Product Description
This book offers practical suggestions and advice for how to teach and learn those subtle messages that most people seem to pick up almost automatically but that have to be directly taught to individuals with social-cognitive challenges. Given the serious consequences that can befall a person who violates a social rule, the strategies and detailed lists of curriculum items make The Hidden Curriculum a much-needed resource.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference but scant on practical strategies.......2007-07-25
I purchased this book a year ago and it sat on my shelf until today. I dusted it off because I am developing a community-based social skills coaching program for an adolescent with high-functioning Autism. I recalled that the book had a nice list of the hidden curriculum for a variety of social situations (e.g. eating at a restauant, telephone skills, rules for dating, reading body language). There were a few in there that I never would have thought of. This was helpful as a jumping off point for making goals and developing a concise script for the sessions.
There is a section in the book on the strategies to teach the hidden curriculum, but it is limited in content. There is a brief description of a technique, examples of worksheets one could use, but there are no blank reproducible materials of the worksheets they used as examples.
I would recommend this book for those just starting out in the field and teachers or parents who want to know what words to use to explain to their child the "unwritten social rules."
By the way, I would also recommend that you "do not talk about how mucus looks or feels in the throat or looks in your tissue." :)
Totally Unhelpful!.......2006-04-02
I bought this book because a reviewer said it would teach people with Asperger's syndrome how to make and manintain eye contact. It doesn't. It just says you should make and maintain eye contact, it doesn't teach you how. This book only tells you what society expects of you, so if you already know what society expects of you, but just cannot figure out how to do it smoothly, don't buy this book. If you already know stuff like, "pull up your pants before coming out of the bathroom", don't buy this book.
Great Resource for Social Skills.......2006-02-19
This book is a must have for anyone whose life is touched by someone with autism. Myles teaches her readers that teaching social skills is not an insurmountable task. It just requires a conscious effort by all.
Finally! A simple solution!.......2005-04-24
One of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!
Bridging the Gap & Crossing into Neuro-neutral Grounds.......2004-12-24
This is another book that people on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum have been praying for! This sterling work helps decode and identify tacit Social Codes & Rules. For many people on the a/A spectrum, learning these nonverbal subtleties is a major challenge. a/A related conditions are neurobiological and affect sensory processing and integration as well as communication. People on the a/A spectrum encounter a wide range of social difficulties, many of which are addressed in this book.
This work gives good advice on how to make and maintain eye contact; how to position oneself when talking to and listening to another; how to appear natural in practicing these skills. This book also gives a good explanation of how to "read" people socially and how to learn to anticipate possible seeming changes in the Tacit Social Codes & Rules. People with neurotypical (NT) brains already know these Rules and NT readers also can benefit from this book by seeing what people on the a/A spectrum contend with. Rather, people on the a/A spectrum learn these behaviors cognitively as this is not intuitive knowledge among the a/A population. Once the Rules are learned, the next step is understanding when and how and to apply them.
Make a place for this book. It is every a/A navigator's best friend when it comes to improving social skills and interpreting human behavior. It is a bridge from the a/A population to the NT population and moves all, a/A and NT readers alike onto neuro-neutral ground. The information found in this book makes communicating in the NT world so much easier and so much more logical!

Customer Reviews:
Nicely done!.......2007-01-13
Very good book to help with setting together those blocks you get that are not all the same size. Nice photos too. After reading it I actually decided to participate in guild swaps again and formed my own mini bee to do swaps.
I've haven't used this book yet.......2006-10-23
I've had this book for a couple of years now and recently looked at it again. The layouts that are suggested are mostly set on-point and she has some good ideas, I suppose, but I haven't had the need to use any of the information. Hopefully I will in the future.
A must for anyone with ufos or orphan blocks!.......2001-08-11
Finally a good quilt book that tells you how to fix or set blocks! There are no patterns in this book, but who needs another pattern book. This book helps you clean up all those blocks just setting around.
Blueprints for success in creating block quilts.......2001-07-06
Sharyn Craig's Setting Solutions provides blueprints for success in creating block quilts which are easy and which solve common block problems in size and color. New techniques for grouping blocks are included.
Still the best.......2001-05-27
If you make quilt blocks, you want to own this book. Sharon will show you how to create your own quilts with blocks that are not matched in size or color and the results will be better than you would ever expect. As I read through, marveling at her creativity, I kept wondering why she had such an endless supply of mismatched blocks of the month. She does it on purpose! She likes the challenge of starting with something and making it better, rather than making her own orderly and boring quilt from scratch.
There is no way to overstate how much you will get out of this book. Another recent book by Margaret Miller dealt with the same subject but her solutions were so much work that I doubt I would ever use them. This book contains easy, approachable solutions to problems all of us have faced. If you make blocks, you will want to have it in your library for endless inspiration.

Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover..........2001-06-23
Anyone that loves and appreciates the quality of the best needlework of the Victorian era will be beautifully inspired by this gorgeous book that provides what its cover promises, the photography alone is good reason for its purchase. To turn each page is a pleasure, as gorgeous lace samples are used to frame the pages that are filled with delicate items to tickle the fancy of any romantic. To then have the addition of a printed sample included so that you can immediately try the techniques shown, is an added bonus.
We see many lovely books filled with dreamy images of Victorian treasures that are far beyond our reach financially, but this book puts those items within our grasp by using the hand skills we have developed over the years. It is a commercial venture, of course, and promoting a particular brand of an embroidery machine since this is what the author uses and is familiar with. I was so inspired by the images that I immediately started searching for a location where I could see this machine. When I saw the price range of them, I immediately realized that the machines are currently out of my price range, fortunately, these techniques do not necessarily require an expensive machine at all if you are an accomplished hand-stitcher that admires quality and uses quality materials.
Jenny Haskins is a very creative designer who is generous about sharing her talents with complete patterns and detailed instructions. I just purchased her next book, "Victorian Roses" which is just as beautifully presented. I highly recommend "Victorian Pansies" if to just inspire and offer the opportunity of allowing the book to lay open to view at almost any page which greatly contribute to the romatic look we desire in our homes and immerse us anew in the homely beauty of the old-fashioned pansy.
Victorian Pansies by Jenny Haskins.......2001-02-10
For those of you who appreciate the Victorian style and own a home embroidery machine this is the book for you. The author gives several examples of what you can create with machine embroidery. In case you don't have an embroidery machine, you are not out of luck. Almost all of the projects can be constructed with a regular sewing machine, and some require no sewing at all. The machine embroidery merely enhances the item. She uses motifs from embroidery designs that she created (you can purchase the embroidery design disks), and gives you new and creative ideas on how to use them. The book comes with patterns that correspond to the written instructions. She also gives instructions in both in the front and the back of the book that has photographs and drawings. However, in some of her written instructions she doesn't include a description of the stitch being sewn (i.e. satin stitch with 2.5 width), she merely gives the number of the stitch on HER computerized sewing machine (i.e. stitch No. 60, width and length 6.0). By the way, she uses a Pfaff embroidery/sewing machine. Therefore, the book is not entirely universal when it comes to different brand sewing machines. However, you can look at the picture and match the stitch with your machine. The materials she uses ARE available in the U.S. (author is from Australia) or from her website. There is a listing of suppliers in the back of the book as well.
Victorian Pansies.......2000-10-10
A beautifully photographed book, more of a picture book than a 'how to'. I found that it was overly long in the project explanations pages, and sometimes they seemed too complicated to read right through. There are about 20 projects, nicely illustrated and all using the embroidery features found on the latest computerized machines, and the author's Pansy disc. Some supplies are hard to find in this country and no substitutes given for US readers. The book is written by an Australian artist. Overall I would say this is a pretty book for one's collection and an asset if one is charmed by the lovely flower, the Pansy.

Customer Reviews:
Half perfect.......2007-07-02
I have to start with the Perfect Part; I love this book for it's indispensable qualities. There is not a better book out there that covers more and offers more insight into so many essences as Mr Sharpiro's book. I refer to it every day and it is dog eared and cross referenced and page marked; hence the SECOND part of the review, the IMPERFECT part. Such a WASTE of reference here since there is no cross reference or list of essences, even if only in an index form, so that one can at least go back after one's initial discovery work (I.E. looking up a condition to resolve), and take the list of essences possible and then cross check them, find thier suggested uses better and faster and AT ALL. See overlaps, double uses, etc etc. quicker and without having to only have the symptoms to start with. I have purchased so many more obscure essences based on the suggestions in this book, only to find then , I while I do compile large volumes of essence information from thier makers, and I do use them for remedies for what this volume suggests them for, there remains no easy look up if I were to want to re-visit the initial use or purpose for buying any one bottle. It would be so helpful, just from a practical point of view to have at lEAST included an index. This would have saved many post-its, folded page corners and piles of notes in no particular order to re examine. It would help me make use of so many essences I have on hand, also, I am sure. This is not a happy review to write since I wnat to emphasize how terrific this volume is in what it achieves and I am so grateful for it. I wish a couple other lines of essences were also included, but Mr Shapiro can't be slighted for that, but mostly I am hoping Mr Shapiro reads this and creates an index of essences at least to his second printing of this book. I will buy it immediately. It would make combination remedies simpler and less time consuming to create as well. There is one FANTASTIC part to this book; the end where actual physical symptoms and conditions are listed with remedies and I have had such great success with every one or combination I have tried, it is amazing, and leaves me wanting MORE of this genre of suggested uses for essences. I am a believer in the intuitive side of essences selection, and have seen that work wonders even alone, but a volume such as this, so full of information, is also invaluable to open and use as a spring board to using flower essences for real healing.
Wonderful book, but should be used in conjunction with.......2005-01-18
another book of choice that goes into the descriptions of the indivudal flower essences. This book covers the essences of the wellknown makers, but does not go into any depth, at all, of the descriptions. It's very comprehensive and easy to understand as far as the repertory and ruberics go....
great materia medica.......2002-11-03
I like this book a lot. it is a great materia medica for flower essences! I could have given it five stars for the materia medica, but I would have loved to have a part in the book where the remedies also were listed per se, but he do give guidelines for where you can find this. But i do recommend this book for everyone seriously working with or interested in floweressences, really great work!
A really good source book!!!.......2001-05-05
This is a good book for quick references. It's good to have some practicality and clarity with essences so "everyone" can have the opportunity to use the them. If the essences are kept too confusing and too mystical then people will not want to even try the essences. If they would happen to need them, then that would be sad if it was too confusing for them to use. One thing I wish is that the author had included the list of essences with some descriptions of them, separate from the other listings. The listings that are in the book are by symptoms. Then the essences that are needed for that symptom are underneath. The essence is then described there. It's a very handy and understandable book!!
Another perspective.......2001-03-12
From my personal perspective, I did not find this book helpful. Possibly this was because, as one reviewer put it, it tries to take the mystery out of flower essences. Think about it - the workings of the essences are a mystery, even though the community is learning a lot about the situations in which a particular essence is most suited. I believe that it is a mistake to treat them as though they were drugs in the PDR, which I feel is the overall message of this book: find a sympton; prescribe an essence; Voila! An essence is a gift from the plant to the animal/human world and needs to be respected as such.
