First pets have always been popular, including such notables as FDR's Scottish terrier, Fala; Caroline Kennedy's pony, Macaroni; and Amy Carter's cat, Misty. President Clinton's cat, Socks, and his chocolate Labrador, Buddy, have also managed to attract quite a few fans since landing in the White House, the majority being curious children who have lots of interesting questions and aren't shy about sharing! In Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids' Letters to the First Pets, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton gathers together more than 80 full-color photographs of the dynamic duo and 50 letters to them from kids across the United States and offers answers to their most-often-asked questions. From "Socks Stats" and a "Buddy Bio" to a FAQ page for each, and "Socks and Buddy's Guide to Good Pet Care," children will be delighted with the generous information provided on two of their favorite pets, as well as the "pet history" of the White House and a look into how letters to Socks and Buddy are received, sorted, and answered at the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home. Clinton, who is donating all of the author proceeds from the sale of this book to the National Park Foundation, also devotes a chapter to suggesting numerous ways that "parents can help their children initiate and enjoy the experience of writing and receiving letters," making this a treasure for both parents and children alike.
Book Description
In a world dominated by video games, voice mail, and television, it's easy to overlook the importance of the written word. If one very important thing parents can do to help their children learn is read to them, then encouraging them to write must run a close second. What better -- and more rewarding -- way to teach a child these invaluable communication skills than through letter writing?
In her warm and engaging text, Mrs. Clinton suggests ways parents can help their children initiate and enjoy the experience of writing and receiving letters, sharing her family's (and pets') experience, and explains how letters to Socks and Buddy are received, sorted, and answered at the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home. Mrs. Clinton gives a brief "pet history" of the White House, from Dolley Madison's parrot and Teddy Roosevelt's children's menagerie to the Bushes' English springer spaniel Millie. She also talks about the ways Socks and Buddy participate in White House life, such as greeting guests and visiting hospitals and nursing homes. Fans of the First Pets will be delighted by a section on their vital statistics (Socks' tail length: 1 foot; Buddy's snout length: 5 inches) and answers to the questions most asked by correspondents ("Do you have room service?").
In Dear Socks, Dear Buddy, Mrs. Clinton also shares more than fifty letters children have sent the nation's First Pets, from a simple request for a "paw-tograph" to more exacting notes of good wishes ("I want to give you a big heart, as big as the whole world") and generous advice ("Just because they went on a trip and didn't take you doesn't mean they don't love you any more"). Illustrated with more than eighty photographs of Socks and Buddy on the job and at play in the White House, this book will inspire children to share their ideas and wishes through writing.
Customer Reviews:
fun book to read to and with children.......2004-02-10
A book for all dog and cat owners. I liked the way she organized the photographs between the children's letters. Some of the children's letters had drawings that my grandchildren enjoyed. I thought Buddy's Bio and Socks Stats where clever, and we tried the same idea to describe other pets. My children grew up with pets, but my grandchildren do not have room for pets. So we read this book about Buddy and Socks whenever they want to know more about having pets. Usually it leads to drawing a picture or writing a story afterwards.
Best Friends.......2003-12-24
The President and First Lady's book shows the unconditional love and understanding between humans and our best friends.
The childrens' curiosity and interest shown in their letters serves as a valuable source of inspiration and learning for young and old alike.
Great book!.......2003-07-04
What a fun way to see inside the lives of the first pets. Well-written, with lots of cute photos and interesting information.
Woof Woof.......2003-02-24
In this predictable knockoff of the Presidential pet book series pioneered by several Republican administrations, Diet Roosevelt's cat and dog ("Socks" and "Buddy," respectively) are hagiographically profiled. Author Lady Diet Roosevelt relies largely on letters purloined from a swarm of unsuspecting child correspondents for the body of the text, much as her husband's administration largely appropriated the watered-down policies of his predecessors in running the nation (even his philandering was a watered-down take on Camelot days!). Intelligent Diet Roosevelt watchers who buy this book hoping for hidden political insights should look elsewhere, as this is a fairly straightforward profile of the first pets, targeted solely at small children and Democrats. The one curious exception to this is the unconfirmed rumor - suspiciously unrefuted in this volume - that the Kremlin's most popular occupants in Lenin's day were his cat and dog Ïðèÿòåëü and Íîñêîâ - Russian for Socks and Buddy, respectively. Coincidence?
Good intro.......2001-06-03
"Dear Socks, Dear Buddy" is a cute photo album and collection of letters sent to the former First Cat and Dog. It's a great way to introduce young children to politics without using the word impeachment....

