      Book Description

A new wire weaving technique that varies the number of wires and their thickness to create stunningly beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and pendants is introduced in this guide. Project instructions go well beyond simple line drawings to show the assembly process of each piece in a series of step-by-step photographs. The nine projects begin with an elegantly simple woven bracelet and move on to more dramatic projects that include a domed cuff bracelet with soldered bead ends, a free-form bracelet, a woven neck piece, and a pendant with a woven frame. Projects range in difficulty from easy to advanced, and many can be completed without soldering. The more experienced craftsperson will savor the way Precious Metal Clay adds striking embellishments to three of the projects.

4 out of 5 stars A new twist on wire jewelry.......2007-02-19

The jewelry in this book is gorgeous and ultimately not that difficult to make. You will need to find some way to finish the clasps though as the braiding creates a non-conventional end which needs finishing. The book suggests PMC or soldering to accomplish this. There are only about three basic designs and then variations on the closure techniques. Its all very pretty and inspiring and much more classy that simple wire wrapping. You will have to do a little math too, to figure out how much wire you will need. Its a pretty book with a couple of very nice unique ideas upon which you can build once you get the hang of this technique.

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK . . . for the most part.......2006-11-29

I have to admit that since it took two months to receive this book, I had considered canceling my order on more than several occasions. However, am I glad I didn't!! What a beautiful and informative book! The photographs and the designs are all sensational. The projects looked difficult to me at first, but once I looked at the clear blow-by-blow photographs of each step, I have been never been less intimidated, nor so excited, to get my hands into a project! I LOVED the mold-making lessons on how to make sterling silver accents out of PMC clay if I wanted to add them to the necklaces and bracelets. I'm so pleased to find that I can make an entire piece of fine art jewelry without any man-made additions, nor the use of glue, and many times without any soldering. I'm thrilled, and my biggest regret is that I'm marking up this beautiful book with underlines, written notes, and stickies; it is definitely a working book for me.

**Although I stand by the above review written 11/06, I felt that I needed to add to it hoping that if there is a book reprint, the authors will update what I consider one serious breech of instruction clarity. Now that I've tried some of the projects, what I found was that none of the wire amounts necessary were listed. I had to determine the amount of wire for each project by hunting through the body of instructions until I located the wire length and the cuts, and only THEN could I calculate how much wire I needed. This process is repeated over and over again depending on how many gauges of wire are needed for the project. Frankly, it's irritating. Although, to be fair, all the wire information is there to complete each project, you really have to hunt for it.

In a future reprint, it would be VERY helpful for the amount of wire required for each project to be in the supply list along with each of the wire gauges. Brief instructions on how to change the size of the project through wire length adjustments would be sufficient for those users who might want to adapt it, but for the vast majority . . . specific wire amounts given up front would make it much easier to complete a project.

4 out of 5 stars Braid wire in a day!.......2006-09-19

I found the authors' instructions to be very clear. I had no trouble following their instructions, and made a bracelet in a day! I especially liked the way they showed photos of common mistakes and how to fix them. The section on precious metal clays was very interesting and I am looking forward to trying PMC. I have been braiding wire ever since I got the book, and have received many compliments on the braided wire bracelet I made from the book. My one disappointment is that the authors' showed many beautiful styles in the gallery, but did not include instructions on those braiding/weaving techniques. I would recommend this book for anyone interesting in learing how to braid wire.

      3 out of 5 stars dissapointing.......2006-09-12

      pros: elegant designs
very detailed instructions, step by step
cons: different designs but same technique. lack variety. there are many different types of woven chain, but not much in this book.

i thought this book was all about weaving, but i found a lot of precious matal clay stuff in the book. it can be good if that's what you are interested

