about: "You will more likely die of an illness, being in a car accident, drowning, eating food with harmful germs, or being shot [than get attacked by a shark.]"

I loved this book! From using the most extravagent yarn to knit items she didn't even want to the brutal honesty in her own shortcomings to the way her abusive father managed to finally make peace with all his children before his death, the serenity that comes from reading this book, the joy and beauty is breathtaking.
She also mentions her recovery from addiction, and this book really is the embodiment of the "Serenity Prayer" - "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"

Lydon's second book tying together threads of life and craft is as beautiful as the first. She takes you by the hand to skip through delicate pathways into the heart. She recalls the calm of summer days exploring new territory with old friends, the tenderness expressed between people whose bonds have been at times taught, loose and sometimes tensioned just right. She coaxes into bloom descriptions of several people whose lives were hanging in the balance as she wrote. I can't think of a more fitting or beautiful tribute to those loved, including ones self. The metaphorical knitting strands here allow a tracery of these intricate connections and her sensuous descriptions of yarn and technique flow beautifully along with her depictions of people and relationships. Read this.

I got to about chapter 3 in this book and thought it was completely awful. She tells you how to knit with the only yarn that is the best. She doesn't say like every other knitter in the world I know how you knit and what you knit with is what is great for you. No she says only knit with this way and its the only right way to knit. She is a yarn snob also. I couldn't stand her condisending attitude in the book. I am glad I didn't read further because if she thinks its ok to just meditate and go back to your problem boyfriend and try to "fix" him then she would have made me so mad I would have just thrown the book. Its too bad because I really wanted to like it.

I read the whole thing, but I really didn't enjoy it. It was more about the traumas in the author's life than about how knitting helped heal her heart. Relatively little real knitting content, more psychological introspection. And needlepoint. I'm sorry that she passed away from the cancer she wrote about in this book, but that still doesn't make it a very uplifting read.
Knitting Inspiration.......2006-09-29
What a wonderful book. Ms. Lydon wove memoir and craft into a fascinating and inspirational read.
Her book spurred me to try lace knitting. I'm knitting my first lace garment right now: The bird's nest shawl from Folk Shawls, a book to which Ms. Lydon often refers. I'm knitting it in a tangerine cotton yarn for my grandmother, who lives in south Texas.
About 10 pages from the end of the book, I couldn't stand it anymore and went online to see if I could find her email address and write to her about her wonderful book. I found her obituary instead. Rest in peace, Susan.

Low Fat Diet Not for Everyone.......2005-08-27
15% of the population could be harmed by low-fat diets and unless you like playing Russian roulette with your life, you should find out if you're one of them (it requires a specific type of cholesterol test). This book is backed up by scientific studies and goes into relevant details of different types of cholesterol particles. It does take some effort to extract the infomation that is spread throughout the book but it is well within reach of most readers and well worth the effort.
I've read a number of books on preventing heart disease and this one is reccomended because it gives extremely important information you will not find in magazine articles, brochures, or other books. It goes into excellent detail on diet and exercise. The only reason why I think these facts aren't better known is that the extra complexity would confuse some people and cause a few to not to adopt low fat diets which is beneficial to most people.
The first book to tell the lipoprotein story.......2004-09-05
Despite the broad awareness of cholesterol issues in the U.S., heart disease is rampant. A good part of the reason is that many people have causes for heart disease beyond cholesterol. Dr. Yannios has written the first book for the public that makes the complex issue of lipoprotein testing understandable for the average person. Lipoprotein testing fills in the huge gaps left by cholesterol, identifying risk for heart disease even in people with low or normal cholesterols. Dr Yannios talks about how shockingly often people who've suffered heart attacks (an often fatal event!) are told by their doctors that no cause can be identified, or that the causes are genetic and therefore untreatable. Absolute nonsense! Dr. Yannios tells us why.
No fluff in this book........2003-09-18
Just intensely interesting and highly informative material that is presented perfectly. This information will motivate you to make the changes in your life necessary for good health - and not through "scare tactics".
It's difficult for me to comprehend how anyone who reads this book can come away with a negative opinion that results in a bad review.
I only wish that I had come into possession of this knowledge at an earlier date.
Some good stuff, some risky advice.......2003-04-26
It is encouraging that Dr. Yannios rejects many of the conventional (and incorrect) approaches to heart disease prevention. There have been no studies that conclusively link high blood cholesterol, high dietary cholesterol, high dietary fat, or high blood triglycerides to heart disease. (For more on this, see Dr. Uffe Ravnskov's excellent book "The Cholesterol Myths.") I was pleased particularly pleased to see him mention that many people who have heart disease have normal cholesterol. In fact, nearly half of the patients in the Framingham heart study who died of coronary disease had blood cholesterol under 220!
I am, however, concerned that Dr. Yannios seems to be so concerned with atherosclerosis as a cause of heart disease. As Dr. Ravnsknov's book shows, there is no evidence that atherosclerosis causes heart disease, nor is there any evidence that high blood cholesterol causes atherosclerosis. And without that evidence, it is plainly risky to treat otherwise healthy patients with expensive cholesterol-lowering drugs that may have serious short- and long-term side effects, simply because they have preatherosclerotic streaks in their arteries. Even fetuses have such streaks. Should we give newborns cholesterol lowering drugs? If so, I am going to go sink all my money into pharmaceutical stocks.
I say, read this book, but read it skeptically. Do not go out and ask your doctor to prescribe cholesterol lowering drugs for you, especially if your cholesterol is normal. Go to a good library and read the journal articles on cholesterol and heart disease yourself, including the numbers. (Summaries can and do lie!) Read the clinical trials of cholesterol lowering drugs to discover the side effects of these drugs, and ask yourself whether, if you are currently healthy, you want to live a life riddled with those side effects in the name of your "health." Read a book on statistics so you'll understand what is and is not statitistically significant. And read "The Cholesterol Myths."
Have an MI, then BUY THIS BOOK.......2001-09-08
I had an MI at the age of 36 (ouch). Since then I've tried to keep up to date on all the real, important research about heart disease causes and prevention. Trust me, you don't want to have a *second* MI.
This book takes all the important stuff you need to know and gives it to you in a form you can understand. Better than that, you can take *action*. Action that is tailored to *YOU*.
Both my GP and my Cardiologist knew less about all the risk factors than I did. We did the super-low-fat diet thing and they wanted to treat my lipids with *only* statins. This book has helped me educate them and given me what I need to advocate for myself. I'm know doing everything I can for my *specific* risk factors.
My diet is now low in carbohydrate. My doctors, of course had put me on an ultra-low-fat diet, which, for me (and for 25% of the U.S. population), was *exactly the wrong thing*. When I went on a high-protein, low carb, moderate fat diet my lipids ***greatly*** improved (oh yah and I lost 30 pounds).
Given my lipids, I know now that Niacin *and* statins are the right choice for my profile (I had an LDL-GGE test recommended in the book).
Hey I just had a thought...maybe *you* should buy this book *before* you have an MI...
