Great Book.......2002-08-21
This is a great book but I think more explanation could have gone into it. Unless you have already been decorating cakes and can make the logical assumptions, some things are left unexplained. Other than that, I think this is an awesome book along with all his other books. Nicholas Lodge is the Bill Gates of Cake Decorating.
A 'must-have' for all sugarcraft beginners!.......2000-05-01
This book is beautifully illustrated with step-by-step instructions. It covers all the basic essentials of sugarcrafting, including the baking of the cakes, piping techniques, modelling and simple decorations.
I found this book extremely useful and easy to follow. It has also given me the knowledge and inspiration to pursue my skills further. I highly recommend this book to all those who are thinking of taking up the art of sugarcraft.

One of my favourite parenting books!.......2004-11-26
This is one of my favourite parenting books, along with other books by the same authors. What I really like about it is that the book focuses on prevention and on how to raise children, not just what to do when there are problems. I highly recommend this book!
A wonderful book for parents of pre-schoolers........1999-09-15
This book has truely helped me understand my two year old. I have learned to appreciate the simple joys he finds in his life, and I have learned to let him enjoy them. I read this book last week and have since put these principles into action. I have noticed a significant difference in everyone's attitudes.

It's easy to get stuck in an unpleasant parenting rut--daily frustrations have a way of building walls between kids and parents that lead to ineffective communication and further frustrations. Sometimes an objective step back and a fresh set of reminders are just the ticket to get family life back on track.
A welcome combination of theory and practical suggestions, The Encouraging Parent first presents a general overview of typical parenting systems of punishment and reward. Examples like "If you make straight A's, I'll give you fifty dollars" and "You will sit here all night if it takes that long" may be embarrassingly familiar to some readers, but not to worry; author Rod Kennedy promises that he is out to break the cycle of blame for all involved.
He proceeds to do just that by showing surprisingly simple suggestions for discipline that is effective and loving at the same time. Practical ideas are listed with bullet points, followed by short explanations, a definite boon for busy parents who find their reading time to be limited. Lists cover topics like "verbal bombs to avoid," "nine characteristics of the emotionally mature parent," and personal traits of responsible people. Lots of real-life stories are included from the author's personal experiences, and these stories serve nicely to illustrate the 14 different communication skills Kennedy feels are necessary for good parenting. One short tale of his wife's bad day that is greeted with "start from the beginning and tell me everything," instead of "you think you had a bad day," is an easy lesson that can make a world of difference in an exhausted family. If you're ready to make a few positive changes at home, The Encouraging Parent is an excellent place to start. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Would you like to end temper tantrums, sibling rivalry, and other unacceptable behavior without resorting to threats, shouting, or spanking?
Let Dr. Rod Kennedy show you how to become an Encouraging Parent.
Remember that time when you were down on your knees, holding out your arms, and shouting out encouragement as your toddler took those first steps? When your child stumbled and fell, you didn't shout, spank, or reprimand -- you smiled, soothed, encouraged. You motivated your child to succeed. You can recapture that positive and effective attitude and harness it to raise a confident, self-disciplined, and happy child. The first step is to realize that the problem isn't how to "fix" your child, it's to understand how your own attitudes and beliefs get in the way of effective parenting, then learn how to fine-tune your emotional and communication skills.
Based on his popular workshops, which have trained more than 100,000 parents, Dr. Kennedy's book contains a wealth of practical information on how to teach kids self-discipline. Topics include:
¸ A self-test to help pinpoint where you need to refine your parenting skills
¸ Establishing daily routines that are easy to remember-- and that will end the chaos
¸ Teaching kids to get along and resolve their own conflicts so you don't have to micromanage
¸ Real-life parenting lessons from the parents who attend Dr. Kennedy's workshops
This warm, empathetic, and practical guide will help you nurture your child's positive development and create the loving, supportive atmosphere all kids need to thrive.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Kennedy's methods really work!.......2004-02-07
I was fortunate enough to hear Dr. Kennedy speak at my church and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only were his ideas practical and down-to-earth, but the goal is to raise joyful and self-disciplined children. The techniques worked very well with my two children and allowed for their very different temperments. I have read many parenting books and I would list this one among the best.