4 out of 5 stars Clever, clear and not for the beginner !.......2006-04-08

Let me start by saying that if you are interested in making jewelry. You should learn to solder! It is not that difficult, nor has to be that expensive. You can purchase a butane torch that is refilled from the same cans that refill lighters. Add to that the three different solders, hard, med and soft or easy. These are different melting temperatures solder needed. with the flux and one or two tools you have you can silver solder form $30 to under $100.U.S. It will expand your work and range more than anything else you can do. As to the book in question. First is if you want to learn these techniques but balk at spending the money for the silver wire. Just replace it with bare copper wire or brass wire from the hobby or home center. The bare copper wire sold in the electrical dept is called ground wire and they have a number of gauges.
The book is laid out with plenty of color pictures. This is nice for us visual learners. They also have complete descriptions
to go along with the pictures.
My biggest problem with the book,is to somebody that is flipping through the projects the material lists doesn't have the total length of any gauge wire needed. It is listed in the description paragraph at the start of the project instructions. It does make it harder for somebody that is new to weaving. Or does have multiple feet of the size wire on hand. The first 8 chapters are for weaving and then the metal clay finishes out the book consisting of one chapter 35 pages in length. Again the clay info is for the brand PMC clay, but they do tell you that if you use the other clay(Art Metal) you will have to adjust to suit the techniques and requirements of it. The quick clamp idea and use is great but it needed to be expanded to show mounting it to a board or pipe so it can be held in a vise or under the legs of the person weaving. I do like some of the projects with the mixed size wire and will replace some of the clay with metal inserts. I do own It.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!.......2007-08-11

This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to explore jewelry design and creation! Frey's writing style is accessible and inviting and the photography is amazing. Frey tells readers who are just beginning, how to get started, complete with advice about what tools and materials to buy. She then offers a variety of projects, which will interest jewelry makers at various levels. This is an informative and inspirational book!

      2 out of 5 stars A disappointment..........2007-07-01

I usually am quite pleased with Lark jewelry books, but this one was a disappointment. While the instructions are clear and the photographs are helpful, the projects were so very easy and there was so much repetition between the projects this book is appropriate only for people who are just beginning wire craft. Of the twenty-one projects offered in this book, there are only six discrete jewelry types. The remaining projects are near copies of each other, rendered in slightly different shapes. Even for those who are just beginning with wire, there are much better introductions to the craft, such as Mark Lareau's All Wired Up: Wire Techniques for the Beadworker and Jewelry Maker (Beadwork How-To series).

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2007-09-08

I bought this and Truty's book, Metal Clay The Complete Guide. Both books deal with the basics such as clay, tools, and equipment; but Wire spends far less time and explanation of the basics. It is glossed over. This would be fine, but the rest of the book is filled with some really ambitious projects for jewelry that one would never want to wear or sell. One project has you making a ring and to this ring you attach a very large bead that is attached by metal tubing. It looks more like a beaded weapon than a work of art.

Perhaps this book might inspire the artist in you. To be fair, there are some pieces I liked. For the most part, it just seems like most is glossed over. Glance at it in a store, and buy Truty's book for reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to your Metal Clay Library .......2007-07-26

CeCe has produced another wonderful read. Like most books on Metal Clay she begins with an overview of product, techniques, tools etc. As someone who has worked with clay for a number of years now I often find this tedious, however this time I didn't. Why? simply because there were a couple of techniques new to me ( Setting stones in Sheet Clay, Slip Dip Setting ) and the top quarter page in this section is devoted to a gallery of glorious creations by a plethora of names, a veritable who's who of Silver Clay are featured, better still, the vast majority of images are new.

CeCe moves forward to create 25 diverse projects, each concentrating on a specific skill. They are creative, such as using silver mesh wire to create the foundation for an enamel plique-a-jour pin, there is wonderful use of the diversity of the clays - both silver and gold, slab, sheet and paste.

Earrings, pendants, pins, rings and brooches - all covered in some wonderful designs that are achievable. As in her previous book, the projects are limited to a finished photo and written instructions, there are no step by step photos which may cause some people concern, especially if you are a visual and not verbal learner, just as the use of language - 1st, 2nd and next generation clay (clearly explained at the start) rather than brand type may also cause you to pause. I actually like this explanation. Overall another wonderful book to add to your Metal Clay Library.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-07-18

I'm fairly new to PMC but buy a lot of books about something I'm interested in. This book is fabulous for all levels of experience...thorough descriptions of all the types and brands of clay, many techniques, and many gallery pieces to learn from. Far and away the best I've seen. Don't pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Wire Jewelry.......2007-06-15

What a GREAT way to start out making wire jewelry! Kathy Peterson, the author, really hit home with me in her easy to read and photo filled book. Listing all the "wire basics" up front such as tools, findings, and design basics made it a home run with me. The photography is very good with step-by-step instructions. Lot's of different wire jewelry projects to choose from too. This one ranks a 5 star with me and my friends!

wow...i wish i could have given this book less than one star. as another reviewer said, i cant BELIEVE anyone published this. i would expect this quality of work from preschoolers. I threw this book away as i did not see anyone benefiting from it. I should have read the reviews...

