For those of us who are not fortunate enough........2007-06-22

Everyone has accalades for this writing, It is along the lines of philosophy, spirit, and tradition. Craftsmanship and artistry as well as guidance are something I have sought for 6 years now. Even offered to be a gopher for other woodworkers I have admired. "Norm" has taught us how to use "Power Tools". He has shared woodworking techniques, the New Yankee way. Sam Maloof teaches us his love of wood. Some of the masters we revere have demonstrated the "way they got there". It is a step by step process. Odatesan guides us through the mentoring process in the tradition of the writer, with pictures, and stories.

I can't get the master to guide me from the outside, so I am fortunate to have this book to guide me from the inside.

The "spirit of wood" is a personal journey. This book is helping me through mine. Glad I found it.

japanese woodworking tools.......2006-08-17

Toshio Odate is a national treasure. I was lucky enough to be trained by him 30 years ago when he was teaching at Pratt Institute. He is a rare man who is bigger than life. His essense, love and respect to wood and the tools that he uses to create magic in wood are openly expressed in his book. You will walk away from reading this book with a new view on life and what it is to truly be a master.

This book is about a way of life.......2006-07-10

This book is much more than a owner's manual for Japanese tools. The author, Toshio Odate, grew up with a father that was a woodworker and he apprenticed with his father.

The author shares many of his experiences; the unique methods of teaching are really quite different than American methods. For example, as an apprentice, there is no formal instruction--the apprentice must learn by observing the master while the apprentice is working--and woe be upon any apprentice that takes his attention away from his work. How one 'learns' in this situation is beyond me but apparently it works.

A couple of other examples: Odate-san left some stones freeze one evening during the winter which cracked them. That warranted a substantial beating.

Odate-san saved his extra money for a year and purchased a quality hand plane which is master promptly confiscated and he never saw it again. Apparently, because Odate-san was stil an apprentice, he was not worthy of quality tools and would never be allowed to see this tool, which he saved for for over a year, again.

I can't comprehend why breaking Odate-san's heart was a good way to teach him woodworking skills, but he seems to be over the hurt inflicted by that episode. And now he is a master woodworker that is reaping substantial royalties from the books he wrote. So, that system seems to work.

The author provides many details regarding the use of Japanese tools. There really isn't much else you need to know. Also, the drawings are very good but a few more photos (in color) would be nice.

The section regarding sharpening could be expanded with some additional information and techniques, such as hollow grinding, the use of sandpaper and the benefits of synthetic stones.

When I ordered this book I had no Idea of what I was in for. You have to read it to understand what I mean. If you are a woodworker of any type or have an interest in Japanese Culture. You will love this book. I have never met Toshio Odate yet I have great respect for what he has done here.

Wish I didn't even have to give it one star........2007-10-12

If you buy into his demented logic, then by all means this is the book for you.

However I would recommend any parenting book over this garbage. Try something from the Dr. Sears selection.

The New Dare to Discpline.......2007-09-19

This book tells it well, that if you love your children, I mean really love your children, you will discipline them. By disciplining them, it takes more than making them feel good, it teaches them to take control of their wills, to shape their lives, to understand what is true and good. Sometimes that takes a spanking when they are too defiant. Anyone who has raised children, knows this to be true. Do well for your child by discipliing your child.

Power trip.......2007-08-23

If you are on a power trip over your children, this is the book for you. Adults who would use this book as a guide for child rearing are creating the next generation of child abusers. There are dozens of great books on the market for all aspects of child rearing. Don't let this charlatan who thinks he has a direct line to God, tell you anything. He understands children about like Attila the Hun understood human nature.

I doubt his ability to raise a dog, much less children.......2007-08-15

The episode describing a small dog and a grown man having a tantrum (the author)makes me wonder about whether Dobsdon should be allowed to raise dogs, much less children. When a small dog refuses to go into his kennel, it is a simple matter to pick it up and place it in the kennel. Yet this man who beat a dog for several minutes and is seemingly proud of it, dispenses advice on child rearing.

I also find it interesting that he calls himself a Christian, but doesn't mention Jesus in this book.

I'd rate it zero stars if possible.......2007-08-15

Dobson, himself an acknowledged victim of child abuse, perpetuates the problem by dressing it up in religion. Without qualifications in pediatrics, child psychology, social work or even theology, he twists and tortures the Bible to justify what can only be described as a severe psychological illness of his own.

The techniques he advocates - prolonged spanking, and even shaking - are dangerous, and are documented causes of both severe injury and death.

Please, please, do not buy this book, and do not recommend it to your friends. It destroys children.

It's a good book, if you want a summary of her previous work. Otherwise is almost a repetition. It wont hurt to go over the same principles she wrote about in her other books. Very refreshing in this sense.

Catherine Ponder is AWESOME!.......2004-08-15

I have read just about all of her books. They are motivatiing and uplifting and give you an undaunting will to achieve. I fist read her prosperity books and then books on receiving and then started to get into verses of the bible and how they moreso support her interpretations of the bible. I was fascinated to see that the bible does reward people who are God fearing and God does bless not only the poor but the rich as well. Before I read these books I had only found passages of the bible where you are blessed when you are poor and only the bad charectars in the bible were the rich ones, LOL!

I love Catherine Ponder's books, as they are all so uplifting, full of hope and affirmations. DARE TO PROSPER is another wonderful book by this amazing author. I finished this book in one day and then re-read it again, as the gems of wisdom contained within are huge.

Ponder lists four steps for prosperous thinking and how to make your dreams your reality. Appropriate biblical quotes and abundant examples from readers using her formula for success are contained throughout the entire book. The methods that Ponder writes about, work incredibly!! One just has to believe and to change one's negative, limiting way of thinking to positive and prosperous thinking.

