Book Description
Widely known for her innovative teaching philosophy stressing body awareness, the value of "soft eyes," proper breathing, centering, and balance, Sally Swift has been a pioneering riding instructor for half a century. In book form for the first time, her methods enable horse and rider to achieve harmony, working together naturally, without pain.
Unlike traditional teachers, Sally Swift does not believe in forced training techniques that cause stiff bodies and tense riding. Instead, through the use of vivid, unusual, and highly creative images that transcend mechanics ("Pretend you're a spruce tree; the roots grow down from your center as the trunk grows up"), plus a thorough knowledge of human and equine anatomy, this wise and inspiring teacher enables the conscientious equestrian to reassess habitual responses, in order to ride in natural positions, break through frustrating plateaus, and achieve ever-rising goals with comfort, vitality, and precision.
Precise illustrations and photographs never before used in riding books explain anatomy and image work to give mind and body new and relaxed approaches to the inner process of riding.
Centered Riding is for those with little experience all the way up to world class.
Customer Reviews:
Literally the breakthrough I needed.......2007-05-20
I read this book 20 years ago, while trying to learn to ride as an awkward adult. I was getting so frustrated, I couldn't find my seat and felt totally out of control in the saddle. My husband kept offering counter-productive "tips" such as, "squeeze with your legs" (to sit the trot)....All I can say is, thank Heaven for Sally Swift. Her metaphors and mental imagery were exactly what I needed. Someone with natural athletic balance would perhaps not need this (someone like my husband, who rode before he walked). However, for someone like me who has to learn it from the head down, not from the seat up, this book can be the key to a secure and comfortable seat. It is in every library, read it, then buy it if this style of teaching "speaks" to you.
A 94 year old star with great heart.......2007-05-06
Having had the priveldge of working with Sally Swift I am stuck not only by her skill , but by her kind and gentle way of dealing with everyone and everything she comes in contact with. At 94 years old when most people are seeing their lives as over, Sally sees the future as being bright. She was just honored by the United States Dressage Federation as being one of the top writers and riders in the country and I say" Way to go Sally". Her books Centereed Riding and Centered Riding 2 have together sold over 500,000 copies and have changed the lives of countless people and horses alike. Not only horse riders, but black belts, ice skaters, world class olympians, etc. Centered Riding and Centered Riding 2 are books too good to miss.
Must Have Book for Every Rider/Instructor.......2007-03-22
I participate in alot of different sports/hobbies from English/Western riding, to skiing to dog obedience/agility training to cycling and various art pursuits. If you are the type of person who ever finds yourself having difficulty following the words someone uses to express something new to you and instead find following visualization or imagery examples easier then this book will help you. For example, when I was first learning to ski countless instructors explained that I was "sitting back in my seat" or " back on my heels"... lean forward they said... "no, not like that, not from the waist, with the whole body"... finally one said "pretend you have a $100 in the front of your boot and you don't want to lose it" and Eurkeka - the light bulb went on! And so it was with riding... which is why (paraphrasing) feeling your weight in your heels like you have roots to the ground from your feet worked better for me than "keep your heels down" and so on... you get the idea. This is a great book that takes the basics and gives you some alternative ways to think about them.
Centered Riding.......2007-01-18
I was satisfied with my purchase and very pleased with the speedy service and delivery. Will continue to purchase from amazon.
A Classic that all riders need to read.......2007-01-08
If you ride, you need to read this book. So many of the modern riding techniques are based on Ms. Swift's experiences. I learned how bad my posture is and how it affects my horse when I ride. Not only did it help my riding but it helped my general posture and helps eliminate back aches. The illustrations are very enlightening.,

Book Description
For horse lovers, art lovers, and collectors of unusual, beautifully illustrated books, here is the only volume on the market to offer such a large and gorgeous array of equine art. The book is divided into eight themed chapters that explore the diverse representations of horses in art: horses depicted as our trusty companions, unstinting workers, and supporters in combat. The book charts this enduring partnership, drawing on the profusion of paintings and sculptures that feature the dignified and intelligent animal that has played so many roles in human history and culture. From the small Nisean horse of the Persian Empire to the tough and speedy mounts of the Wild West, from the winged steed Pegasus to the faithful Black Beauty, humble nags take their place alongside preening thoroughbreds as the many breeds and guises of the horse are depicted. Each chapter is introduced by a short essay, and every image is accompanied by key information on the artist, the style, and the subject of the piece. Lively quotes throughout the book add the voices of writers and poets. A biographical index of artists completes the book.