This book is beautiful and practical. It inspires its readers to get creative with their homes and their wardrobes. It includes techniques like assembling a makeshift "light table"(p. 49) that would work for anyone who fancies a craft that requires tracing. Mothers of preschoolers, fathers interested in raising creative children, and pre-school or elementary school teachers. Those who teach art to adults will also find much here.

Book Description
This is a unique guide for women dealing with the difficulties of multiple sclerosis. After she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1976, author Judith Lynn Nichols realized that people suffering from chronic illness fare better when they share experiences with people fighting the same disease. While researching MS on the Internet, she connected with a group of women fighting to live with MS. The group quickly became each woman's support network, and, in the daily emails compiled in this book, they offered each other wisdom and humor about everything this disorder affects: diagnosis, employment, spirituality, family reactions, sexuality, pain control, depression, and more.

A must read Bible for women and MS.......2007-09-27
This book is so much for people who are struggling with MS. It is as the writers were portraying myself because I also have MS and each chapter is a vivid moment of what we go through.
This is a helpfull tool as the world does not understand MS, only if they know someone who suffers from it or it is even you who has it.
Great read and one to keep as a Bible because there are other people living like you and if they can still laugh about it, so can you.
Women Living With MS & Living Beyond MS .......2007-08-23
I happened upon these books while browsing through my local bookstore, and as a newly diagnosed (1/03/07) victim of MS, I found them to be more helpful than most of the reading material that my Neurologist had given to me. J.L. and the women in these books had become my friends and mentors; sharing and answering many of the questions and concerns I had. I am very grateful to J. L. Nichols and my new "MS sisters" for helping to make me laugh through my fears and pain.
Helps Family Understand.......2007-06-29
My daughter has multiple sclerosis and I try my best to be there to support her and help whenever I can. This book helped me understand much more fully what she's going through. It also helps me more fully understand my son-in-law's and grandchildren's deeper concerns too. It's hard to put all of it in words I am sure but the women in this book really gave me a "bigger" picture and deeper understanding. It helped me a lot. Their stories made me cry and yet there were many times that their remarkable humor made me laugh aloud. It's a great book. I'll be sharing it with many members of my family.
Great Read.......2005-08-02
Found the content excellent, and relevant. Found myself laughing at some of the descriptions, especially where I had had similar experiences.
Was good to read about issues from a down to earth point of view and share in, and pick up, some of the problem solving tips.
Was disappointed however when the whole cover fell off the book within the first few pages of reading.
I have MS and found the book boring..........2005-04-01
A bunch of "chatter" with little substance...although I am happy for the women in this book who found peace and comfort with each other through "chatting" on-line about their sufferings and living with MS...I found it non-inspiring and non-informative...

Customer Reviews:
I Agree this is a MUST READ for those touched by MS.......2002-09-03
I so enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. While there are other books out there that give more medical and scientific info on MS, this one by far does the best job of going to the heart of MS and how it effects those diagnosed and those who care about them.
Ms. Mackie's disease progress is almost exactly like my own.......2002-04-27
Carole Mackie's story of her symptoms, her diagnosis, the progress of her disease, and the things she did; projects she took upon herself to help her come to terms with her disease is one of the best'personal story' books on MS that I have read. Because the course of her disease was so similar to my own. I feel like most people with the relapseing-remitting type of the disease need to read this book. She doesn't over dramitize, or give any technical medical rundown. She is just an ordinary working young person faced suddenly, and joltingly, with a potentially, progressively debilitating disease. How she deals with it and comes to acceptance was life-reaffirming to me. She answered the question for me: where do, and will I be able to go from here?
from a mom's view.......2001-10-18
My 35-year-old daughter gave me this book. She was recently diagnosed with MS and we have read the basic information books from the MS society. These books were very informative but as with most books of this nature...very factual.
We have been leery to read other books since the unpredictable nature of this disease can be very upsetting for both patients and their families.
Carole's book was very different. It gave her story, then gave those that were close to her, the opportunity to tell their story as to how it has effected their lives as well.
a good read.......2001-10-03
I was recently diagnosed w/ MS and picked up this book because, do I dare say, the title! It really spoke to me. As I read the book the things she said were so in line with what I was experiencing, right down to her diagnosis - assuming it meant you're off to the wheelchair, questions about being able to have children, the whole nine yards. I felt like it was me in that book - and in many ways it was. Its only been a month since I was diagnosed and its hard for those around me to understand what I'm going through. Indeed, this book gave me someone to connect with. I think its a good book for the newly diagnosed. It puts things in perspective.
Disappointing.......2001-05-20
This book was a big disappointment. She just isn't a very good writer, or particularly introspective or surprising. What she IS is very concerned with herself -- she dramatizes her situation out of proportion, and is able to gather a whole team around her to support her (very mild) symptoms.Everyone she comes in contact with is immediately recruited to help take care of her! As a woman who has struggled with MS for over 15 years I have to admit I found little to instruct, comfort or inspire me in this very self-centered account.