1 out of 5 stars Less Than One Star!!.......2007-01-28

The title & cover of this book force the potential buyer into believing they may actually create REAL, GENUINE, AUTHENTIC JEWELRY!! In fact, all you get is an after-school daycare craft project using color coated craft wire, along with other sub-standard materials and so-called techniques. One would have to wonder how this book ever made it through the publisher's fact-finding department when they checked the definition of "jewelry." I don't mean to be cruel, but as someone who takes creating art jewelry very seriously, this just offends me. I beg anyone reading this....DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!! There are hundreds of books written by true jewelry artisans from whom you can actually learn real techniques that will inspire you like crazy! (Not someone who just barely started twisting wire a year and a half ago) Give one of those other ones a shot! Truly!

1 out of 5 stars Creative Wiire Jewelry.......2006-12-24

I read through this book and was so dissatisfied with the quality of the designs and the cheap materials suggested that I relisted my copy on Amazon the next day. Not worth the trouble. I wish the author had taken the time to learn more before writing the book. The techniques taught were not always the standard process, and would produce a lower quality end result. A shame she got published in an discipline where more creative projects would be appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Wiring my Brain to be Creative.......2005-08-27

Kathy Peterson's book is awesome. I've never made any jewelry and with this book, I feel like a pro. I've made gifts for some friends who couldn't believe that I made them. Peterson has a way of explaining things that is easy to understand and is not intimidating to the novice.

This book sparked my creativity. It made me think of all kinds of other things I can do with wire and with jewelry making.

Thank you for writing something that makes sense to those of us who are not so creative.

I was really excited to get this book from looking at the cover. However, I'm somewhat disappointed in the types of patterns that it has available; most items are accessories, and the wearables are okay... just not my style. If you love accessories of any kind, then you will like this book, if not... you will share my opinion.

Positively Crochet! Our bookshelves have long awaited current, stylish crochet pattern books. Not only does this collection meet the demands, it goes even further with Mary Jane's well written patterns, shaping tips and solid suggestions for the beginner as well as advanced crocheter. Packed with many months worth of projects I am excited to add this to my home library and look forward to starting many of the designs. Deborah Spigner

      5 out of 5 stars What a Marvelous Book!.......2007-09-22

I love it! Lots of patterns to choose from, a wide variety of sizes, and projects that even appeal to my 13-year-old Gothling, with appropriate color changes, of course. Most pattern books contain between 10 and 25 patterns; this one has a full 50 to choose from, as well as words of encouragement on every page. The patterns range from simple to more complex but well explained; it's a book you can grow with if you are a beginner. A more advanced crochet artist might gravitate to the more complex patterns, but the wide selection means there's a choice of a quick, simple project for a weekend in addition to fashion tops. I highly recommend it to any crocheter.

Another reviewer said to avoid the book if you didn't like to see the word "God;" I'm not a Christian but found the word non-specific enough not to ruffle my feathers -- and I have practice at feather ruffling! I like the positive quotes. It keeps the book upbeat and dynamic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Positive Notes and Great Designs.......2007-09-20

I really like this book. I'm very particular about crochet books. Alot of times, I buy the book and I'm disappointed. With Positively Crochet, I found several items that I wanted to make (which I'm currently making the tangerine top AND the easy shrug). I also love the positive notes in the book. I was thrilled to hear from the author on my blog! She was willing to help me if I had any questions! Wow, most authors wouldn't give you the time of the day! This is one of the must have books! 2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-09-18

I pre-ordered this book hoping to receiving a great collection of wearables and classic, simple designs that I could refer to again and again. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

I'm a 23 year old, pretty experienced crocheter, and I'd consider myself on the classic side of "hip." There were maybe 2-3 designs in this book I'd even consider making, let alone wearing. Like another reviewer mentioned, way too many jewelry patterns and scarves bulking it up.

And maybe I'm in the minority, but I found the "positive sayings" tacky and distracting.

I regret buying this, but I'll keep it for the 2 patterns I may make.

        Book Description

"In wildness is the preservation of the world," wrote Henry David Thoreau. But how the wild and the managed or artificially arranged environments coexist has been a matter of intense debate among foresters and landscape professionals at least since the era of Frederick Law Olmsted Sr.

