very complete.......2006-12-18
I feel that this book is very complete and extremely helpful. If you own or are interested in corns pick this up because it will be helpful, also the offer lists some considerations before purchasing a corn which is great to see.
Best book of its kind.......2006-05-05
One of the most reader-friendly and authoritative books of its kind Ive ever read. Not only does this book give a solid outline of the natural history of these snakes, but it also answers (Thoroughly!) all the questions/issues that might arise in the captive care/breeding of the corn and rat snakes.
The author, Phil Purser, is an authority on these snakes whom I once had the honor of meeting at a university lecture; his name on a book about herps is a definite stamp-of-quality.
If you have to buy a corn snake book, THIS IS THE ONE!!!!

Good pictures, mediocre info.......2003-06-28
This book was OK at best. It has lots of great, colorful pictures, which is nice. It also give you a good overview of rat snakes. But some of the information in the book is inaccurate or plain incorrect. For example, the care information. The best way to hold rat snakes is NOT a choke hold. They also do NOT need full spectrum lighting. There are several other similar mistakes that I noticed. I would recommend this book for the pictures, but take the care information with a grain of salt.
Book Description
Kali's father is a snake catcher - the best in the village. Kali knows that is really something to be proud of, but at school he sometimes gets embarrassed. The other children seem to think there is something very strange about having a snake catcher for a father, and eating things like fried termites for a snack. Plus, Kali is the teacher's pet. How will he ever make friends?
Customer Reviews:
A delightful children's story about accepting differences and learning to appreciate the talents in oneself and others.......2006-09-22
Set in India, Kali And The Rat Snake is the picturebook story of a boy, Kali, who has trouble fitting in at school. He is one of the Irula, an indigenous tribal people who live in Southern India and who have traditionally made a living as snake catchers. As the son of a snake catcher, Kali feels different from the other children, a teacher's pet, and he has trouble making friends. But when a big rat snake threatens the class, only Kali knows what to do! Energetic color illustrations by Srividya Natarajan pepper this delightful children's story from Zai Whitaker about accepting differences and learning to appreciate the talents in oneself and others. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Because corn and rat snakes are brilliantly colored, harmless to humans, and do well in captivity, they have become popular reptiles to own and breed. This manual describes most subspecies found in European and American collections, including the corn snake, the many races of black rat snake, the green rat snake, the Mexican corn snake, many European rat snakes, and similar forms from Africa and Latin America. There is information on feeding, caging, breeding, and health, plus a bibliography and glossary.
Customer Reviews:
Awfully vague.......2005-11-28
I bought this book with the hopes that two specific areas would be addressed. The first area was suitable substrate for snake habitats and husbandry in general. There was virtually no discussion about this topic, other than a brief mention that Europeans like to make elaborate habitats whereas Americans typically go simple. The book does address hide boxes, lighting, heating and water needs, but I really wanted to know what materials made for the best substrate. How often does it need to be cleaned/replaced? How should you go about cleaning a replaceable substrate like calcium sand, etc. Sanitation to me is one of the most important aspects of raising a confined animal and there is no discussion of it whatsoever. Secondly, I wanted to understand the feeding process a little better. After failing to induce a young Texas Rat Snake to feed in recent weeks, I wanted to be sure I understood the fine points of feeding. This book talks about different ways to induce feeding, but it doesn't offer any signs or symptoms to look for when one must consider the last resort of force feeding. Will the herp look gaunt? Will it show any other physical signs indicating starvation is fast approaching? How long is too long to go without eating? It further mentions that sometimes snakes don't eat during the winter months even in captivity. So now I'm really at a loss. This book is a very general guide best suited probably for someone who is sitting on the fence as to whether or not to own a rat snake and has yet to decide what type one is interested in purchasing. If you have already made the decision to raise a rat snake, especially if it will be your first snake, this book is not for you. Something much more specific with regards to the two topics above will be required; otherwise, you are jeopardizing the well being of the animal at worst and at best relying on your own instincts to provide a healthy environment for the snake.
Good Book.......2005-05-23
I learned a lot from this book. Alaso I tired some of the sugestions.
Not bad...........2001-09-03
I acually bought this book for the pictures, theres some real nice ones. The info is basic and great for a person wishing to learn more about them. But for someone like my self who has been keeping ratsnakes for 15 years, its a great picture book.
Cool, interesting, and very informative book........1999-05-30
This book has every bit of information pet owners are looking for. There are great colour photos, and each page has a detailed scetch. If you are studying the history of corn or rat snakes, or you just plain like snakes, this book is right for you

From the author: Information is lacking on predation of adult Golden-cheeked Warblers (Dendroica chrysoparia). Using time lapse video equipment at Fort Hood, Texas, I documented a Great Plains rat snake (Elaphe guttata emoryi) depredating a female Golden-cheeked Warbler on a nest. The predation took place on the night of 22-23 April 2000 while the adult warbler was sleeping on four eggs. Although adult mortality by predators probably occurs infrequently, the climbing ability and nocturnal foraging of rat snakes may enhance opportunities of capturing adult birds.

Book Description
We've been over-run with child-rearing manuals for infants. We've been swamped with advice for relating to teens. But little has been offered to parents whose children are in middle childhood! John. M. Drescher, a wise voice in the field of parenting literature (whose books have sold more than 400,000 copies), addresses particular delights and difficulties of this stage in a child's life.
Customer Reviews:
has a religious slant and it's very simplistic.......2006-05-13
This book takes a long time to tell parents the obvious fact that they should spend a lot of time with their 6 to 12s, doing fun activities, as well as really communicating with them, because as we all know after age 12, children are a lot less likely to listen to their parents.
Also, there is a little religion along the way, which, as an agnostic, I didn't like very much.
This book affirms everything I believe in as a parent and now I know why.......2005-11-01
I have a stack of mostly-unread parenting books, the majority are on preschoolers, and as a mother of a 10 year old, well, it's too late for that. (The ones I did read were pretty forgettable anyway.) Then when I saw this book, and how small it was and therefore not too time-consuming to read, as well as its relevance to me now since my own child has two years left in this age bracket, I decided to give this book a go. I say "give it a go" because I have no tolerance for rubbish, especially self-help rubbish, and if any book reveals itself to be so inclined, I'm over it quickly.
But this book was different. Extremely readable. Practical. Clear. And contemporary, as in very relevant for today, even though it was written 12 years ago. (I don't know where you live, but where I live, I see lots of very unhappy children who seem to be unlikely to be able to cope with civilisation, in all senses of the word.) All parents should read this book and be it because it's about beginning with the end in mind, which is to raise children at the right speed (slowly) with authority and boundaries (of the loving kind) so that children will feel secure and loved as children, and grow to be the kind of adults that the world needs: dependable and valuable and with values.
To acheive this end, it explains how parents need to be, including of course "being" with their children. Which has nothing to do with the modern concept of "Quality Time".
I also found the Christian references useful and if anyone has a problem with that, they should try and overcome it, because they provide a further useful take on parenting.
I would recommend this book to everyone. It beats watching a parenting show on TV. This book has it all for this agegroup and I will be looking out for others by this author. But this book is truly a celebration of parenting When Your Child Is 6 to 12.
an eye opener!.......1999-02-05
This is by far the best book on parenting I've ever read! I stumbled upon it in an old used bookstore and haven't been the same since.
Concise, easy to read and enjoyable, each page is filled with gems. My wife and I were having difficulty with getting the kids to bed. In 3 or 4 sentences we learned why and how to solve the problem.
I have since returned all the books on parenting(100's) and keep this book on my nighttable.
