Customer Reviews:
A Great Knitting Reference Book.......2007-08-21
I was lucky enough to find this book in a library sale, and I love it. It has expanded my knowledge of knitting as well as the possibilities of knit wear. It has charts as well as written directions for patterns, which is a great help for those of us who are visual learners. Even as a novice knitter, I found it easy to use and understand. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to design their own patterns.
THE Standby Reference.......2007-01-10
Mary Thomas is one of the best all around knitting references there is. Her first book, Mary Thomas' Knitting Book, approaches every angle of knitting from a practical and sensible point of view. She doesn't raise knitting to an art form, as so many of today's popular knitting mavens try to do, but approaches it from the practical level of a craft, as it should be, in my opinion.
In this, her second book, the reader is given loads of stitch patterns and suggestions on how to use many of them. Practically everything Nicky Epstein put in her books is an adaptation of something in Mary Thomas' in one form or another. Just goes to show you, there's nothing new under the sun! Certainly, this book isn't as all encompassing as Barbara Walker's Treasury volumes, but for such a small book, the reader is given a most far reaching and complete treatment of nearly every kind of knitted fabric from solid fabrics to lace, motifs to medallions, and practical and amazingly complete instruction on designing your own garments and other projects. The "By The Way" chapter at the end gives a lot of the signature Mary Thomas historical information on knitting tools, knitting humor, transcribing a pattern, and caring for your woolens. The book is sprinkled throughout with factual historical gems and trivia that make Mary Thomas so readable and enjoyable.
Because I learned to read charts from Mary Thomas' books, I think they are easy to follow, but the symbols are different than most knitting books on the market today. The key provided for the symbols is self explanatory and simple enough that even a beginner can catch on quickly with a little work and attention.
If I had only two knitting books in my library, they would both be by Mary Thomas. Under her instruction, I learned to knit socks, gloves, mittens, and made my first original (or so I thought at the time) sweater pattern. I recently had to buy a new copy to replace my mother's worn and falling apart copy. I keep both of this author's books close at hand. I own a lot of knitting books, many of them very expensive, but very few are as helpful and complete as the Mary Thomas books.
Wonderful Illustrated knitting patterns.......2006-07-14
A must have for your knitting library collection.
320 fully packed pages of fully illustrated knitting patterns.
As per description, " Special attention is given throughout to explaining the how and why of each pattern...." , and yes, by descriptions of why and how, you have a reason to pick out specific patterns for your project.
"The illustrations in this book are arranged to present a progessive, pictorial story of knitted patterns, to be first enjoyed by turning the pages and watching the designs grow from simple to greater elaboration."
This is a wonderful, soft cover, easy to leaf through book, has excellent pictures, black and white, and great explanations of charting.
In Mary Thomas' words, There is no work more ingenious than Knitting and that is why it has lasted so many centuries.
So go for it, and enjoy this book.
Mary Thomas's Jewel of a Book.......2006-05-27
This small black and white book from the World War II era is a reminder of a time when most women had a higher literacy in the skills of knitting, sewing, and clothing alterations. It lacks a lot of handholding, has no color plates, but makes up for it in the intelligent approach to knitting stitch presentation.
It may be great for some beginners who are familiar with textile arts if not knitting, yet other beginners will be confused with the brevity of the instructions and the lack of color photos and projects to replicate.
It is my absolute favorite knitting book, because it explains the techniques for developing stitches systematically. Every time I learn something new from this small and unassuming book.
If you understand the most basic stitch, then you can see the steps that lead to creating new stitches, or more elaborate laces from the lowly yarn over. The small drawings of stitch samples are accurate and detailed.
Both charts and word instructions are given for many stitches.
Recommended for intermediate or better knitters as a learning expanding reference with few words, or a historic artifact to look through for students of knitting.
A delightful classic.......2006-03-03
As a beginning knitter, I take great joy in this book. Sure, I can't do an eighth of it yet, and most of it is Greek to me, but I dream of the days when I, too, can churn out yards of Brioche stitch -- ah! Most of crafting is anticipation, and I'm at fever pitch about my future knitting, thanks to Mary Thomas.