After attending the seminar, I read the book. It provided an easy-to-read format with lots of bullet items listing the key points. This is valuable when you need to go back and quickly find some advice for a particular situation. I also found it very helpful that Dr. Kennedy readily (and hysterically) admits some of the mistakes that he has made when raising his 5 children. He is very accessible in person as well as through his writing.
If you are looking for a book that will result in a more peaceful home and more joyful time with your family, read this book! You and your children will benefit from this Biblically-grounded method of raising our children in a loving environment that still manages to provide boundaries and self-disciplined children. It worked in our home! Thanks Dr. Kennedy.
Just plain Awful !! (Not to mention a sleeper of a book).......2004-01-29
I read a review of the book (which said how great this book was) on another website.
Talk about awful! This is book is definitely NOT a hands on book. It's wordy and the bottom line is, this author thinks we need to be "more emotionally mature" as parents, and to let our children rule the roost. Here are a few cheesy parts...p.197, "I will keep the toy until the two of you arrive at a plan for sharing." OH PLEASE! Can you just picture the look on your 3 and 7 year old faces? Then, on page 218, a rule for your kids "Ask permission to change the television channel." SURE...like that is going to happen. If you can stay awake thru the fluffy talk then buy this book. I found it a bore!
Super Fantastic Seminar.......2002-03-04
Rod Kennedy had over 100 of us rolling in the aisles with his very helpful hints in raising children. Anyone who has a chance to see how this father of 5 copes should give his books and seminar a "go!"...I loved what he taught me and my kids are doing better already. God bless him!
This book comes with the seminar and it is great.
Aspiring to Be Encouraging.......2001-11-01
I found the book refreshing and inspiring. I think that parents often fall into the trap of being controllers and forget how to encourage the children to think for themselves, confident in the never-ending love of God. While there are some concepts I may see slightly differently than Mr.Kennedy, I found the book helpful in my role as a parent of four and as an educator of parents.
Don't buy if you are conservative!.......2001-05-18
Mr. Kennedy was in town for a seminar on being an encouraging parent. I was unable to attend, and bought the book instead. I'm glad now that I didn't waste my time attending. I didn't even make it through half of the book, before I refused to read anymore. Mr. Kennedy is very liberal and would have us believe that we should never lay a finger on our children because it would break their spirit. It surprised me that as a preacher he quoted Bible verses, but put most of us down for our "incorrect" interpretations. After I got over being mad all through chapter 1 of Mr. Kennedy's accusation that parents who spank are "barbarians", I continued reading thinking he still probably had some good ideas on parenting. Then I hit chapter 5. I had to stop reading after that. I'm sorry, maybe it's just being from the Bible belt, but Mr. Kennedy not only told us to be tolerant of all people's differences (which I do agree with), but quoted the bible in support of homosexuality. That is where I draw the line.

Customer Reviews:
I maintain that this book can definitely help to pave the way for all readers in the quest for learning!.......2006-10-12
I own both the paper-pack & hard-pack versions of this wonderful book. I was introduced to it by my PhotoReading instructor/co-developer, Patricia Danielson from New England, MA, during the early nineties. It is pertinent to mention that 'The Everyday Genius' is synonymous with PhotoReading, as far as the ultimate application is concerned. In fact, Peter Kline has contributed quite substantially to the early development of PhotoReading, according to the principal developer of the technology, Paul Scheele.
From my personal perspective, the principal theme is nurturing learners in the world. As such, it has great relevancy to parents (the primary audience) as well as to teachers & employers/bosses/managers in the workplace.
The author, a true learner himself, has an amazing gamut of practical ideas for developing & nurturing learners at home & in the workplace.
During the years I have owned a small bookstore from the early nineties up to mid-2004, this book happens to be one of my anchor books. I often recommend it to visiting parents to my store as well as to managers/bosses who are responsible for many people working under them. The feedback from them has always been tremendously positive. Many have returned to buy further copies to be given away as gifts.
There is an everyday genius in all of us. Sometimes, we need to rub the Aladdin lamp rigourously to get the genie out. This book, packed with insights, games, activities & exercises, can serve that purpose.
Yes, I must add that the book can be intellectually quite intense for some people to read. Neverthelesss, I strongly recommend reading it.
