THE BEST BOOK REFERENCE.......2006-08-14
I HAVE WANTED THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS PUBLISHED, AND WHEN I COULD
GET IT FROM YOU, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. I FIND IT TO BE THE BEST
OF REFERENCE BOOKS AROUND TO DATE. THANK YOU.
Truly exceptional book.......2006-07-27
I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.
A space filler book .......2006-06-23
The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.
Disappointing.......2006-03-12
I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.
A Very Good Reference but not Perfect.......2006-03-04
Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

kourti-guppy.......2004-06-06
i love guppies, and theres a great chapter on them i would deffintly recomend this book
Very good comprehensive introduction to freshwater fishes.......2002-04-06
Although it's been around for about thirty years, it has been revised and updated. This is an excellent guide for getting a grasp on what those little fish are in the pet shop tank, what they need to eat, what they need in terms of water temperature, pH, hardness and quality, how much space they need, how well they get along with others, and how big they grow. (That cute little fish with "C. managuense" on the front of his tank will get along just *fine* in the 10-gallon tank with your fancy guppies! [NOT!]) There is even rudimentary breeding information for a great many species.
Even for advanced aquarists, there is a ton of useful information here, even though much of it is dated. The looseleaf edition allows for updates.
The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is somewhat dated. It's still one of the better all-around fish books you can get.
Finally, a great book about tropical fish..........2001-08-18
Exotic Tropical Fishes is phenomenal in both covering almost all commercially available (and some not readily available) types of tropical fish as well as providing color pictures and vital stat's on these animals. It was tremendously valuable in helping us to set up our aquarium, stock it with compatible fish, and quickly identify and treat the diseases which occassionally invaded. It is truly ashame that this tome of fish is no longer in print. I highly recommend buying it, even used, over any of the currently available, new books that I have seen on this subject. From experience, I have found that the information in most major pet stores is often incorrect; therefore, we always take this book with us when purchasing fish as it is a staple of any well-informed aquarist.
Exotic Tropical Fishes.......2000-01-15
Has a medium ammount of information about alot of fish. Great place to get the basics about which fish you want to do what whith. Book looks a bit dated, but the information seems about the same.
Exotic Tropical Fishes.......1999-12-25
This is an superb book that is well worth it's weight. Although expensive this is a publication which all who are deepley interested in tropical fish must have! This is the type of book that would be used by people in the tropical fish trade as well as the admirer.