Mary Thomas's Knitting Book.......2007-04-11
This is an old book with beautiful instructions to try some wonderful stitches that are not found in most new books on knitting.
The MOST Comprehensive Knitting Book .......2007-02-22
I've taken my time between receiving the book and writing this review. This book has so much going for it I didn't know where to start. This is so information packed with techniques that I thought were "new" such as knitting with beads, looped knitting and felting.
I know how tempting those big books with all the beautiful color pictures are but you'd pay three, four or five times as much as you would for this little gem. It provides a surprisingly interesting chapter on the history of knitting.
It has an old-fashioned feel to it that is totally charming as are the illustrations which give the eye a rest among all the info provided. I purchased it mostly because I need techniques for Fair Isle knitting, and the book provides very good info on this.
Deserves to be in every knitters library no matter how hip you may be.
A great basic!.......2006-11-08
I have a bookshelf of knitting books, and after reading over and over about Mary Thomas and her books, I finally broke down and purchased them. Wow! Am I impressed! She did an amazingly thorough job of writing, and of illustrating her volumes. Treat yourself to this classic:-) and its companion volume.
Mary Thomas's Knitting Book.......2006-09-21
A must have knitting book. Mary Thomas, Barbara G. Walker, Elizabeth Zimmermann's and Barbara Abbey's books are all must have books for any serious knitter. You can't go wrong purchasing any of their books. Don't pass up this little gem of knowledge.
Although an old book still very useful.......2006-03-03
I was surprised to find in this book many of the things that appear in newer how-to knitting books eg the spiral sock that is on page 229, 230. And this not the only material that you will see that's in other books. In this book the material is in a rather condensed form. In the newer books it appears with color photographs and modernized. But still I find this a good book and especially at this price you can see where it all begun.

Jim Cootes knows orchids so well that two species have been named after him. The author notes in his stunning Orchids of the Philippines reveal that he has even found a pure white flower, rare as a snow leopard: "An albino form of Dendrobium fairchildiae." This volume consists of an exhaustive and hypnotic listing of over 300 species of orchids--plants native to the archipelago, which have been discovered and classified by Cootes and others over decades of research.
Each entry includes a vivid color photograph and a series of subcategories, including growth habits, petals, habitat, and distribution. The roots of botanical names are traced for descriptive meanings. Occasional notes allow the author's voice into the proceedings, and the prose is often inadvertently poetic, as in this description of the habitat of the Bulbophyllum antenniferum: "It normally grows as an epiphyte, usually on the trunks of trees, but has been observed by the author growing on rocks in dappled light." Orchid enthusiasts beware: most of the plants shown here can only be grown in greenhouses. --Emily White
Book Description
This book is an excellent blend of information for serious orchid growers as well as orchid enthusiasts who may have plants of Philippine origin in their collections. It documents both the popular, well-known species and those of botanical interest in a format designed to aid in identifying species found in collections. Descriptions are accompanied by more than 300 color photos.

An excellent, albeit heavy, book set on Philippine Orchids.......2001-05-24
This large and heavy two-volume set is the largest and most complete reference that I know of dealing with Philippine orchids. It was published in Pasig, Metro Manila in 1984 by the Eugenio Lopez Foundation Inc. The set weighs in at a hefty 17 pounds and measures 14" x 10.5" x 3" in the slipcase.
Volume 1 (360 p.) features predominantly text, but contains a a few photos and a lot of line drawings. There are six chapters, three appendices, a bibliography and index. Chapter 1: About Orchids (p.1-6); Ch. 2: History (p. 7-14) and A Folio of Botanical Paintings and Drawings (p.15-49; very lovely); Ch. 3: Geography and Climate (p. 49-57); Ch. 4: Endemism and Distribution of Philippine Orchids (p. 57-77); Ch. 5: Orchid classification (p. 77-83); Ch. 6: Philippine Orchidaceae (p. 83-328); Appendix 1: Orchid Authorities (useful list); App. 2: Changes in Nomenclature; App. 3: Glossary. The Geography and Climate chapter (3) includes maps of Soil Cover, Climate, Humidity, Rainfall, and Temperature. The maps in Chapter four are very pretty, each two full pages, and they include Distribution of Aerides,Vanda, Trichoglottis & Renanthera in Southeast Asia and the Philippines; Bulbophyllum; Dendrobium; Eria; Phalaenopsis; and the Southeast Asian Region Showing the Asiatic and Australian Continental Shelves with Wallace's and Weber's Lines. Individual species descriptions in Chapter 6 comprise the bulk of Volume one. There are four to five species on each page, with plant description and measurements, original publication information, locality and altitude. A very attractive feature of this volume are the large, stylized, dropped/descending initials with orchid background motifs, used in the text section headings, Index, and Bibliography.
Volume 2 features 260 full-page color plates, two appendices and an acknowledgements section. Appendix 1 covers the Flowering Seasons of Philippine Orchids (p. 253-310); Appendix 2 provides columnar tables of the Distribution of Philippine Orchids (p. 311-374). The photos include 21 Aerides, 38 Dendrobiums, 61 Phalaenopsis, and 10 Trichoglottis, and 31 Vandas. Other genera are represented by fewer than 10 photos each, giving you an idea of the variety of Philippine orchids. Many of these photos are truly stunning anlarger than life-size. In particular, there are several two-page photos, such as Trichoglottis brachiata, Vanda Merrillii and Vanda Sanderiana. The distribution tables identify the altititude range, general location of the species in Luzon, Visayas, Palawan or Mindano, and occurences in any foreign countries.
Available for US$358 from Koeltz Scientific Books in Germany, or US$250. from Tecson Orchids in the Philippines (plus postage).
This review is published in the monthly newsletter of the Houston Orchid Society, Houston Happenings. The Houston Orchid Society is sponsoring a workshop on Philippine Orchids, 3-4 August 2001. See our website for details: ...