Let me conclude this review by recapitulating an observation made by John Naisbitt, a futurist/thought leader, many years ago, "In a world that is constantly changing, there is no one subject, or set of subjects, that can serve us for the foreseeable future, let alone for the rest of our lives. The most important thing for us is to learn, unlearn & relearn." I maintain that this book can definitely help to pave the way for all readers in the quest for learning.
[To Parents/Teachers who want more specific tools & strategies to help their kids/students in attaining school success, please get hold of the author's 'School Success: An Inside Story'. To Managers/Professionals, please get hold of the author's 'Ten Steps to a Learning Organisation.' These are excellent & insightful productions!
Huge waste of time.......2004-06-26
What an absolutely dreadful, boring, useless book. I bought it based on the reviews above, and boy am I mad that I did. As a teacher, I thought I would take away something, anything, from this book. Instead, my mind is slightly more numb because of it. This author says the same thing 800 different times in only slightly different ways. He could have pared the whole thing down to one inspiring quote. Instead, his repetitive rambling takes all inspiration out of his words. Truly, I love any book that inspires me or gives me ideas for working with children, but this book was AWFUL. The author also spends a lot of time tooting his own horn. I tend to roll my eyes when he does, because he makes ridiculous claims like, "I spoke with this child for ten minutes and he went from a high-school dropout to a brilliant doctor." I made that up, but that's the gist. He's full of it. Save yourself time & money and leave this book alone.
Great for Adults!.......2001-07-24
I sometimes forget to slow my life down enough to pay attention to the lessons that children can teach me about how to live my life. Every child that is born into this world is a laughing, singing, creative and powerful individual. Often it seems that by the time we reach adulthood we have lost the ability to laugh and sing. Peter Kline seriously addresses the process of learning from all angles. Extremely instructive to adults!!!
Some favorite passages:
"Creativity is a function of our whole personality and its interaction with the world, not something we turn on or off. The more we see ourselves as innovative and original thinkers, the more creative we tend to be"..."So whatever else we may say about creativity, these three things are essential to it: we must value our uniqueness, we must trust the worth of our experience, and we must be able to draw freely and widely on the full range of that experience, which is the content of our memory." P 190
"Experiencing disharmony between what we say and what we feel leads to a vague sense of anxiety and not being at home in the world - a sense that some philosophers assume is an inescapable part of the human condition. However, the origin of this anxiety is not human nature, it is in our withholding or even becoming unaware of what we really feel - in failing to live our lives fully. Accepting emotions helps us get beneath the surface in order to discover the rich and wonderful process of being." P 219
"Whenever you feel you are learning nothing from the person you are with, or the situation you are in, it is time to return again to whatever springs inspire in you the development of new learning skills, and drink as deeply as you can. Then you will be better able to discover that each person you meet has a fund of experinece so rich that no matter what thier differences in worldly accomplishments may be from yours, you can learn from them and they from you. Some of my own finest learning experiences have come from those who had lived long lives without the advantage of education or even literacy. Experience of any kind is always richly and uniquely instructive." P 252
Everyday Genius.......2001-04-21
As a student, I was assigned this reading. I found the latter half of the book to be the most useful. However, I thought that the first eleven chapters could have been revised to approximately three chapters. The most impressive part of this book is Kline's examples of his learning philosophies. These examples include games, activities, and exercises that are applicable in the home and classroom. Overall this read was intelligent and insightful. Kline has some truly amazing ideas.

An invaluable resource for parents, teachers, and librarians--indeed, for any adult eager to share with small children the pleasure books offer.
Customer Reviews:
Babies need OLD, classic, Living books........2005-10-14
This is a wonderful book for many reasons. First, like other wonderful resources of its kind such as "Honey for a Child'd Heart" and "Books Children Love" it talks about the importance and the joy of sharing books with your children, with a special emphasis on the 5 and under set. It inspires and motivates you to spend time sharing books with your small children, something many people might not think is important at all, or at least not until they're old enough to talk or understand the story. But as this book explains, the earlier children are exposed to great literature, the better.
And that is the key - "great literature" - and what makes this book so special. So much of what is being written now-a-days is "Twaddle" and not worth reading to our children. A very large percentage of the thousands of books we've bought for our family's homeschool collection over the years has been older books - usually the older the better. In fact, the copywright date is the first thing I look at when trying to decide if a book is worth buying for my kids. We do have newer books, too, but the older ones are usually our favorites.