Happy I bought it........2005-07-23
This is simply a beautiful book and a must have for any horse lover. This collection of horse art is the best I've seen. It's a jewel that packs a punch and would look great in any home. This book is part of a wonderful series that includes "Zoo", "Dog", "Cat", "Sex", and "Flora". They're great as a collection!
A great book to study for equine artists.......2001-08-03
I enjoyed examining all works of art in this book to learn some techniques used by the masters, it's also a great book for ANYBODY(artist or not) who simply loves horses. It would have been nicer if it were bigger, but otherwise it's a great coffee table book.
Another little gem.......2000-10-17
In the same format as the popular books ZOO, CAT, DOG, SEX comes another overview of art and writings from ancient times to the present. Lavishly illustrated with all forms of art dealing with the Horse, author Harrison has blended academia with whimsy and the result is a treat for art and animal lovers of all ages. This is a terrific item for a gift.....

ASIL ARABIANS - ULTIMATE EQUINES in ANY language.......2000-06-29
The minute your hands touch this book, you will feel a sense of awe. Not only is it substantial, but filled with histories, full color and black and white photos and art, but it unfolds before you the kinship of the Arabian people with their family horses. The book is in English and German. This only adds to the unique qualities of the publication. There are even portraits of important Arabian horses with their bloodlines. I have spent hours pouring over it. You will find that it is hard to put down. I was thrilled to find several relatives of my own precious Arabian horses. This book should be considered a must for anyone who loves these special equines....a literary treasure superbly representing our treasured Arabian horses.

Customer Reviews:
Traditional, Classic, and Innovative Designs.......2007-09-06
This book is a design library and Folk Vests are frequently seen being proudly worn at the big knitting shows. The wide variety of stitch and construction techniques makes Folk Vests a great learning guide for the newer knitter, and experienced knitters will find designs that showcase their skills. The photos of the vests give good stitch detail. All the patterns give clear instruction and finished measurements. Minor errata have been corrected in the new printings and are also available from the publisher on the web. Highly recommended for avid knitters and students of knitting alike.
Folk Vest.......2007-08-30
Photographs of the vests are beautiful, only wish the gauges worked. I tried the Bookworm vest and ended up searching the internet for corrections. I recommend, before knitting patterns, search for corrections.
Study in Frustration.......2007-08-25
This pattern book has very nice looking vests but,
unfortunately, the instructions have too many errors.
I tried to knit the Bookworm vest and it came out huge
even though the gauge measured correctly.
Wish I had not purchased the book.
Knitting.......2007-01-10
Enjoying the book, it provides me with an outlook on vests from other countries. Recommend this book to all who are interested in knitting styles .
A History of old garments.......2006-07-17
The book is interesting to read if you are interested in cultural history. The patterns are variated, you can knit some of the vests exactly as the pattern tells you, others are inspirational to your own fantasy. You can make your own variant of the garment.