Book Description
Children have plenty of buddies. In an age when kids all around us are growing up without strong, positive guidance from their parents (who are busy, distracted, gone, or choose to be buddies instead of parents) children need someone they can look to with respect to help them build their lives.
When he was thirteen years old, Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, had such a man step into his life: a Sunday school teacher who modeled love, respect, hard work, and discipline. Cathy decided to follow that model, and today he has some 130 foster grandchildren, many of whom have broken their family's generational cycle of neglect through the encouragement of Cathy and other adults who reached out to them.
In It's Better to Build Boys Than Mend Men, Truett Cathy lays out a simple model for adults desiring to reach out to youth and challenges readers to allow God to work through them to change the life of a child. His book is filled with stories illustrating the principles of discipline, trust, reputation, generosity, common sense, peer pressure, and family stability.
Readers who follow their hearts into children's lives will find that their own lives are enriched as well.
Customer Reviews:
Great Gift for Father's Day --- And Every Day.......2007-06-12
Truett Cathy is one of those people who changes the lives all around him. Instead of giving advice and moving on, Truett has "lived the story" and literally made a difference in thousands of people's lives.
In this short, wise book, the founder of Chick-Fil-A shows us the value of mentoring and the high worth of fathers. A great gift for Father's Day, but a wonderful addition to any library on any occasion.
There's a lot of wisdom here: this book is inspiring and filled with hope!

Raising young boys to be young men - wisdom for the journey.......2007-01-18
Truett Cathy, founder of the Chick-fil-A empire, shares a wealth of experience and wisdom in this little gem of a book. Using Proverbs chapter 22 as his inspiration, Cathy writes about how young men need the guidance of an older man in their lives to put them on the right path. Cathy has been teaching a Sunday school class for young boys (age 13) for the past few decades and also has his WinShape program that provides a home, love and an opportunity to countless young boys needing direction and discipline in their lives. From this long history of helping young boys become young men, Cathy draws some basic principles for putting boys on the right path in life.
The first admonition that Cathy shares is that a boy needs a father in the home - present, engaged and caring. He follows with wisdom how to train a young boy into a young man through words of encouragement, modeling the example for them to see, and giving them opportunities to learn life lessons on their own. Cathy talks about the importance of teaching young men how to handle money as well as how to pick the right life-mate.
The book is short, easy-to-read, and packed full of practical wisdom and heart-touching stories from Cathy's own life and experience. This would be a wonderful gift for any father raising sons. Cathy is a Christian and his values and beliefs are grounded in God's Word and this comes across with simple clarity in the book, just like it does in the management of his billion dollar company.
The bottom line.......2006-11-03
Much more than inspiration - a message of hope to many, and a call to action. Whether in his public speaking or his private life Mr. Cathy is an American treasure and this book speaks to real success that is not illusive.
Best book I have ever read.......2006-05-04
This book is so inspirational and motivational. It is by far, the best book I have ever read. Very easy to read.
Great buy.
A Stitch In Time--.......2006-03-19
This is a great book. Being a good parent when your son is little is a whole lot easier than trying to make up for it after he has grown up. Don't try to be a friend to your son. The friendship will, undoubtedly, come later. Be a courageous parent! Art Linkletter learned this lesson the hard way.