In Forest and Garden, Melanie L. Simo ranges through a period of landscape history that has been underexamined, between Olmsted and mid-twentieth-century modernism, when the contours of the debate were formed and the landscape professions came of age. Simo's book spans half a century, from the year that Charles Sprague Sargent's influential Garden and Forest magazine ceased publication in 1897 to the appearance in 1949 of two unusual books about land and landscape--Aldo Leopold's Sand County Almanac and Jens Jensen's The Clearing--that marked the beginning of a new ecological awareness.

Forest and Garden covers this middle ground by focusing on the apparent oppositions between culture and nature, city and country, science and art, and between professions peopled with figures such as John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, the Olmsteds, Mary Austin, Willa Cather, Bernard Maybeck, Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Beston, and Benton MacKaye. In this earlier era when novelists, conservationists, foresters, and landscape designers still shared a common language, Simo finds areas of overlap in how their writings express their perceptions of the land, its uses, its beauty, and its fate. Organizing her study by region and landscape type, from desert and prairie to Metropolitan New York and Boston, and extending from ecological concerns in garden design to Leopold's call for a land ethic, Simo moves beyond the polarized views of current environmental debate.

        Book Description

Nearly 2.5 million couples will walk down the aisle in 2001 and each couple will want to find the perfect words to make their wedding as eloquent as it is elegant. 4 out of 5 stars Great for Words, Not So Good for Instructions.......2007-01-30

I should begin by saying I am a practicing non-denominational and interfaith minister. I've been writing and performing marriage ceremonies for many years, now. "Words for the Wedding" is an excellent source of non-Biblical readings, poems, quotations, and other words that can be used within a wedding ceremony, or in a toast, or even on an invitation or thank-you card. It contains many citations I have never seen before, and which are really quite good! On that score, this book is great!

Unfortunately, the authors also offer instructions on writing your own ceremony and vows, and how one interacts with clergy or other individuals who officiate wedding ceremonies. This part is a little misleading.

Most embers of the clergy have a specific liturgy they use for weddings. More liberal practitioners, will often create a place for "personal vow" statements and include specially requested readings in the ceremony. And, we often adjust our content based on the preferences of the bride and groom. But for many reasons, the overall ceremony will follow a basic structure and most of the specific content will be chosen by the person performing the ceremony. There are very few marriage ceremonies that are actually written by the bride and groom.

So my suggestion is, use the content of this book as a treasure trove of interesting and romantic writings that can be incorporated into your wedding. But please, check with the person who will perform the ceremony before spending a lot of time planning and writing your own text.

5 out of 5 stars It has tons of Readings for your wedding day!.......2005-12-28

From Shakespeare to Sleepless in Seattle, this is one of the best weddding vow books I have read. It offers many reading to choose from. Creating a day that will be unique to the couple getting married, and choosing their own vows.

        4 out of 5 stars A mixed resource.......2003-03-12

Lots of quotations in this book -- many too short or of dubious distinction to include in a wedding ceremony (do you really want to quote a TV or movie character in your wedding?? I don't). The material unique to this volume seemed as if it would be much more useful as humorous or thoughtful snippets to use in the wedding program or toasts. The poetry and short readings are largely selections that you can find elsewhere (many of them the usual suspects), so the real contribution of this book is in the more popular cultural references mentioned above, if your sensibility tends that way.

The thematic/contextual organization is strong and fairly comprehensive -- covering not only the ceremony, but also other kinds of "words" performed at a wedding, such as toasts. I'd suggest using this book with a more substantive and original anthology, such as Into the Garden.

4 out of 5 stars From Romantic to Raucous..........2002-12-12

After I read a lot of these type of books in preparation for my own wedding, I selected this one because of its wide range of time periods, subjects, and types of quotes and selections. Words for the Wedding is perfect if you're interested in a good read with lots of fun, inspiring, or romantic shorter selections for incorporating into other places such as programs, favors, personal vows and toasts. I will admit though, that I did not like many of the longer pieces as much as the shorter ones.

        4 out of 5 stars Really useful.......2002-06-29

This is a great book; packed with a huge variety of quotes, poems, excerpts. Perhaps my one complaint is that many of the quotes are too short to be used as readings, if that's what you're looking for. But overall the book uses a wide range of creative sources (movies, love letters, poetry, plays, etc.) and will give you lots of ideas and starting points for elements of your own wedding.