The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques
ASIN: 0696209527 |
Amazon.com
Better Homes and Gardens has issued what may be the perfect book on perennials. Perennials for Today's Gardens contains all the details a gardener could need or want: gorgeous, full-page color photos of each of the 100 perennials covered; written descriptions of each plant; a history of the name and the plant's propagation; planting guidelines (including the correct soil conditions, drought tolerance, sun and shade requirements, spacing and placement tips, friendly companion plantings, and hardiness according to zones); and information on related species.
In addition, we get sections on design (focusing on color, form, texture, fragrance, luminescence, and seasonality), design partners (shrubs and trees, structure, water, ornaments), garden ecology (pattern, process, light, soil, and moisture), and "putting it all together" (creating space, combinations, layering). The perennials themselves are grouped into sections on shade, partial shade, and sun, so you immediately know where to look for the perfect plant for that shady backyard spot or the full sun of the front yard. Perennials will suit the gardener ready to create stunning, easy-care garden plots that will bring joy year after year. --Stefanie Durbin
Customer Reviews:
returned the book.......2002-05-29
I ordered this book to learn more about the flowers I have planted or would like to have in my flower garden. Well, it wasn't what I was looking for. Most of the flowers are ones I have never even heard of or are the kind that would be expensive. It does have beautiful pictures tho. I returned the book.
Great photos, good information, unusual plants.......2001-06-15
I have to confess, when I saw "Better Homes and Gardens" on the cover I wasn't expecting much--at most, a rehashing of all the typical, common garden perennials. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a book full of excellent photos and descriptions of many new, uncommon, and unusual garden plants. This book is a great complement to all the other gardening books already out there, and I highly recommend it. Let's hope BH&G continues to put out such high-quality gardening books.
Perennials for Today's Garadens.......2000-08-24
You're in for a surprise and a real treat when you get past the pretty but uninformative cover and title of this very exciting book. A more descriptive title would have been Uncommon Perennials for The Adventurous Gardener.
The book is filled with page after page of underused and brand new plants. This feast is served up with the extraordinary plant knowledge and innovative design ideas that we've come to expect from plantsman and designer C.Colston Burrell.
There is something here for every gardener but I think especially for those intrepid souls eager to expand their plant and design repertoire (and who isn't). Many of these plants will be new to the reader - thank goodness! The plant names alone - Anemonopsis, Tricyrtis 'Kohaku', Carex 'Island Brocade', Phygelius 'African Queen' -- are enough to drive the gardener straight to the appropriate mailorder catalogue, a list of which is thoughtfully provided in the index.
Don't be put off by the new and unusual in Perennials for Today's Gardens. Burrell thoroughly discusses the ferns, hellebores, epimediums, salvias, hibiscus, iris and geraniums that populate our gardens. His clear presentation on using new plants alongside our mainstays inspires us to actually try those trilliums, primulas and woodland peonies that have been so tempting but intimidating.
The book's sections on design and garden ecology are extremely well written and useful. In fact this is a great course on garden design. The plant sections of the book are divided into shade, part shade and sun gardens, and include underused native plants and some of the newest plants making their way into Western gardens from China and other less explored parts of the world. The photographs are excellent - obviously chosen to show how a plant will really work in the garden.
I can't praise this book enough. Enjoy!
Better Homes & Gardens Perennials for Today's Gardens.......2000-04-08
I loved this book, the photographs were simply gorgeous (starting with the cover). There was excellent and practical advice on how to design a garden for the beginner as well as advanced gardener. The best part of the book was the author's plant suggestions and usage in the garden.I would highly recommend this awesome book and I can't wait to try his suggestions in my garden.

Book Description
Over the past decade, social changes have redefined the boundaries of "normal family life," calling for a reexamination of assumptions, both explicit and implicit, embedded in our cultural and clinical beliefs. Offering groundbreaking perspectives from leading clinical educators and researchers, this second edition of a classic work addresses the vast diversity of family forms, life challenges, and value systems in our rapidly changing society. The first edition of NORMAL FAMILY PROCESSES is recognized as a milestone in the clinical literature. Completely updated and expanded, this volume continues its pioneering work, covering the current concepts of family functioning and frameworks for assessment and treatment.
The book opens with a comprehensive overview of recent conceptual advances regarding normal family functioning. Bridging clinical and social science perspectives, Dr. Walsh places the consideration of normality into a sociohistorical perspective, reminding us that families in our society have always been diverse, and that our idealized model of the "normal family" may have blinded us to the potential for healthy functioning in a variety of family arrangements. Several leading family systems investigators then present state-of-the-art research models that delineate attributes of well-functioning families, discuss the efficacy of numerous clinical assessment instruments, and propose questions and suggestions for guiding intervention and future research.
Addressing the diversity of contemporary family functioning patterns, the following two parts focus on family structure, sociocultural context, and developmental context. Chapters cover the challenges faced by dual-earner, single-parent, and gay and lesbian families, as well as normative processes in divorced, remarried, and adoptive families. and lesbian couples and their families. A broad, cross-cultural perspective on family normality is presented, with consideration given to ethnic differences, the impact of social class and race, and changing gender norms. Normal challenges in the family life cycle are explored, as are the stresses of serious illness on family functioning. The book concludes with an examination of the impact of social policy for families and recommendations for supporting healthy family functioning.
Bringing an important work completely up to date, the second edition of NORMAL FAMILY PROCESSES is an excellent basic text for the education and clinical training of a wide range of mental health professionals and social scientists concerned with healthy family functioning. An invaluable sourcebook for clinicians and researchers alike, it provides a means to compare and utilize leading assessment models; to develop new concepts, assessment tools, and intervention strategies; and to inform all family research, policy, and practice.
