Kate Petty, Horse Heroes: The Stories of Amazing Horses (Dorling Kindersley, 1999)
Horse Heroes is another forty-eight page kids' reader about horses. Yes, I seem to be reading a lot of those lately. This one's kind of fun. Petty presents us with four to five page stories on a number of different horses, of disparate breeds and achievements, and makes them interesting and fun to read about. Definitely worthwhile for the horse-loving kid in your life. *** ½

I just read a great book called Horse Heroes by Kate Petty. I liked it because the stories were true and exciting and the pictures in the book were really neat. I think that young kids who like horses would like this book.

Better than average biography.......2004-11-01
As a 6th grade teacher in a multicultural classroom, I am always searching for good multicultural literature for my students. This book is excellent because it covers some African-American leaders about whom we read or hear very little (Richard Allen and Fannie Lou Hamer). The reason I only rate it as better than average is because the biographies discuss only the positive in these peoples' characters and personalities -- never anything negative. My students need to see real people...not superhumans who never make mistakes!

This is a wonderful book for anyone dreaming of restoring a Victorian home. Lots of pictures but also well researched and interesting text. Helpful for those of us who do not want to model "mimic" our rooms after a specific photo spread in a book, but would like to understand, incorporate, and enjoy the historic details of our beautiful homes.

Although interesting for the idle reader, this book is a valuable resource for those writing in the period setting, with its detailed descriptions and illustrations of items considered mundane in this era but no longer in use today. Also a priceless resource for the reenactment community.

We live in a world where we have the potential for unprecedented progress, limitless opportunities for inclusion and mutual respect, and challenging possibilities for respectful dialog to solve the thorny issues that divide us. However, in reality we live in a rude world where we seek personal advantage and the domination of our particular political agenda at the expense of what is best for the whole of society. We seek to maintain our advantage in order to "win", at the expense of others who of necessity must "lose". We seem to have lost the art of cooperation in order to solve our mutual problems.
How are responsible parents to raise respectful kids in such a rude world that has become our 21st century reality. How are these kids to grow up and, as adults, make a difference in this world? How are they to learn quiet compassion for others, rather than becoming part of the domination system or spending their lives fighting the domination system.
