Useful and inspirational in many ways.......2007-08-12

This is one of my absolute favorite design books. While it's primarily directed to designing quilts, it's tremendously useful for designing patterns in any craft that uses modules or blocks, especially crochet or knitting.

While densely packed with information, it's written in a way which is readily understood, with plenty of examples and illustrations. It's best to work through in sections, taking the time to absorb the principles and play with the ideas, instead of trying to rush through everything.

I showed this book to a friend who's an art collecter and a particular fan of Escher. He ordered his own copy that very day, after I had to pry his fingers off of my copy.

I bought this book with the intent of it being a gift for someone interesteed in collecting "art books" who also likes fiber arts and quilting. I ended up keeping the book as I couldn't bear to give it away after opening it! It is Very readable, the excersies are understandable and useful, and by the end of each chapter you have a firm grasp of that aspect of 2 dimensional surface design. Several friends are waiting to borrow it from my library, but its one that I'll keep track of.

Excellent for quilters as well as M.C. Escher fans.......2004-08-18

This is the best book on tessellations I have seen. Since my main goal was to learn M.C. Escher's technique, I was first surprised to see that the author primarily deals with developing quilt patterns, from simple to complex. Only the last few chapters are dedicated to M.C. Escher's work. But I realized quickly that every page leads up to the next, teaching more and more intricate patterns until I was able to analyze Escher's work and see for myself how he developed the patterns.

The book is full of illustrations and step-by-step drawings, so that you can soon create your own artistic work. And using a computer drawing program along with the book is not necessary but helpful if you want fast results with many variations.

After reading, or better working through, this book I looked at other books that concentrated on Escher's work, but none of the authors explained his techniques better than Jinny Beyer. Thanks to her clear explanations and drawings I am now able to develop quite intricate designs on my own.

This is a well-rounded book that contains information on historical/traditional uses as well as current research, international acceptance, and safety information. It's five- star rating system gives you an at-a-glance overview of each herb. Great Reference.......2004-06-25

This is a great reference book for anyone who is learning about herbs, their uses, and their true names. It reads well, covers the topics thoroughly without being boring... which is saying something! :) However...

This book has an obvious European bias which makes it difficult for someone like me in the USA to get all the info that I need. I will have to find another N.American reference book to complete my training. However, that is the ONLY problem with this book. It is, without question, the most thorough book I have on the subject, and certainly the easiest read.

A Must Have Book.......2000-08-14

This is one of the most helpful books I own. It has helped me in treating myself and my cats. You are able to look up a sympton, problem or disease and find herbs, homeopathic remedies, foods, etc. that are used to treat the problem. There is also a comprehensive section on individual herbs and salts. It is the easiest book to navigate and I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in natural health care.

Best Kid Book Ever.......2007-07-30

This is my first Amazon review. Normally, I wouldn't waste my time. But, recently I wanted to reference this book, and I remembered, my copy was stolen. Bummer. But like in the old Zen parable, I wish the thief well with it, for I already have been blessed by the light the book casts like the moon on the landscape. Hands down, this is the best book on relating to and guiding your child, without abandoning a sense of discipline, I have ever come across. You quickly realize, however, that the discipline is with yourself, to lead by your own rooted example.

Very wise, very gentle. It will make you excited to get up in the morning and go parenting! Every chapter, you will want to put down the book and hug your child. It's really that good.

When you find yourself wondering how you can continue doing the mundane, day to day, oft mindless work of raising children then you need to read this book.

I am raising 4 children in a culture that does not value community or child rearing as a noble vocation. Polly's book gave me strength in the face of despair. It taught me that my children had chosen to come into my life to teach me how to live as much as for me to teach them how to be. Do not let the spiritual nature of this book frighten you. Her teaching is gentle and wise.

I read this 16 years ago (wish I could remember how I came upon it) before our son and daughter were born.

The philosophy of this book re-shaped my entire view of life and parenthood. Basically, once you realize that life with kids is ALL about the kids, frustration melts away and is replaced with infinite joy.

Children are as close to God as we will ever get on earth.

Wow, this book is the one parenting book that I have read that I can say changed my entire way of looking at my job as a mother. The spirituality of being a parent and the spiritual lessons that await us every single day are now so apparent in my mind after reading this book. My relationship with my spirited child and nursing babe has completely been transformed as I process this book and consciously live out the spiritual moments of my day. Please give this book at least a chance to enter into your journey of parenthood.

I discovered this at the discount table of a bookstore in Lexington, Kentucky. It does not get old or outdated.

How easily this book could have drifted off into self-indulgent Freudian psychobabble, Fundamentalist moralism or New Age narcissism--all of which Alice Miller has warned us against--in the hands of a less gifted writer. The fact that it doesn't at any time in 340-plus pages is nothing short of miraculous. Polly Berends not only challenges one's view of parenting and loving, but also of Christianity and culture and the universe itself, by bringing mysticism back to the modern Christian mind while not alienating those of other (or no particular) faiths. Filled with transcendent prose, quotes of everything from Buddhist sacred text to the New Testament to e.e. cumming poetry, and the writer's own heart (the heart of a proud mother and wife who walks with God), this is a truly beautiful work that made my mind scream what was important about my personal relationship with my son to me, above the distractions of my ego, with virtually every page.

Consider yourself the child, and this book will help you raise yourself. And then imagine what kind of real parent you can be while following its lessons.

This is the ultimate holiday, Mother/Father's Day or birthday gift for anyone with children, bar none.
