The best stained glass pattern book I've seen. Each and every one of the 50+ patterns has a color example for color-challenged beginners like myself. The photography is excellent and many photos are accompanied by light-hearted poetry. If you don't do stained glass, go ahead and get this one for the coffee table.

I bought this book on the referral of a friend and my twins loved it. Its such a sweet story and its definitely not one they will be tired of any time soon. It makes for a great bedtime reader because its about two things that scare kids most: the dark and "monsters" under the bed. Plus, it rhymes and the ilustrations are beautiful, so you can't go wrong.

This is a great story that can be read to your children or by your children. It is about a little frog who overcomes the same childhood fears that every toddler has to overcome: monsters and the dark. The story itself is very sweet and it rhymes its way through the plot like every good fairy tale should. The best review I can give it is this: its the kind of story that I read to my daughters and they quickly ask me to read it again...and again...and again. I hope Mr. Decker has more Sammy tales in store for us.

The problem with this book is that most of the shown arrangements are plainly not beautiful. They don't look balanced as real ikebana should look, containers don't seem suitable for flowers, color combinations are not always harmonious, and in many cases it is not clear why this is called ikebana at all. There are some pieces of useful information such as diagrams, tools, and tips, but I don't think it reasonable to buy the book for those 10 pages (like I did).
There is a really great book on ikebana: "The art of arranging flowers; a complete guide to Japanese ikebana" by Shozo Sato, but it is out of print I am afraid. Decent how to, but lacks explanation of why.......2004-01-26
I got this book to go with Origami Flowers by Hiromi Hayashi. Reiko Takenaka does a good job explaining how to make an arrangement that looks like the pictures, with step by step instructions and clear diagrams. Some of the containers seem to clash with the flowers, and some of the special occasions arrangements are lost in translation for someone not intimately familiar with Japanese culture like me. My only real criticism, however, is that the book does not really explain any principles about why and how and what looks good - it's more a menu to find an arrangement that looks nice in the picture and repeat it.
great book for those who need English explanation of basics.......2001-12-29
This is a clearly written, well thought out explanation of the basics of Ikebana. The photographs demonstrating the combinations of materials, and their height relative to each other, are great as examples for beginners. Many ikebana teachers don't speak English well, so this book is useful for a cross reference for something you were taught in class. One problem - there are many schools of ikebana so the book has to be quite generic in its explanations, which is not necessarily how your particular school may approach a certain principle. But again, as a study supplement to a class, it works well.

Many ikebana books shows a very traditional way of arranging flower. This book, however, shows a simpler and more modern way arrangement with the result of nice and unusual looks of flower arrangement. The step-by-step is helpful and quite detailed. The book shows lots of different variations for cool vases or containers as well.

Visually appealing with its hundreds of bright color photographs and encyclopedic in its scope and content, this reference also has the clarity of organization and practicality of a garden handbook. Each of the listings of the hundreds of Japanese plants gives notes on appearance, cultivation, and use (e. g., ground cover, attractive spring flowers, potted plant) of the particular plant along with the Japanese and English names, interesting points, and related plants. As noted in the Foreword by E. Charles Nelson, the Japanese, with their insular culture, had no desire to go abroad seeking foreign plants--nor did they need to with the variety available in their homeland. Yet American gardeners and others readily took to Japanese plants when Japan opened up to the West, and continue to do so increasingly in recent years. This attractive, complete, useful reference fully satisfies an interest in the variety of Japanese plants. Both authors have extensive backgrounds and solid reputations in horticulture.

Ikebana Expressions is a very inspiring book.The arragements are really creative and plenty of life and joy.It is a delight for the eyes and for the soul. The author presents her own concepts about new contemporany flower arrangements, using a wide array of containers,plants and materials. The beauty of the plant's natural lines is emphasized by combining the container and the floral material. It is shown how to combine the enviroment and the arragement, even for big places and outdoors. I have studied ikebana from a traditional school with rigid rules even for the free style; and the arrangements looked like medieval paintings. Reading this book, you will find inspiration and new ideas in every page.

Premise Your doctor recommends a lab test or diagnostic screening. You don't have a clue what you're in for or why. This is where the book takes over.
High Marks Impressive pedigree. Clear and accessible rundowns of more than 170 lab, home, screening and diagnostic tests (e.g., lipid profile, renal biopsy, scrotal ultrasound), presented alphabetically. Descriptions include test purpose, patient preparation, risks and concerns, cost range and more. Labeled, color illustrations of major body systems (cardiovascular, digestive, etc.) help pinpoint target areas.
Low Marks A "results" box in each write-up describes the diagnostic process and what tests or treatments may follow. But it offers no information on how to interpret test results. So if you're looking for help in questioning your doctor's interpretation -- or even knowing what "normal" ranges are - you won't find it here. Further, the index at the front of the book lacks page references, so once you find a test there, you have to turn to the index at the back of the book to get the page number.