A Wonderful Classic.......2005-10-18
William Innes is widely considered the dean of the aquarium hobby in the US. My parents purchased this book for me along with my first 20 gallon tank when I was in high school, in the early 70s. It is truly a pleasure to read. He has a graceful, engaging writing style, and his book is full of practical information. While some parts are out of date (an antibiotic is referred to as a "wonder drug") don't let this dissuade you. This is an outstanding first book for a new hobbyist, and yet remains useful even for the more experienced hobbyist. It is one of my all-time favorite books, and I have a lot of books!
I have the 19th edition revised, which has a YELLOW and White cover, and says 19th edition revised in a red banner near the top. After this edition, the rights were acquired by TFH, to my great regret. They "revised" it by putting in a lot of crude product placements for their products. It really detracts from the charm of the original. Try to get the 19th edition revised, with the yellow and white cover.
For several generations this was the Bible of Tropical Fish.......2005-05-31
Four and a half stars.
My does this book bring back memories. I acquired my first copy back for my birthday in 1968 and spent many a night pouring over it as though it was sacred scripture.
It still makes for valuable reading but fortunately the hobby has evolved to the point where fish survival rates are much higher especially for the beginner due to more modern techniques than those elucidated in this book. In that way its advice about setting up an aquarium is quite outdated. However most of the fish described and their morphology and behavior are still the same and the information offered still of great use to the aquarist. Descriptions of each species are literate and used to send off my mind to dream in the same way as a child's mind would dream when viewing a window full of toys.
I believe this book will remain a classic for years to come.
best of classics.......2002-12-13
as old as this book is it still provides relevant information. the only thing negative i can think of is its range of species which could be wider in my opinion. a great book at [price] or less.
A Must-Have Memorabilia for Hardcore Fish Heads.......2002-03-22
William T. Innes was the Godfather of the aquarium hobby in the first half of the 20th century. And "Exotic Aquarium Fishes" was (and many feel still is) the greatest book every wrritten for and about the aquarium hobby.
Innes was the publisher of the Aquarium Magazine and knew his stuff. But more importantly, he was a man of letters; The Innes Book (as it is called) reads like prose, not just boilerplate or dull descriptions so common in churn-em-out Axelrod/TFH books of the latter half of the century. Innes spent years writing this book and it shows. The color plates (painted photographs) are exquisite as well.
But caution: MAKE SURE you purchase the edition published by the Innes Publishing Company - not Metaframe or TFH (which altered some of the text, changed the format, and produced it on lower quality black and white paper after the copyright ran out).
A great gift for the hardcore fish nut in your life and a historic document!
Useful for decades!.......2000-05-03
I first read the Innes Book, as we called Exotic Aqaurium Fishes by Dr. William T. Innes back then, in the late 70's, in its 19th edition. I was a teenage hobbyist back then, and the book was biblical to me and my peers. Recently, I discovered my old copy in a box of books we had stored in the garage, and was delighted to flip throught the pages and see that I could still learn new things from this grand classic by one of the pioneers of fresh-water ichtyology. Hopefully, I went to Amazon.com to see if I could locate a more recent edition (the 19th edition mostly sports black and white photographs and some of the scientific data on specific specimens is dated). I was delighted to discover the 21st edition! With valuable illustrations, taxonomic and biotope contributions, as well as descriptions, and transportation and husbandry advice, the Innes Book is a fine complement to Dr. Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Tropical Fishes, which is much more complete (7800 photos) but which only mentions common names in the index (60 pages of it!) and offers only the most succinct coded advice on fishkeeping, due to it's immense range. I recommend both books to any tropical fish hobbyist who wishes to maintain even a small comprehensive library on the subject.

Book Description
Vogue® Knitting goes wild for hats--and crocheters will too, with this new volume in the wildly popular take-it-with-you series.
Even novices can get in on the hatmaking fun, because these chic headgear patterns use only the most basic crochet techniques--and go forward one skill at a time. Yet the finished items look as good as something bought from a stylish boutique. A saucy brimmed hat, with a black yarn ribbon and bow trim, is positively adorable. The attractive striped helmet takes its inspiration from Peruvian colors, and has a flap to keep ears toasty warm. Liven up any outfit with a whimsical square cap in an array of pinks. From the sophisticated to the zany, the traditional to the unique, there's a style for everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Wish I'd Read the Reviews Before I Bought This Book.......2007-08-19
The hats in this book are cute. The instructions are disastrous! If you are fairly competent at crocheting, and if you always make swatches before beginning the actual item, you will be able to correct the errors in the patterns. If not . . .
Simple editing, checking the patterns for correctness and completeness, and adding glossary and comparable yarns would have made the contents a better match for the photos.
Save your time and your money. There are better books available.
Cute But Flawed... Not For a Novice.......2007-01-28
I have made three hats from this book and agree with the reviewers that the patterns are very cute but often wrong. If you buy this book, take the time to read through and maybe even chart the patterns before you get started.
One example: The Striped Helmet/Andean Treasure is way off, as noted by the other reviewer, but not that hard to adjust. Once you set the flaps, it'll be obvious the stitch counts front and back between the flaps are wrong and what you should do instead.
Another example: The mini ruffle pillbox, knitted out of cotton embroidery floss. This is a darling hat, since it calls for nearly 50 skeins of embroidery floss, all different colours, worked with two strands held together the whole time. It's not the nightmare of colour changing you would think; just crochet over the ends as you go. However, the gauge given is wrong, so you have extra work to do to figure out what the guage is and how to get the size you want. And, the colour specs are off. It's two strands held together yet the specs call for 49 skeins, which is wrong on the face of it -- what's with the extra? Worse yet, even though I bought and ordered the colours exactly, exactly as specified my hat ended up quite different from the picture. Cute, but different.
Bottom line: cute hats, but keep your wits about you. Not for the novice.
Cute patterns, but bad errors.......2006-11-01
I am an experienced crocheter and I was also trying to do the mesh hat and I tried it 3 times before I realized that there is no way that they checked these patterns before they published them. There was no minor misstake, the pattern was totally wrong. I figured out some of it, but I didn't have the motivation to do anymore. Another big problem that I had is the sizing of the hats. They are written for 19 or 20 inch heads and there are no instructions for adjustments. The hats are very cute, but I would check the book out from the library if you can.
Great Hats...Terrible Instructions.......2006-11-01
I have been crocheting for fifty years. Give me a skein of yarn, and my set of hooks...and I'm off to the races. A neighbor lent me this book as I was finishing another hat for my grand-daughter...each one an "original".
I was delighted with the idea of the "Striped Helmet" (Andean Treasure) on page 47. I toddled off to a local yarn shop and bought a couple of skeins of "high end" yarn. Checked my gauge with the size of her head and started the pattern.
Changing yarns every three rows is a bit finicky, but not a real problem. Once, however, you get to the directions for the earflaps everything starts to go wrong. The stitch counts at the end of each row don't "add up"...at all! (Get out your calculator, as I did). The instructions are ambiguous and misleading. I often transpose written instructions into international symbol crochet for ease of reading the pattern. Wouldn't work.
In other words, if you follows the directions faithfully, you will drive yourself crazy. Will NOT work as written.
I am going back to the hat, to 'frog' it and save that lovely yarn. Buy this book...if you must...for the pretty pictures. You'll have better luck counting the stitches on the close-ups than in following the printed instructions.
Could it be that having the book manufactured in China side-steps that critical last editorial test of each pattern?
Patterns have errors.......2006-06-18
I bought this book for the cute patterns and sat down yesterday to make the "mesh hat" in this book. There are many errors and typos in this pattern. I am a very experienced crocheter and was able to compensate for the typos and steps that are entirely omitted in the instructions. I am not going to waste my time on any of the other patterns in this book and don't recommend that others buy the book to begin with.