Ponder also talks about tithing and quoting examples again from the Bible and others who tithed their way to prosperity with God as their silent partner.

This small book is packed full of wisdom, insight and tools for one to become prosperous. Ponder dares you to prosper, as there is abundant abundance in the universe for everyone to partake in. I really liked the section on developing a master plan for prosperity and Ponder tells you very simply on how to develop your own master plan.

Ponder's writing style is very down to earth and using real life examples from others who have employed her methods adds greatly to her books. Biblical examples are also used, but not to the point where this is a "religious" book and the reader does not get turned off from the quotes, but I feel that the quotes add greatly to what she is teaching about.

I read the book with each child we had [ 4 times]. I found it practical and common sense. There are a lot of folks who buy into worldly philosophy and ignore the Creators values and means. In no way does the book advocate violence. Our children are now adults and are requesting copies now that the grandkids have come along.

I continue to marvel at "men" like James Dobson who blatantly ignores all the solid statistical evidence that children brought up with love and without violence function better in life.
Dobson is also an anti-porn crusader, and he also ignores the fact that anywhere porn has been legalized, rape statistics have dropped dramatically. (Source: the book 'Porn 101')

My father used Dobson's methodology as a license to strike. If you wish to die alone in a nursing home, I suggest you listen to those who worship hate and violence. There is not a day that I don't dream of lashing my old man with a studded belt to punish him in return, and am contemplating not having children to let the cycle of violence end with me.

Book should be entitled "Dare to Hit Your Child with Whatever is Handy". Dobsen extolls virtues of his wife snapping their not yet two-year-old with a switch across the shins, can you imagine? He also attests that he received great benefit, as a child, by being spontaneously walloped by his mom's girdle, complete with buckles and straps.

The fact is, that spontaneous anger from a parent can be beneficial to a child, in seeing that his actions may set off undesired reactions. Yet, spontaneous violence sends an absolutely wrong message of physical superiority making "right" in a confrontational situation.

My children turned out quite well, I think with equal parts luck, love, and parental boundries. I didn't get anything from this book (I read it years ago) that I utilized in child-rearing, except a dedication to never hit my children.

I borrowed this book from a co-worker who used Dr Dobson's methods to raise her 2 ,now grown, children. I would recommend this to anyone with questions or concerns on any kind on displine. It changed many of the beliefs I had previously held on displine. Dr Dobson teaches how to incorporate displine and love and that the two go together.

Too much word puzzle, not enough Latin.......2002-03-18

I was slightly disappointed by this book. I like to do regular crossword puzzles, and I love Latin! This book--in spite of the title--isn't really a crossword book, but rather a word puzzle book. It also plays with the Latin, using anagrams and little word twists. I think it would be a lot of fun for someone who just loves all different kinds of accrostics and other word puzzles, and also knows a little Latin. If the Latin is your thing, this isn't the book for you.

Fun way to practice vocabulary.......2001-01-17

This is a fun little book, an interesting way to test your vocabulary when you are bored with flashcards. If you enjoy crosswords and know some latin, this is the book for you! I found that the problems did not make the best use of latin, though, and I did not like the author's use of anagrams- it was sometimes difficult to tell when they were being used. Overall, I had fun with it, and I think it helped my vocabulary; it was certainly a nice change of pace from the usual bookwork. Still, I would recommend it only if you love crosswords.

There's little dispute that journalism has played ~ and will continue to play ~ the primary role in our perception of world affairs and the world around us.

But, as Ian Hargreaves, author of 'Journalism: Truth or Dare', asks ~ is journalism the 'first draft of history' or has it become a form of entertainment obsessed with celebrity and trivia?

Whichever the case, 'Journalism: Truth or Dare' is a thought-provoking book which examines the big issues facing international journalism ~ everything from ethics, accountability and opinion to obscenity, libel and corporate interests.

The book considers journalism in all its guises, from the origins of the free press in England 300 years ago to today's global media empires, including iconic figures, like Rupert Murdoch, as well as movies depicting the media. This comment is typical of the author's approach. Part apologist, part condemner ~ it is difficult to determine his ultimate opinion on journalism today. He makes many valid points for and against its value in society, but to the end his own conclusions remain unclear. Maybe Hargreaves, like all good journalists, is simply reporting the facts without fear or favor, leaving it to the reader to decide.

All in all, 'Journalism: Truth or Dare' presents a considered, well-balanced appraisal of the industry of journalism, examining the major debates, concerns and future directions. It is an important book for our time and one that should be read by all deep-thinking people.

Just what I need..........2001-12-28

...to go to the next level in every area of my life. I receive the scripture references in this book. There are areas in my life that need DISCIPLINE and this book gives me spiritual and natural insight to realize it is the will of God for me to be disciplined, in order to have what the Word of God say I can have. I believe I have been called out of mediocracy into great exploits. Dare to Discipline Yourself is a great tool to use(read) continually which will set me on the right path, in Him. I give this book a five star rating. Eventhough, all topics may not be a challenge for me at this time, I believe I can read all to relay to someone else. Thank you for making available this priceless treasure.

While the advice in this book is valid, anyone who is not profoundly Christ-centered may find themselves uncomfortable with the Bible references and Christian focus on every page. If you're looking for a secular goal-oriented book to motivate yourself with, I'd suggest checking out "The Power of Focus" by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt. (The Chicken Soup for the Soul series guys). Packed with information, yet humorous enough to keep you reading, it's twice this book without the preachy-ness! (and not at twice the price, either).

My friend has this book and I read it upon his recommendation. After reading this book, I came to Amazon.com to buy a copy for myself. I found it to be inspiring and a dare to discipline yourself! If you believe you are disciplined and don't need this book, my friend, let me tell you that you do need this book! This book will open your eyes! God Himself has inspired the writing of this book!
