5 out of 5 stars This book is a great introduction to the world of Corydoras........1997-09-18

If you have ever wondered about the Corydora and other related fish, this book will help you understand what makes them so unique. It was key in helping me understand the spawning habits of my albino c. aeneus. If you are new to raising these reticulated catfish, this book is a must have for your aquarium library

5 out of 5 stars Still an Important Book.......2007-04-18

This book has been out for a long time, but remains and important reference for anyone who wants to make a quilt with complicated piecing. Her technique LOOKS complicated, but is actually easy once you study the basics. It's a definite MUST HAVE for any quilter's library. My skill at piecing intricate curves, points and seams increased substantially after working with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Piecing: Expanding the Basics.......2005-10-29

This is a wonderful book. It really helped to unleash my creativity. I have been gathering fabrics ever since my first glance at this book, to put together my new masterpiece. I am really excited about trying some of the techniques. I don't have time to write anymore...I have to get started on my new project!!! Lynne

5 out of 5 stars An Expert at Work.......2004-08-13

I borrowed this book from the library after seeing a quilt my aunt made after attending a class taught by Ruth Mcdowell. Ruth is an amazingly talented artist, and for her to even compile and explain her techniques to us...wow! I can honestly say that I am overwhelmed and more nervous than even to try and learn how to piece like she does. But the book is definitely inspiring and one I can look at over and over again. The book is set up in such a way to be a step-by-step, hands on guide. The quilts featured in the book are fabulous and mind-boggling. This book is not for beginners to sew from, but for quilters to dream from!

4 out of 5 stars interesting piecing.......2004-02-03

I liked this book and the wonderful ways in which the author was able to transform a picture into a quilt. All her techniques to this approach were wonderful.

However if found that there was just too many pieces going on in some of the quilts for me. I appreciated knowing how she accomplished what she did and was inspired by her work...i think i will work with a few less pieces...

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 if I could..........2003-07-16

This is a book that stands alone. I was reluctant to purchase it because it only had 2 reviews, but all I can say is WOW! The sheer artistry alone is worth the price of the book. I cannot explain in words the beauty and life, as well as likeness of the subject, that the pieces in this book depict. I have not yet been able to use the techniques as I have just purchased it and am a beginning quilter as well. There is no doubt, however, that it will be nothing less than everything you need to know about expanding the basics of piecing. I am highly confident this book will teach me so much. Even if I weren't planning on quilting, which I am, I would still buy this book for its aesthetics.

4 out of 5 stars Great History Through Photo Analysis.......2007-09-06

This is a great volume for studying military history. The THEN AND NOW books draw photos and motion picture stills from numerous sources. The best part is that you are never lacking photographs of the battle posted along with contemporary shots. As such, this series serves as a great tour guide.

I own several of the THEN AND NOW SERIES of books. I came across my first example while at the Staff School at Fort Leavenworth in 1992. I ended up special ordering THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE: THEN AND NOW upon my return to Germany. Shortly thereafter I drove out to the Ardennes with a couple military buddies and toured the battlefield. I was also very fortunate to tour the area around Nijmegen and Arnhem several times, but OPERATION MARKET GARDEN: THEN AND NOW was not available then. What I did have was a copy of AFTER THE BATTLE covering the "Then and Now" aspect of the campaign. The bonus was that the magazine also included photos and information on the making of the motion picture A BRIDGE TOO FAR. Therefore I was happy to discover that a full treatment of the battle was available in the THEN AND NOW series. Thus far the first volume of MARKET GARDEN is has not been a disappointment.

My solitary regret about this book is that it is actually a two-volume set and only volume one (though it was not listed as a "volume") was advertised for sale. As such the historical timeline only covers half of Operation Market Garden. Traditionally with THEN AND NOW books available as two-volume sets the second volume is the more important half of the collection. I discovered this with D-DAY: THEN AND NOW. The first volumes have important information to be sure in that they set the stage for the battle. You are treated to background information on the forces involved, photos and accompanying captions of airlift airfields, and so on. This is not to say that the first volume of OPERATION MARKET GARDEN does not cover landing zones and initial drop zone activities. The book does cover the intial operations up to the liberation of Eindhoven. Volume 1 then ends with British 1st Airborne Division's Commander General Urquhart stranded in the attic of a Dutch home. Serious military history amateurs, like me, all know the story of A BRIDGE TOO FAR from books and film. Indeed I had the priviledge to stand on the street in front of the actual home where the General was temporarily stranded. I was just disappointed to conclude Volume One with such a cliff hanger with Volume Two nowhere to be easily found. After some searching I found that the second volume was available on the U.K and Canadian sites, but definitely not within the U.S. location.

Yes, I will definitely get the Second Volume some day. I am hopeful that it becomes available on the U.S. site.

    Book Description

Most people, specialists or not, typically think of New York City or Boston when considering the early development of parks and open spaces in American cities. Despite the size and importance of the Chicago park system, its history is less well known-even to many of those Chicagoans who regularly enjoy its facilities.

City in a Garden, developed in association with the Chicago Park District itself, changes that: its 184 large--format pages, packed with 140 images and a closely integrated text, provide the first official documentary chronicle of Chicago's parks. Thirty-one of the city's finest spaces are profiled, using photographs--both contemporary and historical-along with detailed vignettes and captions to trace their development. The visual treat of the book's fine-art duotones combines with its emphasis on narrative history to create a rich and magnificent exploration of a city's most beautiful sites.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and practical.......2003-11-14

This a very valuable introduction to the topic. The writer doesn't spend a lot of time on technical stuff although he briefly outlines equipment needed ,lenses, camera formats, types of film and accessories. Then he moves quickly to the real meat of the topic - flowers, close-ups, gardens, trees, large vistas, indoor photography etc.