Detailed and lucid.......2006-08-03

I live in the Southeastern US and this book was spot on everything from blueberries to stone fruits and pears and apples, (not to mention Walnuts and Filberts). The best gardening book I own.......2005-12-07
This book has the most readable practicle information on every vegetable, herb or fruit I would ever grow plus many others. It covers some history of origin, varieties, cultivation, propagation, container and garden growing, harvesting & storage as well as uses both medicinal and culinary and also some recipies. I have not come across a more extensive book. My son & daughter both in their early 20's and just starting vege gardening use this as their bible. Well worth owning.
Fun and informative!.......2004-01-16
This book is wonderful! Every section gives you a in-depth overview of the vegetable, herb or fruit; detailing different varieties and how they rank in terms of taste and/or hardiness, how to propagate, grow, maintain, harvest and store. Plus gives tips of typical pests/diseases and how to avoid them. Very helpful are the "companion planting" paragraphs, explaining which plants do best next to each other. And to top it all off, each section includes a "culinary" and "medicinal" section, informing you of the best ways to use your crops once harvested. The pictures are beautiful and the wording is easy to understand and to the point. This is a great book for any gardener's reference shelf. Fun to read cover-to-cover, but set up so that you can dip in and out as you choose.
Book Description
An essential new resource for gardeners.
"In my experience of growing and writing about plants for 45 years, the first question people intemperate climates ask about an unfamiliar plant is whether it is hardy."
-from the Introduction
What is a hardy plant? What is a hardiness zone? What conditions affect hardiness? Gardening expert Derek Fell answers these and other questions of gardeners living in a temperate climate. He challenges strict adherence to the zone system and encourages readers to explore their garden's microclimates. Doing so can add two or three zones to a plant hardiness rating.
Encyclopedia of Hardy Plants is a comprehensive reference organized by plant type. Its easy-to-use directory format provides quick retrieval of specific data on over 700 recommended plants. Along with full color photographs of favorite annuals, bulbs, herbs, perennials, shrubs, trees, vegetables, fruits and nuts, the author includes:
- Botanical and common names
- Zone ratings
- Height, width and growth habits
- Flower, fruit, vegetable and nut production
- Suggested uses
- Soil, water and sunlight requirements
- Planting tips and combinations
- Preferred species and hybrids.
Encyclopedia of Hardy Plants provides a combination of observations, expertise and master photographs. This new book is a resource that gardeners will use again and again for its thoroughness, accessibility and reliability.