Book Description
Janet Lee James was just twenty-three years old and just beginning a career as a rock ‘n’ roll disc-jockey when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Hoping she’d part of the vast majority who are able to lead full, productive lives relatively undisturbed by the disease, she took off alone for the wilds of Alaska, leaving home, work and family behind to live out her dream of a life filled with excitement and adventure.
Janet James’s penchant for black humor, cold beer and handsome men results in numerous outsized tales. Her story is a frank, detailed account of life with a profound disability -- a rare example of what MS can do. But through it all, she reminds us that life, regardless of its circumstances, truly is whatever we choose to make it.
Customer Reviews:
WORTH THE MONEY ...........2007-06-04
I was on the fence about buying this book due to what seemed may be mostly about MS and it's horrors . But, took a chance and am glad I did . I realize it was first published in 1993 and here it is 2007 and I just got around to it .
I was captivated by Ms. James sheer gutsiness ( is that a word ? )to leave the safety of her home and family to pursue a dream she might have otherwised put off like the rest of us do , thinking we have all the time in the world . She made me laugh , and made me shake my head at some of her antics before MS got a real hold on her . amazing adventure ..worth your time and $$$ .
the last 1/3 of the book was un-nerving tho . I'm happy I didn't read it as a young girl , i would have been looking for every symptom . I learned more about MS then i wanted to also ....all the promises to her and every patient of that time over 30 years ago ...saying a cure was probably going to be found in a few years with all the research . How sad . they are no closer to a cure now then 30 years ago .
I would have been terrified to go it alone in a state such as Alaska with no real friends waiting for me knowing that I had MS yet not knowing what to truly expect from it as being newly diagnosed and each case different.
I do have many questions tho , BUT those I wrote in a letter to her home . I hope she is still with us . In any case ...God Bless and may she find peace & happiness wherever she is .
Don't read this if you want MS sugar-coated........2003-10-30
What an excellent, excellent, excellent book and a brilliant author. The author had the courage to share the often unspeakable truths of what can happen, which doctors NEVER tell you about. She also has a warm and charming way of infusing humor and inspiration so others to gain a sense of hope and to "go for their dreams and make them happen. I can't think of a gutsier auther!
I loved it and would love to meet her!
One Particular Harbor.......2001-03-29
This book is great - positiveley the best book I've ever read. It follows the story of Janet, a woman with MS. Instantly, you feel as if Janet is an old friend. A good book for when you're feeling frustrated with the world and wishing you could do like Janet did...fly away to Alaska. A true story of adventure!
A positive, funny, honest and very in depth look at MS..........1999-11-21
I have read all sorts of books on MS--- Medical journals, personal accounts, alternative healing.. This wonderful book brought me to new heights in my understanding of the disease.. I wanted to jump on a plane to Alaska and pick up where Janet left off! I loved her bravery, her honesty and especially her sincerity. I, too, am a vagabond and traveler with MS... One of my favorite books ever on the subject!
Finally, an upbeat book regarding MS!.......1998-01-15
A gutsy, funny, sensitive young woman takes readers to Alaska where we learn to love the great state and Janet. This book is a joy for everyone and will remain with you long after the final word is read. See you at the Salty Dawg! Thanks Janet.
Book Description
Kym Orsetti Furney was a 34-year-old physician, specializing in Internal Medicine, busy with her exciting job and enjoying life with her husband and young daughter in 2000, when she suddenly began to experience dizziness repeatedly, which rapidly led to a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Her world was rocked for a time, but Furney has recovered from the shock and--empowered by information, acceptance and support--continues working as a doctor, teaching, and taking care of her family, despite the challenges of MS. For all people dealing with a personal or family diagnosis, she offers help, hope, and insights by explaining all the medical perspectives, but also reflecting on her own personal experiences after diagnosis. Never forgetting the fear and hopelessness she felt at the time she learned of her own MS, she discusses the many challenges, from depression and overcoming fear of injection medications, to how and when to tell others about having MS and understanding the impact MS may have on one's career. Readers will find a strong connection with this talented physician and the thoughts and emotions that she has had facing MS. Furney's well-researched and compassionate writing will not only empower people newly diagnosed with MS, but will give family members insight into the physical and emotional challenges for their loved one, challenges that she or he may not immediately be able to voice. This work also offers invaluable insights for healthcare professionals, psychologists, psychiatrists, physical and occupational therapists.