Most of the books listed in this guide are what Charlotte Mason calls "Living Books" - stuff to feed the minds, imaginations, and souls of our children. Yes, they may be harder to find, even at the library because sadly, libraries are getting rid of more and more of the good stuff to make room for the highly marketed garbage being passed off as children's literature today. But you can still find some of them through Amazon's used booksellers and other places and they're well worth getting whenever you can. But you have to know WHAT to buy and since they're not widely available this book helps by giving you titles and descriptions to go by.
It was because of some of these "hard to find, older books" that I found THIS book in fact. I stumbled across a book called "Dogger" in a closeout bookstore for $3.00 and as soon as I read it I knew I had found a real treasure. I went back to buy more for gifts but they were sold out so, of course I checked Amazon. I found out that it was out of print and then discovered that the author, Shirley Hughes, had written many, many similar books but that they were mostly out of print, too. I bought a few from Amazon and we found each one to be more delightful than the next, though "Dogger" is still our favorite. So I started searching for any book by Shirley Hughes I could find and I came across this book, because it was illustrated by Shirley Hughes. Being a book-a-holic, especilally on the topic of anything to do with homeschooling, I had to buy it and I found it to be an incredible gem, just like the children's books that led me to it. It inspires and motivates you with why you should read to your baby and how much you'll BOTH enjoy it and describes what makes a good book at each age level and is full of suggestions of wonderful books to look for. It's done in a conversational tone, like a grandmother or old friend and full of anecdotes of real babies and their family members and their experiances with books that make you think "I want that experience for MY baby, too."
Wonderful book - get it while you can before IT'S replaced by more Twaddle!
A Great Guide that Won't Overwhelm You! Her Selections Work.......2004-01-21
Reading "Babies Need Books" is almost like having a conversation with a sage older neighbor or friend. Unlike tomes that list 20 billion books for each age group, this guide
pares down the selections for the 0-6s into brief and chatty chapters that get you excited about reading. It's nice to read a guide that's personal, filled with annecdotes and opinions. But best of all, her picks work! Without fail, every book I've read that Butler reccomends has been a hit with my child.
While it is true that many of the books are on the older side (it would be wonderful if there was a new edition), I have to say, I kind of like that fact that some of the books are off the beaten path. I could find most of them at Amazon or in the library, and their sometimes retro illustrations and antiquated language make them all the more interesting. I think it's good for kids to see different visual styles as well as to hear different types of language use.
Butler is also not afraid to give opinions on what not to read (see her comments on Richard Scary and "educational" books). For these reasons, and others, I give "Babies Need Books" an enthusiastic 5 stars!
The title says it all!.......2001-06-05
A girlfriend sent Babies Need Books to me when my son was already six months old - thankfully we had been reading to him since his birth - but Dorothy Butler's facts, anecdotes and recommendations only served to strengthen our commitment to reading as a family. Now 17 months old, our son routinely brings us books, sits in our lap and waits for us to begin reading. Friends and family members have commented on his behaviour and deemed it exceptional for his age - not according to Dorothy! The reviews that indicate the recommended reading lists are out of date are missing the point in my mind. Yes some of the books are not easy to find, but we have found almost all of them, and the concepts contained therein are the meat of the lists in any event. A must have for people hoping to impart a love of reading to their children.
Babies need books.......2001-01-27
I have to disagree with the reviewer who wrote that this book is "Great on theory; poor research on books", October 26, 1999. Dorothy Butler first became interested in children's literature while teaching English at a secondary school. All the books reviewed in "Babies need books" have been read to her 8 children and then her 17 grandchildren over many many years. Dorothy Butler's selection has nothing to do with theory but years of reading aloud to children. Many of the books reviewed have become classics. Most out of print can be found at a good library. If you love reading to your children this is one book I'd definitely recommend.
Essential for new parents.......2000-08-08
This book is a great firestarter for parents of infants. It shows how important the reading process is and it also points out how easy it is for parents to read to their babies. Dorothy Butler does a wonderful job with this topic and proves herself a knowing expert who can impart information to a group that is often overwhelmed with advice -- new parents.