Book Description
According to the recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice, black males die at a rate fifteen times higher than that of white males because of homicidal violence. The Department estimates that 28 percent of black males will enter state or federal prisons during their lifetime. In response to these devastating statistics, psychologist, educator, and father Raymond Winbush has created The Warrior Method -- a program designed for parents and teachers to help black boys become strong, self-reliant men. Filled with thoughtful reflections on the author's own experiences, the book looks at a male's life through the prism of the four seasons: spring -- conception to four years old; summer -- ages five through twelve; autumn -- ages thirteen through twenty-one; and winter -- age twenty-two and beyond.
Winbush's comprehensive, step-by-step approach draws on such African traditions as the "Birthing Circle" and a "Young Warriors Council" to help boys make important transitions, along with numerous other modern variations on tribal customs that instill the values of self-respect, dignity, and honor.

Poignant and Scholarly information of what is needed.......2007-05-01
I bought this book this past saturday and finished on sunday. I could not put the book down. It was sooo good. This book should be required reading for whole families to read. The great thing about this book is that it not only gives you guidance in raising Black children but as an adult and a parent it makes you evaluate your approach in dealing with your child and their education. Because we have been out of school for so long we as adults forget how in essence the educational curriculum is really not designed to enhance the identity and self esteem of children of color. White Children will never have to deal with the confusion Black Children have to come to terms with when they are tought for the 1st time that their people were slaves and treated in such inhumane ways. Families sold off, forbidden to learn, and calling other human beings master. I believe a totally breakdown of the educational curriculum is needed and until then we need books like Dr. Winbush to give us guidance and understanding to raise our Black Boys. We are in the midst of a crisis and we have to save our children. Thank you Dr. Winbush. Amazing book!!! I think for single mothers. this would be a wonderful book to read in raising and dealing with solutions to help guide your Black sons.
Must read for those concerned about 'Black Boys'.......2003-01-26
The author is excellent and deserves recognition. The book serves as an excellent guide to establishing a structured program to navigate boys to men and men to heroes
A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY AFRICAN AMERICAN PARENT.......2002-04-04
PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST HELPFULL BOOKS FOR BLACK PARENTS GOING INTO THIS MILLENIUM. THE WARRIOR METHOD GIVES YOU A GREAT PROGRAM FOR RAISING STRONG, HEALTHY, CONSCIENCE, & SUCCESSFUL YOUNG BLACK MEN. WE DON'T USUALLY LEARN ANY METHODS OF RAISING OUR KIDS IN SCHOOL, WORK, OR OTHER PLACES THAT WE SPEND A LOT OF OUR TIME. MOST NEVER EVEN CONSIDER OR KNOW ANY OTHER WAYS OF REARING OUR KIDS OTHER THAN THE WAYS SOCIETY TELLS US TO, AND THAT IS NOT ALWAYS THE WAY THAT WORKS BEST FOR US. THE WARRIOR METHOD GIVES A STRONG ALTERNATIVE REARING METHOD THAT ADDRESSES THE NEEDS OF OUR KIDS IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. EVERY BLACK PARENT SHOULD TAKE TIME OUT TO READ AND CONSIDER THE WARRIOR METHOD. THE READING LIST THAT IS SUGGESTED FOR THE PARENTS WILL TREMENDOUSLY BENEFIT YOU ALSO. CHECK IT OUT AND/OR GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO NEW PARENTS, FRIENDS, AND FAMILY.
A Timely Guide for Parents of Black Children.......2002-03-03
The Warrior Method is an excellent tool for parents raising black children. While it focuses on Black boys, the book provides meaningful strategies for parents raising Black Children in an environment which places them at the margin of society. Dr. Winbush's ten commandments for raising healthy black boys ought not to be ignored. His practical advice to parents represent a significant gift to Black families worldwide.
A must have for parents!!
A Must Read.......2002-03-01
This is a must read for anyone raising a black male in our "society". It is long overdue and I wish it had been available to me years ago. It is enlightening and thought-provoking.