He is the ideal person to write a book on flower and garden photography as his work has appeared in some of the finest magazines, in calendars, greeting cards and art posters. He has lectured at some of the most prestigious art museums in the U.S. He has over 150,000 stock images, but best of all the man can write. He understands what a newcomer to the hobby might want to know and he lays it all out for the reader logically, readably and illustrated with his own superb photographs. There's plenty of sound advice along with the tips of the trade for getting more interesting and higher quality shots.

For photographers wanting to sell their garden photographs the writer explains what editors are looking for and how to present and market your photographs. He even gives you sample model releases and authorization for publication.

I can highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their garden and flower photography.

This book is very easy to follow and gives a great deal of information about the different aspects of photographing both individual flowers and floral scenes. I was impressed with the detail in such a short book. The author gets right to the point and specifics that make good pictures. I would reccomend this to other gardeners who have trouble producing pictures to reflect how the plant really looks. I am buying another copy for a dear friend.

The authors of this monumental work have attempted nothing less than a one-volume visual history of world gardening, from Babylon to Bi Shu Zhan Zhuang, with many fascinating digressions in between. The several hundred beautiful color photographs are accompanied by long, authoritative captions, while the chronological unfolding of Western gardening is interleaved with sections on Chinese and Japanese gardens, "Borrowed Landscapes," and other cross-cultural themes. The result is not just a summation of gardening through the ages but a complex and involving examination of the ways in which humans have transformed their landscapes for pleasure and utility. The book can be leafed through casually many times or read as a narrative. It is probably unmatched as a single-volume visual history.

      Book Description

Here is a lavishly illustrated tour through the history of gardening--from ancient Rome and China to 20th century California. Throughout this tour through history are sections on garden details, such as fountains and statuary, illustrating the diverse gardening traditions from all periods. A perfect gift for the traveler or gardener, the book features over 900 color photographs.

PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF OLD VIRGINIA HOMES AND GARDENS was recently purchased by my brother at a used book sale and given to me. The copyright date is 1953 and this is truly a rare and unique find.

This is a small book with 67 black and white photographs of "the grand old homes of Virginia the Beautiful." F. Meredith Dietz, begins by writing a charming introduction where she talks about the great men and women who lived in these stately homes, and how their very character and culture is reflected in the thoughtful details of their buildings and gardens. She says, "Through the rooms and along the garden paths, the shadows of all of those who have gone before, guide us and show us more intimately than any biographers, the environments that influenced them."

Here are a few of the illustrations: Berry Hill, Halifax County; Carter Hall, Clark County; Carter's Grove, James City County; Fairfield, Clarke County; Morven, Albemarle County; Oak Hill, Loudoun County; Oatlands, Loudoun County; Redlands, Albemarle County; Shirley, Charles City County; Sabine Hall, Richmond County; Stratford, Westmoreland County and Woodlawn, Fairfax County.

Today, we're more used to seeing color photographs, and our cameras are much better; however, this book has its own charm and appears to be the loving work of the author. The old black and white pictures are great, and fifty years later, still wonderful to see.

          3 out of 5 stars Very Basic.......2006-11-07

Its a very basic overview of Ayurveda which is exactly what it claimed to be. It seems that knowing your own dosha before hand would have been a good idea.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Ayurveda I've ever read.......2006-08-19

I picked up Essential Ayurveda on a whim at a natural foods store when I was really looking for something else. What attracted me was the simple recipes and the pleasant, conversational voice of the author. When I began reading it at home, I was so glad I had trusted my instincts! I have been interested in Ayurvedic diet for many years but felt it was complicated and hard to prepare. But this author shows how simple it can be--and very clearly illustrates how the loving, respectful, harmonic way of living with and caring for yourself flows through all of life--not just diet. A wonderful book. I think it's the last book I'll ever need in order to understand Ayurveda better. I also already have "Heaven's Banquet," which the author recommends as a great source for balanced and healing recipes. Now I'll go back to that book with new eyes!

          5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2006-08-15

This book is a very basic, very essential introduction to Ayurveda. It is very well organised into the different segment of life (foods, exercise, beauty, mental well-being etc), but the style is narative, it takes you along as if on a journey. At one point you will find yourself in an Indian kitchen, smelling the spices and the vegetables, and imagining the colours, sounds and the surroundings of an Indian family eating breakfast. I've implemented almost to the letter and sometimes with scepticism the advice of the author and after 6 weeks, our life (family of 6 with baby and small children) has truly changed and improved in all spheres (physical health, happiness, pleasure in smaller things, less materialistic etc). Now we are ready for more books and research on the subject, the book is a great spring board for it.

5 out of 5 stars Basic, but Terrific.......2005-10-12

I don't agree with the reviewer who says this book is too basic, and not for those who want 'more'. Of course it isn't, because it never claims to be! This book is meant to be a simple introduction to Ayurveda, and does a wonderful job of doing that.

I would go as far as to say that this book can change your life, because it underlines, emphasizes and stresses on one and only one aspect of Ayurveda: its simplicity as a way of life. The author succeeds in making you believe that you can actually do something about your well-being, even if you belong to the rush-rush fraternity of today.

5 out of 5 stars A very simple but essential book........2005-09-18

I especially liked this book for the simple but essential recipes. The author is easygoing, but not boring. I must also thank her for mentioning Maharishi Ayurveda, as I purchased a lotion from this company and was very impressed by the high quality of the ingredients and the performance of the product. This book may be basic for those who know a lot about ayurveda, so I would recommend it moreso for beginners.
